        Gone With the Wind

New York: Macmillan, 1936. First edition of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by Margaret Mitchell on the front free end paper. First printing, with "Published May 1936" on the copyright page and no mention of other printings. First issue dust jacket, with Gone with the Wind listed in the second column of the booklist on the back panel, with $3.00 cost on the front flap. Near fine in the original dust jacket with some light professional restoration to the extremities. A very nice example. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy. She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents ... it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. ... " In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse. "This is beyond doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best" (New York Times). Gone With the Wind is said to be the fastest selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day), and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize.

His conclusion, namely that "the regulation of the trade-cycle - that is to say the control of booms and slumps, the level of employment, the wage-scale and the flow of investment - must be the responsibility of governments", permanently altered the terms of economic debate and considerations of the role of government in managing the economy (or not).         Printed Document Signed.

      - The beloved and influential jazz trumpeter and gravel-voiced singer appeared in many films, most notably "Pennies from Heaven" (1936), "The Glenn Miller Story" (1954) and "Hello Dolly" (1969). One of the most bizarre Satchmo items we've handled -- and we've handled a lot: a printed DS, 1p, 8½" X 11", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1966]. Very good. Small yellow tape stain at each corner. Mimeographed letter headlined "SATCHMO SEZ." in which Armstrong raves at length about the medicinal benefits of his two favorite laxatives, "Swiss Kriss" and "Bis Ma Rex." Armstrong was known to have been excessively fond of laxatives from an early age, and in later years became a devotee and practically a walking billboard for these two brands, going so far as to hand out sample packets to friends and fans. He mentions "Swiss Kriss" several times his memoir, noting that he came up with an open letter to fans about these products. Offered here is a signed copy of this very same letter. Along the top edge, he boldly writes in his characteristic green ink, "To Donald M. Burnell / from Louis Armstrong." Then, vertically down the blank left margin, he signs again, large and bold. The printed text reads in part: "How to take Swiss Kriss -- the Satchmo Way . Take a teaspoonful of Swiss Kriss ever night when going to bed. People who suffer with gas -- cancer -- and ulcers should at least take a broken dose of Swiss Kriss religiously every night for the rest of their lives." About Bis Ma Rex, Satchmo preaches: "Gas is an awful thing to have . If you can -- always keep B.M.R. around the house . It is good for many, many things . and all illnesses come from the stomach. There's no such thing as an overdose." He also points out: "There's no business interest between me and these two companies. I buy my Swiss Kriss and Bis Ma Rex the same as anybody else. For three years I thought I had Ulcers . And it wasn't a'thing but Gas. It actually thrills me to be able to 'Hipp' my Public to what's 'Happening in the "Gas Section"' . Yeah . " He continues in this jazzy colloquial fashion for some time, of course concluding with "Merry Swiss Kriss and Happy Bis Ma Rex." Fascinating and strange. Accompanied by a fine 8" X 10" glossy black and white photograph of Armstrong playing, eyes gazed upward. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1936 - 1936 Wisden Original Hardback Presentation Copy.

Hi, This lot is a 1936 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, excellent for the year. It also had the added bonus of being a presentation copy, signed by WH Brookes (Editor) to future editor Norman Preston which makes the book very unique. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. The gilt to the front and spine is ever so slightly fading as per the year and the boards are dulled, this book however is a lot better than an average 1936. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The hinges are strong. Old address sticker to the first page and removable post-it-note stating the endorsement. The previous owner had a bat bookmark inserted loosly froma paperback. Internally very good without restoration with an excellent photoplate.

Octavo, pp. [1-10] 1-81 [82] [83: printer's imprint] [84-86: blank] [note: first two and last leaves are blanks], original mottled green and black cloth, printed paper label affixed to spine panel. First edition. A presentation copy from one ghost story writer to another with signed inscription by Wells on the half title page to Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) who lived in Regent's Park from 1935 until after the end of World War II: "To Elizabeth Bowen / with warmest regards / H. G." "This story is a satire written in the form of an allegory. In its symbolism it has close affinities with THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU (1896) and MR. BLETTSWORTHY ON RAMPOLE ISLAND (1928)." - Hammond, p. 44. "In some ways a more mature telling and redirection of 'The Red Room,' or hauntings as due to mental fragments that have assumed a power beyond their immediate origin. It is also a symbolic statement of the psychosis emergent within Western culture just before World War II. 'A sickness in the very ground of our lives, breaking out here and there and filling men's minds with a paralyzing irrational fear.' The ghost story as a statement of the spiritual breakdown of society ... One of Wells's better late works." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1683. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-1224.         The Southern Gates of Arabia.

London: John Murray,, 1936. A Journey in the Hadhramaut. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, facsimile of Stark's signature to front board gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Title page printed in red and black, 96 plates, 2 folding maps. Spine gently rolled, scattered pale markings to cloth, contents slightly toned, a few trivial spots to front free endpaper. A very good copy. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Mr. Guest with affectionate and grateful thanks for much help, from Freya May 1936" on the front free endpaper. Arthur Rhuvon Guest (1869–1946) was an accomplished Arabist who helped Stark with her original researches into Hadramawt history, and read the manuscript. In the acknowledgements Stark thanks Guest "for his invaluable assistance during the writing of my book – an assistance to which such Islamic learning as appears within its pages is chiefly due". After achieving recognition with her first book The Valley of Assassins (1934), which described travels in Iraq and Iran, Stark went to Hadramawt, southern Arabia, in search of ancient trade routes, landing at Mukallah and travelling inland to Tarim via Jol, Wadi Daw'an, Khuraybah, and such ancient cities as Shibam and Sayun. She returned a celebrity, and her book, "often considered a classic of travel writing" (ODNB) was awarded the Mungo Park medal by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
