Franklin Roosevelt, as President ALS to his son, signed twice from the San Diego Naval base!

San Diego, California, October 2, 1935. 6.5" x 3.5". "Single page ALS on lightly lined paper, 5"" x 8"". Dated ""Oct 2"", and signed by Franklin Roosevelt as ""Pa"" within the letter. Accompanied by the signed and autographed envelope, 6.5"" x 3.5"", stamped and postmarked ""Oct 2 / 1935"", and signed in full by Roosevelt to his son as ""Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr"". The letter has expected folds and both the letter and envelope have light scattered small stains. We know from history that on October 2, 1935, the date of this letter, FDR embarked on the USS Houston at 1500 and left immediately to review the Fleet tactical exercises. He was accompanied by Adm Joseph M Rieves, U.S.N. Commander-in-Chief. The overall importance of this naval base cannot be overstated.Only 20 years earlier, in 1912 the US saw a Strategic value to station warships in the harbor of San Diego, and by 1919 Congress approved a plan for a naval training station, a naval hospital, a naval repair base and a fleet landing in San Diego. Although still concerned about the bay's shallow waters and narrow channel, the Navy began transferring destroyers to San Diego because of concern about Japan's expansionism. By 1922, The Navy formally creates the U.S. Destroyer Base San Diego while pushing the city to dredge more of the bay to allow for larger ships. Ultimately this base became significant in the participation of the attack on Pearl Harbor as FDR, in 1940, shifted most U.S. warships from this strategic base to Pearl Harbor.Today the San Diego naval base is one of the largest bases of the United States Navy and is the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet, consisting of 50 ships and over 120 tenant commands.Roosevelts fascinating ALS to his son the day of embarking on the USS Houston was signed by him using his affectionate and personal reference of ""Pa"" and is shown below:""San Diego / Oct 2Dearest Brud I shall miss you much on the grand old Houston - We go aboard in a few hours - there the Fleet exercises, thru Southward. Take care of yourself If you can come to H.P. for Sunday Nov 3 it would be grand.Just so much love fromYour dearestPa""A unique and rare personal ALS from President Roosevelt to his son from a location which was just years later to hold major significance for the US during WWII."

[Two Autograph Letters, Signed, to Sylvia Lynd]

Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, and 5 Raymond Buildings, Gray's Inn, 1935. 4 pages, in ink, on two octavo lettersheets with letterheads (one in blind). Folded for mailing, very good. Sir Edward Marsh, translator, politician and patron of poets, writes to author, Sylvia Lynd, on business matters: "I have given your letter to the P.M.'s P.S. for the Civil List Pensions ... who was very encouraging, & wd like you to send him a note on Miss Mayne & her circumstances to 10 Downing St. ... I can hardly imagine any one who wd be a better 'case' for the Civil List ... tho' the sums are terribly small! I have no say in the matter myself ...." In the second letter, he writes "... I've just got such an unhappy letter from my great friend Lady Lytton, who writes in deep distress about the desire of the Book Society to leave out 'Viscount Knebworth' from the title of Lytton's book. She says 'It was Antony's name, & his name shd be recorded: it is nothing to be ashamed of. He was 'Antony' to his & our friends, but 'Lord K' to the public. ... I am sure that if the Committee understood how much we care & feel about it they would leave it in ... My own opinion is neither here nor there, & no doubt there are strong reasons for the omission; but I hope you'll agree I am bound to pass on what she says. -- I'm also writing to ... E. Blunden ...."

Collection of 1 autograph manuscript signed ("Beatrix Potter") and 1 autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis"). Together with: The Peter Rabbit Music Books. Book I. Six Easy Pieces for Pianoforte by Christopher Le Fleming.

London, J. & W. Chester, Frederick Warne & Co., 1935. - 17, (3) pp. Publisher's original full-colour illustrated wrappers; a line drawing by Potter at the head of each song. ALS: Castle Cottage, Sawry, Ambleside, 18 Aug. 1935. Large 4to. 1 p. AMsS: n. p., [December 1935]. 8vo. 1 p. Charming archive documenting this slim volume of music and the final stage of an extraordinary career. Beatrix Potter was 69 years old when she undertook this joint project, for which Le Fleming composed the music and she herself contributed illustrations and a brief foreword. The original manuscript of the latter, containing several autograph corrections, is preserved here: "The rippling melody of this pretty music calls back many little friends. Again the Puddle-Ducks pass: pit pat paddle pat; white kittens, squirrels, rabbits, frisk and gambol. Tiddly widdly widdly! Mrs. Tittlemouse with a mop follows the big dirty footprints of Mr. Jackson. And Lucie sips her tea, while dear Mrs. Tiggy heats her smoothing iron. Good luck to the merry company of Christopher Le Fleming's tuneful numbers, and to those luckly little People who will learn to play them some day! [.]". Also included is an unpublished letter by Potter to the composer, in which she complains of tremors in her hand: "I too have been away for a very brief holiday and more than ever busy since coming home - I sent 2 or 3 samples to Messrs Warne as I am not sure about size and style of drawing for lithography - I have not had a reply - it is just as likely that Mr. Stephens [Arthur L., Managing Director of Warne] is away from London. I shall go on in the mean time drawing when ever I can. I am quite keen on the work and do not reject it - but my hand does shake [.] I had nice kittens from Elizabeth + her mother. You shall have the drawings to look at". Some weeks later, on 13 September, Potter wrote to Le Fleming: "I have been very long over [the drawings] - doing them at odd times in a busy season of the year. Some are better or worse than others. The frog and the nut-cracking squirrel are my own favorites, and Jemima with Mr. Tod. The ducks are least satisfactory - I am having another try at Pit Pat Puddle. The tune still hums" (Linder). Curiously, Potter thought the music beyond the ability of youngsters. She wrote to a friend, "I am sending you Christopher Le Fleming's music. It was very charming when he played it but I think it is too difficult for children." - Holograph Potter manuscripts are of exceptional rarity. Quimby, Appendix IV, C7. Cf.         Japanese Color Plate Propaganda Album

1935 - Bright, vivid and fantastical illustrations from Japanese folklore, Samurai legend, martial and equine traditions, and other patriotic-tinged stories. Showa 10, or 1935. Oblong, 18 by 38 cm. 60 color plates, with text captions generally in a narrow column on one side. The imagery jumps off the page, with not a few of the illustrations having the illusion of real dimensionality. The color adds to the electricity of the scenes depicted. A few of the plates have crayon scribbles or writing. The cloth on the boards is heavily soiled, and the string tie binding has some looseness, as might be expected from the extreme oblong shape.         Cupid's Pastime.

      - 13 original copper engravings, 2 of which are signed by the artist, including a complete set of the artist's proofs for the 6 plates used in the published book. The collection includes 4 printings of the frontispiece, 2 versions of which are unused. The collection includes several page proofs, comprising 3 of the full page engravings, 2 impressions of the tail piece on different paper and two more sheets without engravings. All the proofs have the stamp of the artist's studio on the verso. Printed by A.A.M. Stols for J.B.W. Editions. 1935. An unique collection, all the more desirable as the book itself only existed in an edtion of 31 copies. Buckland Wright wrote in the colophon that the book was "a private experiment in illustration and typography by the engraver of the plates, who offers no other excuse of this publication". These are delicately sensuous copper engravings of nude figures in Arcadian landscapes with an underlying gentle erotic theme. In his memoir, Anthony Reid wrote : These were the themes which he loved best and which he best portrayed. The plates have timeless beauty, an absolute serenity of line and loveliness'. Reid A19, p.17. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A Study of Tom Thomson. The Story of a Man Who Looked for Beauty and for Truth in the Wilderness

Toronto: Discus Press, 1935. Undetermined. very good. 131 out of 450 copies set by hand by the author and printed on Kelsey press. xxii, 133pp. Octavo. Green cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Text block is generally very clean and bright. Bottom and side outer edges untrimmed. A few B/W illustrations within. Four tipped in colour plate reproductions, including frontis. Slight crease to frontis page. A nice copy. very good Signed and numbered in black ink by the author in the limitation page. Canadian author Blowden Davies moved to Toronto in 1921 where she met with the GROUP of SEVEN, a group of artists renowned for their post-impressionist styled portrayals of Canadian landscapes. Her interest in Canada's artistic community grew leading to the authorship of this book. Davies' texts are well known for exploring Canadian social history. Blodwen Davies was a prolific writer, publishing works including: Storied Streets of Quebec (1927), Old Father Forest (1930), Daniel Du Lhut (1930), Ruffles and Rapiers (1930), Saguenay and Gaspe (1932), Romantic Quebec (1932), the Charm of Ottawa (1932), Youth, Marriage and the Family (1948), Quebec: Portrait of a Province (1952) and Ottawa: Portrait of a Capital (1954). The majority of Davies' work was historical, but in the years leading up to her death she developed an interest in folklore and mennonite history in Canada. It seems there are two varients of the book, the first has a limitation page of 100 copies and this example where the page has been reset with a limitation of 450 copies. There is no indication of why this was done as the books are identical. 1935
