BROADSIDES, A COLLECTION OF NEW AND OLD SONGS, 1935

Dublin: Cuala Press, 1935. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION. Fine/Very Good. ILLUSTRATIONS BY: YEATS, JACK B; BROWN, VICTOR; O'SULLIVAN, SEAN; PEET, E.C; KERNOFF, HARRY; MCGONIGAL, MAURICE MUSIC BY DUFF, ARTHUR. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF W.B. YEATS'S BROADSIDES, ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SIGNED BY W.B. YEATS AND F.R. HIGGINS AT END OF INTRODUCTORY ESSAY AND ACCOMPANIED BY BREATHTAKING HAND-COLORED ILLUSTRATIONS. Collection of 12 broadsides originally issued individually from January-December 1935. Containing both traditional and new Irish ballads written by Yeats, F.R. Higgins, Padraic Colum, and others. With engraved music throughout. Numerous evocative and emotional hand-colored woodblock illustrations, including many by Jack B. Yeats, brother of the famed W.B Yeats.  Only 300 copies printed, with only 100 copies bound and signed, making this production EXTREMELY RARE. Signed by Yeats and Higgins at the end of their preface, Anglo-Irish Ballads. "Yeats is now seen as one of a handful of Irish writers whose influence and example helped create twentieth-century modernist literature in the English language...his huge international reputation is securely based on the mystery and grandeur of his late verse and the poignancy of his love poetry, but he first came to fame as the exotically Celtic poet of a 'new' nationalist Ireland: almost single-handed, he made Irishness culturally fashionable. Spearheading a great cultural renaissance, he moved into his maturity as the voice of his country" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) . It was not merely Yeats, however, who is responsible for arousing Irish patriotism.  The Cuala Press, a small press started by Yeat's sister Elizabeth, is regarded as one of the first publishing houses to bring attention to Irish literature, art and music.  Her production of Broadsidesis no different. "The glory that once was Ireland and could again be Ireland was the fire that burned unquenched in the mind and will of Elizabeth Corbett Yeats" (Colby Library Quarterly) . Dublin: Cuala Press, 1935. Small folio, original cloth backed boards with paper label to upper cover. Complete with what is almost certainly the original plain unlettered dust jacket (we can find no other examples of the jacket, but this is comparable to other jackets for Cuala Press books). Book remarkably bright and clean with only a couple of tiny spots to cloth. A few chips to dust jacket. Housed in vibrant red custom box. An VERY RARE AND NEARLY PERFECT COPY of a book of large cultural importance with dazzlingly fresh illustrations.

The Box of Delights or When the Wolves were Running.

William Heinemann, London 1935 - First Edition (first printing) of Masefield's seminal children's classic. 8vo. 418pp. Blue cloth, lettered in gold at spine and upper board with the publisher's motif blind-stamped to rear board. With splendid colour endpapers by Masefield's daughter, Judith, replicating the dust wrapper design, plus a series of chapter header and tail illustrations. A penny-sized area of staining to the top edge and just a trace of fading to the backstrip. Very good indeed in the fugitive dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but with some tanning to the spine panel, a touch of occasional light spotting and soiling and several slivers of loss from the spine ends. The sequel to Masefield's 1927 novel 'The Midnight Folk' continuing the adventures of Kay Harker. This volume is considerably more uncommon than its predecessor, and elusive indeed with the dust wrapper. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Girl Campers" [story in] Woman's World, July 1935

Woman's World Publishing, Mount Morris, Illinois 1935 - Magazine. 26pp. Stapled wrappers. Light general wear at the edges and with the typical subscription stamp in the upper left corner, very good. Highsmith's first published work, at the age of 14, a series of letters written to her mother and stepfather from a camp for girls when she was only 12, accompanied by four of her cartoons. The letters contain many of the comments one would expect from a young girl along with several intriguing comments predicting her brief comic book career ("bring the Sunday funny papers if you come."); her sexuality ("We are going swimming 'Diana' tonight . Diana means without any clothes on at all. Do you think it's all right to go in Diana?"); and her future in publishing ("There is a girl here named Janet Armstrong that I want you to meet. She lives in Tudor City and her father is a publisher."). A remarkable piece of juvenilia from this notable American writer best known for Strangers on a Train and her series of Tom Ripley crime novels.

A collection of 327 sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 2.75" x 3.75" and 9.75" x 7.5". Very good plus with rubbing and small tears, lacking some photographs. An album compiled by New York native, Ruth Haley beginning during her childhood through her graduation from Saint Lawrence University. The images show the family posing in front of the farm house and various other locations in upstate New York as well as of farm animals and the rustic landscape of the country. During her time at Saint Lawrence University she attended an event with Madame Curie who is pictured here walking on campus in two photographs with Owen D. Young and another of her planting a tree. Numerous pictures of the campus and female students are shown here including Haley's graduation. At the university she studied education and went on to Syracuse University for her masters, eventually becoming the Latin teacher at Northville high school in Fulton County where she also directed girls' basketball and field hockey.       "4°: pi1 A-E 4 F 2 chi1 G-L 4 M1 2chi1 N-R 4 S 2 (-S2) 3chi1 T-Z 4 2A 2 4ch1 2 2A1, gepag.: [2] 1-44 [2] 45-85 [3] 87-128 [2] 129-172 [2] 169-170 pp. Later karton, vierde brief zonder omslag. Lit.: Ter Horst, 'Mr. Franciscus Lievens Kersteman.

Valiant Is the Word for Carrie

Reynal and Hitchcock, New York 1935 - First edition. Gilt spine lettering a bit rubbed, else fine in a lovely, fine dustwrapper with a couple of tiny tears. Arguably a "dedication copy," Inscribed by the author: "Dear Williams: 'To Friends' the dedication page says. You are one of the best any man could have. Barry B. 10/28/35." Benefield, although little known today, was cited by the great short story anthologist Edward J. O'Brien as one of the four finest short story writers of the 1920s, along with Ernest Hemingway, Sherwood Anderson, and Manuel Komroff. Benefield adapted this comedic novel from his own short story, and the novel became the basis for the 1936 film with Harry Carey, Gabby Hayes, and Gladys George, who was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in her debut film.         THE CARRETA.

London:: Chatto & Windus. (1935).. First UK edition. Originally published in Germany in 1931 as DER KARREN. Translated from the German by Basil Creighton. (Although the very mysterious Traven claimed the English versions came first, nearly all his books were first published in Germany.) THE CARRETA is the first of his "Jungle" or "Mahagony" novels, a series of six books published in the 1930's that focus on the rebellion among indigenous Mexicans forced to work clearing mahogany in labor camps in the jungle leading to the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution. Bluish gray cloth lettered in gilt on spine; top edge gray; tipped-in frontis photograph of workers making camp. Tiny crimp to one corner, thin streak of fading to spine, still near fine in first-issue dust jacket priced "7s6d" (there was a cheap edition issued with price clipped and "3/6 net" added in red). The jacket has some shallow chipping and shows age and some darkening on spine but is still good to very good and quite scarce. .
