A Map and History of Peiping; formerly known as Peking... MAP WITH EXPLANATORY BOOKLET, SLIPCASE, & BUSINESS CARD FOR PEIYAN PRESS.

Tientsin-Peiping.: Peiyang Press.. 1936. Tenth Printing 1948.. Color lithograph pictorial / pictographic map, 31 3/4 x 28 inches (81 x 71 cm) on sheet 34 1/4 x 29 1/2 inches. Originally folded with a 3 inch split along upper horizontal fold, now archivally mounted on linen, very good condition. COMPLETE WITH paper slipcase with decorative cover title (light wear) 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, booklet (very good condition) 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, and one-fold paper business card for the Peiyang Press. This highly decorative and sought-after map by Frank Dorn was published in several editions, all with a copyright date of 1936 on the map. The slipcase for this copy identifies it as the Tenth Printing - May 1948. The decorative border includes a history of the city to 1936, and at lower left and right a wedding and a funeral procession. The map is full of pictographs of the city, its buildings and its people, with a light-hearted and fond touch. Of particular interest is the pictorial business card of the Press, advertising in the centrefold the Frank Dorn map and "Artistic Photos of Peiping" by W.F. Yien. Copies of the first and third editions (with dating of 1936) are listed at various WorldCat libraries, but we have been unable to find a record of the 1948 edition. A stunning map, well documented with its accompanying pieces, presented here archivally mounted on linen and ready to be displayed. .

        Seven Symbols of Life.

London: The Buddhist Lodge,, 1936. Being an essay on eternal verities as expressed in the images of the lotus, of water, wind, fire, man, woman and child. Octavo. Original wrappers sewn at the fold, titles to front in black. Toning to wrappers around the edges, some light rubbing and creasing at the corners, a few very minor marks, but sound and internally clean, an excellent copy. First edition, sole printing, presentation copy inscribed in the year of publication by Watts on the title page, "To Francis Crowdy, from Alan W. Watts, 26.11.36". The recipient may have been writer and actor Francis Crowdy (1916-95), known for his screenwriting work for films The Mark of Cain (1947) and Hungry Hill (1947). A truly rare early book from this great figure in the dissemination and popularisation of Eastern philosophy throughout the West: OCLC records only three copies in libraries worldwide: British Library, National Library of Scotland, and one in the Netherlands; COPAC adds only Oxford - no copies are recorded at auction. To have one inscribed, presenting an exceptionally early Watts signature, is rare and desirable indeed.

        through the camera's lens.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

'Snapshots home and abroad': A European and British Photograph Album and two Travelogues 1936-49

Three volumes, various sizes. A photograph album, containing 284 photographs and photographic cards and two journals. The first journal has 65 typed pages, with some photographs and cuttings; 'Paris by Elisabeth E. Beacham, August 1938', 93 typed pages with some cuttings pasted to pages showing scenes of Germany, France, Switzerland and the UK from 1936 to 1949. The second journal, 'Two innocents at large in Switzerland, 1937, Mary Jennings and Elsie Beacham', 'THIS RECORD IS WRITTEN BY Elsie Beacham', 65 typed pp. with some photographs and cuttings. The two journals and photograph album recount the experiences of Elizabeth Beacham, and her travelling companion, Mary Jennings, travelling through European countries in the late 1930s. Although referencing European politics of the time, the journals, written by Elizabeth Beacham, have a wry, ironic and comedic element to them, in which Miss Beacham teases her friend and reports upon the sights, sounds and conversations with other people the two have encountered during their travels. "At the end of February, 1938 Mary said "what about going to Paris fot our holidays?" I said I had no objection, but what about Hitler? "O him!" She dismissed the Furher with a frown, but nevertheless it was with some trepidation a short time later that we watched him march into Austria..."

Snow On Cholera, Being a Reprint of Two Papers

New York: [Printed by D.B. Updike, The Merrymount Press, for] The Commonwealth Fund, 1936. First Edition. Near Fine. xlviii, [2], vii, [1], 191 pp. With frontispiece of the author, plus 2 large folding maps (the 2nd one in color). Original publisher's brown cloth (without dust-jacket). First edition thus, not to be confused with the facsimile reprint of 1949. This is D.B. Updike's reprint of two of the seminal documents of epidemiology, namely John Snow's "On the Mode of Communication of Cholera" (2nd ed. 1855) and his oration delivered at the 80th Anniversary of the Medical Society of London, "On Continuous Molecular Changes, More Particularly in Their Relation to Epidemic Diseases" (1853). The importance of Snow's work is described at length by the Center of Disease Control, Atlanta: "In the mid-1800s, an anesthesiologist named John Snow was conducting a series of investigations in London that warrant his being considered the 'father of field epidemiology.' Twenty years before the development of the microscope, Snow conducted studies of cholera outbreaks both to discover the cause of disease and to prevent its recurrence. [...] His work illustrates the classic sequence from descriptive epidemiology to hypothesis generation to hypothesis testing (analytic epidemiology) to application. Snow conducted one of his now famous studies in 1854 when an epidemic of cholera erupted in the Golden Square of London. He began his investigation by determining where in this area persons with cholera lived and worked. Because Snow believed that water was a source of infection for cholera, he marked the location of water pumps on his spot map, then looked for a relationship between the distribution of households with cases of cholera and the location of pumps. [This] established the sequence of steps used by current-day epidemiologists to investigate outbreaks of disease. Based on a characterization of the cases and population at risk by time, place, and person, Snow developed a testable hypothesis. He then tested his hypothesis with a more rigorously designed study, ensuring that the groups to be compared were comparable. [...] Thus, with no knowledge of the existence of microorganisms, Snow demonstrated through epidemiologic studies that water could serve as a vehicle for transmitting cholera and that epidemiologic information could be used to direct prompt and appropriate public health action." The maps: The first documents the deaths from cholera in Broad Street, Golden Square and environs from August 19 to September 30, 1854. "A black mark or bar for each death is places in the situation of the house in which the fatal attack took place. The situation of the Broad Street Pump is also indicated, as well as that of all the surrounding Pumps to which the public had access." The second map (in color) depicts boundaries of the Registrar-General's districts south of the Thames and the respective water supplies. Unusual for books of a medical nature is the inclusion of "A Note on the Typography of this Book" in which the printer, D.B. Updike, explains his choice of fonts; the typographical design of the first and second Papers; and even binding itself. With a biography of Snow by B.W. Richardson, and an introduction by Wade Hampton Frost. In lovely condition. Literature: see especially Bruce S. Schoenberg, R.J. Mann, and L.T. Kurland, "Snow on the Water of London" in: Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Sept. 1974 (49): 680-684 of which an offprint is included with the present volume.

Memoirs of the Hawaiin Revolution (3 Volume Set in Original slipcase)

Advertiser Publishing Co., Ltd, Honolulu 1936 - Octavo. Limited to 600 sets published for subscribers. A set of the memoirs of Sanford B. Dole and Lorrin A. Thurston published by the Advertising Publishing Company. This set is numbered 187 with the limitation slip mounted on the lining papers of each volume. Originally written for joint serial publication with Lorrin A. Thurston's memoirs in the Honolulu Advertiser. Thurston's chapter begins with Jack London's arrival on his yacht Snark in 1907. Thurston provides interesting details about London's fixed writing routine, his despising of what today would be called "political correctness" on the racial issues inherent in Hawaii, followed by Thurston's defense. The set is comprised of: Vol. I, Writings of Lorrin A. Thurston, 166p. index; Vol. II. Lorrina A. Thurston, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 664p.; Vol. III Sanford Dole, Memoirs of the Hawaiian Revolution, 188p. index. From the controversy of Queen Lili'uokalani's authorship of Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen to the issue on the annexation of Hawaii (and even statehood [as Mahan advocated as an early proponent of geopolitical issues], this is an essential set for understanding the History of Hawaii from President Harrison to the period just before the Second World War. Although the three volumes has nearly 1,000 pages of text, the margins are wide and the print is large so that it is eminently readable. Bound in red patterned cloth letrtered in gilt, within blind stamped frame. A very good set with rubbing to joints and gilt fading. Housed in original three decker slipcase.         Photograph album of a participant. [Berlin, 1936].

1936. 8vo. Oblong album, leather over cream paper boards, string-tied, silver title and Olympic design to front, twine stitching to perimeter. Contains 56 black and white photographs measuring 310 x 240 mm, mounted with clear photo corners, each leaf separated with webbed tissue guard. Two additional photographs loosely placed within. Some loss to leather spine, verso only, otherwise in very good condition, a pleasing album with crisp images. These images, captured firsthand by a participating athlete in the Olympic games, center around the Berlin Olympic Stadium, where the athletic and track events took place, revealing the photographer's sport. We also find images of runners on a practice course, a high jumper, an equestrian event, spectators, security officials, and guards, some of the latter sporting binoculars for surveillance, others armed with long rifles. Olympic monuments include the Marathon Gate pillars from which was hung the iconic five ring symbol, the enormous receptacle for the Olympic Flame, and one of the sculptures of athletes which today are the subject of discord by some. City streets are saturated with political propaganda flags, whilst symbolic Olympic flags make but a mere discreet dispersing appearance among them. Two views show an airship blimp with the Germany's new national symbol hovering overhead, while a few inner city views show athletes running with the torch ceremoniously for the civilians. Elements of domination, superiority and mastery are captured two-fold in this unusual album of images, first and foremost in the display of a grand competition event of athletic champions from around the world, and secondly, in the less than subtle propaganda that would inevitably pierce the otherwise peaceful images of global collaboration and common ground. Rare to find an album by a professional athlete yet an amateur photographer of these historic Olympic Games.
