        Nazi Photograph Album

1935. Cloth. Very Good +. A chilling and yet historically important album documenting the movements of the National Socialist (or Nazi) Party in Germany between 1927 and 1935. The album consists of over 110 photographs or postcards depicting various rallies (in Dresden, Hanover, Munich, etc.) and persons of note during the Nazi regime. Handwritten descriptions in German appear on the leaves next to each image. Roughly 40 of the images are original photograhs (including 1 of Hitler, 1 of Himmler and several of General August von Mackensen). The album is an oblong folio in its ribbon-tied, beige cloth, with an embossed image of helmut and swastika at the front panel. A bit of foxing at the panels. otherwise very clean, with no stray writing or markings to speak of internally. Original webbed tissue-guards between the pages have kept the photographs crisp and well-preserved.

        Historia Universal de la Infamia.

Buenos Aires: Editorial Tor,, 1935. Octavo. Original white wrappers, lettered in black and blue. Spine creased, extremities worn, foxing and toning to wrappers and text block. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. This copy is from the library of Jorge Luis Borges's controversial English-language translator, Norman Thomas di Giovanni (1933–2017), though unmarked as such. Produced in collaboration with Borges, di Giovanni's translations were the first concentrated efforts to translate the majority of Borges's works into English. The working relationship between di Giovanni and Borges was so close that di Giovanni was given a creative credit and a share of the royalities. Many of the short stories in this collection were first published as individual works in the newspaper Criticia between 1933 and 1934. Borges later revised this work in 1954, adding three additional stories: "Un doble de Mohama", "El enemigo generoso", and "Del rigor en la ciencia". Di Giovanni's English-language edition of this work was published in 1972 under the title A Universal History of Infamy.

[THE MAIN MOSCOW ARCHITECTURE MAGAZINE] Stroitel'stvo Moskvy [i.e. Constructing Moscow]

Moscow, 1935. 18 issues. Very good. Tears of the spine (#2/3, 12,9/10, 7/8, 15, 17/18), period shipping label on the back cover (#2/3, 12,5, 9/10,6, 7/8), wrappers slightly rubbed, traces of glued paper (#6, 7/8), loss of a small bit of back cover (#17/18) and tear of the front cover (#15). Full set for 1935 year. Rare. The main magazine on architecture and construction of Moscow told about the successes of Moscow architects and builders, in detail described projects and already built buildings, technical innovations and features of architectural and construction crafts. Ten years after its launch, it boasted numerous photographs of buildings and interiors, sketches of future projects and portraits of figures of architecture and construction, plans for building or reconstruction, maps, as well as colored inserts. Among the most interesting materials in the set: materials on controversial hotel 'Moscow' designed by A. Shchusev (#17/18); factory designed by P.A. Golosov in constructivist style (#16. «...constructivism as a certain art system is completely unacceptable for us. It doesn't satisfy Golosov himself, he moved away from it... But in this design Golosov didn't use constructivism as blind dogma''); the entire issue #2/3 about Moscow metro; second line of metro (#13/14); colossal Moscow-Volga Channel (#9/10); Moscow reconstruction with photographs 'before and after' (#7/8); entire issue about transport and its development (#11); article with photos of Central House of Exile designed by Vesnin brothers (#6, ''It seems that architects should have designed the building using monumental architectural forms. Unfortunately they didn't. Cubism and constructivism are more than they didn't. Cubism and constructivism are more than obvious here''); a few especially interesting photographs of living houses, e.g. House of Mossovet and Dormitory of Police Workers (#1). It's interesting to trace the obvious shift in wrappers, design and contents which magazine suffered in 10 years since its first issue as the architecture of Moscow did as well. It went from striking raw and naked constructivism of 1920s to Stalinist monumentalism and rejection of anything else of 1930s.

Sergey Korolev's signature and corrections on a technical paper ''Specifications of the electric equipment of a glider plane SK-7''

      - 14 of July, 1935. [3] pp. Fine condition. Light tears of the edges. Sergey Korolev (1906-1966) was the Soviet engineer and spacecraft designer who now considered the father of practical astronautics and the founder of the Soviet space program. He led Soviet efforts to build and test the nation's first rockets in the 1930s and was later responsible for building the Vostok capsule used for the first human spaceflight by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961. Korolev is credited with many technological discoveries that became widely used in space exploration and military defence.Like in Germany and United Stated the Russian organizations by the early 1930s were testing liquid-fueled rockets of increasing size. Reaction Propulsion Scientific Research Institute developed a series of rocket-propelled missiles and gliders during the 1930s, culminating in Korolev's RP-318, Russia's first rocket propelled aircraft. It started in 1934 when he developed a project (at that time SK) for so called 'planerlet' (motor glider) - a heavier-than-air aircraft with eight seats and low-power engine without independent takeoff. The idea of creating such an apparatus was based on the growing need of national economy in aircrafts. A planerlet was supposed to combine advantages of a plane and a glider.Korolev was working on his project mostly by himself in the evenings and at nights. He was almost seriosly considering that one doesn't need to sleep every night. With the help of a few other engineers the first construction was soon finished and successfully tested. Later newly developed SK-9 became the basis for Korolev's project of a rocket-powered aircraft.

[Photo Album]: Girl's Album from Walton, New York including the Walton Fire and Flood of 1935

Walton, New York, 1935. Near Fine. Oblong octavo measuring 7" x 9.5". String-tied plastic album with "photographs" on the front board. Contains 121 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 3" and 3.5" x 6" without captions. Near fine photo album with some rubbing on the boards with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a woman from Walton, New York in the 1930s. The album begins with portraits of family members posing around their home and a group photo. After these initial photos there are eight photos from a fire, including aerial shots, which wreaked havoc on the town in 1935. Following the fire the town was ravaged by a flood, seen here in photos. Both scenes of the disasters taking place in the town show rescue workers, fire fighters, and citizens gathered around trying to solve the problems at hand. One photo shows two people looking out from a rooftop as the smoke from the fire billows in the distance. When they weren't fending off disasters the people of Walton enjoyed a bucolic life. The woman who kept the album is seen posing with her girlfriends on the stoop of their house and enjoying the various seasons from snowy winters to bright summers. Some photos show a couple dancing in the backyard as well as numerous photos of young, fashionable women posing and smiling. There are a few photos from a drive featuring girls in hats in a convertible and others from a trip to a cabin on a lake. The lake photos show the women goofing off in swimwear and enjoying the natural beauty around them as well as the camaraderie of close friends. The only two photos with captions are from a trip to Wyoming that feature the Sierra Madre range. An interesting album with nicely composed images of a young woman's life in a small town including documentation of natural disasters.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Mission de Survol des Postes du centre at sud-Annam et liaisons avec troupes des subdivisions de Vinh-Hue, Quang-Ngai, [et] Ban-Me-Thuot

Bach-Mai Airfield, Hanoi, 1935. 41-page quarto typescript variously paginated, full-page hand-colored map of Vietnam, and 67 mounted photographs (approx. 6" x 8½") showing aerial views of the various villages, hamlets, and French outposts in central and south Vietnam, each with a tissue guard; later brown cloth-backed marbled boards, leather label on spine; very good andsound. The text consists of a 2-page "Ordres de Mission," as issued by Le Captaine Buchette-Puyperoux, commandant at Bach-Mai, with his signature in purple ink, and with his "Formations Aeriennes Indochine" stamp; an 11-page "Journal des Marches," March 2-27, 1935 describing in journal form the aerial undertaking, including flight durations and unusual incidents; a 17-page "Compte-Rendus de Mission," by "L'Observateur Adjudant Lombard, signed 5 times in purple ink by Buchette-Puyperoux, each with his "Formations Aeriennes Indochine" stamp; a 5-page "Enregistrement des Vols," noting the various sorties, pilots, passangers, flight times, and locations of the photographs, etc.; a 3-p. account of the "Photographies," essentially captions to the 67 photographs, signed by Buchette-Puyperoux, and with his "Formations Aeriennes Indochine stamp; and a 2-page "Mise en Pages des Photographies." Clearly an official dossier of sorts, not found bibliographically, and likely unique. The last page notes that this is the first such undertaking by the French in Vietnam.

Original poster: Labor Champion Tom Mooney / Free Mooney: a Class War Prisoner 19 Years, July 27, 1935 / Victim of a Monstrous Capitalist Class Frameup / Member of International Molders' Union 33 Years [alt. title: Labor Martyr Immortalized in Prison / Stone Face]

San Francisco: Tom Mooney Molders' Defense Committee, 1935. First Edition. Large fund-raising poster issued by the Committee "for Labor Day, May Day, Working Class and Mooney parades and demonstrations, mass meetings, Unions' halls and Workers' headquarters" (bottom edge of both recto and verso). Left-hand panel of poster verso features anarchist author Lola Ridge's poem about Tom Mooney, first published in The Nation in 1932. Mooney was framed on a murder charge following the San Francisco Preparedness Day Bombing of 1916. Despite the patent mistrial, and decades of advocacy from both moderate and leftist legal activists, Mooney was not pardoned until 1939. Scarce: Berkeley only in OCLC as of September, 2016. Original photo-illustrated broadsheet poster (71x86cm.) printed offset in black on white stock; features two of the most well-known photographic portraits of Mooney on recto and verso. Previous folds, just a hint of foxing, else Very Good or better.
