        Mars Mountain

1935. Book. Very Good. No Binding. Original pen and ink drawing on paper for the cover art (and frontispiece) for the first edition of MARS MOUNTAIN by Eugene George Key. The work is titled "Dorothy Marie Nelson." MARS MOUNTAIN is considered to be the first science fiction specialty press book. Published by Fantasy Pubs. in Everett, Pennsylvania, in 1935. Chalker & Owings state on page 165 of THE SCIENCE-FANTASY PUBLISHERS: "...right here, that everything starts -- the first attempt by any publisher anywhere to produce commercially viable publications devoted exclusively to fantasy and science fiction." So this is the original cover art for the first science fiction specialty press book. Science fiction art does not get any more historically important than this. The work shows a few creases and some soiling otherwise very good, in a fine black wooden frame with a silver bead and a white linen mat with a black fillet, under UV protective glass. Image size: 6 3/4 inches x 7 3/4 inches. Frame size: 18 1/4 inches x 19 1/4 inches..

        Untitled Fantasy Landscape Original Art

Unpublished Book. Near Fine. No Binding. Signed by Illustrator(s). Untitled fantasy landscape art, depicting a man riding a giant mouse along the shore of a lake which is surrounded by rocky hills, at twilight. Bok would often incorporate a drawing of a mouse with his signature. This dark landscape with a man (Bok himself?) riding a mouse into the twilight must have had deep personal significance for the artist. This work shows the heavy influence that Maxfield Parrish had on Bok, especially on his early work. This maginficent color piece looks like it may be egg tempera on board. It certainly has the luminosity of a work by Parrish. SIGNED along bottom edge, "Hans Bok / 1935." Image size: approximately 29 1/4 X 19 1/4 inches. Frame size: approximately 34 X 24 inches. The board shows wrinkling and restoration work, still one of the most impressive and large Bok original paintings we have seen. In a fine gilt frame..

Real French Capers / Circa 1935. American "Good Girl" Pin-up pulp soft Erotica

Uncredited, No Location 1935 - No Location / No Credited Publisher. Circa 1935; volume 1, no. 20, with no year given. Pulp "Good Girl" light erotica piece, with a classic "Good Girl" pin-up type illustration by Reginald Greenwood on the cover. 8.5" x 6.5", 48 pp., pictorial wrappers. In absolutely striking condition for a piece from this genre and era; some rubbing and small wear at some points on the spine, micro-edgewear, and light marginal toning of the pulp-paper contents. Very clean, very bright. The Greenwood cover - most of the limited records available on him credit him as a comic artist, and it is quite possible that anything under that name was done pseudonymously - is a "Good Girl" rarity (see scan), as is the piece in general. Contents include a black & white nude photographic section and a number of b&w "good girl" line drawings as illustrations of the several included pieces of soft-erotica pulp fiction. These illustrations were clearly by a number of different artists, all in "Good Girl" interpretations, and all uncredited. A fascinating and extraordinarily rare piece from a uniquely American pulp genre, in rather spectacular condition. Purchaser must be over 18 years of age, please, due to the nude photographic section (though it is actually rather soft by today's standards). LBB-G [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

What Are You Going To Do About Alf?

(Paris): (Lecram Servant). [1935]. A small, early volume by Miller, self-published with money he earned from Tropic of Cancer. Shifreen & Jackson A10a. "By Henry Miller" has been penned on the first blank, according to the bibliographers by the author himself. Shifreen & Jackson's comment on the first and second editions: "Miller's name is signed in The First Edition but printed in [the] Second." There is no printed author name in this volume. Slight surface soiling; very near fine in stapled wrappers. Approximately 3-3/4" x 5". Because of its size and fragility, one of the scarcest Miller "A" items. The last copy to appear at auction was in 1996. First Edition. Softcover.

The 39 Steps (Original Pressbook for the 1935 film)

Gaumont, London 1935 - Original pressbook, American issue with American ads distributed in New York by the Gaumont Picture Corporation of America for the classic 1935 film, based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan. Card wrappers with a color lithograph design, saddle stitched, 12" x 18". 20pp. Faint horizontal fold as issued. Some minute nicking at the edges, pages slightly toned, but bright and very near fine. *The 39 Steps* is often considered Hitchcock's first masterpiece in a career noted for several. His adaptation of Buchan's novel proved (as usual) to be an improvement on the source material, adding two female characters and removing a couple of serious implausibilities. Another aspect of inestimable importance is that Hitchcock found in this film a theme that would become his favorite: an innocent man on the run, clever and resourceful, but surrounded by a conspiracy neither he nor the audience understands. A rare and blazingly beautiful artifact from one of the foundational espionage thrillers of the 20th Century. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

An impressively well-preserved copy in pale blue cloth covered boards, dark blue cloth spine label, top edge stained dark grey, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, in a gorgeous Fine dustwrapper, designed by Stuyvesant van Veen, which, aside from a couple of invisible scratches, and mild toning of the spine panel, is virtually as new, and extremely rare thus. 599pp. Roth's early first novel is a tour-de-force of Modernist prose, set in the teeming New York tenements--a fitting counterpart to Stieglitz's The Steerage. A book which was nearly forgotten for a generation, before being rediscovered and honored for the work of genius it is. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        North to the Orient

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company,, 1935. With Maps by Charles A. Lindbergh. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine and plane design to upper board in silver, map endpapers, top edge stained blue. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece, map headpieces. Spine rolled. A superb copy in the jacket that is very lightly rubbed and nicked at the extremities. First edition, first printing. Inscribed on the half-title by both Charles and Anne Lindbergh, "For Doctor Albert H. Ebeling from Charles A. Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh – 1935". The recipient was a long-time colleague of Alexis Carrel, Lindbergh's collaborator and co-author of the book "The Culture of Organs". Lindbergh and Carrel worked together to create the "perfusion pump", which would allow living organs to exist outside the body during surgery. It was Carrel's idea of "genetic superiority" in certain human strains that caused controversy and accusations of anti-Semitism against Lindbergh.

Cocteau, Jean. Hand Written Letter from Cocteau, dated April 1935. The letter concerns a letter from Madame Mendes, wife of Catulle Mendes, creator of "La Revue Fantasiste". The couple were prominent in the 1930's french artistic scene and their daughters were painted by Renoir. Addressed to "Mon Cher Ami", he states he is returning a letter from Mme. Mendes without opening it. He states he wrote the article with love and respect, and if it contains inaccuracies, it's that he tries to paint fast and through all sorts of fog. The ensemble is correct. He also states that when he knew Mendes, he was no longer living at home, and spoke of his wife without sweetness. He says he liked and admired her, and he does not change. Signed Jean Cocteau, with the characteristic 5 pointed star below. COCTEAU, JEAN (1889-1963). French poet, novelist, playwright, visual artist, and film director. Considered one of the most creative, diversified artists of the twentieth century.

        Design in Art and Industry

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935 - Inscribed by the author and famous New York architect (1884-1972) on the flyleaf, to his wife, Beatrice [Sulzberger] Kahn: "To Beatrice - a fine design "Ely Kahn" A unique association copy of an important - and very personal - book on design, by one of New York's City's most influential architects. The origin of Kahn's book is told in the extensive chapter on his career in Steern, Gilmartin, and Mellins' NEW YORK 1930: ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS (NY, Rizzoli, pp. 550-563): "In 1933, with unemployment among designers so universal that the American Institute of Architects pondered whether to recommend the closing of art and architecture schools, Kahn argued . for a return to craft as a method for solving unemployment. He obtained a grant from the Carnegie Foundation to travvel around the world investigating the artist's role in society . much of his time was spent in the Far East in a last fling with exoticism . "Kahn's report on his trip [was] a book called DESIGN IN ART AND INDUSTRY; its exoticism, its picturesque local color, its concern with the individual craftsman and the handing down of vernacular traditions from father to son - all of these seemed irrelevant in a world that had turned its attention to encouraging the utmost efficiency and standardization in industry." First edition. Small 4to. Illustrated. 204 pp. Original blue cloth. Rebacked, preserving original spine. Two preliminary leaves chipped at outer margin. Very scarce.         Document (DS) Signed with Clear Ink Autograph Signatures by Both George V and The Future Edward VIII and Dated 3rd June 1935 At A Time When Their Relationship Was Under Particular Strain Due to Edward’s Burgeoning Affair With Wallis Simpson. A Rare Item.

      - DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Issued at the Court of St James, the document appoints James Irvine Hatfeild Friend Esquire MC to be an Additional Officer of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire. The document is signed in fountain pen ink at the top by George V (signing as ‘George RI’) and by the future Edward VIII (signing ‘Edward P’ as Prince of Wales) at the base. As well as bringing the signatures of the monarch and his heir together in one place, the date on which the document was signed (3rd June 1935) is also of particular significance being a time when the relationship between the two was under great strain and just 6 months before Edward’s accession to the throne and the extraordinary events that would follow. Similarly, the document also bears a blindstamped seal reading ‘For God and Empire’ - words that would prove particularly ironic and prophetic. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: For some time, George V had been troubled by Edward’s many affairs with married women and his reluctance to settle down. Reluctant to see him inherit the Crown, the King was quoted as saying, ‘After I am dead, the boy will ruin himself in 12 months’. Similarly, he is reported to have said, ‘I pray to God that my eldest son will never marry and have children and that nothing will come between Bertie (i.e. his second son Prince Albert) and Lilibet (i.e. Albert’s daughter the then Princess Elizabeth) and the throne.’ Prince Edward’s relationship with his father was further weakened by his relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Although the King and Queen met her at Buckingham Palace in 1935, they later refused to receive her again. Thus this document is signed at a particularly difficult time in the relationship between George V and Edward and just months before the momentous events that would follow. Six months later, George V died and Edward ascended to the throne and became Edward VIII on 20th January 1936. The relationship between Edward and Mrs Simpson flourished and in November of that year, he summoned Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin to Buckingham Palace and announced that he wished to marry Wallis Simpson. However, Baldwin advised him that would be impossible owing to the opposition there would be from the Church of England and the Dominions of the Empire to the King marrying a divorcee. Not wishing to give up marriage to Mrs Simpson, Edward was forced to abdicate the throne on 10th December 1936, broadcasting his decision to the nation in a radio broadcast on the following day saying, ‘I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.’ Prince Albert reluctantly assumed the throne to become George VI and his daughter Princess Elizabeth subsequently became the current Queen on his death in 1952. With unnerving foresight, George V’s predictions and wishes thus came true. A rare document from a time of immense crisis for the British monarchy. DETAILED CONDITION REPORT : 1pp 39 cm x 32 cm.         First Publication of Raymond Chandler's Story "Killer in the Rain" in: Black Mask, January 1935

London: The Atlas Publishing and Distributing Co.; Ltd., 1935 - First Edition, First Printing. London: The Atlas Publishing and Distributing Co.; Ltd., 1935. Vol. XIII, No. 4. A very fine copy of the UK edition with only the slightest of browning of the paper. Covers in gorgeous condition. Apart from the different numbering of this volume, contents and pagination are almost the same as the New York edition. However, since there are significantly fewer (and different) advertisements, two stories - Capt. George F. Shearwood's "And Death Passed By" and Ellsworth Braun's "A Boa Glides In" - were added to fill the 128 pages. Other than Chandler's "A complete novelette", contents include the Editor's "The Jury System And Justice" - Frederick Nebel's "He Was A Swell Guy" - Erle Stanley Gardner's "Winged Lead" - George Harmon Coxe's "Murder Picture" - Roger Torrey's "Beginner's Luck" - George Alden Edson's "Hot Lead" - Sergeant George W. Schattle's "A Fool For Luck". In addition there are the two features "What Do You Know" and "In February". The Ur-Big Sleep features a nameless detective who is hired to get a dame off the hands of some pornographers and blackmailers. Violets M'Gee is introduced and the idea that it never rains in southern California put to rest. "A roughneck comes into big money, but it's only dough to him and bullets mean nothing when he fights for the girl he tries to protect."
