        Liquid-Propellant Rocket Development

1936. First Edition . GODDARD, Robert H. Liquid-Propellant Rocket Development. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution, March 16, 1936. Octavo, modern full burgundy cloth gilt. $3200.First separate edition of GoddardÂ’s research on rocket fuel, containing “the first public mention of his historic 1926 liquid-fueled rocket launch” (Ciancone 85), with 11 pages of black-and-white photographs. On March 16, 1926, Goddard ""flew the world's first liquid propellant rocket from a site near Auburn, Massachusetts. The ten-foot rocket, with the engine mounted on the nose, reached an altitude of 41 feet, traveled 184 feet over the ground, and landed 2.5 seconds after lift-offÂ… Fearful that his ideas would be stolen by unscrupulous rivals, Goddard refused to share the details of his technology with other experimenters. His most significant publication after 1919, Liquid Propellant Rocket Development, which appeared in a March 1936 issue of the Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, contained so little specific information that it was of limited value to other rocket experimenters"" (ANB).         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1936 - 1936 Wisden Original Hardback

1936. Hi, This lot is a 1936 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, excellent for the year. It also had the added bonus of being a presentation copy, signed by WH Brookes (Editor) to future editor Norman Preston which makes the book very unique. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. The gilt to the front and spine is ever so slightly fading as per the year and the boards are dulled, this book however is a lot better than an average 1936. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The hinges are strong. Old address sticker to the first page and removable post-it-note stating the endorsement. The previous owner had a bat bookmark inserted loosly froma paperback. Internally very good without restoration with an excellent photoplate.

The Bride of Frankenstein (sequel to the movie, Frankenstein).

Queensway Press 1936 - Rare First (?) Edition. Not dated on title page but published in 1936. Not in British Library who hold the Readers Library edition. This novelization of the 1935 movie sequel to Frankenstein (1931) is said to be one of the best horror movies of all time. The working title of this film was The Return of Frankenstein and starred Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester. The cheap cased binding is in poor condition discoloured and stained but the contents is Very Good: clean throughout on soft white paper with no inscriptions. The front recto endpaper is present as is the half-title, so the 252 page text block is complete with just slight spotting to edges and dusty top edge. So, I would suggest that this would make an excellent re-binding project (perhaps using the famous movie poster?) which with imagination could make a highly attractive looking book whilst maintaining its collectable and rare status.       London: The Nonesuch Press, 1936. First edition, LIMITED, one of only 750 copies for sale, this copy being number 155. Included with this copy is the publisher's original sales prospectus which features two tipped in leaf reprints. Also included is a copy of the Autumn 1935 Nonesuch News letter which also announces this work along with other famous Nonesuch printings such as the Nonesuch Herodotus. Wonderfully illustrated, with an engraved portrait of Francis Meynell by Eric Gill, three pages of printer's devices, six photogravure plates of bindings, 52 pages reproducing text and title pages, and 45 inserts of flawlessly reprinted leaves from the original works tipped on sturdy gray stock, many of which are bifolia. Folio, in the publisher's original polished green buckram with a black morocco spine label gilt lettered and tooled, and in the rare original dust jacket. xi, 80, [20], [54], [45] pp. A very fine copy, the jacket has done its job properly and the green cloth which is almost always found faded is bright and fresh with only the slightest touch of mellowing only just at the very tips of the spine, very unusual thus, internally very fine, the prospectus and news letter fine as well, the jacket handsome and well preserved with some very minor rubbing or shelf-wear at the edges and folds. FIRST EDITION AND AN UNCOMMONLY BRIGHT AND APPEALING COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK ON THE NONESUCH PRESS. The appraisal is by A. J. A. Symons, publisher, biographer and bibliogapher. The Personal note is byFrance Meynell who co-founded and was the primary printer for the Nonesuch Press. The Bibliography is by Desmond Flower, noted publisher, book-collector, scholar and writer. The inserted printed leaves from the various publications are of highest interest in the work and are perfect in their execution. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1922 by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel, and their mutual friend David Garnett. Their first book, a volume of John Donne's Love Poems was issued in May 1923. The press was at its peak throughout the 1920s and 1930s, but would remain operating through the mid-1960s and eventually produced over 140 books. But their finest and now most prized works are within the first 100 covered in this work.

Record of his Abdication Speech, (1894-1972, King of Great Britain, later the Duke of Windsor)]

1936 - side 1 bears a printed 'Part I', the rest of the title with the date is in neat manuscript, apparently contemporary, the label on the other playing side is blank, 2 sides 10 inches, [Windsor Castle], December in a fine presentation box An early exemplar of one of the most famous broadcasts of the 20th century. It was recorded by BBC engineers in defiance of official orders. An exceptionally rare piece. I have a playable recording of the record. There is a sound dropout on the second side but you can still hear what he says. This is more complete version than is generally known. You can hear him rustling of paper and he is introduced by John Reith who you can hear leaving the room with the door closing behind him - it was recorded at Windsor.

George Grosz was an influential German artist known for caricatural drawings and paintings and was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity group during the Weimar Republic. Grosz fled his homeland in 1933 and emigrated to the United States becoming a naturalized citizen in 1938. Interregnum, printed on hand-moulded Rives paper, had an announced print run of 300. According to the Museum of Modern Art only approx. 42 copies were issued (including regular edition of 30, deluxe edition of approx. 10, and 2 artist's proofs) , making this issue somewhat rare. In an article published by James A. Van Dyke in Duke University's New German Critique, Van Dyke states "Grosz's depiction of the interrogation and torture of political prisoners such as Erich Mühsam in the concentration camps established after Hitler's appointment as Reich chancellor. Grosz's drawings, compared with other representations of the camps in the mainstream press and by left-wing artists, are distinguished by their treatment of the masculinities of both the perpetrators and the victims. Gay Nazis, frequently evoked by the left-wing press in the early 1930s, abuse impotent antifascist intellectuals, incessantly ridiculed by Grosz in his letters. Thus the article concludes that the portfolio not only offered a mordant critique of Nazi brutality but also dismissed European civilization. Both Nazi perpetrators and their victims embodied perverse or abject masculinities that Grosz, who portrayed himself as a priapic heterosexual artist in the American landscape, rejected." A movie based on the portfolio was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Short in 1960.; Lithograph; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Signed by Artist .
