        Burmese Days.

London: Victor Gollancz,, 1935. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine in green. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine cocked, light spotting to prelims, endmatter, and edges, occasional spotting to text block. A very good copy in a lightly toned jacket with slightly nicked and creased extremities, and few closed tears repaired with tape to verso. First UK edition (first published in the US in the previous year), first impression, of Orwell's second book and first novel. Orwell's book, the result of five years' service as a police officer in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma 1922-7, was initially rejected by Gollancz amid concerns that this caustic critique of colonialism might be considered libellous to those portrayed, so it was first published further afield in America. On its first publication in the UK, as here (with names changed to avoid libel cases), the novel was well received, at least among the literati, with Cyril Connolly reviewing it in the New Statesman as "an admirable novel. It is a crisp, fierce, and almost boisterous attack on the Anglo-Indian. The author loves Burma, he goes to great length to describe the vices of the Burmese and the horror of the climate, but he loves it, and nothing can palliate for him, the presence of a handful of inefficient complacent public school types who make their living there... I liked it and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a spate of efficient indignation, graphic description, excellent narrative, excitement, and irony tempered with vitriol.

        Seven Pillars of Wisdom

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.,, 1935. A Triumph. Large octavo. Original grey-brown buckram, gilt lettered spine, gilt crossed swords device on front cover, reddish-brown top edge. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom made green cloth solander box. Portrait frontispiece, numerous plates (many in colour), 4 maps. Jacket repaired on verso, front panel with small loss at head and tape mark at foot; manilla envelope taped to rear pastedown, containing numerous clippings relating to T. E. Lawrence (ostensibly collected by the recipient and spanning 1935-1962, when she died). A very good copy. Second American Edition, first impression, first state of the jacket; but the first procurable American edition as the first (1926) was published in a tiny edition of just 22 copies (only 10 of which were nominally for sale at $20,000) and was purely to establish copyright. Presentation copy from T. E. Lawrence's youngest brother, A. W. Lawrence, inscribed (on the day following publication) on the front pastedown: "To Hazel D. Hansen, with love and gratitude [Greek quotation from Homer, see below] A.W.L. Cambridge, England. September 28, 1935". The recipient, Hazel D. Hansen (1899-1962), was the distinguished Professor of Classics at Stanford. Arnold Walter Lawrence (1900-1991), archaeologist, was the author of two monograms on Hellenic studies: Later Greek Sculpture (1927) and Greek Architecture (1957). He was also T. E. Lawrence's literary executor, a position which "he performed long and faithfully" (ODNB). Reportedly to pay his brother's inheritance tax, A.W. sold the US copyright of Seyen Pillars (the "subscriber's text") to Doubleday Doran in 1935, resulting in this first US trade edition. At Stanford Hansen studied under, and later collaborated with, the distinguished Professor of Greek Alexander T. Murray. Murray's translation of the Odyssey was first published in 1919 and is still available in the Loeb classics series. T. E. Lawrence, when working on his own translation (published 1932), would certainly have known and consulted Murray's version. Murray translates A.W.'s quote from the Odyssey (Book 11, line 367) as "upon thee is grace of words, and within thee is a heart of wisdom"; these are spoken by King Alcinous of Phaeacia to Ulysses. In the mid 1920s both Hansen and A. W. Lawrence were studying in Athens, she at the American School of Classical Studies, he at the British School; and it most likely there that they would have begun their clearly warm and affectionate acquaintance.

[Photo Album]: Photo Strips Recording Baby's First Years Beginning in 1935

1935 - 1937. Oblong octavo measuring 7" x 10". String-tied brown leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 85 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs, many of which are printed as photo strips, measuring between 1.5" x 1.5" and 4" x 6", with some captions. Album is very good with tiny chips and edgewear with near fine photographs.A collection of photographs documenting the first two years of a child's life beginning at six weeks in 1935. Roughly half of the photos are printed as photo strips and are mounted in the album in their completed form. Many of the other photos are small format prints as well as images that have been separated from their original strips. The photos show the newborn throughout the years of 1935 to 1937, when he is listed as 2 1/2 years old. Throughout the album he is held and pampered by family and friends as he grows into a little boy. The fact that his early years were heavily documented in photo strip prints is unusual as is the volume of this style of prints collected into a single album, especially as the technology and popularity of the strips was relatively new.The first time a photo booth machine was introduced to the public was at the Paris World's fair in 1889. Although it was a success, the concept wouldn't take widespread popularity until 1925 with the invention of the curtain-closed booth we know today by Russian immigrant Anatol Josepho. It was set up on Broadway in New York City and in the first six months saw around 280,000 visitors. A March 1927 headline of The New York Times read: "Slot Photo Device Brings $1,000,000 to Young Inventor."         The Petrified Forest

Scribners, 1935 A very good first edition in a very good dust jacket, signed by all of the cast members in the play (literally, more than 20 signatures), including a young and unknown Humphrey Bogart who created the classic role of Duke Mantee, as well as the famous lead in the play, Leslie Howard. At Howard's insistance, Bogart was hired for the movie version, which launched his career as a "tough guy" movie star, perhaps the greatest male movie star in the history of Hollywood. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

There were some peachy divorcees there. We trolled for hours - for nothing. You should always be sure of your ground before you steer anyone up against anything. We are here in camp, and it's lovely. No fish yet. The river is about 18 inches high, and sure is hell. There are a few steelhead coming up, so we hear. But I haven't seen any. By July 15 fishing should be good."       Barcelona, ohne Verlagsangabe 1935 - unpag. ca. 60 S. kl. 8°. Pergament, gering verzogener Buchdeckel, gutes Ex., SEHR SELTEN Etta Federn-Kohlhaas (* 28. April 1883 in Wien; gest. 9.

Four-Page Autograph Letter Signed [and] Christmas Card with Autograph Note Signed to Katherine Jackson

1935 and 1936. Four page Autograph Letter Signed sent from London on March 29, 1935 with its original mailing envelope [with] a printed Christmas Card with an undated Autograph Note; Both the letter and card are Signed ("Tom Wolfe"), with a third Signature ("Thomas Wolfe") on the return address of the envelope. Folded for mailing, else fine.Katherine Jackson was the daughter of Christian Gauss, the Dean of Princeton College, who was lifelong friend and mentor of F. Scott Fitzgerald. She herself was an accomplished and well-known editor at Scribner's Magazine, working with legendary editor Max Perkins, and later at Harper's Magazine, where she wrote the "Books in Brief" column from 1944 to 1969. The position placed her in contact with many of the most prominent writers and scholars of the day, many of whom she befriended, including Thomas Wolfe. The four-page ALS to Jackson is a heartfelt message composed in London in March of 1935. Wolfe felt isolated from America and he describes a restless night in Paris in which he "was in a bad state" and "could get no sleep [so] I walked the streets all night long until it seemed I had lost the secret of sleep." He explains that he has felt better since arriving in England and that next he's off to Denmark and then Russia. He requests information from the young editor about his forthcoming book Of Time and the River so he can "continue the brawl with Max [Perkins] on more even terms when I come back." He closes by explaining that he has had no news from home but for "two cables and a letter from Max --- but for his sake, and for Scribner's, and for my cure, and because I don't want to disappoint all of you whose generous belief and good wishes mean so much to me -- I hope and pray to God it has gone well." The undated Christmas Card (likely from 1935) has a printed greeting that Wolfe has added to with a note: "Dear Mrs. Jackson: --- I haven't your address with me at present so am leaving this on your desk -- I wish you and all the Jacksons the happiest and the most successful kind of New Year --- Tom Wolfe."The friendship hit a road bump the following year after Jackson told Wolfe that it was not prudent to publish stories in magazines as opposed to books, causing a stir between Wolfe and editor Maxwell Perkins, who later had to smooth Wolfe's ruffled feathers and have a talk with Jackson. The details of this incident are described in a retained carbon copy of letter to her parents from early 1936 that is included here.Wonderful correspondence from Wolfe illustrating his lively working relationship with Max Perkins and Scribner's editors. .
