        North to the Orient

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company,, 1935. With maps by Charles A. Lindbergh. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine and plane design to front cover, all in silver, top edge dark blue, map endpapers. With the dust jacket, housed in a custom blue buckram chemise and dark blue full morocco pull-off case. Portrait frontispiece, map panels above chapter headings. Tips bumped and slightly worn, a couple of light damp patches to cloth, internally fine; an excellent copy in the creased and nicked jacket, that has a couple of shallow chips to extremities. First edition, first issue. Presentation copy, inscribed by the Lindberghs on the title page to the psychoanalyst and writer Claude Delay, "For Mlle Claude Delay, with best wishes, Anne Morrow Linbergh, Charles A. Lindbergh." Delay was a close friend of Coco Chanel, and wrote her biography, Chanel Solitaire. The Lindberghs led a peripatetic life when on the ground, with homes in France, England, New Jersey, Michigan, Connecticut, Switzerland and Hawaii. The book has the requisite issue points of "Abacadabra" on p. 11, line 11, and no reviews of the book on the rear flap of the jacket. An account of the Lindberghs' flight from Long Island to Nanking by the Great Circle Route via Canada, Siberia, and Japan. The trip was made in Tingmissartoq - Greenland Inuit for "one who flies like a big bird" - a Lockheed Sirius, a plane originally developed by Jack Northrop and Gerard Vultee to meet Charles Linbergh's requirements for a low-winged, high-performance monoplane, in this case retrofitted as a float-plane. Includes an account of the Lindberghs' services bringing aid on the Yangtze to the victims of the Central China Floods of 1931, one of the deadliest natural disasters of the twentieth century. Tingmissartoq is now in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

        The Secret People

London. Newnes. 1935, 1935. First Edition. 8vo. Dark blue pebble grain cloth with gilt titling to spine. The pebble grained cloth would appear to be a variant (unless it is the same cloth as the elusive Ferret Fantasy copy, although that is described as vertically ribbed blue cloth; the fact that we differentiate between details to this degree is in some way an explanation as to why you never see rare book dealers dating supermodels or movie stars... or indeed out in daylight...or even dating). Not only is this copy near fine in previously unknown blue cloth, but it is also clad in a splendid example of its fabulously scarce dustjacket; bright, clean, fresh and unfaded with a 2cm closed tear to the front spine hinge and a 1cm wound to the lower-mid spine panel, coupled with some slight cosmetic edgewear. Altogether a lovely and extremely rare object. This is Beynon-better-known-as-Wyndham's first novel; a lost race extravaganza set in (oddly enough) 1964, with a suitably prescient touch Queen Elizabeth the Second sits upon the throne of England (she wasn't in line for succession in 1935), our hero is flying his 'strato-plane' across the Sahara with a feisty redhead and her cat...there's a crash, there are decadent underground pygmies (obviously!), giant mushrooms, the feisty redhead is worshiped as a goddess, oh, and Italy is planning to flood the Sahara in order to turn it into an inland sea. All in all it makes genetically engineered man eating plants seem tame by comparison.

In Licht und Sonne. 3. Folge. Unsere Kinder.

..."         Inaccuracies about Lindbergh's 1927 flight to Mexico in the Spirit of St. Louis, where he first met his future wife, Anne Morrow, prompt Lindbergh to pen an explanatory letter to the author

Englewood, New Jersey, April 23, 1935. 18" X 14" Framed. "Autograph Letter Signed, ?Charles A. Lindbergh?, 1 page, 5.25"" X 7.25"" visible, Englewood, N.J., April 23, 1935, on personal stationery, to British author, Harold Nicolson, concerning some errors Nicolson made in a book describing Lindbergh?s trip to Mexico in the Spirit of St. Louis, matted and framed with an image of Lindbergh standing next to the plane, to a finished size of 18"" by 14"". Light soiling and the usual folds, overall in apparent near fine condition. In full: ?Dear Mr. Nicholson: / I hope you will excuse my taking the liberty of making a few notations in the pages of your book dealing with my flight to Mexico in the Spirit of St. Louis. They are in regard only to facts of which I have personal and definite knowledge./ With best regards / Charles A. Lindbergh [signed]?. Charles Lindbergh is most famous for his successful trans-Atlantic flight to secure the Orteig Prize for flying from New York to Paris nonstop. After receiving the Medal of Honor for his journey in 1927, Lindbergh became a national hero, and due to his celebrity status, traveled throughout the U.S. and even to neighboring Mexico. The first time Lindbergh flew over Mexican territory in the ""Spirit of St. Louis"" was September 23rd, 1927, when he flew over Mexicali, Baja California en route from San Diego, CA to Tucson, AZ as a part of Lindbergh's successful tour to promote aeronautics sponsored by The Guggenheim Fund. In 1927, Lindbergh made a nonstop flight between Washington D.C. and Mexico City, his first formal visit. He was invited by Dwight Morrow, the new American Ambassador to Mexico, to do a good will tour. Dwight Morrow and Charles Lindbergh liked each other from the start and became friends throughout the tour. On December 21st, 1927, Anne Morrow, Dwight's daughter, arrived in Mexico to spend Christmas with her family. Anne was introduced to Charles at the US Embassy in Mexico City. In a little more than a year, Anne and Charles Lindbergh would be engaged and soon after, married. Harold Nicolson, British politician and author, published a biography of Charles Lindbergh?s father-in-law Dwight Morrow in 1935, four years after Morrow died. The book was simply entitled ""Dwight Morrow,"" and it is that book Lindbergh annotated and referred to in this letter."

        Tales of Mystery and Imagination

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1935 - Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. First trade edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt, with an illustration to the front board in blind, pictorial black and white endpapers; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with Rackham's illustrations in black, white, and orange, lettered in black and white. Book about fine, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, sturdy binding, former owner's bookplate and some light rippling to the front free endpaper, otherwise bright and fresh interior; price-clipped dust jacket, with minor wear to the extremities, short closed tear to the spine head with some tape repair to the verso, bright and fresh panels. Overall, a near fine and handsome copy. Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a collection of 25 of Poe's short stories. Ranging in themes from the mysterious and fantastical to the macabre and eerie, these stories include many of Poe's best-known works. Specifically, this volume contains "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Mask of the Red Death," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "Eleonora," among others. Additionally, this volume contains 29 illustrations by Arthur Rackham, comprised of 12 color plates and 17 black and white illustrations. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was a prolific British artist and illustrator, best known for his deluxe editions of popular children's books. Artistically inclined since childhood, Rackham started out illustrating for newspapers, but it was not until he began drawing for children's literature that he received critical acclaim. In response to his burgeoning fame, Rackham's publisher, William Heinemann, began producing deluxe and trade editions of his illustrated works, the first being Rip Van Winkle in 1905. Deluxe editions were produced in a limited edition of numbered copies (ranging in quantity from 250 - 2,020), bound in vellum bindings, printed on handmade paper, and signed by the illustrator. The trade editions were published concurrently in simple bindings, on thinner paper, and with fewer color plates. This publication strategy benefited both publisher and artist; Rackham produced about one book per year and would have an annual gallery exhibition showing his original artwork for his latest book. The recipient of multiple awards for illustrations, Rackham was a diverse artist with a talent for both the fantastical and the intricacies of human nature, as demonstrated in his famous illustrations for Peter Pan.         Onchi Koshiro Shibun-shu^ KISETSU-HYO^

1935. ONCHI Koshiro. Onchi Koshiro Shibun-shu KISETSU-HYO. Tokyo: Aoi- Shobo. Showa 10 [1935]. This copy is #50 of only 50 deluxe copies from a total edition of 200. 3 full-page color illustrations by Onchi. Folio, 36 x 31 cm, printed on very heavy paper, bound in gilt-printed Japanese paper over boards. Besides the illustrations, Onchi wrote the poems in this collection and was responsible for the book's design. The text reproduces his calligraphy. The book is signed by Onchi and contains a photogravure portrait of him. Interestingly, it is rendered a unique copy by the fact that Onchi further presented the book to a "Saito^-shi" and wrote a poem dated January 1936 on the signature page. This is the deluxe and only complete edition of this work, being bound in hard covers and having all three illustrations Onchi designed for it. Since the printer never intended for these deluxe copies to be read, each of the first 50 copies of the 200 that comprise the fukan (supplementary) edition, which was printed on kyokushi (Japanese vellum) paper with only one of the Onchi's color prints and issued in a portfolio, originally accompanied the correspondingly numbered copy of the deluxe issue as a "reading copy" - though our copy has parted ways with its fukan companion. It is a tour de force of bookmanship, and the most elusive of Onchi's productions. Here in near perfect condition and with the Onchi poem brushed by him inside. [See Onchi, HON NO BIJUTSU, p 110].

        Seven Pillars of Wisdom

London: Jonathan Cape Ltd., 1935. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the British first trade edition, first printing in dust jacket, a superior copy for collectors. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to famously lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and entitled "Revolt in the Desert". It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public in the form of a British first trade edition. Winston Churchill was among Lawrence's original subscribers to the 1926 edition, though Lawrence refused to allow Churchill to pay for his copy, as a token for his esteem for the work he and Churchill had done together in the Colonial Office after the First World War. Of this text, Winston Churchill wrote: "It ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English language. If Lawrence had never done anything except write this book as a mere work of the imagination his fame would last... But it is fact, not fiction... An epic, a prodigy, a tale of torment, and in the heart of it - A Man." Here is the first British trade edition, first printing, a near fine copy in a dust jacket that approaches near fine. The binding remains square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright gilt. We note only trivial wear to extremities and some minor scuffing. The contents are notably clean and bright, with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Even the untrimmed fore and bottom edges remain bright and clean, with no age-toning or soiling. The brown top edge stain is unfaded. The first printing dust jacket is complete, with no losses and retaining the original front flap price. We note minor soiling and modest wear to extremities with a few tiny closed tears, but no chipping and no spine toning. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
