Collection of 1 autograph manuscript signed ("Beatrix Potter") and 1 autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis"). Together with: The Peter Rabbit Music Books. Book I. Six Easy Pieces for Pianoforte by Christopher Le Fleming.

London, J. & W. Chester, Frederick Warne & Co., 1935.. 17, (3) pp. Publisher's original full-colour illustrated wrappers; a line drawing by Potter at the head of each song. ALS: Castle Cottage, Sawry, Ambleside, 18 Aug. 1935. Large 4to. 1 p. AMsS: n. p., [December 1935]. 8vo. 1 p.. Charming minor archive documenting this slim volume of music and the final stage of an extraordinary career. Beatrix Potter was 69 years old when she undertook this joint project, for which Le Fleming composed the music and she herself contributed illustrations and a brief foreword. The original manuscript of the latter, containing several autograph corrections, is preserved here: "The rippling melody of this pretty music calls back many little friends. Again the Puddle-Ducks pass: pit pat paddle pat; white kittens, squirrels, rabbits, frisk and gambol. Tiddly widdly widdly! Mrs. Tittlemouse with a mop follows the big dirty footprints of Mr. Jackson. And Lucie sips her tea, while dear Mrs. Tiggy heats her smoothing iron. Good luck to the merry company of Christopher Le Fleming's tuneful numbers, and to those luckly little People who will learn to play them some day! [...]". Also included is an unpublished letter by Potter to the composer, in which she complains of tremors in her hand: "I too have been away for a very brief holiday and more than ever busy since coming home - I sent 2 or 3 samples to Messrs Warne as I am not sure about size and style of drawing for lithography - I have not had a reply - it is just as likely that Mr. Stephens [Arthur L., Managing Director of Warne] is away from London. I shall go on in the mean time drawing when ever I can. I am quite keen on the work and do not reject it - but my hand does shake [...] I had nice kittens from Elizabeth + her mother. You shall have the drawings to look at". Some weeks later, on 13 September, Potter wrote to Le Fleming: "I have been very long over [the drawings] - doing them at odd times in a busy season of the year. Some are better or worse than others. The frog and the nut-cracking squirrel are my own favorites, and Jemima with Mr. Tod... The ducks are least satisfactory - I am having another try at Pit Pat Puddle. The tune still hums" (Linder). Curiously, Potter thought the music beyond the ability of youngsters. She wrote to a friend, "I am sending you Christopher Le Fleming's music. It was very charming when he played it but I think it is too difficult for children." - Holograph Potter manuscripts are of exceptional rarity. - Quimby, Appendix IV, C7. Cf. Linder, A History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter, pp. 288-89.

        Ulysses

1935. MATISSE, Henri. Ulysses. By James Joyce. [xvii], 363, [3] pp. Illustrated with 6 soft-ground etchings and 20 reproductions hors texte on papers of different colour and size by Henri Matisse. Folio, 298 x 230 mm, bound in publisher's brown cloth, in a new quarter brown morocco and matching cloth folding box. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. |~||~||~||~||~| Limited to 1500 copies signed by Matisse. The Matisse Ulysses, designed by George Macy for members of The Limited Editions Club, is the most famous book from the LEC list. "The text of this edition was based on that of the Odyssey Press edition, second impression, and is therefore the most accurate text of Ulysses that has been published in the United States" (Slocum and Cahoon). It is interesting to note that Matisse chose to illustrate the Homeric subtext of Joyce's story rather than the novel's Dublin setting. Matisse found that Joyce's text was too difficult to translate visually, and so sought to capture the book's spirit instead. This, he felt, was best conveyed by classical images in shades of grey. Matisse also decided to include his preparatory drawings for the six etchings, reproduced on coloured papers, to add heft and colour to the book. The present volume is also one of the very few American livres de peintres issued before WWII. The Limited Editions Club Ulysses includes the only prints of Matisse published in America, and represent Matisse's only use of soft-ground etching. Signed by Matisse on the colophon. Duthuit 6. Spine ends gently nudged, else Fine.         Ladies in the Parlor

New York: Greenberg: Publisher. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1935). 2nd printing. Hardcover. [very nice copy, tight and clean with minimal shelfwear; jacket shows light rubbing/soiling, one shallow chip at bottom of front panel, minor wear at base of spine, small sticker-shadow and a couple of tiny stains at upper right-hand corner of front panel, slight spine fade]. Tully's novel of a small-town girl who escapes small-town poverty (and various abusive and sexually aggressive men) by going to work for Madame Rosenbloom in her high-class (and politically well-connected) Chicago brothel. It's been stated that the book's scarcity is due to its having been "banned" -- it was declared obscene by a New York court, which fined the publisher $50 -- which makes it a bit of a surprise to see "Second Printing" stated at the top of the front jacket flap. (The book itself bears no edition statement.) .

Seven Pillars Of Wisdom. ( A Triumph)

London, Jonathan Cape. 1935., 1935. LIMITED ISSUE of the FIRST EDITION, published for general circulation (originally published privately in 1926). No.486 of 750 copies. Illustrated with three manuscript facsimiles and forty-seven plates including four in colour. Four folding maps. One-quarter pigskin over brown buckram with crossed swords in gilt to front panel, titled in gilt to backstrip, patterned endpapers, top edge gilt. Some minor wear/scuffing to spine ends else a near fine copy, with the accompanying plain paper wrapper (worn). 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph' is the autobiographical account of the experiences of T. E. Lawrence ('Lawrence of Arabia') while serving as a liaison officer with rebel forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks of 1916 to 1918. This monumental work had been privately printed in 1922, and a 1926 self-financed subscriber's edition had left Lawrence facing bankruptcy, so author vowed "No further issue of the Seven Pillars will be made in my lifetime". This first trade issue therefore followed in 1935, within weeks of the motorcyle accident that so tragically and prematurely claimed the life of one of the greatest visionary heroes of modern times.         De knyttede haender. Roman. Paa dansk ved E. Grünbaum.

Köpenhamn; Nyt Nordisk Forlag / Arnold Busck, 1935. Originalets titel: De knutna händerna (Stockholm, 1930). 20,5x15 cm. 304 s.

[Photograph Album of Japanese Domestic and Cultural Life]

np [Japan?], nd [ca. 1935]. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong 4to. double string-tied commercial album, silk brocade bound, 9" x 12". Containing 60 4.5" x 6" silver gelatin prints mounted to heavy gilt-edges card-stock, one to a page both recto and verso. Printed captions in English additionally mounted below each photo. Near fine or better with only touches of wear to extremities. Quite well-preserved. A handsome and rather lavish production by an unknown (but likely professional) photographer, possibly as presentation for special occasion or visit from foreign dignitary/delegation. Undated, but clearly pre-war, and based on internal evidence ca. 1935-1940. A broad range of scenes from Japanese domestic and cultural life are included: cormorant fishing, the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Kabuki and Noh theater, Sumo and other sports (kendo, archery, battledore, shuttlecock), festivals, musicians, rice and tea harvesting, as well as scenes of shrines, temples, cherry blossoms, and gardens. A.S. Byatt, in her introduction to the 1976 Penguin edition, stated she had been reading the novel since the age of ten.Bowen is generally acknowledged as an important twentieth-century English (and Anglo-Irish) writer.'The House in Paris' was written during a period of great activity (she published four novels and a short story collection in the 1930s,besides writing literary reviews), and received positive reviews.Early Bowen titles are very scarce to find in any condition. This is a superb copy and certainly the nicest copy we have ever encountered.

Map of Mexico City and Valley

Mexico.: Frances Toor Studios.. 1935.. Color pictographic / pictorial street map, 19 3/4 x 25 inches on sheet size 20 1/2 x 26 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Light wear to folds, tears to mid right map now visible only on close examination. Brightly colored pictorial map designed by the Guatemalan artist Carlos Merida (1891-1984) showing a street plan of central Mexico City with pictographs of many buildings and a numbered "Business Directory" of 21 places in the cartouche, referencing numbers on the map. A note under the map states that "the motifs of the border consist of Aztec and colonial symbols of the names of suburban places." At the lower centre of the map is an inset map of the valley surrounding Mexico City. A wonderful example of the "translation" of the twentieth century decorative map that MacDonald Gill pioneered, here with a Hispanic sensibility. .

        A Primer of Chess

London: G. Bell & Sons, Ltd.,, 1935. Octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with examples of chess moves. Jacket with a few nicks, chips and light creasing. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "J. R. Capablanca, Margate, April 24 1936" - this would have been signed at the Margate chess tournament of 1936, where Capablanca placed second by half a point (played 9, won 5, lost 4). Copies with the dust jacket are scarce. Copies that have passed though the hands of the great Cuban Grandmaster and signed by him are distinctly rare.         USSR IN CONSTRUCTION (SSSR NA STROIKE) A MONTHLY ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE: 1935, NUMBER 11

(USSR IN CONSTRUCTION). Pyatakov, G.L, Editor in Chief. USSR IN CONSTRUCTION (SSSR NA STROIKE) A MONTHLY ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE: 1935, NUMBER 11. Moscow: The State Publishing House of Graphic Arts, 1935. First Edition. Folio. Stapled Printed Wrappers. Propaganda Periodical. Near Fine. np (44pp), profusely illustrated in monochrome gravure. Designed by Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. Text in English. "USSR in Construction (SSSR na Stroike)" was published monthly in five separate languages (Russian, English, German, French and Spanish) from 1930 to 1941, and again briefly in 1949. Conceived in the wake of the first Five Year Plan, the graphically striking journal was meant to promote the image of Russia at home and abroad as an agriculturally and industrially sophisticated nation. Its first issue announced "The rapid growth of Socialist construction in the Soviet Union is evoking great interest in foreign countries. The State Publishing House of the RSFSR has therefore conceived the idea to publish a special illustrated magazine "The USSR in Construction" reflecting the colossal construction now taking place in the Soviet Union. The State Publishing House has chosen the photo as a method to illustrate socialist construction, for the photo speaks much more convincingly in many cases than even the most brilliantly written article". Its editorial board included Maxim Gorky, Mikhail Kholtsov, and Editor in Chief G. Piatakov. Employing many talented Soviet photographers, artists and graphic designers (including El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko, Gustav Klutsis, Valentina Kulagina, and Varvara Stepanova), it set a new standard for industrial photography and Constructivist photomontage in the service of Stalinist propaganda. This English language version of the eleventh installment for 1935 (The Eighteenth Year of the Revolution!) is devoted to "The Fifteenth Anniversary of Kazakhstan" and features a spectacular design with overlays by Rodchenko and Stepanova utilizing photographs by Eleazar Langman and D. Shulkin, and maps by M. Malyutin. A crisp, beautifully preserved example of this important periodical (cited on pages 226-227 of Horacio Fernandez' "Fotografia Publica: Photography in Print 1919-1939" and throughout pages 143-183 of Robert Lebeck and Bodo Von Dewitz' "Kiosk: A History of Photojournalism") showing just the slightest bit of wear and creasing along the extremities along with the neat stamp of Seattle's Workers Bookshop in ink on the rear cover.         De knyttede haender. Roman. Paa dansk ved E. Grünbaum.

      - Köpenhamn; Nyt Nordisk Forlag / Arnold Busck, 1935. Originalets titel: De knutna händerna (Stockholm, 1930). 20,5x15 cm. 304 s. / Vilhelm" [?To Kristina, my beloved!?]. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973), Swedish journalist, social critic, and one of Sweden?s foremost authors of the 20th century. He was born in Algutsboda in the province of Småland, where his father served as a soldier. Moberg worked in his youth with farming and forestry. After a few years of schooling, he worked as a journalist at different provincial newspapers, in which he also published his first short stories. His breakthrough as an author came in 1927 with the novel ?Raskens. The Story of a Soldier?s Family?, where he depicts the life of the tenant farmers in 19th century Småland. His foremost work, which has been widely translated and is considered one of the finest epic works in Swedish 20th century literature, is ?The Emigrant Novels? (1949-1959). In this tetralogy he describes the Swedish emigration to North America through the story of the farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina. Moberg was politically engaged and always fought for individual rights, and for the abolition of the monarchy and the State Church of Sweden. He intervened in affairs of corrupt legal practice and published the bestselling book ?Why I am a Republican? (1955). His political views were inspired by his visits to USA and by the Swiss constitution. Moberg had a love affair with a woman named Kristina, whose name he used for the main character Kristina from Duvemåla of ?The Emigrant Novels? This love affair has remained unknown for over half a century, until a collection of his novels, all inscribed by Moberg to Kristina [Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005)], appeared on the market. Judging from the tone in the inscriptions, the relation between Moberg and Kristina was initially intimate and loving, and gradually devolving into affection. In the early inscriptions from the 1940s Moberg writes, for instance: ?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved!?, and in the play ?Chastity? he writes: ?Vilhelm Moberg?s chastity ? what is left of it is hereby dedicated to Kristina? The later in-scriptions from the 1960s contain phrases like: ?with a devout greeting? and ?from her affectionate Vilhelm? In the copy of ?The Emigrants? (?Utvandrarna?, 1949) Moberg writes: ?To Kristina, my be loved, who has lent her name to the female main character in this book, with gratitude and love from The Author.? In the last inscription, in the pocket edition of ?The Emigrant Novels? from 1969, he returns to the fact that she has given her name to Kristina from Duvemåla, which shows that the thought of her had occupied his mind during all these years, and it is also a sign of her probable influence on his writing from 1945 onwards. What further strengthens this opinion is the copy of ?Our Unborn Son?, a play from 1945, which deals with the issue of abortion. This is the only one of these books that has been bestowed with a fine leather binding, with a pocket at end of the volume where Kristina has collected newspaper cuttings on the book and its author, suggesting that the theme of this novel was essential to her. The book was translated into Danish in 1947, and in the collection there is a copy of the Danish edition which has been inscribed to Kristina by the translator thus: ?? This book, which is partly about you?? [Attributes: Hard Cover]
