        Prime Ministerial Document requesting the King's approval for the Appointment of Reverend Percy Scott to the Vicarage of Newport, Barnstaple.

      8vo., single sheet on Downing Street headed paper with Prime Ministerial logo and black mourning edges. Filing hole to top left corner otherwise in very good condition. This typed document is signed in ink by Stanley Baldwin and is endorsed in hand by King Edward VIII "Approved ERI". Signed Edward VIII documents are understandably rare. This document was acquired as part of a group of documents, in the mid-1970s, when the previous owner served on the staff of the Prime Minister. There was a pressing need for additional filing space at 10 Downing Street and, after a review of the document holdings, it was determined that several entire categories of papers could be destroyed as being no longer required. Members of the staff were invited to select as keepsakes if they wished a few (non-sensitive) items of historical interest. The subjects were generally clerical appointments or elevations to peerages. To the best of our knowledge, such keepsakes are the only surviving examples of documents of that nature from the period represented.

Very good. Authorized Russian translation from the German manuscript of Bertold Brecht’s play, known in English as “Round Heads and Pointed Heads,” written shortly before Hitler was elected Reichskanzler. It has been described as “Brecht’s first anti-Fascist play, one of the few which Brecht directed during his years of exile [ ] Round Heads and Pointed Heads would become a lightning rod in the literary politics of exile in Moscow” (Stephen Parker, Brecht: A Literary Life, 300–301). While initially conceived as an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Measure by Measure,” the rapid growth of National-Socialism prompted Brecht to depart from his original inspiration. The play became a clear parody of the Nazi’s demagogery and racial politics, set in the fictive country “Peru” whose inhabitants are divided into “round heads” (“Tschuchen”) and the “pointy heads” (“Tschichen”), leading to radicalization and violence. The play’s genealogy and reception are complex: scheduling conflicts prevented it from being premiered in Berlin in January 1932. After going into exile in 1933, Brecht rewrote the piece for a performance in Copenhagen, which was cancelled due to censorship concerns; a planned performance directed by Piscator in Moscow in 1935–1936 did not materialize, nor was Brecht able to secure contracts in France. In November 1936, the play premiered in a Danish-language performance; its first German production would come only in 1948. This Russian translation is the first full appearance of the play in print, in any version (an English translation followed in 1937, and the first German edition of the finalized text appeared in 1938).       Denver: Bradford-Robinson, 1936 - Oblong octavo. Original white paper spine, blue boards, front cover lettered in red. With the dust jacket. Jacket lightly toned and a little foxed, closed-tear across back panel, nicks and chips, a few slight abrasions to edges of binding. A remarkably good copy. Colour illustrations throughout, monochrome portraits of Elvy Kalep and Amelia Earhart. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy from the author, flamboyantly inscribed next to her portrait: "To Skippy with the kindest of wishes and many happy landings! Elvy Kalep [the signature a little faint, so re-inscribed:] from Elvy Kalep". Copies of this first edition are very uncommon, copies signed and in the original dust jacket are rare. The Estonian-born aviator Elvy Kalep (1899-1989) was a pioneer among women pilots, a good friend of Amelia Earhart (who supplied the Foreword) and a founder of the women's aviation group the Ninety-Nines.         Chess Problems Volume XVI (Numbers 2626-2811) Original Workbook

      Carrollton, GA: Self Written, 1936-1938. 186 pages with diagrams. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in quarter red cloth and black pebbled boards with Dobbs hand written title to front cover. Original manuscript.Gilbert Dobbs, through out his interest in chess composition, kept log-books of his composition. This is one of the many log-book he created. It has at least one problem for each page of the book. He numbered these as he composed them. The problems were had stamped with solutions below. As some became published the publication name and date is noted beside the problem. In addition to the hand written problems, there are some clipped newspaper chess columns laid in and a few loose ones as well. Some of his friends and other problemist names and addresses on pastedowns. These log-books were given to Frederick Gamage and friend and a protege of A C White as was Dobbs.Gilbert S. Dobbs ( Richmond, Kentucky , December 6 1867 - Carrollton, Georgia , February 14 1941 ) was a minister and chess composer. Son of a Baptist minister, Charles Edwin Willoughby Dobbs, he studied at Franklin College in Franklin Indiana and at Bethel College in Russellville , where he obtained an MA in 1888. Wanting to become himself a Baptist minister, he studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he was ordained pastor in 1890. He exercised his ministry in various US cities: Bloomington , Brownsville , Memphis , New Orleans and finally Carrolton in Georgia . He was a renouned poet. He wrote his master's thesis on using the poem as a thesis. He was also one of the world's top ten chess problemists and composed in two and three moves, generally with positions aesthetically attractive with hard keys. In collaboration with Edward Hanna wrote the book The Emery Memorial, an unpublished gem composed on New Year's day, 1936 (Carrollton, 1937), dedicated to problemist Canadian Reginald George Emery (1904-1936). Alain C. White and Richard E. Cheney dedicated the book A Chess Silhouette: One Hundred Chess Problems By the Reverend Gilbert Dobbs (Overbrook Press, Stamford, 1942).Condition:Fraying to edges, inner hinges cracked, occasionally soiled else a good but one of a kind item.

Edgar Allen Poe was a seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, influencing literary greats such as Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire.         Secret Agent (Set of original still photographs from the 1936 film).

      A set of 11 8 x 10 inch black and white original single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photograhs from the 1936 film Secret Agent. One photograph with staple pin holes in margins and signs of being mounted on paper at some stage otherwise in near fine condition. Based on Somerset Maugham's Ashenden stories and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Secret Agent starred Peter Lorre, John Gielgud and Madeleine Carroll. These photographs include two very striking portraits of Peter Lorre as the "Hairless Mexican", and a group shot of Hitchcock, Lorre, Carroll and Robert Young. Also included is a rare 4 page advertising foldout for the film, printed in orange and black with an image of Lorre on the front cover under the caption "Who is this sinister little man". Over printed on the back with the details of a screening at the Majestic Talkies cinema in Ajmer in India, with the exhortation that "It is the paramount duty of every true Britisher to encourage Britishh Film Industry in India by according his full measure of patronage to every British film when released for exhibition in his station".

      London: Jonathan Cape, 1936. First Edition thus. 2 volumes. Quarto. Publisher's brown cloth with titles in gilt to spines, top edges tinted, others untrimmed. In dustwrapper, with titles in black to spines and uppers. Portrait frontispiece to volume I; large folding colour map to rear of each volume and several other illustrations, many folding. The books are fine but for a little foxing to end papers and edges. The dustjackets are dusty but still bright, a little frayed along extremities, chipped to head and foot of spines and to corners; strengthened along the top and bottom edges with brown tape. A very attractive copy. Doughty's epic two-year journey through Europe to The Holy Land and Syria in the 1870s remained almost unknown to the public until, in 1908, an abridgement by Garnett under the title Wanderings in Arabia immediately gained for Doughty a host of admirers. In 1921 Travels in Arabia Deserta, long since out of print was reissued with a new preface by Doughty and an introduction by T. E. Lawrence. A new generation of readers accepted it as a classic of travel. Charles Montagu Doughty (1843-1926) was a poet and traveller. He read geology at Cambridge, he was reserved and serious, with strong antiquarian tastes, and had already begun to read sixteenth century literature and to study Teutonic languages. He resolved that it should be his life's task to serve his country and his mother tongue as a poet; to recall the legendary beginnings of the British race in verse which should revive the diction of Chaucer and of Spenser. Leaving Cambridge in 1865 he settled down to linguistic and antiquarian studies in long preparation for this task.In 1870, partly for the sake of economy and partly that he might visit the cradles of European civilisation, Doughty began his travels as a poor student. He went first to Holland, through France to Italy and then to Spain by way of Sicily and North Africa. In the summer of 1873 he went to Italy again and onto Greece. An ardent geologist he climbed Vesuvius in the eruption of 1872, an experience which he described twelve years later in Travels in Arabia Deserta. In 1874 he spent the summer and autumn wandering on foot through the Holy Land and Syria. A visit to Egypt followed, and early in 1875 he set out on a camel journey to Maan and Petra. Here he heard tales of other rock-monuments unseen by western eyes, at Medina Salith on the pilgrim road to Medina, and he determined to explore them, and proposed a survey of the Wadi Arabah region as a second object of his expedition.At Damascus, however, Doughty found the Turkish Authorities unwilling to let him join the Meccan pilgrim caravan; and the British Association and the Royal Geographical Society declined to aid him. So rebuffed he decided to enter Arabia at his own risk and charges. His original plan, however, was modified: instead of returning northwards from Medain Salih, he would join the Bedouin and live with them as a wandering physician. Adopting the name Khalil and the dress of an Arab Christian, he settled down at Damascus for a year to learn Arabic. In November 1876 he slipped out and quietly joined the pilgrim caravan.The journey led Doughty from Medain Salih to Hail, Kheybar, and the Kasim in central Arabia: it ended twenty one months later, on 2 August 1878, at Jiddah on the Red Sea. The unique value of his journey began with its second stage, when, alone with small funds, and stubbornly proclaiming himself an Englishman and a Christian, Doughty had to endure not only the fatigue and privation of desert life, also, in a measure spared to those travellers who have enjoyed powerful support or gone in disguise as Moslems, the suspicion and occasionally the violence of the Arab society to which he had entrusted himself. In these circumstances of difficulty he gathered a vast amount of new information about the geography and geology of north western Arabia, being the first to record accurately the true direction of the great watercourses of Wadi Hamd and Wadier Rumma. Of still greater value was the understanding that he gained of Arab Character and the conditions of nomad life. In these respects his contribution to western knowledge of Arabia was the greatest that had yet been made; and the acuteness and the wisdom his observation made him the acknowledged master of all later travellers.Doughty reached England at the end of 1878, broken in health by his ordeal. Continued weakness delayed publication of his results, his paper being printed in the Proceedings for July 1884.Doughty went to work on a fuller narrative, designed not only to be a faithful record of all that he had learned or suffered in Arabia, but the vehicle of his first experiment in Elizabethan English. Travels in Arabia Deserta, finished in 1864, was issued in 1886 by the Cambridge University Press, after it had been refused by four publishers.         Finite Combinatory Processes: Formulation 1.

      [The Association for Symbolic Logic], 1936. First edition, very rare offprint, of Post's formulation of the notions of computation and solvability by means of a theoretical machine very similar to the concept of a Turing machine proposed by Alan Turing in his famous paper 'On computable numbers.' Alonzo Church had, slightly earlier, identified effective calculability with general recursiveness and ?-definability ['An unsolvable problem in elementary number theory,' American Journal of Mathematics 58 (1936), 345-363]. The formulations of Church, Post and Turing were later shown to be equivalent, but while Church's and Turing's identifications are now famous under the heading 'the Church-Turing thesis', Post's formulation is less well known. Intending the model of computation presented in this paper as the first of a series of models of equivalent power but increasing complexity, Post titled his paper Formulation I. On the occasion of Post's death in 1954, W. V. Quine wrote: "Modern proof theory, and likewise the modern theory of machine computation, hinge on the concept of a recursive function. This important number-theoretic concept, a precise mathematical substitute for the vague idea of "effectiveness" or "computability," was discovered independently and in very disparate but equivalent forms by four mathematicians, and one of these was Post. Subsequent work by Post was instrumental to the further progress of the theory of recursive functions" (DSB). "In 1936, [Alonzo] Church founded a new quarterly devoted to contemporary research in logic: The Journal of Symbolic Logic. Its first volume contained a three-page paper by Emil L. Post, "Finite Combinatory Processes: Formulation 1". The editors added a footnote to the paper that read: "Received October 7, 1936. The reader should compare an article by A. M. Turing, On computable numbers, shortly forthcoming in Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. The present article, however, although bearing a later date, was written entirely independently of Turing's." Post (1897-1954) was at the time teaching at City College in New York City and had also contact with Church, both personal and through correspondence. "As to the remark concerning Post's paper, it would indeed be readily apparent to any reader of Turing's and Post's articles that their basic idea of "computation" was the same. Turing presented a machine model; his machines were "supplied with a 'tape' ... divided into sections, called 'squares', each capable of bearing a 'symbol'" from a finite list, possibly just two different ones. In the latter case we refer to the machine as a two-letter machine. Instead of a tape divided into squares, Post wrote of a "symbol space ... to consist of a two way infinite sequence of spaces or boxes"; each box could be either "marked" or "unmarked". In both conceptions, at a given instant, one particular square/box was in play, and the permitted basic operations were to change the symbol in the square/box and/or to move to an adjacent square/box. Turing imagined these steps carried out by a simple mechanism with a finite number of states where each step included a possible change of state. In Post's formulation, the computation is carried out by a human "worker" who is following a fixed sequence of instructions including what we would call a conditional jump instruction. The jump instruction is also part of a program for Turing's machine; depending on the symbol in the square and its state, the machine may follow a different next instruction" (Sommaruga & Strahm, pp. 4-5). In his paper Post did not, unlike Turing, prove the unsolvability of the Entscheidungsproblem ('decision problem'), probably because he was aware that this had already been settled by Church in 'An unsolvable problem in elementary number theory'. However, Post had in fact come close to solving this problem, as well as the incompleteness problem settled by Gödel, more than a decade earlier. "In 1920-1921 [Post] held a post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton. During this time he tried to analyse the whole Principia [Mathematica, 1910-13], with a view to proving its completeness and consistency as he had done for propositional calculus. This was the most ambitious project possible, because the axioms of Principia were thought to imply all theorems of mathematics. Nevertheless, Post made some progress: He showed that all theorems of Principia (and probably of any conceivable symbolic logic) could be derived by simple systems of rules he called normal systems ... Sometime in 1921, as he later claimed, he caught a glimpse of the true situation: Normal systems can simulate any symbolic logic, indeed any mechanical system for deriving theorems. This means, however, that all such systems can be mechanically listed, and the diagonal argument then shows that the general problem of deciding whether a given theorem is produced by a given system is unsolvable. It follows, in turn, that no consistent mechanical system can produce all theorems. "These discoveries of Post include (in different form) the discoveries of Turing on the nature of computability and unsolvability, and Gödel's theorem on the incompleteness of formal systems for mathematics. "The really big problem, in Post's view, was to show that all computation is reflected in normal systems. Without a precise definition of computation, the concept of unsolvable problem is meaningless" (Stillwell). In 1921, Post suffered an attack of bipolar disorder. The condition recurred frequently, often requiring hospitalization, and prevented his from obtaining an academic position until 1935. "By this time Post had seen two of his greatest ideas rediscovered by others. In 1931 Gödel published his incompleteness theorem, and in 1935 Church stated Church's thesis, which proposes a definition of computability and implies the existence of unsolvable problems. Church's definition of computability was not immediately convincing (at least not to Gödel), and some equivalent definitions were proposed soon after. The one that convinced Gödel was Turing's, now known as the Turing machine. Post's normal systems, another equivalent of the computability concept, were still unpublished. But this time Post had a little luck. Independently of Turing, and at the same time, he had reformulated his concept of computation, and had found a concept virtually identical with Turing's! It was published in a short paper in the 1936 Journal of Symbolic Logic, with a note from Church affirming its independence from Turing's work ... so in fact he completed his program in 1936. By then, unfortunately, it was too late for him to get credit for anything except a small share of the computability concept. Thus Post's proof of incompleteness was delayed because he was trying to do so much: the task he set himself in 1921 was in effect to do most of what Gödel, Church, and Turing did among them in 1931-36. "[The present paper] gave Post some recognition, but he was still in Turing's shadow. Turing had written a fuller paper, with clearer motivation and striking theorems on the existence of a universal machine and unsolvable problems. The world knew that Post had also found the definition of computation, but did not know that he had already seen the consequences of such a definition in 1921. In 1938, he met Gödel and tried to tell him his story. Perhaps the excitement was too much for Post, because he seems to have feared that he had not made a good impression. The next day, October 29, 1938, he sent Gödel a postcard that reads as follows: "I am afraid that I took advantage of you on this, I hope but our first meeting. But for fifteen years I had carried around the thought of astounding the mathematical world with my unorthodox ideas, and meeting the man chiefly responsible for the vanishing of that dream rather carried me away. "Since you seemed interested in my way of arriving at these new developments perhaps Church an show you a long letter I wrote to him about them. As for any claims I might make perhaps the best I can say is that I would have proved Gödel's theorem in 1921 had I been Gödel"" (Stillwell).  "As Turing left the subject of pure computability theory in 1939, his mantle fell on Post. Post continued the tradition of clear, intuitive proofs, of exploring the most basic objects such as computability and computably ennumerable sets, and, most of all, of exploring relative computability and Turing reducibility. During the next decade and a half, from 1940 until his death in 1954, Post played an extraordinary role in shaping the subject" (Soare, p. 242). This is at the cost of the removal of this "interpretation" and all the narrative elements that lead to it, Blanchot can turn the question posed in the story in question by the narrative.Because the manuscript reveals is that the story of Blanchot is not elliptical, structured by the absence of meaning, but willingly incomplete, prepared by successive withdrawals of the signifier.In this obvious deterioration of the internal sense to the story, we discover also that of the symbolic link between the elements of the story. Thus, the throttle Akim by another inmate, had in the original story a disturbing echo in the relationship of the director and his wife: "She wants him to live with this hand to the throat that the clamp enough to to death. There is no correction in the manuscript, the change is contemporary with the publication and not the writing.On purely literary terms, the figure of the foreigner returns, always in anticipation to that famous Camus (which Blanchot also be the first defender): "The theme that I recognize first because Camus make the familiar is designated the first words: 'stranger'. " The manuscript here only confirms the immediate importance of the designation of the character.Michael Holland particularly emphasizes these elements that disrupt the dating of the original text:"The Idyll, while motioning towards a past (1936) is being separated and thus disoriented in relation to it, marks the emergence of a narrative in Blanchot space quite original in which disaster looming in 1936 to become final in 1940 in the fictional narrative not a mirror but a speech which by its very impossibility, is the measure of what the disaster means. »Blanchot's insistence to reject the new in the distant past, pre-apocalyptic, with the first issue in 1947, leaves no surprise. He did the same in his dedications, specifying the untimeliness of these stories: "Unfortunately these ancient pages," he wrote on the two copies of the eternal rehashing he addressed to his brother and sister, as well as his sister and his mother (see our catalog March 2015) - also note the very mysterious "alas".But it was in 1983 in Aftermath, qu'insistant still long on this seniority "these old stories, so old (fifty years)"; Blanchot offers a disturbing put into perspective this emphasis: "before Auschwitz story. Sein erster und längster Aufenthalt war Hamburg, gerade ging das Jahr der Olympiade (1936) zu Ende. Das Gesicht des Nationalsozialismus nahm Konturen an. Beckett beschrieb dieses Deutschland Deutsch mit Englisch mischend: "Her Kraft durch Freude conversation kills me". Der Band der Raamin-Presse, der das "Hamburger Kapitel" referiert beginnt vorweg mit dem Gedicht "Cascando" in des Autors eigener deutscher Übersetzung. Der Text wird in der Gill mager 12 Punkt schwarz gedruckt, graublaue Marginalien aus der Gill 8 Punkt begleiten ihn.

Contains an original leaf from the Catholicon of 1460, whose production, as Stillwell argues in the essay within, should be credited to Johannes Gutenberg (some have argued that the second printing was achieved by Peter Schoeffer in 1469, after Gutenberg's death). Stillwell's work is divided into four parts and includes a registry of extant copies of the Catholicon of 1460. The single folio leaf measures 14 3/8 by 11 3/16 inches (365 x 284mm) and is printed on both sides with 66 lines in double columns, with red one-line rubricated initial capitals. The leaf is laid into a recessed panel in the inner rear cover, framed and held in place with silver clasps. The provenance of this copy, from which the leaves come, includes: "...the possession of Sir Hans Sloane prior to 1753 when it was acquired by Trustees of the newly founded British Museum...It next appeared in the library of Henry W. Poor at whose sale in November 1908 it was bought by Alvin W. Krech, the distinguised banker and bibliophile, the kind co-operation of whose family makes this re-publication possible..." Bound in full crimson buckram by Krumin of Boston, and stamped in blind and gilt on both covers. The leaf shows a few small marginal chips, else fine. The only memoir published by a true insider of the Charles Lindbergh kidnapping scandal. Dr. John F. Condon (Jafsie from his initials J.F.C.) acted as the intermediary between the kidnapper, Bruno Hauptmann and Charles Lindbergh. He was the only witness in the case who had ever met the kidnapper and therefore was able to positively I.D. Hauptmann in particular. A rare find this condition. Book bears a PO note of purchase amount in 1981 on the inside front board. Slight wear and soiling to spine. The original dust jacket is price-clipped. The jacket also bears several small chips and is worn and scuffed, especially at folds. Overall, a nice copy at the right price. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

      MGM 1936 - Vintage original 36 x 14" (90 x 35 cm.) insert poster, USA. Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy, Walter Connolly, Charley Grapewin, dir: Jack Conway; MGM. One of the finest screwball comedies of the 1930s. A most popular genre, this time given the opulent MGM treatment with all-star cast, Cedric Gibbons' art direction and Lawrence Weingarten as producer. When a false news story about a high society woman is hatched, the newspaper man, his jilted fiancé and his lawyer set out to make the story true before she can sue for libel. George Oppenheimer, Howard Emmett Rogers and Maurine Watkins adapted the Wallace Sullivan story, which was so popular that MGM resurrected it in a remake some ten years later. Though Harlow and Powell were a couple in real life at the time, audiences wanted more and more of the Powell/Loy team, and this was the fifth of their 14 films together. Jean Harlow loved the costumes made for her by Dolly Tree, and when she died a year after the making of this film, she was entombed in the gown Tree made for her role of Gladys Benton. Poster was folded and it has now been paper-backed and cleaned. The folds have been lightly addressed. There was a 4" (10 cm.) crease just above the top third fold from the left edge in and one 2" (5 cm.) tear at the bottom margin at the lower portion of Jean Harlow's shoulder, both professionally addressed.       Gollancz, 1936 A rst edition, rst printing published by Gollancz in 1936. A very good+ copy with some light spotting to the page edges, but very clean internally. SIGNED without dedication by the Author to the front endpaper. Previous owner (M M Chatterton) name and date to the front free endpaper also. Some light browning to the spine and some rubbing to the corners. In the scarce and fragile dust wrapper with the original price of 7/6 net on the spine. One neat professional repair to the head of the spine. A thin sliver of loss to the top of the rear panel. A few nicks here and there and the spine is a little browned. Du Mauriers masterpiece about the hostel which lies between Bodmin and Lauceston. The inn still welcomes weary travellers and also includes a museum in honour of Du Maurier. Exceptionally rare signed and in wrapper and housed in a custom made clamshell box.

Absalom, Absalom! is a Southern Gothic novel. Like many of his works, it is set in Jefferson, the seat of the fictional Yoknapatawpha County in Mississippi, based on Faulkner's childhood experiences in Oxford. Specifically, this novel tells the story of Thomas Stupen and his family before, during, and after the American Civil War as an allegory for the American South during the 19th and 20th centuries. After arriving in Jefferson with little to his name, Stupen builds himself a manor and establishes a successful plantation that quickly earns him a place among the Southern aristocracy. Stupen lives relatively peacefully until he prevents Charles Bon, the college classmate of his son Henry, from marrying his daughter Judith, because he recognizes Bon as his son from a previous marriage. Enraged, Henry and Bon break ties with Stupen and fight vehemently for the Confederacy during the war. When he finds out that Bon is not only his half-brother but also part African-American, Henry murders Bon. After seeing his family destroyed, the aging post-war Stupen declines in mental and physical health, slumping into a life of alcoholism and unhealthy relationships. The title Absalom, Absalom! refers to the Biblical story of Absalom, the rebellious son of King David. Along with The Sound and the Fury (1929), Absalom, Absalom! played a major role in Faulkner's receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature.       1936. With introductory passages on Fine Lettering & Handwriting. Quarto (300 x 232 mm), 16 leaves of Whatman handmade paper watermarked 1926. Contemporary calf-backed boards, florally patterned paper to sides, titles gilt to spine. 44 separate watercolour vignette illustrations of wildlife in the margins by hand. Covers a little rubbed, marked and bowed, the joints and hinges sound, internally fresh and clean but for a very few minor spots. Very good condition. A beautiful 23-page calligraphic manuscript on handmade paper, with watercolour wildlife vignette illustrations by hand, done in 1936 by calligrapher and painter Dorothy Hutton (1889-1984), who studied in the 1920s at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under F. Ernest Jackson, and exhibited throughout Britain, notably at the Royal Academy, in the 30s and 40s. She was official artist to the Crown Office, a member of the Art Worker's Guild, and produced florally decorated seasonal posters for London Transport 1922-54 (her poster designs are held by the London Transport Museum). This unrecorded manuscript, which given the lack of any presentation or ownership inscription may well have been executed for Hutton's own practice, pleasure and use, opens with a 5 page calligraphic guide to calligraphy, the ideal proportions of capital letters ("based on the Roman Inscriptions of the days of the Emperor Trajan c.144 AD"), and the correct type and angle of pen to use (she notes that "The Poems and Extracts in this Book are written with a quill pen which is what the Writing Masters of the 15th Century would have used"). The Poems and Extracts that follow, all beautifully accompanied by watercolour vignette illustrations of wildlife, are: W.H. Davies's "Leisure" ("What is this Life if full of care / We have no time to stand and satre?", an extract from Keats's "Ode on a Grecian Urn" ("'Beauty is truth, truth beauty'..."), Shakespeare's "Under the greenwood tree" song from As You Like It, William Blake's "The Tiger", Robert Greene's "Sweet are the thoughts that savour of content", an extract from Chaucer's Parlement of Fowles, an apparently original anthropomophic skit on birds and birdsong, Book XV of the 14th century Little Flowers of St Francis, Coleridge's "Sometimes a-dropping from the sky, / I heard the sky-lark sing", an anonymous poem on the robin in winter, "The North Wind doth blow / and we shall have snow, / and what will poor Robin do then, / poor thing...", a long boating extract from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, Robert Bridges's "I love all beauteous things...", and the Bible's Psalm 104 verses 1-24. The final page bears the colophone "This Book was arranged and decorated by Dorothy Hutton 1936", accompanied by her illustration of a skipping kid playing a shepherd's pipe. As well as an exquisite demonstration of the calligrapher's (and illustrator's) craft, this Medley of Happy Things gives a delightful example of a 1930s literary canon. Calligraphic manuscripts by Hutton are rare. Only a later 5 page calligraphic manuscript, on vellum and with similar watercolour wildlife vignettes, is recorded at auction, back in 1991. As such, at 23 pages, "When Shepherds Pipe" appears to be by far the most considerable piece of Hutton's charming illustrated calligraphy work to come to market.

A few small patches of soiling at the edges of the boards corresponding to chips from the jacket which is a little rubbed and soiled, and slightly ragged along the edges, but remains textually and pictorially complete, contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, text-block lightly toned, but altogether a very good copy. First edition, first impression of one of the classics of Great War literature, widely considered as the finest flying memoir of the war, and here offered in the exceptionally uncommon dust jacket. "At seventeen, standing 6 feet 4 inches tall and equipped with a precocious intelligence, Lewis lied about his age to join the Royal Flying Corps. He celebrated his eighteenth birthday in France, flying patrols over the western front at a time when the average life expectancy of a pilot was three weeks. On 1 July 1916 he flew the first patrol of the Somme offensive and witnessed the mile-high column of earth thrown up by the detonation of mines under the German positions. Later he duelled with the 'circus' of Manfred von Richthofen and was the last man to see the aircraft of Albert Ball VC, the allied ace who vanished in a bank of cloud. Lewis also hunted Gotha airships over London by moonlight, and in 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross for continuous bravery" (ODNB). On publication, the book was reviewed in the New Statesman by George Bernard Shaw, who Lewis had encountered while deputy director of programmes at the BBC, and who had permitted him make the first film adaptation of one of his plays. Shaw's high praise guaranteed the book's immediate success: "This is a book everyone should read. The recipient was the journalist and political commentator who as editor of the Sunday Dispatch was a close and important liegeman to Lord Rothmere. Brooks accompanied Rothmere on several re-armament missions to Europe, America and beyond throughout the 1930s. His status in this regard together with his pronounced right-wing leanings explains Lewis's early presentation of this particular work.

      London: Victor Gollancz, May 1936 - March 1947. 128 issues in original wrappers, housed in four quarto sized red cloth volumes. The first volume a little shaken in the binding. Very good condition onverall. A rare complete set of Gollancz's Left News. The Left News was edited by Victor Gollancz and circulated to members of the Left Book Club. "The rate of growth of the Club was impressive: the first book to be offered, in May 1936, was "France today and the People's Front" by Maurice Thorez (General Secretary of the French Communist Party), to which 5000 members subscribed, but by the end of that year the Club had grown to 20,000 members. By April 1939 the membership had reached to its highest point of 57,000, with 1,500 organised "Left Book Club Discussion Groups" in existence. Each book came with a news sheet of announcements, initially called Left Book News but soon renamed Left News, containing reviews of forthcoming books and articles on a "Topic of the Month", such as articles on Soviet Russia or the conflict in Spain... Following the outbreak of the War Club membership declined sharply, from 57,000 in 1939 to 15,000 in 1942, and in the post-war period this decline continued.         The Democratic Book

      1936 - This is a limited printing of The Democratic Book 1936 (384 pages), signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt under a color rendering of the White House, with the copy number, 192, at the bottom of that page, which has a tissue guard. This is in exceptional overall condition, with light edge wear and surface scuffs to the cover (app. 11.25" x 14.25"), a padded brown leather with gilt lettering, which is unfaded and bright. The original owner's name (Louis A. Boulay) is at the bottom of the front cover, which has no significant stains, and no notable color fade. The pages are almost uniformly clean, with light sunning to the borders, and a very few stains, none of which are significant. There are no tears or creases. The many photos and illustrations are clean and unfaded, as is all text. There are no stamps or other attachments. The only writings are the President's signature and the copy number. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the book's conditions. US shipping would be by priority express insured mail, with a shipping charge of $100.00.
