Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, brown endpapers. With the illustrated dust jacket. Captions in English and French. Large folding colour map and 56 photographic plates. Slight rubbing to extremities and spine joints, a couple of small marks to cloth, loss of gilt to spine and a little to front cover, front inner hinge just starting, a very good, fresh, copy in the uncommon, browned, jacket with tape repair to both sides, slight chips to spine ends and tips, closed tear to head of fold of front panel and spine, short closed tear to foot of front panel, creasing to extremities, abrasion to rear panel. First edition, first impression, of this photographic tour of the Yangtze River. The author, travelling from Yichang to Chongqing on a steamer, narrates the trip, detailing the geography, scenery, and culture of the places visited. The text is accompanied by 56 full page illustrations, providing a stunning guide to the river as it was in the period between the Chinese National Revolution of 1928 and the Chinese Communist Revolution of 1949. Some of the scenes portrayed here were unfortunately destroyed during the building of the Three Gorges Dam, completed in 2012, which flooded a number of archaeological and cultural sites. This attractive work is highly uncommon, with just two copies traced institutionally in the UK.

Ernest Hemingway
New York: Charles Scribner. Condition: Good / Good. An unusual copy of the 1935 1st edition, 2nd state (without the "A" on the copyright page). From the personal library of noted literary critic Maxwell Geismar (who, among other things, wrote the Introduction to Eldridge Cleaver's "Soul on Ice"). Geismar has heavily highlighted this copy --clearly his working copy-- in color pencil and has made several extensive margin notes. (A fascinating glimpse into the working methods of a major mid-century American critic). A presentable, "starter" copy to boot. The boards are relatively clean, the binding solid, the dustjacket --in spite of a few chips and some creasing-- is 95% present. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

ONCHI Koshirô, editor
1935. ONCHI Koshiro, editor. A set of SHOSÔ Magazine. Tokyo, Showa 10-19 [1935-44] Aoi Shobo. [700cc?]. A large collection of the premier journal dedicated to the book arts and graphics of its day, edited by the foremost artist and book designer, Onchi Koshiro, and filled with graphic and textual contributions by contemporary giants. Shoso had some 103 numbers issued in two formats, either as octavo-size, paper-wrappered magazines or as simple pamphlets of 4-8 pages. This set is comprised of 30 of the 31 magazine format issues, lacking only issue #79, and 6 of the slender pamphlet issues from the late 1930s, which have proven to be quite ephemeral and scarce, along with 2 postcards and an envelope from the artist Takei Takeo and Onchi. It is an unusual collection, especially with the scarce pamphlet issues, postcards and envelope, and with such an extensive near-complete run of the more substantial magazine issues, since several have sought-after prints by Onchi and Yasunori Taninaka, among others. Very good condition overall.

Privately printed for the author, for private circulation only. [c.1935]. First edition, first printing of this notorious roman à clef. First edition, first printing of this notorious roman à clef. Original grey card printed in black to the upper cover. A very good copy, the binding firm and without loss or tears, the covers a little dusty and marked. The contents with some spotting of the text block are entirely complete, without loose or torn pages and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Rare in commerce. A spoof of Radclyffe Hall's banned lesbian novel "The Well of Loneliness" in the style of an Angela Brazil girl's school story! The author depicts himself as the headmistress Miss Carfax and mocks the jealousies and intrigues of his homosexual circle as members of the Radcliff Hall girls' school (drawn from incidents at Faringdon). The indiscretions alluded to (involving intimates and acquaintances such as Cecil Beaton [Cecily Seymour], Peter Watson [Lizzie Johnson], Tchelitchew [Madame Yoshiwara], David Herbert, Robert Heber Percy and Oliver Messel) created uproar resulting in most copies being destroyed at the request and effort of one or more of those portrayed. COPAC locates copies in only three locations: The British Library, Bodleian (two copies) and The National Trust (Sissinghurst). Maurice Walsh
London: Chambers, 1935. Condition: Very Good plus in an about Very Good dust jacket. First Edition, preceding all others. A phenomenally popular novel in the UK and Ireland upon publication, and basis for the iconic 1952 John Ford film, "The Quiet Man," starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. The UK edition went well into multiple printings, the small first printing having always been extremely scarce, particularly in jacket. Very Good plus in an about Very Good dust jacket. Slight lean, neat contemporary owner name on the front endpaper ("D. MacKellaig"), a strip of fading along the bottom edge of the boards, light foxing to the page edges. Dashiell Hammett
Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM. Condition: Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold brads. Dashiell Hammett's original submitted treatment for the first sequel to "The Thin Man," here referred to only as "Thin Man Sequel," and ultimately titled "After the Thin Man." With a single holograph correction by Hammett, and letter of provenance from Hammett's daughter Josephine Hammett Marshall regarding the discovery of the treatment in the family's estate. The first "Thin Man" film, released in 1934 and based on Hammett's novel, was a smash hit and is today a key film in the American screwball comedy cycle. Five sequels were made between 1936 and 1947 (all starring the original acting team of William Powell and Myrna Loy), and this previously unknown attempt at a sequel by Hammett was clearly commissioned by MGM but never produced. The story is a completely original one, never reworked for the other films, very much written in Hammett's trademark style and reading a bit more like a story treatment (i.e., a novel) than a final screenplay, which is likely as far as the story got on the road to production. The piece is dated Sept. 17, 1935 at the lower right corner of the front panel, along with Hammett's name, and Hammett's name is noted in pencil next to the title label (though not in Hammett's hand). Probably one of only 2-3 copies that could have been produced, and very possibly the only copy extant. To our knowledge, no other copy of this story, in any form, has ever been recorded at auction or sold on the market. Light blue titled wrappers, with the wh … [Click Below for Full Description]

The artist confessed that he had never read the work, and so Macy provided him with a French translation, although many believe that he never read the novel before beginning the compositions. It could be this reason why all of the illustrations are controversially taken from Homer, a factor which could have contributed to Joyce's reluctance to sign the entire edition. Frankfurter, Felix]
[Harvard Law School, 1935. 4to. Notebook from the Harvard Coop in contemporary half calf and pebbled cloth, stamped 'Record' in gilt on the spine. 174, [4] manuscript pages in neat blue and red ink; other notes tipped in neatly. Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965) was the leading professor of the law of the modern Administrative State. He taught at Harvard Law School from 1914 to 1939. A reform-minded public intellectual, he was a trusted adviser to President Roosevelt in the New Deal years. Roosevelt nominated him to the United States Supreme Court after Justice Cardozo died in 1938. An acrimonious confirmation hearing-- emphasizing Frankfurter's foreign birth [with the usual anti-Semitic subtext] and his close relationship with President Roosevelt-- ensued. He took his seat on the Court in January 1939 and served for the next 23 years. These detailed lecture notes, taken by an obviously conscientious and motivated student in the Class of 1935, are a magnificent window on Professor Frankfurter's teaching style and methods at one of the Nation's premier law schools during an exciting era of legal transition. The class concerned Public Utilities, a particular branch of administrative law. As Goldstein notes, "Course is on the law of the I.C.C. P.U.'s have always been subj. to regulation. Comprehensive regulation dates from the I.C.A. of 1887." The undated notes include citations to decisions made as late as March 1934 (page 4). Goldstein's thorough, well-organized, and legible notes reflect Frankfurter's close attention to the details of statutes and case law, and the context in w … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Hays Hammond
Gloucester Massachusetts and others: self published. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. An archive of material related to American Inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr. The archive includes 4 letters to Janet Mabie (of Eaton Centre, New Hampshire) all from 1935. 2 comment on a Mr. Lear "who curiously enough is in the same situation that I am in regard to the Navy and foreign patents. Perhaps we may be able to work together to break up this ridiculous threat upon the part of the Navy Department." The other 2 related to Miss Mabie gathering notes for "magazine use" and Hammond setting up a meeting between Mabie and Herbert Stone of Yachting magazine. In addition to these letters, there is an 8 page carbon typescript (8 1/2 x 11 inches) about Hammond by Mabie that is quite interesting, giving insights into Hammond as a person and inventor. It is a fascinating read, and no doubt would add (if not published, which we have not been able to confirm one way or the other) to the portrait of Hammond known today. Lastly the archive contains 2 black and white photographs of portions of Hammond's Castle in Gloucester Mass, called Abbadia Mare. Hammond built this eclectic mansion, which stands still today as a museum. Hammond was an American Inventor with a large number of patents, second only to Edison himself. His work was very eclectic, although he was perhaps best known for his work in radio controlled operation of various kinds. Some have termed him the Father of Radio Control. FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT. Taps at Reveille. New York: Scribners, 1935. First Edition, First Issue. This was the office file copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's agent, Harold Ober, to whom this book is dedicated with his bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper and with the Harold Ober Associates stamp at the front pastedown. Fitzgerald did not inscribe a copy of this book to Ober, so this volume is the closest thing to a dedication copy. Very good copy with some minor edge wear and a bit of fraying to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine in a very good plus bright dust jacket with a hint of dust soiling and age toning, mainly to the spine and rear panel. Harold Ober (1881 - 1951) was one of America's most respected and successful literary agents. He represented such distinguished authors as William Faulkner, and is perhaps best known for both his professional and personal association with F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ober's relationship with Fitzgerald was particularly close and supportive, and like any complex alliance, it suffered through occasional bouts of conflict and contention. Over the years Ober played an integral role in the cultivation of Fitzgerald's career, offering professional counsel and financial assistance, often giving him advances against unsold stories. After Fitzgerald's wife Zelda was institutionalized, Harold and Anne Ober stepped in as virtual foster parents to the Fitzgerald's young daughter, Scottie. When Fitzgerald died suddenly in Hollywood, CA while working on The Last Tycoon, his companion Sheilah Graham's first call was to Ober, with whom Scottie w … [Click Below for Full Description]
