Gattorno. With 38 reproductions and a few critical opinions.

Havana: Ucar, Garcia Y Cia, 1935 - Quarto (254 x 192 mm). Recent green cloth, gilt titles to spine on red morocco label. With the original front wrapper bound in. Closed tear to top edge of front wrapper with creases to extremities, a little dampstaining affecting edges of preliminaries and first few pages, small loss to colophon leaf, illustrations and text clean. A very good copy of a fragile publication. Text in two columns in English and Spanish. Lithograph portrait and 37 lithographic illustrations by Gattorno. First edition, sole printing, number 442 of 460 copies of this scarce Hemingway publication championing the art of Antonio Gattorno (1904-1980). Presentation copy inscribed by the artist to Juan Jose Sicre: "Para J. J. Sicre, su amigo, Gattorno, Santa Amalia 15/6/1935". Juan José Sicre (1898-1974) was a Cuban sculptor and painter who, along with Gattorno, introduced a distinctly European style of modern art to Cuba. Having both studied in Europe in the 1920s, Gattorno and Sicre fell under the influence of artists such as Picasso and, particularly for Gattorno, Paul Gauguin, whose rural primitivism helped develop an interest in the rural poor and an increased sense of nationalism. On returning to Cuba Sicre became the professor of sculpture at the Academy of San Alejandro and contributed to the avant garde magazine Revista de Avance in order to establish a new form of Cuban national identity in the arts. Through this sense of national pride, Sicre became "the most famous Cuban sculptor of his time" (Bethell, p. 413). It is likely that Gattorno met Hemingway as early as 1929 when Gattorno was living in France as part of El Grupo de Montparnasse, a contingent of Spanish and Latin American artists and writers who embodied the European modern art movement of the 1920s. Through the influence of these writers Gattorno's art changed conspicuously, with Sicre expressing concern that Gattonro had become all "too modern" by embracing a European romantic conception of Cuban national identity. But, as Hemingway notes in his foreword to this edition, Gattorno had undergone a transformation from "a Cuban painter" into "a painter for the world [.]. Now it is time for him to leave [Cuba] again but he will always return to it where he is painting". Hemingway's patronage of Gattorno extended far beyond the foreword to this monograph. Hemingway "was well aware of the magnetic effect his name might have on such a publication" and sent two copies of the book to the editor of US magazine Esquire, Arnold Gingrich, encouraging him to publish eight full-colour reproductions of Gattorno's work in the 1936 edition (Baker, p. 264). Within a year Gattorno was invited to hold a solo exhibition in New York, paving the way for Gattorno's success in 1937 when he was commissioned by the Bacardi Company to paint a mural in their offices in the Empire State Building.         Photo Album]: Rural Scenes in Maine and New Hampshire

Bicknell Mfg. Co, Portland, Me 1935 - Oblong octavo. String-tied flexible card covers with printed label of Bicknell Mfg. Co. of Portland, Maine, along with "Eustis. Chain of Ponds" in ink on the front cover. 52 leaves, each with a single gelatin silver photograph on the verso only. Each image is approximately 6" x 4". Each image is numbered, only a couple are captioned. Old repairs on the covers, chipping on covers and edges of the leaves, one leaf detached and trimmed, thus externally good plus, but internally very good or better with modest fading on a few images. The album depicts mostly rural scenes in Maine including Chain of Ponds and Eustis, and of the Dead River in New Hampshire. The images are dominated by pastoral scenes, a few of farm houses, and a few of monuments. J. Carleton Bicknell, who lost his right arm at age seven, was one of Maine's most accomplished photographers, founding his company in 1902 as the Bicknell Photo Company. Presumably these were master images used by Bicknell as part of his portfolio or as samples to peddle postcards or to offer for use in souvenir brochures. The images are beautifully composed, with most of them rising to the level of art in their composition and execution. Bicknell apparently specialized in hand-painted images; these are uncolored. Apparently a trove of Bicknell material was sold in 2005, from whence, we can only speculate, this album came. An uncommonly accomplished album by a notable Maine photographer.

        The Principles of Quantum Mechanics.

Oxford at the Clarendon Press., 1935. Second edition, mostly rewritten, and with an extra chapter on field theory. Octavo. pp xii, 300. Although we cannot vouch for it this is widely held to be one the classics of modern physics. Dirac shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1933 with Erwin Schrödinger "for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory". The creator of the "Dirac Equation", he was considered something of an oddball with a precise and taciturn nature. His colleagues in Cambridge jokingly defined a unit of a "dirac", which was one word per hour. When Niels Bohr complained that he did not know how to finish a sentence in a scientific article he was writing, Dirac replied, "I was taught at school never to start a sentence without knowing the end of it."Small contemporary (1915) ownership signature on front pastedown. Bottom corner of rear cover a bit bumped. Very good indeed. No dustwrapper.

USSR Architecture [and] Construction of Moscow].

Moskva - 1938 1935 - USSR Architecture (Organ Soyuza sovetskikh arkhitektorov, Moskva, 1936-37): 21 issues (1936: issues No3 - 12; 1937: issues No1 - 11), complete with all ll., original wrappers; occasional spotting and soiling, some occasional light mold, heavier to last 15 ll. of issue 9 for 1937, margins and spines of wrappers slightly chipped. Construction of Moscow (Mossovet, Moskva, 1935-38): No6 and 17-18 for 1935; No4-8, 10-12 and 22 for 1936; No6, 12, 22 for 1937 and No16 for 1938, most issues with plates, including some folding, original wrappers; some light marginal waterstaining in several issues, light soiling. A collection of issues of the two famous Soviet architectural periodicals that together provide an insight into the unique marriage of the architectural aspirations and ideology of the Stalin's epoch. The "USSR architecture" was an illustrated monthly periodical that was published from 1933 until 1992 with some interruptions. It included overviews of the domestic architecture, building projects as well as articles on European and American architecture. The tone of reviews obeys a strict ideological framework. Articles about projects by Soviet architects are impregnated with pompous praise, whereas many of those reviewing architecture abroad overuse such notions as "battle", "controversy of capitalism" and "crises". One of the most interesting projects that is featured in three issues offered here (No7 for the year 1936, No 5 for 1937 and No11 for 1937) is the famous USSR pavilion at the International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life held in Paris in 1937. Designed by the B.M. Iofan the building was lined with Samarkand marble. The entrance to the pavilion was decorated with bas-reliefs by sculptor I.M. Chaikoff featuring the coats of arms of the USSR and 11 Union republics. The most notable part of the pavilion was the 24-meter sculptural group "A Worker and a Collective Farm Girl", made of stainless steel after a design by Vera Mukhina, which symbolised the achievements of the socialist industrialisation. The other periodical "The Construction of Moscow" was founded in 1923 and often featured stellar avant-garde designs by Gustav Klutsis, Vasilii Elkin, and El Lissitzky. It ran through the 1930s, but progressively became less and less modernist in terms of both form and content as time went on. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Black Tents of Arabia (My Life Among the Bedouins).

London, Hutchinson, [1935]. 8vo. Original black cloth, lettered in white (remainder binding); pp. 280, 24, (advertisements); numerous illustrations from photographs, one folding table of named horses; cloth a little marked and with lettering of spine partially lost, else a very good copy. Scarce first edition of a major work discussing Arab horses and camels, among ethnographic observations. A minor incident had resulted in the author becoming a blood brother of Amir Fuaz, a member of the Ruala Bedouins, one of the largest Bedouin tribes. His experiences during numerous visits to the tribe in the years following the First World War are recounted in the present work. Inhabiting the region of northern Arabia, the Ruala prove to be fierce hosts, and Raswan records instances of skirmishes between marauding bands, alongside enjoyment of pursuits such as falconry. The majority of plates depict horses and camels, at work and rest and being cared for. The table lists Arabian Horses of "known" ('asil') descent in both Arabic and English transliteration. Carl Reinhard Raswan (1893-1966), born Carl Reinhard Schmidt was the scholar of Arabian bloodlines, he also published the Raswan Index, an extensive compilation of Arabian horse pedigrees and strain information. He advocated tolerance and understanding of Bedouin ways of life and culture in Arabia. Raswan's life in Arabia and the US is definitely worth a full-length biography.

        Seven Pillars of Wisdom

One of the seminal works of 20th-century military history detailing Thomas Edward Lawrence's experiences in the Middle East before, during and just after the First World War mostly involving the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks in 1916. The author's story was made into a bio-pic film starring Peter O'Toole called "Lawrence of Arabia", the name he is often known by. Please read ALL of the following before emailing me with questions. More than likely, the answer is here! Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T. E. Lawrence (Thomas Edward Lawrence a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia; not to be confused with D. H. Lawrence) Hardcover First Trade Edition - First Printing - First StateJonathan Cape UK 1935. Red-purple boards clothed in a tan-colored dust jacket (often missing). 672 pages. Printed price of "30s. net" (30 shillings) on the lower inside of the front dust jacket flap. Contains 54 plate illustrations, including many portraits, and 4 maps. Illustration on pp. 304-305 listed incorrectly as pp. 302-303 on p. 20 of the Illustrations index. (Later state and later printing copies correct the error.) First trade edition issued to the public, second complete edition, and third edition overall. See edition notes below.Condition: Just about Fine in Very Good++ Dust Jacket(almost near fine). A beautiful copy of one of the seminal works of 20th-century military history. Book itself is just about fine, clean pages, slight tenderness to corners, expected for a book over 80 years old. Former owner book plate on front paste down. Pages are generally quite clean and bright. Original dust jacket is present and accounted for, about 99.99% all there. Just slight fraying to the upper spine and a 3/4" slit down upper left-hand edge near the spine, some rubbing to the spine at the words "complete and unabridged" else an excellent example. Edition notes: Seven Pillars of Wisdomwas first published privately in 1926 in an edition of 170 copies issued only to family and friends. A single copy is available at this writing for about $100,000. Apparently, Lawrence did not intend the text of his accounts in the Middle East during the First World War to be available to the public at large, at least not until after his death. However, at the urging of friends, Lawrence allowed Jonathan Cape to issue an abridged version of his accounts titled Revolt in the Desert. Upon Lawrence's death in 1935, Cape issued Seven Pillars of Wisdom, his complete account of his experiences in the Middle East in the first trade edition available to the public, the edition being offered here in its first printing. It sold well over 100,000 copies in multiple printings by the end of the year. Winston Churchill asserted "It ranks with the greatest books written in the English language." Pillars is regarded as one of the seminal works of primary source military prose.NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. Roth was a prolific, New York based importer of erotica and banned literature, arrested for distributing censored materials several times between the 1920s and 1950s. A Supreme Court ruling in his 1957 case, Roth vs. The United States, provided an important ruling on obscenity. This book consisting of six short, erotic Japanophile tales involving American G.I.'s abroad: "Introduction," "The Paradise of Love," "The Juggler and the Nuns," "The Merchant Istoguyo," "A Royal Bridal Night," "The Hour of the Tiger." Rare, undoubtedly due to their seizure. No copies in OCLC as of December 2015. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Roma. Fontana dell’esedra.
