Mission de Survol des Postes du centre at sud-Annam et liaisons avec troupes des subdivisions de Vinh-Hue, Quang-Ngai, [et] Ban-Me-Thuot

Bach-Mai Airfield, Hanoi, 1935. 41-page quarto typescript variously paginated, full-page hand-colored map of Vietnam, and 67 mounted photographs (approx. 6" x 8½") showing aerial views of the various villages, hamlets, and French outposts in central and south Vietnam, each with a tissue guard; later brown cloth-backed marbled boards, leather label on spine; very good andsound. The text consists of a 2-page "Ordres de Mission," as issued by Le Captaine Buchette-Puyperoux, commandant at Bach-Mai, with his signature in purple ink, and with his "Formations Aeriennes Indochine" stamp; an 11-page "Journal des Marches," March 2-27, 1935 describing in journal form the aerial undertaking, including flight durations and unusual incidents; a 17-page "Compte-Rendus de Mission," by "L'Observateur Adjudant Lombard, signed 5 times in purple ink by Buchette-Puyperoux, each with his "Formations Aeriennes Indochine" stamp; a 5-page "Enregistrement des Vols," noting the various sorties, pilots, passangers, flight times, and locations of the photographs, etc.; a 3-p. account of the "Photographies," essentially captions to the 67 photographs, signed by Buchette-Puyperoux, and with his "Formations Aeriennes Indochine stamp; and a 2-page "Mise en Pages des Photographies." Clearly an official dossier of sorts, not found bibliographically, and likely unique. The last page notes that this is the first such undertaking by the French in Vietnam.

        GILLESPIE'S HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE July 1930 - 1935, 1938.

Gillespie's High School -1938 1935 - Seven volumes of Muriel Spark's annual school magazine. Original brown paper wrappers lettered in burgundy. A very well preserved set indeed, with a central crease to the first volume. Illustrated with photographic reproductions from the school year. An excellent set of school magazines from Muriel Spark's (then Muriel Camberg) alma mater, including some of her earliest appearances in print, and announcements relating to her education and later marriage. The issue for 1930, which publishes five poems, introduces the twelve year old Spark with the preface "It is very seldom that we print more than one contribution from any one author, by the work of Muriel Camberg, aged twelve (2 Sen. A) is so much out of the ordinary that we feel it worth while to give the following five of her poems". The issue for 1931 publishes two poems entitled 'Starshine' and 'Other Worlds' and announces her winning of her form's French prize for the year. It also has an article about 'The Door Of Youth', a pamphlet of poetry by Edinburgh school children, announcing that "our own contributors figure quite prominently, specially noticeable being the first little effusions of young Muriel Camberg, who for number and quality occupies a premier position." The 1932 issue also publishes two poems by Camberg, including a long poem entitled 'Says Beetle', and announces her winning of a scholarship for the following year, entitling a remission of fees. It also announces Spark's second prize in English, Latin and Science, and third prize in Mathematics that year. The issue for 1933 publishes three of Spark's poems - her ability as a poet evidently causing annual exception to the one poem per student custom - including 'Out Of A Book' in recognition of her award of the Heather Club prize on the centenary of Walter Scott's death. It also announces her retention of the scholarship award for the next year, as well as second prizes for English and Science. The 1934 issue publishes a poem entitled 'Dust' and announces Spark's winning of the Sir Walter Scott Club Prize and the Burns Club Prize. The 1935 issue notes Spark's achieving a day school certificate, while the 1938 issue - Spark had by then left the school - announces her marriage to Sydney Spark. Later, in an essay in the New Yorker about the influence of her time at Gillespie's on her work, and particularly on how her teacher Miss Christina Kay was the basis for her later creation Miss Jean Brodie, Spark wrote "My poems in the school magazine were often influenced by Miss Kay's lessons on relativity. One of the library books recommended by her was "The Mysterious Universe," by Sir James Jeans, a famous popular astronomer. I wrote poems about the universe, such as one in which the inhabitants of other planets "Look up to the sky and say / 'The Earth twinkles clearly tonight.' "[from 'The Stars', 1930] Miss Kay predicted my future as a writer in the most emphatic terms." [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Magnificent Obsession

Willett, Clark & Colby - First Edition, First Print. 330 pages. In Very Good plus condition. Pages clean and bright. Spine and binding very solid and straight. A light red top stain that shows a little bit of scuffing. A very light bit of spotting to the inside front hinge and a previous owner's name had been erased from the first free page. Also, a small Bullock's paper sticker to the back endboard. A non-authoral presentation signature to the title page and a 2 1/2 inch tear to the top of the last page of text. The corners are sharp, but there is a rubbing to the top edge near the spine where the green fabric is rubbed off, exposing the cardboard cover. Measures about 3/16ths of an inch. The very rare dust jacket is a little shorter than the book by about 1/4 inch. The book is 8 1/4 inches tall and the jacket is a hair more than 7 7/8. The unclipped jacket shows soiling to the spine and foredges, wear to the corner tips, top and bottom of the spine, with small tears to the unpaginated front cover, and a long fold to the very edge of the inside flap. The color of the jacket is still very vibrant, as is the book itself. Douglas' first novel and the basis for the 1935 movie and the 1954 remake. An exceptional addition for any rare book collection or library. We pack all our books with care and ship in cardboard boxes. We accept all major credit cards and paypal.       Faber and Faber, London. 1935 - Second printing of the second edition. Octavo. 69 pages. From the author's library with his bookplate, designed by John Craxton, on the front pastedown. On the title-page is a presentation inscription from Cyril Connolly: ' ''Wanton Adonis, Watson's Heyre'' from C.C.'. The quotation comes from a reference in 1595 by William Covell to Shakespeare, and no doubt alludes to Peter Watson, art editor and bankroller of Horizon. Spender was the magazine's associate editor in the early days and remained Connolly's close collaborator. On the front free endpaper is the ownership signature of Lys de la Tour Dunlap, who married in 1938 and became Lys Lubbock. In the 1940's she was Connolly's secretary and mistress. Six of the poems are marked and annotated by Spender, sometimes extensively, presumably in preparation for the 1955 edition of his Collected Poems. One can only imagine that Spender had mentioned to Connolly that he couldn't find his own copy of this book.Joints splitting. Good. No dustwrapper. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Women][Sports] Photo Album Depicting a Camp Created by the Founder of Women's Field Hockey in the United States

Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania And Brussels, Belgium. late 1920s-1935. 5” x 7½”. String-tied, patterned paper over boards. 92 pages with 163 black and white photographs adhesive mounted. Most photos measure 2½” x 3½”, a few are larger and around a third are captioned. Album good: heavy edge wear, patch of surface loss to front cover and lacking most of backstrip but still firmly held together by string tie; photos generally near fine. This album documents some of the efforts of a woman who was instrumental in the development of women's sports in the United States. Constance Applebee, a native of England, introduced field hockey to the United States in 1901. She co-founded the American Field Hockey Association, was the director of athletics for Bryn Mawr, and in 1924 created the first American magazine devoted to women's sports, The Sportswoman. In 1922, Applebee founded the Pocono Hockey Camp at Camp Tegawitha which was held each summer for the next 72 years and included top coaches from around the world. She also taught lacrosse at the camp and the U. S. Women's Lacrosse Association was founded there in 1931. This album begins at that camp, probably in the late 1920s and there are at least five photos of Applebee. In addition to portraits of the athletes and hockey and lacrosse shots, the women are seen rowing, engaged in archery, riding horses and simply having fun. There's a photo of Anne Pugh, captain of the women's lacrosse national team in 1934, and for whom the eponymous Bryn Mawr Award for Athletic Excellence, Sportsmanship and Leadership is named. Also shown is Anne Townsend, another pioneer of American women's hockey and lacrosse and the captain of the women's national field hockey team for many years. The album then jumps to Belgium with shots of the 1935 Brussels International Exposition. Around one third of the album consists of travel shots in and around Brussels. Amidst these photos are a number related to an international hockey tournament. There are several team photos as well as more than one where Nazi flags can be seen and at least two with players giving Nazi salutes. We have been unable to determine exactly what competition this was or whether Applebee made the trip. The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women deemed Applebee a “Foremother of Sport for Women. ” She continued to coach and play until the age of 96, ultimately training thousands of young women in lacrosse and field hockey. An album of fiercely spirited women brought together by one of the matriarchs of women's sports in the United States. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. Full-page black and white illustrations and vignettes in red, green and blue by William Townsend. Spine of jacket missing, panels toned and chipped, spine of binding rolled, touch of foxing to edges of book block and prelims. Despite these flaws, a very good copy. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Doris from Stella. Christmas 1935. 'I have only picked two flowers before, and they both died. I'm sure I don't know why.' Kob" - Kob is the protagonist in this, Gibbons's only book for children. Tipped to the dedication page is a charming post card photograph of Gibbons, her husband Allan Webb and their only child, Laura, who was born in the year of publication; The Untidy Gnome is dedicated to "Laura Our Daughter". The verso of the card is inscribed "Doris from Stella. December 30 1935" and carries the wet stamp of the Belsize Park Studio.         BABY FOOD] Detskaya kukhnya: Prigotovlenie pishchi malym detyam. 119 retseptov [i.e. Children's Food: Cooking for Little Children. 119 recipes]

Biomedgiz, Leningrad 1935 - 64 pp. 19x13 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Wrappers rubbed with small tears on the extremities, a front cover and few pages in the beginning with small closed tear near the spine (not affecting text). Otherwise a very good, internally clean copy. First and only edition. Rare. This book was intended for mothers of young children and workers of 'maternity protection institutions' (daycare, et al.). All recipes are divided into 2 sections: cooking food for infants up to 1 year and for children from 1 to 3 years old. Among recipes are vitamin juices, fall juices, vegetarian borshch with toasts, creme soup from pearl barley, Epstein's pudding, milk with lemon juice, gogol-mogol (eggnog), rutabaga, stewed rhubarb, creme soup from oatmeal, and other. The Soviet famine of 1932-33 went into decline in 1934 but one can still spot some unusual products in the recipes. The book is interesting not only because of them but also for the guidelines for parents in the introduction. These guidelines include information on nutrition, energy balance, vitamins, what food is appropriate for what age, special remarks about particular products, etc. Children became one of the most discussed subjects as the first Soviet-born generation ('children of the October'). For years, the public library could not keep Eclipse on its shelves. If copies were checked out, they never returned". With the publisher's subscription slip laid in.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1935 - 1935 Wisden - Original Hardback

1935. Hi, This lot is an Original 1935 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the era of 1933 to 1937 were not the best of hardbacks as Wisden swapped materials in 1933, it resulted in poorer quality Wisdens but I am pleased to say that this 1935 is far better than most for the year. In fact it has been on my own shelf for several years until a recent upgrade. The front and spine gilt is excellent (spine gilt is usually terrible for this year) and the boards are very good, there are a few light line marks to the front but still very nice boards. The pastedowns are fabulous and very yellow, text to first page, the hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent.

NP, NP 1935 - Folio (14 x 13"). [103] leaves. Original 3/4 string bound grey cloth over illustrated paper covered album.Profusely illustrated throughout with no less than 185 b/w and duo-tone photographic reproductions cut out from Nazi Germany newspapers and magazines, this unique and splendidly produced album documents the history of German gymnastics from the National Socialist point of view. Already in his book "Mein Kampf," Adolf Hitler said "Not a day may go by on which a young person does not complete an hour of physical training each morning and night, and that includes every form of sports and gymnastics." His vision was that physical exercise would improve the morale and productivity of German workers as well as making sports a source of national pride for the Germans. The album is divided into four parts:The first part is a tribute to Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), a German gymnastics educator and nationalist, who, unhappy about what he saw as the humiliation of his native land by Napoleon, conceived the idea of restoring the spirits of his countrymen by the development of their physical and moral powers through the practice of gymnastics. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn is regarded in Germany as the "Turnvater" (father of gymnastics).- The second part intitled "Turnfeste" is a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the first German Gymnastics Association founded in Coburg in 1860.- The third part, intitled "Gerätturnen" (Artistic gymnastics) shows some of Germany's most famous male gymnasts performing on the ingot, horizontal bar or on horseback. The gymnasts are: Alfred Schwarzmann (won 3 Gold and 2 Bronze medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics), Konrad Frey (won 3 Gold and 6 medals in total), Heinz Sandrock, Ernst Winter, Max Stebens, Kurt Haustein, and Fritz Limburg among others.- The fourth and last part intitled "Frauenturnen" is devoted to women's gymnastics, and shows images of German women performing rhytmical gymnastics and dance evoking features of Nazi aesthetics. Many photographs depict the gymnasts evolving with Nazi flags behind. This unique album includes photographs of famous German personalities (President Paul von Hindenburg, the first NSRL leader Hans von Tschammer und Osten, Reichspropaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, etc.) delivering speeches or attending Gymnastics competitions organized by the Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen (NSRL) (The National Socialist League of the Reich for Physical Exercise) the umbrella organization for sports and physical education in Nazi Germany. The illustrations (all cut-out from German newspapers and magazines) are pasted on heavy black cardboards, with handwritten notes and captions in white by Fritz Steger.*Some rubbing and age-toning to covers. Text in German. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. * In regard to the National Socialist views expressed in his album, the compiler could be the SS-Hauptsturmführer Fritz Steger (1915-2003) who won the Ritterkreuz on 8/15/1940, and was made prisonner in Normandy on 7/8/1944.
