George Gershwin check signed while "Porgy and Bess" was on Broadway!

New York, NY, October 11, 1935. 6.375" x 2.75". "Partly printed check No. 3313 signed ""George Gershwin"" and dated October 11, 1935. Drawn from Gershwin's personal bank account at the National City Bank of New York, imprinted with his home address ""132 East 72nd Street"", and made payable to ""Schneider & Co."" for $8.54. Stamped endorsement verso provides payee's Manhattan address, and tine bank cancellation holes do not touch the composer's bold signature. In very fine condition, measuring 6.375"" x 2.75"". George Gershwin (1898-1937) dropped out of high school to pursue his musical career, working as a demonstration pianist for a Detroit-based piano roll publishing firm at age 15. He began arranging and composing while still a teenager. Gershwin collaborated with songwriters, lyricists and his older brother Ira (1896-1983) to compose popular Broadway musicals such as Lady, Be Good (1924), and many others. During the remainder of his short career, Gershwin composed classical, musical, and "folk opera" oeuvres, including Rhapsody in Blue (1924), An American in Paris (1928), Porgy and Bess (1935), and Hollywood music scores.Although his interest in music started later than many other musical protégés, Gershwin made up for lost time. In the mid-1920s, Gershwin traveled to Europe with the intent to study intensively under more well-established musicians, but on several occasions, he was pointedly turned away. Ultimately, Gershwin did forge his own distinct musical language. Gershwin once said, "true music must reflect the thought and aspirations of the people and the time. My people are Americans. My time is today."Gershwin's "folk opera" Porgy & Bess had opened on Broadway to rave reviews the day before Gershwin signed this check, on October 10, 1935. The musical ran for 124 performances until closing in January 25, 1936. Theatre critic Brooks Atkinson's New York Times opening night review was entitled ""Dramatic Values of Community Legend Gloriously Transposed in New Form With Fine Regard for Its Verities,"" while Times music critic Olin Downes's headline was ""Exotic Richness of Negro Music and Color of Charleston, S.C., Admirably Conveyed in Score of Catfish Row Tragedy"".         Black Tents of Arabia (My Life Among the Bedouins).

1935 - London, Hutchinson, [1935]. 8vo. Original black cloth, lettered in white (remainder binding); pp. 280, 24, (advertisements); numerous illustrations from photographs, one folding table of named horses; cloth a little marked and with lettering of spine partially lost, else a very good copy. Scarce first edition of a major work discussing Arab horses and camels, among ethnographic observations. A minor incident had resulted in the author becoming a blood brother of Amir Fuaz, a member of the Ruala Bedouins, one of the largest Bedouin tribes. His experiences during numerous visits to the tribe in the years following the First World War are recounted in the present work. Inhabiting the region of northern Arabia, the Ruala prove to be fierce hosts, and Raswan records instances of skirmishes between marauding bands, alongside enjoyment of pursuits such as falconry. The majority of plates depict horses and camels, at work and rest and being cared for. The table lists Arabian Horses of "known" ('asil') descent in both Arabic and English transliteration. Carl Reinhard Raswan (1893-1966), born Carl Reinhard Schmidt was the scholar of Arabian bloodlines, he also published the Raswan Index, an extensive compilation of Arabian horse pedigrees and strain information. He advocated tolerance and understanding of Bedouin ways of life and culture in Arabia. Raswan's life in Arabia and the US is definitely worth a full-length biography.         Peiping.

[Peiping].: Peiyang Press.. (circa1934).. Coloured folding plan of Peking with original envelope. 60 x 50cm. A few neat repairs at folds, two panels evenly browned on reverse. A very good copy of a scarce pictorial plan with its envelope. This delightful and scarce pictorial map of Peking with landmarks and streets in romanised Chinese, with occasional Chinese characters, is surprisingly scarce. Although apparently issued in several editions in the 1920s and 30s, it appears relatively infrequently on the market. The divisions of the Legation District are indicated by their flags - this edition shows the German Legation by use of the black, white and red bands of the German flag. This flag which was no longer used after 1935 helps date this edition. Other landmarks and attractions shown included theatres, foreign shopping area adjacent to the legations quarter, Liu Li Chang Curio District, the racecourse, the many city gates etc. .

Photo Album]: The Bergman-Osterberg Physical Training College 1932 - 1935

Hampstead, England 1935 - Oblong octavo. String-tied green leather album with stamped gilt decorations measuring 7.5" x 11". Contains 106 captioned black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3" x 2" to 5" x 3". The album has some modest tears, and some bowing with the pages overall near fine or better with slight age toning along the edges. A photo album of Yvonne Greenwood's experience at the Bergman-Osterberg Physical Training Camp for women between 1932 and 1935. Depicted throughout are women exercising, dancing, helping one another with handstands, and playing various sports such as swimming, tennis, and netball (a sport which was created by Martina Bergman-Osterberg). The school was founded by the Swedish born Bergman-Osterberg in Hampstead in 1885, before moving to Dartford in 1895. In addition to being the first physical education instructor's college in England, attendance was limited to women. Bergman-Osterberg believed that by directly encouraging women to be active in sport and education she was helping aid in women's emancipation. Bergman-Osterberg also revolutionized the way women dressed for physical activity by replacing the corset for the gymslip which she created in 1892 and which can be seen throughout the photos. The album portrays the women of the college freely participating in activities where they were encouraged to take care of themselves and make themselves better people through the use of sport, dance, and calisthenics. The college helped contribute to the social change that was occurring throughout the 1920s and 30s. This album provides an extensive look at early women's physical education.         BROADSIDES, A COLLECTION OF NEW AND OLD SONGS, 1935.

Dublin: Cuala Press, 1935. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF W.B. YEATS'S BROADSIDES, ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SIGNED BY W.B. YEATS AND F.R. HIGGINS AT END OF INTRODUCTORY ESSAY AND ACCOMPANIED BY BREATHTAKING HAND-COLORED ILLUSTRATIONS. Collection of 12 broadsides originally issued individually from January-December 1935. Containing both traditional and new Irish ballads written by Yeats, F.R. Higgins, Padraic Colum, and others. With engraved music throughout.Numerous evocative and emotional hand-colored woodblock illustrations, including many by Jack B. Yeats, brother of the famed W.B Yeats.  Only 300 copies printed, with only 100 copies bound and signed, making this production EXTREMELY RARE. Signed by Yeats and Higgins at the end of their preface, Anglo-Irish Ballads."Yeats is now seen as one of a handful of Irish writers whose influence and example helped create twentieth-century modernist literature in the English language...his huge international reputation is securely based on the mystery and grandeur of his late verse and the poignancy of his love poetry, but he first came to fame as the exotically Celtic poet of a 'new' nationalist Ireland: almost single-handed, he made Irishness culturally fashionable. Spearheading a great cultural renaissance, he moved into his maturity as the voice of his country" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) .It was not merely Yeats, however, who is responsible for arousing Irish patriotism.  The Cuala Press, a small press started by Yeat's sister Elizabeth, is regarded as one of the first publishing houses to bring attention to Irish literature, art and music.  Her production of Broadsidesis no different. "The glory that once was Ireland and could again be Ireland was the fire that burned unquenched in the mind and will of Elizabeth Corbett Yeats" (Colby Library Quarterly) .Dublin: Cuala Press, 1935. Small folio, original cloth backed boards with paper label to upper cover. Complete with what is almost certainly the original plain unlettered dust jacket (we can find no other examples of the jacket, but this is comparable to other jackets for Cuala Press books). Book remarkably bright and clean with only a couple of tiny spots to cloth. A few chips to dust jacket. Housed in vibrant red custom box. An VERY RARE AND NEARLY PERFECT COPY of a book of large cultural importance with dazzlingly fresh illustrations. Fine / Very Good.

With engraved music throughout. Numerous evocative and emotional hand-colored woodblock illustrations, including many by Jack B. Yeats, brother of the famed W.B Yeats. Only 300 copies printed, with only 100 copies bound and signed, making this production EXTREMELY RARE. Signed by Yeats and Higgins at the end of their preface, Anglo-Irish Ballads. "Yeats is now seen as one of a handful of Irish writers whose influence and example helped create twentieth-century modernist literature in the English language.his huge international reputation is securely based on the mystery and grandeur of his late verse and the poignancy of his love poetry, but he first came to fame as the exotically Celtic poet of a 'new' nationalist Ireland: almost single-handed, he made Irishness culturally fashionable. Spearheading a great cultural renaissance, he moved into his maturity as the voice of his country" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) . It was not merely Yeats, however, who is responsible for arousing Irish patriotism. The Cuala Press, a small press started by Yeat's sister Elizabeth, is regarded as one of the first publishing houses to bring attention to Irish literature, art and music. Her production of Broadsidesis no different. "The glory that once was Ireland and could again be Ireland was the fire that burned unquenched in the mind and will of Elizabeth Corbett Yeats" (Colby Library Quarterly) . Dublin: Cuala Press, 1935. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Franklin Roosevelt, as President ALS to his son, signed twice from the San Diego Naval base!

San Diego, California, October 2, 1935. 6.5" x 3.5". "Single page ALS on lightly lined paper, 5"" x 8"". Dated ""Oct 2"", and signed by Franklin Roosevelt as ""Pa"" within the letter. Accompanied by the signed and autographed envelope, 6.5"" x 3.5"", stamped and postmarked ""Oct 2 / 1935"", and signed in full by Roosevelt to his son as ""Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr"". The letter has expected folds and both the letter and envelope have light scattered small stains. We know from history that on October 2, 1935, the date of this letter, FDR embarked on the USS Houston at 1500 and left immediately to review the Fleet tactical exercises. He was accompanied by Adm Joseph M Rieves, U.S.N. Commander-in-Chief. The overall importance of this naval base cannot be overstated.Only 20 years earlier, in 1912 the US saw a Strategic value to station warships in the harbor of San Diego, and by 1919 Congress approved a plan for a naval training station, a naval hospital, a naval repair base and a fleet landing in San Diego. Although still concerned about the bay's shallow waters and narrow channel, the Navy began transferring destroyers to San Diego because of concern about Japan's expansionism. By 1922, The Navy formally creates the U.S. Destroyer Base San Diego while pushing the city to dredge more of the bay to allow for larger ships. Ultimately this base became significant in the participation of the attack on Pearl Harbor as FDR, in 1940, shifted most U.S. warships from this strategic base to Pearl Harbor.Today the San Diego naval base is one of the largest bases of the United States Navy and is the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet, consisting of 50 ships and over 120 tenant commands.Roosevelts fascinating ALS to his son the day of embarking on the USS Houston was signed by him using his affectionate and personal reference of ""Pa"" and is shown below:""San Diego / Oct 2Dearest Brud I shall miss you much on the grand old Houston - We go aboard in a few hours - there the Fleet exercises, thru Southward. Take care of yourself If you can come to H.P. for Sunday Nov 3 it would be grand.Just so much love fromYour dearestPa""A unique and rare personal ALS from President Roosevelt to his son from a location which was just years later to hold major significance for the US during WWII."

[Two Autograph Letters, Signed, to Sylvia Lynd]

Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, and 5 Raymond Buildings, Gray's Inn, 1935. 4 pages, in ink, on two octavo lettersheets with letterheads (one in blind). Folded for mailing, very good. Sir Edward Marsh, translator, politician and patron of poets, writes to author, Sylvia Lynd, on business matters: "I have given your letter to the P.M.'s P.S. for the Civil List Pensions ... who was very encouraging, & wd like you to send him a note on Miss Mayne & her circumstances to 10 Downing St. ... I can hardly imagine any one who wd be a better 'case' for the Civil List ... tho' the sums are terribly small! I have no say in the matter myself ...." In the second letter, he writes "... I've just got such an unhappy letter from my great friend Lady Lytton, who writes in deep distress about the desire of the Book Society to leave out 'Viscount Knebworth' from the title of Lytton's book. She says 'It was Antony's name, & his name shd be recorded: it is nothing to be ashamed of. He was 'Antony' to his & our friends, but 'Lord K' to the public. ... I am sure that if the Committee understood how much we care & feel about it they would leave it in ... My own opinion is neither here nor there, & no doubt there are strong reasons for the omission; but I hope you'll agree I am bound to pass on what she says. -- I'm also writing to ... E. Blunden ...."
