TIRAGE A 1.600 EXEMPLAIRES.

        Peer Gynt

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1936. A Dramatic Poem. Quarto (265 x 189 mm). Specially bound for the publisher in green full morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt lettered and panelled spine, single-line gilt panel on sides with gilt corner ornaments from designs by Rackham, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, two-line gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers (the original pictorial endpapers bound in after binder's blanks). Coloured frontispiece and 11 mounted colour plates, black and white drawings in the text, by Rackham. An excellent copy. Deluxe edition, number 1 of 460 copies signed by the artist. This is one of ten "special copies" reserved by the publisher from the total edition, presented in a specially commissioned luxury binding and including a delightful full-page original pen-and-ink and watercolour drawing by Rackham (signed "Arthur Rackham 36"), showing Peer Gynt in a mountain landscape with crouching figures and anthropomorphic trees. Describing his artistic method for these "specials", Rackham pointed out that "my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations". Riall comments that "From The King of the Golden River [1932], Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition" (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi).

1936. Large 4to. Altogether (¾+1 =) 1¾ pp. on 2 ff. With one addendum (s. b.). To Belgian author, filmmaker and documentarist Henri Storck, telling him about his imminent making of 'La Grande illusion' and expressing his wish to come and visit him in Brussels as well as to work with his Club du Cinéma (28. X. 1936). [...]" (20. I. 1937). - One letter with printed letterhead, the other with punched holes (not touching text). Accompanied by an ALS from Belgian screenwriter Charles Spaak to Renoir in which Spaak accuses the addressee of having cheated him out of the rights of "La Grande illusion", for which Spaak had been a coauthor: "Vieux traitre ! [...] [...]". - A certain Rolmer had financed "La Grande illusion". Jean Devalde (1888-1982) was a Belgian actor. - Mounted on paper.

1936. 8vo. Altogether (4+1=) 5 pp. on double leaves. To the critic Alexander Berrsche. A long and comprehensive letter in which Strauss explains in detail what Berrsche had criticized in his review of an Academy Concert that Strauss had conducted: "You heard quite correctly that it was less 'vivacious', less 'dashing' than usual [...] the brass section remained 'unaffected' and 'subdued'. Beethoven's Scherzo was played (following Bulow's rule) in moderate tempo for the first time, and only the second repetition was played in full Vivace, the finale was played a third slower than is common among the world's most famous conductors and even Richard Wagner himself postulated (erroneously, in my opinion) [...]". - Includes a typed letter to Berrsche by the publisher, and a letter from Strauss to a Munich publishing house.

Black cloth spine and paper covered boards, upper cover tinted black and decorated in red with Walton & Cotton cipher and fish. Spine defective, front board detached. some minor smudging, generally very good. Ball, Robert. Pencil on paper: 120 drawings (many full page) including map endpapers (somewhat faded), three title page mock-ups, printed title page dated 1935, proof printing of Ball's half-title design, two title page designs dated 1936, numerous vignettes and ornaments, several drawings repeated on tissue (tipped in). 1 vols. 4to. Ball's Illustrations for 'The Compleat Angler' 1935-36. Outstanding maquette of original drawings by Robert Ball (1890-1975) for the Heritage Press edition of the Compleat Angler by Walton & Cotton. As the first title page designs indicate, the edition was planned for 1935, and a printed title page dated 1935 has been tipped in, but the book did not appear until 1936 (Coigney 324). Robert Ball illustrated numerous sporting books during the 1930s, including several for the Derrydale Press: Pteryplegia (1931), John Peel (1932), and The Warwick Woodlands (1934), each in a historical style sympathetic to the individiual work. His designs for The Compleat Angler honor the fashion of the mid-seventeenth century and yet the details are distinctively Ball's own. His drawings of natural scenes, fish, birds, and animals are finely detailed and lively. The illustrations inlcude vignettes and page layouts as well as more elaborate full page drawings. The inside back cover of the notebook bears Ball's address: Robert Ball, 280 West 4th St., Provincetown, Mass. With: a copy of the 1938 Heritage Club reprint (Coigney 332), inscribed by the artist on the flyleaf, "with best wishes of RB [cipher] for Carl 16 May 1639". The recipient was Carl Burger, illustrator of children's books, including Old Yeller and The Incredible Journey".

THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH. Illustrated by Frank A. Utpatel.

Everett, Pennsylvania: Visionary Publishing Co., 1936. First Edition, First Printing. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth titled in silver. Of two known bindings, this copy has the title in upper and lower case letters. 158 pp., four illustrations by Frank Utpatel. 400 copies were printed. Around 200 copies were bound, the remaining sheets destroyed or abandoned. A dust wrapper was issued as an afterthought, and exists in three states; due to a leaky garage, fewer than 100 had dust wrappers. An errata sheet was made up some time after initial publication and exists in some copies. The errata leaf and printed dust jacket accompany this copy. The dust jacket is Currey variant 3 (no priority established), with lettering in silver and no illustration on front panel, the lettering on the spine and front panel printed horizontally in upper and lower case letters. A virtually fine copy in dust jacket, with very little spine creasing (the book was poorly bound and copies are most commonly found with wretched spines). Errata slip laid in. Enclosed in a fine folding solander case, black leather spine titled in gilt and gray cloth sides, commissioned especially for this copy from master bookbinder Gray Parrot. Lovecraft's first published book, preceded by THE SHUNNED HOUSE (1928) that was printed but not bound, and circulated only within a tiny circle of Lovecraft's friends. The book was printed in April, 1936, the edition not bound until November, Lovecraft received his copies late in the year and sent out some inscribed copies as Christmas presents He was hospitalized soon after that and died on March 15, 1937.

[1936]., London - Octavo, pp. [1-10] 11-251 [252-256: blank] [note: first and last two leaves are blanks used as front and rear paste-downs and endpapers, original red boards, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. Collects fifteen stories by Dion Fortune, Jessie Douglas Kerruish and others, several first published in WEIRD TALES. This volume is notable for the first professional publication of David H. Keller's famous psychological horror tale "The Dead Woman," and the first appearance of Dermot Chesson Spence's "Little Red Shoes," which subsequently gave its name to Spence's rare and much-sought collection of nasty ghost stories. Also includes Oswell Blakeston's "The Crack," a nightmarish piece strangely reminiscent of Lovecraft's "Nyarlathotep." The eleventh and last volume in the important "Not at Night" anthology series. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-195. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1594. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 4-302. Bleiler (1978), p. 193. Reginald 14084. Mild foxing to first and last two leaves and to edges of text block, a very good copy in a very good pictorial 2/- dust jacket (designed by C. Loslio) with wear at edges, some general dust soiling, and 6p reduced price sticker affixed to the spine panel. A pretty decent copy of a cheaply made book. All of the "Not at Night" titles have become uncommon, especially in jacket. (#153515) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Toronto. Champlain Society. 1922-1936. - 8vo.23.5cm, in 7 volumes, containing 82 maps and plates, many folding,(including separate portfolio of plates and maps), limited and numberededition, this being 72, in the original crested red cloth, t.e.g., formerowner's bookplate in volumes one & seven, spines slightly faded as usual(titles clear), else a fine set. (cgc) With the text in French andEnglish. T.P.L. 30. Waterston p203. Champlain's vigorous descriptions ofQuebec, Tadoussac, the St. Lawrence and Acadian regions were not fullyavailable in English translation until 1936. He presented his commentson trade, exploration and climate in a series of official reports between1604 and 1632. Samuel de Champlain, explorer and colonizer, was born atBrouage, France, about 1567. Visiting America in 1601, he was appointedroyal geographer on his return to France; and in 1603 he made his firstvisit to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1604 he accompanied Monts'expedition to Acadia, and he spent the next three years exploring andmapping the coasts of Acadia and northern New England. In 1608 hecommanded the expedition which founded the post of Quebec and the restof his life was mainly devoted to making this settlement a success. In1612 he was appointed commandant in New France; and in 1627 he becameGovernor of the Colony under the Company of One Hundred Associates. Hiswork as an explorer and geographer, was, however, no less noteworthy thanhis work as a colonizer. In 1613 he visited the upper Ottawa Valley, andin 1615-16 he reached Georgian Bay, by way of the Ottawa River and LakeNipissing; spent a winter among the Huron Indians; followed the Trentvalley south to Lake Ontario; and penetrated into the Iroquois countryin Northern New York. Here Champlain had an encounter with the Iroquoiswhich proved later disastrous for the French colonists; but this resulthe could hardly have foreseen. Champlain died at Quebec on December 25,1635 but with the satisfaction of seeing the colony of New France firmlyestablished. His writings are classics of early North American travel.Wallace DCB.
