AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his son

Roseburg, OR, 25 June 1935. Folds from mailing, still about Fine, with envelope. A fine two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED as "Dad" to his son Romer on colorful Zane Grey Camp stationery with envelope. In part: "I've been gone 10 days, and have received only one wire from home. No letters! Pyramid Lake was the bunk. It's all right for big shots who are dumb, but not for me. There were some peachy divorcees there.... We trolled for hours - for nothing.... You should always be sure of your ground before you steer anyone up against anything.... We are here in camp, and it's lovely.... No fish yet. The river is about 18 inches high, and sure is hell. There are a few steelhead coming up, so we hear. But I haven't seen any.... By July 15 fishing should be good.

Game-Used Polo Ball signed by Walt Disney with family provenance ñ Disneyís cartoon ìMickeyís Polo Teamî was in production at the time the polo ball was signed

Polo Ball Signed ìWalt Disney,î ìJack Holt,î and ìSnowy Baker.î White wooden ball, 3î diameter ñ about the size of a baseball. Lightly soiled. The chipping on the ball occurred before it was signed indicating it is a game-used polo ball, probably hit by Disney! Purchased by University Archives from Tom Donaldson who states that this is ìa polo ball that my father had signed in 1935 by Walt Disney, Jack Holt and Snowy BakerÃ?î On August 14, 1934, the annual midsummer list of polo handicaps was announced in New York. Ten goals was the highest rating. The ìLos Angeles Timesî reported, ìThe motion-picture colony in California, becoming more and more interested in polo, is represented in the list of changes by Will Rogers and his son, Will, Jr., both advanced two to three goals. Walt Disney, creator of Mickey Mouse, is listed at one goal instead of the beginnerís rating of zero Ã? Other changes included Ã? (Snowy) Baker, Rivera Country Club, 0 to 2Ã?î From MousePlanet.com: ì[Will] Rogers was a huge proponent of the sport of polo, especially during the 1920s and 1930s, and it was on the polo fields of Hollywood where he met and became friends with Walt Disney Ã? Walt had sent some of his top Disney animators Ã? to Rogers' Santa Monica ranch to sketch him in action. Walt was ,,, planning on using Rogers in caricature form in a short cartoon titled ëMickeyís Polo Teamí (1936). Unfortunately, Rogers died tragically in an plane accident in August 1935, resulting in his caricature being removed from the short cartoonÃ?î The storyline of ìMickeyís Polo Team,î an eight minute short, involved a polo game between Disney characters Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, The Goof (Goofy), and the Big Bad Wolf and Hollywood stars Charlie Chaplin, Harpo Marx, Stan Laurel, and Oliver Hardy. Stars in the stands included Clark Gable, Shirley Temple, and W.C. Fields. The referee is western star Jack Holt. Australian boxing Olympian Reginald ìSnowyî Baker was active in Hollywood teaching polo to a number of film stars. Disney had a studio polo team which would play against other teams, some from other studios. The ìOakland Tribuneî headlined a 1933 wire story on its sports page ìWalt Disney Leads / Poloists to Victory.î Datelined ìLos Angeles Dec 25 ñ (UP) Walt Disney engineered his polo team to a 5 to 2 victory over the Los Amigos four and Snowy Baker led his Pirates to an 8-6 triumph over ëBig Boyí Williamsí Greyhounds in a brace of polo matches at the Rivera field here yesterday.î

Original Leaves from the First Four Folios of the Plays of William Shakespeare, 1623, 1632, 1663, 1685 [Leaf Book with Four Original Leaves] [Proof Copy Signed by David Magee]

San Francisco: Printed by the Grabhorn Press for David Magee 1935, edition limited to 73 copies. () [30]. Near fine. Folio. Original quarter red morocco and marbled boards. Raised bands. Black spine label with gilt titles. Shelfwear to boards and rubbing to spine, else a fine copy. The original leaves are mounted at the rear of the book immediately following a facsimile title page from each of the Four Folios. Condition of the leaves is as follows: First Folio: wear and age toning, mostly to margins, with one small piece missing that has been archivally repaired. The repairs do not touch the text or ruling. Second Folio, fine antiquarian condition with only light age-toning. Third Folio; Some age toning and spotting. The foredge margin has been trimmed, not touching text or ruling. Fourth Folio: Fine antiquarian condition, with only the faintest of toning. As attested to by penciled notes on the ffep and colophon from David Magee, this is an out of series proof copy and the first copy of the book to be bound. The First Folio leaf is laid in loosely, the remaining are tipped in. Proof copy signed by David Magee. A stunning production from the Grabhorn Press and fitting home for leaves from four of the most coveted books in the English Language. The leaf book offered here contains a leaf from each of Shakespeare's four folios, including his most celebrated plays. The First Folio example is the title page from the Merchant of Venice (PP 163 -164). The Second Folio leaf is pages 215-216 from the Life of King Henry the Eight. The Third Folio leaf is pages 649-650 from the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, including dialog between the two fated lovers, and the leaf from the Fourth Folio is pages 198-199 from the Life and Death of Richard the Third. A wonderful production, one of the scarcest from the Grabhorn Press, containing leaves from the first Four Folios of some of Shakespeare's most enduring works (Disbound and Dispersed 67).
