John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1936 - 1936 Wisden Original Hardback

1936. Hi, This lot is a 1936 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, excellent for the year. It also had the added bonus of being a presentation copy, signed by WH Brookes (Editor) to future editor Norman Preston which makes the book very unique. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. The gilt to the front and spine is ever so slightly fading as per the year and the boards are dulled, this book however is a lot better than an average 1936. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The hinges are strong. Old address sticker to the first page and removable post-it-note stating the endorsement. The previous owner had a bat bookmark inserted loosly froma paperback. Internally very good without restoration with an excellent photoplate.

[Manila Galleon, Typescript]. "That Year's Galleon" (early title)

S.l. (probably Santa Barbara, CA): , not after 1936. S.l. (probably Santa Barbara, CA), not after 1936. 23 chapters + Epilogue, each individually paginated. Typewritten on "Superior Manifold - Esleeck Mfg Co" paper (8 1/2 x 11") This appears to be the only significant Cameron Rogers manuscript still in private ownership (the University of Oregon has five of them, for which see below). It is an early typescript of the novel "Manila Galleon," composed while the author's working title was "That Year's Galleon." The novel, a work of historical fiction, explores the Manila-Acapulco gallion trade, and is set in the Philippines in 1621. Among the characters are: Don Alonzo Fajardo y Tenza, the Governor; his disturbingly beautiful wife Dona Catalina Maria Sembrano; Don Juan de la Mesa y Suero, the captain of the Spanish galleon La Nuestra Senora de la Vida which sails from Manila to Acapulco. The work was published in 1936 by D. Appleton-Century Company, New York (consisting of 232 pages). William Rose Benet, in his review of the novel, mentions that "the tragic romance of the book, counterpointed by one of comic tragedy, unfolds speedily. [...] Effects both moving and beautiful (not to say also shrewd and comic) are achieved with laudable economy of means. [...] The work of an expert writer and contains no shoddy" (SOURCE: The Saturday Review, 8 Aug. 1936, p. 6). The paper stock of the present typescript was "Superior Manifold," manufactured in the 1920s by Esleeck Mfg. Co. of Turners Falls, Mass. "Superior Manifold" is mentioned in advertisements in the 1921 "Lockwood's Directory of the Paper and Stationary Trade," the 1922 "American Stationer" (vol. 90), the 1922 "American Printer and Lithographer" (vol. 74), and 1924 and 1925 issues of "The Rotarian." Further reference to Esleeck's "Superior Manifold" have not been forthcoming. Rogers (1900-1971) contributed to three Hollywood films in the 1930's and 1940's: "Cardinal Richelieu" (1935), "White Banners" (1938), and "Belle Starr" (1941). He was the son of noted poet and magazine editor Robert Cameron Rogers. His first wife was the writer Frances Colby, daughter of Bainbridge Colby (a former Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson) and the novelist Natalie Sedgwick Colby. His second wife, screenwriter, Elisabeth Cobb, was the daughter of humorist, Irvin S. Cobb. Rogers lived in Santa Barbara, CA for most of his life (the present MS was given by the author to one of his Santa Barbara friends -- see below). His other works include "The Magnificent Idler," a fictional account of Walt Whitman (1926), "Colonel Bob Ingersoll" (1927), "Gallant Ladies" (1928), "The Legend of Calvin Coolidge" (1928), "Cyrano" (1929), "Oh Splendid Appetite!" (1932), "Flight Surgeon" (1940), "Trodden Glory: The Story of the California Poppy" (1949) and many articles, essays and reviews. Provenance: by gift to Lydia Bodrero (1902-2009) of Santa Barbara, CA (she was the wife of Ranieri Bourbon del Monte, 5th Prince of San Faustino) -- by descent to her Montino Bourbon del Monte, 6th Prince of San Faustino, Marchese del Monte Santa Maria (b. 1942) of Santa Barbara. COMMENT: Surviving manuscripts at the University of Oregon: "The Hours I Spent," "A Judge in Early Arcady," "A Melody in Minor," "A Prince of Peru," and "Steadfast in his Heart."

Ma Gouvernante, my nurse, mein Kindermädchen. Originalsilbergelatine-Abzug, s/w, rückseitig von Meret Oppenheim handschriftlich in Bleistift betitelt. Datiert und signiert. Mit dem Atelierstempel des Fotografen Albert Winkler.

      - 16x24,2 cm. Vergl. Curiger A22. "Ma gouvernante - My Nurse - Mein Kindermädchen is the artist's own title, and it is an essential element of the work. Oppenheim said that the white shoes reminded her of a nanny: "I was a small child, four or five, we had a young nanny. She dressed in white. Maybe she was in love and maybe she radiated a sensual atmosphere that I unconsciously registered, and maybe this was the reason that white-attired 'Elseli' left such a lasting impression on me." The tri-lingual title is evocative of the multilingual bourgeois circles of the early 20th century." - Wurde in 'et 3' als 21. Blatt abgedruckt.

100% money;: Designed to keep checking banks 100% liquid; to prevent inflation and deflation; largely to cure or prevent depressions; and to wipe out much of the national debt

Adelphi Co. Hardcover. B00085M6WC 1936 second 'revised' edition, Adelphi Company (NY), 5 5/8 x 8 inches tall blue cloth hardbound, no dust jacket, faded gilt lettering to spine, top page edges yellow, xxiv, 257 pp. Externally, not a handsome copy. Covers are moderately soiled, rubbed and edgeworn, with fraying at the spine caps and a half-inch edge tear to the top of the backstrip. Both front and rear boards are heavily water-stained to the fore edges, and both boards are very slightly bowed. Nicely inscribed, dated (June 1937) and signed by the author on the blank front free-endpaper. Authenticity of signature guaranteed in perpetuity. One-inch stain to the fore edge of the half title, title and contents pages, and quarter-inch edge tears to the top edge of the last two (blank) leaves of the book. Otherwise, apart from mild age toning and scattered very slight foxing to a few pages, a clean and unmarked copy. Works signed by Fisher - especially works on economics - are uncommon. ~EE~ Irving Fisher (1867-1947) was an American economist, statistician, inventor and Progressive social campaigner. He was one of the earliest American neoclassical economists, though his later work on debt deflation has been embraced by the Post-Keynesian school. Joseph Schumpeter described him as 'the greatest economist the United States has ever produced,' an assessment later repeated by James Tobin and Milton Friedman. This is the second edition of this important Fisher work - the first having been published the previous year - here extensively revised following the passing of the Omnibus Banking Act of 1935. In it, Fisher proposes the elimination of economic fluctuations by requiring that demand deposits be backed by a corresponding amount of cash, an idea which had its roots in the work of Leon Walras, Ludwig von Mises, and the Chicago School. Fisher made important contributions to utility theory and general equilibrium. He was also a pioneer in the rigorous study of intertemporal choice in markets, which led him to develop a theory of capital and interest rates. His research on the quantity theory of money inaugurated the school of macroeconomic thought known as 'monetarism.' Fisher was also a pioneer of econometrics, including the development of index numbers. Some concepts named after him include the Fisher equation, the Fisher hypothesis, the international Fisher effect, the Fisher separation theorem and Fisher market. Fisher's reputation has enjoyed a recent resurgence in neoclassical economics, particularly after his work was rediscovered in the late 1950s, and more widely due to an increased interest in debt deflation after the late-2000s recession. .         Autograph Signatures from 1936 Porgy & Bess Production

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Bold autograph signature in pencil "George Gershwin" on an album sheet, dated 1936 at the left in another hand, together with a second signature from the same album and apparently same occasion, being that of Anne Brown (signed "Anne Brown / 'Bess' / 'Porgy and Bess'"), creator of the role of Bess.  <br style="">Porgy and Bess was first performed at the Colonial Theater in Boston on September 30th 1935. It opened in New York at the Alvin Theater on October 10th of that same year, starring Anne Brown as Bess and Todd Duncan as Porgy. The work includes a number of Gershwin's best-known and loved tunes, including Summertime and I Got Plenty o' Nuttin, both of which were among the pieces performed here.  After the Broadway run, a tour started on January 27, 1936, in Philadelphia and traveled to Pittsburgh and Chicago before ending in Washington, D.C., on March 21, 1936. During the Washington run, the castâ??as led by Todd Duncanâ??protested segregation at the National Theatre. Eventually management gave in to the demands, resulting in the first integrated audience for a performance of any show at that venue. Given the dating of the Gershwin signature, we understand that these were both obtained during that historic run of the performance.

        Portrait of My Wife

A figurative painting of Rexroth's second wife, Marie (Kass) Rexroth. Rexroth's notes indicate the date and title of the painting, and include: "hair - orange, dress - green." Reminiscent of Matisse, the piece is not entirely representational, as the portrait shows distortions in the disposition of Marie's body (the angles of her legs and arms, the relation of Marie to the chair, and the chair to the room), and includes an abstract painting in the upper left corner, which carries a typical motif of Rexroth's work, a magnet turned on its side with two circles set in opposition Wax, silica, and pure decorator colors on wooden board, 15 5/8" wide x 17 3/4" high, ca. 1936, with notes on the back in white chalk: "Marie Rexroth", and the date "1935" or "1936", framed by Rexroth. Cracks in the paint in a few places, few flecks out of the red paint of the hair, a couple of tiny chips in the black of the dress, otherwise in fine condition.

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1936. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, two line border to head and foot of covers in blind. Cloth lightly soiled, extremities a little worn, two tiny dampstains to fore edge of text block, closed tears and slight creasing to top corners of pp. 153?6. A very good copy with bright contents. First edition, first impression. "The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade-cycle ? in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economics to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate" (PMM). His conclusion, namely that "the regulation of the trade-cycle - that is to say the control of booms and slumps, the level of employment, the wage-scale and the flow of investment - must be the responsibility of governments", permanently altered the terms of economic debate and considerations of the role of government in managing the economy (or not).

London: Faber and Faber Ltd, (1936) First edition of Barnes'; celebrated roman à clef set in Paris in the 1920s. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To John Hayward, with love, Djuna Barnes." Laid into this copy is a brief autographed card signed by Barnes to Hayward, reading "A Very Merry Christmas & a Good New Year - Would write Tom but he';s away, Always, Djuna." John Hayward, (1905-1965) literary editor and critic, bibliophile and bibliographer, the editor of The Book Collector, and cataloguer of The Rothschild Library, Lord Rothschild';s great collection of Eighteenth Century English Literature, was for many years T. S. Eliot';s closest friend, the poet';s archivist, editor, and literary executor. Hayward and Eliot shared a flat at Carlyle Mansions in Chelsea for eleven years from 1946 until 1957, and it is to "Tom" Eliot that Barnes refers in her note. In 1957, Eliot suddenly married Esmé Valerie Fletcher, his young secretary, and abruptly left Hayward, his long-time companion. The news that Eliot was leaving came as a "stunning surprise" to Hayward. In a letter to Helen Gardner, Hayward wrote: "I knew nothing and suspected nothing until he handed me a letter to read as he was leaving - literally leaving - the flat, to spend the night with his lawyer before the 6:15 am 25 guineas ceremony." On the day of Eliot';s wedding, Hayward told his sister Diana, "You will never guess what has happened! Mr Eliot has eloped with his secretary." Eliot and Hayward remained estranged for many years afterwards. Referring to his second marriage, Eliot told Djuna Barnes "I';m the luckiest, the very luckiest man on earth." - John Smart, Tarantula';s Web: John Hayward, T. S. Eliot and Their Circle (London: Michael Russell, 2013), pp. 264-272. A classic of lesbian literature, Nightwood was rejected by American publishers, and at the instigation of T. S. Eliot, a director of the firm, was first published in England by Faber and Faber. Harcourt, Brace published the first American edition, with an introduction by Eliot, in 1937. Both editions were slightly bowdlerized, and the original text was not published until Dalkey Archive Press brought out an unexpurgated edition in 1995. William Burroughs called Nightwood "one of the great books of the twentieth century." Although undated, Barnes';s presentation inscription and certainly her inserted note presumably date from the period during which Hayward and Eliot lived together in Chelsea 8vo, original purple cloth, dust jacket. A few small chips at lower fore-corner of the dust jacket, a tiny bit of edge-wear elsewhere, otherwise a fine copy of a rare book, an exceptional association copy, and the only inscribed copy we have handled.

        Collected Poems of James Joyce

N.Y.: Black Sun Press, 1936 First edition, deluxe issue, one of 50 copies printed on Japan vellum and signed by Joyce. Slocum & Cahoon A44. Collected Poems includes poems previously published in Chamber Music and Pomes Penyeach, but its primary distinction is in being the first appearance of Joyce's finest and most moving poem, "Ecce Puer", which Joyce wrote on February 15, 1932, the day his grandson, Stephen James Joyce, was born. In "Ecce Puer", however, Joyce's joy at his grandson's birth is subdued by grief over the recent death of his father, John Joyce, who had died on December 29, 1931, and the poem ends: "A child is sleeping; / An old man gone. / O, father forsaken, / Forgive your son!" As Joyce wrote to T. S. Eliot, "He had an intense love for me and it adds anew to my grief and remorse that I did not go to Dublin to see him for so many years." Joyce had not seen his father in eleven years, and confided to Harriet Weaver that "It is not his death that crushed me so much as self-accusation." - Richard Ellmann, James Joyce (N. Y.: Oxford University Press, 1959), pp. 656-659 Small 8vo, frontispiece portrait by Augustus John, original decorated parchment boards, t.e.g., glassine dust jacket, publisher's gold foil slipcase. Very slight wear to glassine dust jacket and slipcase, otherwise a very fine copy, preserved in a half-morocco slipcase.

Two Signed Photographs in La Créole

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Pair of vintage glossy 3.5 x 5.5 postcard photos of Baker in 'La Creole,' each signed in fountain pen, "Josephine Baker, 1936." Both are individually mounted and matted to overall sizes of 14 x 17. In overall fine condition. <br style=""><br><br><br />"Baker's most significant break with the old music-hall genre occurred with her 1934 appearance as the lead in a revival of Offenbach's operetta La Créole. To play this role, she expanded her vocal range and modified her dance styles. Hammond and O'Connor call the production 'Josephine's greatest artistic triumph in Paris in the 1930s.' Baker played Dora, a Creole Jamaican who falls in love with a French sailor and travels to France in pursuit of him. This comic operatic role firmly placed her in the 'Boulevard tradition' of legitimate musical theater and moved her beyond the tableaux, erotic displays, and medleys of the music hall. Two recorded arias and a brief film clip of her acrobatic dance survive from the operetta, documenting her transformation as a comic-opera star."         Calls, Sounds and Merchandise of the Peking Street Peddlers

      - The Camel Bell. 1936. Peking. Hardcover. Quarto (large format - book's length is horizontal). Condition: Good. The beautifully decorated covers are made of red, blue, and green embroidered silk brocade, embraced on the spine by an orange silk cord. The covers do not show much evidence of use. The red paste-on title to cover rests atop a white paste-on paper underneath, which has the effect of producing a one-eighth inch white border to surround the plate. The endpapers, front and back, are of a mottled orange and white design. The sewn binding is secure, and all pages are firmly attached. There is, however, one small spot, between the front two endpapers, that is worn, and reveals a glimpse of the green-threaded binding underneath. Approximately half of the pages are accordion-fold. The pages do show use, primarily surface waviness, which is most prominent in the first third of the book, and there are spots of subtle creasing, likely partially incurred from the action of page-turning and simply the passage of time. This issue is slightly more pronounced on the title page and the succeeding five pages. There are 60 colored lithograph plates depicting some of the most distinctive Peking street peddlers of times past. Each lithograph is comprised of two sections, one showing the peddler plying his trade and the other bearing a close-up of his product, or the tool or instrument which he uses in his trade (i.e. in the blind fortune teller lithograph there is a close-up of the object he uses to tell fortunes). Some of the street peddlers are 'Sugar Figure Blower', 'Clay Utensil Peddler', 'Braid Peddler', 'Reed Horn Seller', 'Almond Tea Peddler', 'Trained Monkey Man', and 'Candied Fruit Peddler'. Women in this period of China's past seldom ventured form their homes, so buying the needed items from the street peddlers was the way they were able to supply their daily needs. There are also 16 tipped-in photographs, depicting various activities of Peking's citizens, including, for example, a puppet show, and a Peking barber. There is one framed and tipped-in paper floral pattern. One page depicts the Asian symbol for peace and is labeled 'Pa Kua', or eight diagrams. The author, born in 1894, came to Beijing in 1923 as an assistant military attache of the American Legation. While working for the Legation he also attended the College of Chinese Studies in Peking, where, as partial requirement for the degree of Master of Arts, he produced this remarkable book. Includes a short bibliography. The book is enclosed in its original cardboard slipcase, which is completely enclosed in paper decoration of the same colored pattern as that of the book. It also has the identical paste-on colored label as the book. The case has four tears at the bottom, along the ridges (two at each end) and two tears at the top, also at the ridges, at the right foredge. The decorative paper is worn in several places along the ridges at the top and bottom of the slipcase. The book still fits rather snugly inside. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Kingerlee - A Painter's Passage / 3. Kingerlee - Pneuma in Time - Namoc, Beijing '08/ 4. Kingerlee - New Works on Paper - The Kenny Gallery - Galway 2007 //. All signed by John Kingerlee.

      4. 280 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket. Collection of 4 signed volumes from John Kingerlee's library ! 3 of the 4 volumes are in original softcover/ Excellent condition with only minor external wear. A non-conformist at heart, John has turned his back on the traditional way of seeing and depicting landscape - as a series of parallel planes that are made to appear to recede from foreground to background by the artist's manipulation of linear and aerial perspective. Recognising that perspective itself is a mathematical construct, John takes a different approach that is as radical as it is original. He states that he wants his art to recreate the experience of being in and moving through the landscape. In the studio, using his own made-up pigments, he mimics the cycle of growth and decay by working with matter in a very direct and hands-on way. He applies colours, deep pools of it, red brick, reds, molten silver and zinc, platinum and titanium, sulphuric yellows and so much more to dozens of paintings in various states of becoming. He paints standing up, applying a new layer of paint (finished paintings will comprise fifty to one hundred or more layers of paint applied over a period of several years and when completed can take up to five months to dry out). His preferred tools are palette knives (one in each hand is the norm), and a decorator's brush which he holds vertically using a stippling technique. John Kingerlee (born 14 February 1936) is an Irish painter currently living in West Cork. He is a convert to Islam and has a second family in Fez, Morocco. John Kingerlee was born in Birmingham, England in 1936. His Mother was related to Hogan's from County Cork and he was educated in a school run by the Marist Fathers. After living for twenty years in Cornwall in the far southwest of Britain, he moved in 1982 to an isolated farmhouse on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, Ireland. Kingerlee has exhibited works in Ireland, England and The United States of America. (Wikipedia)
