Complete with appendices and index. In publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt crossed scimitar motif to upper board. Top edge brown, others untrimmed. In typographic dust-jacket.         American Big Game Fishing.

New York: The Derrydale Press,, 1935. By Mrs. Oliver C. Grinnell. Francis H. Low, Herman P. Gray, Charles L. Lehmann, Lynn Bogue Hunt, Ernest Hemingway, Van Campen Heilner, George C. Thomas, III, David M. Newell, Otto J. Scheer, Francis H. Geer, S. Kip Farrington Jr., Thomas G. F. Aitken. Illustrated by Lynn Bogue Hunt and from Photographs, Drawings and Maps. Large octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front cover gilt, decorative maritime frame, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, illustrated blue endpapers. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, 118 illustrations, decorative chapter headings and 11 maps. Slight rubbing to extremities, light fading to foot of front and rear boards, short closed tear to fore edge of half-title; an excellent copy. First edition, first printing, one of 850 trade copies. With ten inscriptions by contributors to Ned Schaffer; including an inscription and small doodle by Hemingway at the head of his chapter, Marlin off Cuba, "To Ned Shafer [sic] with best regards, 6/5 Ernest Hemingway". Ned Schaffer was a New York stock broker and well known big game hunter and fisher, who kept a summer house for fishing in New Jersey. These inscriptions are likely to have been done at a gathering in Bimini, an island in the Bahamas used by big game fishers as a base for blue-fin tuna and giant marlin fishing. Hemingway, with his three sons, and a number of renowned big game fishers are known to have been visiting that summer; the world record for Blue Marlin was set there in July by Helen Lerner. Schaffer was primarily involved in tuna fishing, although that summer he appears to have been in Bimini for the marlins, his inscription from S. Kip Farrington Jr. reading, "Here's hoping that Ned will soon hang a Brownbill and Blue Marlin that will match his Tuna". He kept regular correspondence with Thomas Aitken, who was also a correspondent Hemingway's, whose inscription reads, "To Ned Shafer a game guy with big fish, "Tommy" Aitken". Schaffer competed in a number of fishing tournaments, including Maine's Second Annual Tuna Fishing Tournament 30 July 1947 at which he was reported missing overnight due to his radio battery expiring. He died aged 49 in 1952. This work was released as Volume Four of the Derry Library of Sports and is a typically attractive Derrydale production; "Eugene Virginius Connett, 3rd, the founder and principal owner of Derrydale, editor of this work, was a publishing genius ... Connett sought out the most respected outdoor writers of his day and convinced them to become Derrydale authors. He combined their words with the output of equally well regarded artists and illustrators whose drawings, paintings, and etchings were beautifully reproduced on the fine Italian paper that Connett favoured. Today these books and prints are the most valuable and most collectible sporting books and prints ever published in North America." (Jed Lyons, president of the press in his preface to James Cummins Catalogue 113, The Derrydale Press). A further 56 deluxe copies of this work were issued, with 100 copies bearing the Hutchinson imprint sent to England. Just two other Hemingway presentation copies have been traced at auction, both of the deluxe issue and inscribed Hemingway in addition to Lynn Bogue Hunt's signature, which all the deluxe issues bear. None have been traced which can compare to the number of inscriptions from key names in big game fishing found here, a full transcript of which is available upon request.

Porgy and Bess was Gershwin's magnum opus, nourished by more than a decade of technical study and a longheld interest in African-American experience. Attracted to ragtime as a teenage pianist, borrowing blues vocabulary for songs as early as 1920 and identified publicly as a 'jazz' composer from the time of the Rhapsody in Blue (1924), Gershwin held a substantial stake in black American music long before the day in autumn 1926 when he happened upon Heyward's novel. He responded to his reading of Porgy as if to the voice of destiny. Though his earlier experience with through-composed music drama had been limited to Blue Monday (1922), a 20-minute opera 'à la Afro-American' written for a Broadway revue, Porgy fired him with the vision of a full-length opera, and he wrote to Heyward immediately to propose a collaboration. Though the project took nine years to complete, Gershwin's intuition was on the mark." Richard Crawford in Grove Music Online. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Seven Pillars of Wisdom

One of the seminal works of 20th-century military history detailing Thomas Edward Lawrence's experiences in the Middle East before, during and just after the First World War mostly involving the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks in 1916. The author's story was made into a bio-pic film starring Peter O'Toole called "Lawrence of Arabia", the name he is often known by. Please read ALL of the following before emailing me with questions. More than likely, the answer is here! Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T. E. Lawrence (Thomas Edward Lawrence a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia; not to be confused with D. H. Lawrence) Hardcover First Trade Edition - First Printing - First State Jonathan Cape UK 1935. Quarto, measuring 11"x8" (28x20cm) Red-purple boards clothed in a tan-colored original dust jacket (often missing). 672 pages. Printed price of "30s. net" (30 shillings) on the lower inside of the front dust jacket flap. Contains 54 plate illustrations, including many portraits, and 4 maps. First State Error: Illustration on pp. 304-305 listed incorrectly as pp. 302-303 on p. 20 of the Illustrations index. (Later state and later printing copies correct the error.) First trade edition issued to the public, second complete edition, and third edition overall. Of the first print-run, there was a numbered state (up to 750 copies) and an unnumbered state, this being one of the unnumbered copies. The only difference between the two is the numbered state has a slipcase and limitation page; numbered copies tend to be priced at $2500+. See edition notes below.Small Bonus: Includes a postcard printed by Jonathan Cape concerning a free copy of "Now and Then", which appears to be a periodical from the 1930's. Collation: ffep, half-title, full title page, colophon, dedication, Introduction/Synopsis 7-18, Illustrations index 19-20, Preface by A.W. Lawrence (his brother?) 21-26; Main Text 27-661, Appendices 662-666, 667-672.Condition: Just about Fine in Very Good++ Dust Jacket (almost near fine). A beautiful copy of one of the seminal works of 20th-century military history. Book itself is just about fine, clean pages, slight tenderness to corners, expected for a book over 80 years old. Former owner book plate on front paste down. Pages are generally quite clean and bright. Original dust jacket is present and accounted for, about 99.99% all there. Just slight fraying to the upper spine and a 3/4" slit down upper left-hand edge near the spine, some rubbing to the spine at the words "complete and unabridged" else an excellent example. Edition notes: Seven Pillars of Wisdom was first published privately in 1926 in an edition of 170 copies issued only to family and friends. A single copy is available at this writing for about $100,000. Apparently, Lawrence did not intend the text of his accounts in the Middle East during the First World War to be available to the public at large, at least not until after his death. However, at the urging of friends, Lawrence allowed Jonathan Cape to issue an abridged version of his accounts titled Revolt in the Desert. Upon Lawrence's death in 1935, Cape issued Seven Pillars of Wisdom, his complete account of his experiences in the Middle East in the first trade edition available to the public, the edition being offered here in its first printing. This trade edition was issued in two states, a numbered state limited to 750 copies with slipcase (usually priced at $2500+) and an unnumbered state for the rest. This is one of the unnumbered copies. It sold well over 100,000 copies in multiple printings by the end of the year. Winston Churchill asserted "It ranks with the greatest books written in the English language." Pillars is regarded as one of the seminal works of primary source military prose.NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale.         Green Hills of Africa.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1935 - First edition of Hemingway's second work of nonfiction, an account of a month on safari he and his wife took in East Africa during December 1933. Octavo, bound in full dark green morocco, gilt titles and ruling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. Green Hills of Africa was published in 1935, but initially appeared in Scribners Magazine the same year (Meyers, 1985). The first edition explains that Hemingway "attempted to write an absolutely true book to see whether the shape of a country and the pattern of a month's action can, if truly presented, compete with a work of the imagination." The author's intentions were quickly confirmed when the first print-run sold a popular 10,500 copies, and it was aptly praised by The New York Times as "[a] fine book on death in the African afternoon. The writing is the thing; that way he has of getting down with beautiful precision the exact way things look, smell, taste, feel, sound." Not unlike Hemingway's virtuosic abilities, Green Hills of Africa also offers the writer's opinions on the value of his contemporaries: "The good American writers are Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Mark Twain Henry James wanted to make money. He never did, of course." Hemingway adds that most American writers are inadequate and "came to a bad end" The value of Green Hills of Africa, therefore, is three-fold. It serves as masterly written entertainment, a successful social experiment that tested the receptivity of the American public, and an insight into the author's literary evaluation. The Observer is correct when it wrote, "If he were never to write again, his name would live as long as the English language, for Green Hills of Africa takes its place beside his other works on that small shelf in our libraries which we reserve for the classics."         ALS - Eigenhändiger Brief mit Unterschrift.

Wien, 1.I.1935, 3 Seiten kl.-4, mit eigenhändig adressiertem Umschlag. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
