Photo Album, Department Store]: Zur standigen Erinnerung an das am 1. Sept. 1935. gegrundete Geschaft. [In Commemoration of the Opening of the Store on September 1st 1935]

1935 - Oblong small quarto. Cord-tied cloth board decoratively printed with a geometric pattern; tissue guard for each page. Just about fine. The album contains 44 mounted black and white gelatin silver photographs, with another 23 similar images laid in, for a total of 67 photographs. Titled in neat white album ink inside the front board, else the images are uncaptioned, but many of the images have additional signage within the image that would probably reward further research as to the exact location. Apparently meant to commemorate the opening of a German fabric and fashion store. The fascinating images are riotously stylized, with many featuring particularly modernist (or perhaps surrealistic) or creepy looking mannequins, all in service of the elaborate displays of clothing or fabrics, mostly it seems, for women's clothing.       New York: Viking, 1935. Gilt cloth. Spine and top edges a bit sunned, gilding has a bit of patina, as usual, otherwise a very good or better copy in lightly spine-sunned dust jacket with a bit of minor fraying at the lower edge toward the spine and trivial edgewear. Neat pencil name on first blank. First published edition of the author's first and only novel, an account of the victimization of three French line soldiers by commanders intent on saving their own reputations. It was preceded by five hundred promotional copies of printed sheets bound in wrappers, untitled. Signed, in ink, by the author on the first blank. Sidney Howard undertook a dramatic adaptation of some note in 1935, but the 1957 film adaptation by Stanley Kubrick did much to remind the post- war public of its virtues. It remains one of the most widely known anti-war novels of the pre-WWII years. From the distinguished WWI Fiction Collection of Barry Maurer, with his laid in bookplate (see our catalogue 150).

Spine cloth split; binding comb slightly cocked/ warped to upper portion; top ~8 binding loops no longer threading most leaves; some photos in album and/or corner brackets detached or loose. Photos clean and generally well-developed. VG overall.. 17 leaves containing 227 b/w photographs affixed with corner brackets, plus 19 loose b/w photos. Total of 246 b/w photos, ranging from 2-1/2" x 3-5/8" to 3-3/8" x 5-5/8"; most on average ~ 3-1/4" x 4-1/2". 14-7/8" x 12-1/4" Collection of circus photographs from the late 1930s and 1940s, primarily featuring performers during shows, practicing, relaxing or posing behind the tents, etc., as well as their trains, transport caravans, and circus animals (camels, elephants, horses, dogs). Many bear handwritten notes about the location, date, and/or the performer's name to the verso, and several are stamped with the Peoria and Decatur, Illinois, addresses of circusiana hobbyists Roy Frietsch and Bert Backstein, respectively. Backstein cofounded the Circus Model Builder's and Owner's Association in 1935, and was later commissioned by circus historian Gordon Potter to create a miniature version of a Golden Age circus; the result, with the assistance of Backstein's son, Bill, is now known as the Potter Backstein Collection. The photographers (we presume multiple) were likely not directly associated with circuses, but, like Backstein and Frietsch, enthusiasts who were friendly with the performers and crews, and allowed to take photographs outside of the public sphere of the performance tents. The performers include trapeze artists, clowns, elephant and horseback riders, and miniature horses, possibly from Backstein's own miniature circus, among others. Some of the circus companies featured are Russell Bros. Pan-Pacific, Cole Bros., Austin Bros.; most of the circuses pictured appear to have taken place in the Midwest. We date the photos partially based on the dates on the verso of some of the photos themselves, and also by the trucks and tractors shown transporting the circus cars. Overall, a delightful collection of performance and behind the scenes circus photos.

        Four Hedges.

New York: Macmillan Company, 1935. Written with wood engravings by Clare Leighton. 267 x 123 mms. The text block was repaired and resewn using unsupported link stitch with secondary sewing on a continuous linen board attachment. It is a full tan leather binding with hand printed and dyed back-pared onlays, and tooled foil decoration. Clare Leighton's Four Hedges is richly illustrated with her own wood cuts, I looked closely at the marks made to produce her wood cuts, the lines and cross hatching, and have made my own version of them, along with leaf printed onlays on the front cover. The edges are decorated with an image from one of the illustrations using reverse transfer technique, and the end papers are prints of leaves from my garden".

        Appointment in Samarra

London: Faber and Faber Limited,, 1935. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt on blue ground. With the dust jacket. Spine rolled, scattered light foxing. A very good copy in the dust jacket slightly chipped at spine-ends and with a few small holes to joints. First UK edition, first impression, of the author's first novel. This copy with the pencilled ownership inscription of publisher Anthea Joseph (née Hodson) to the front free endpaper, and most recently in the collection of military historian and journalist Max Hastings, though not marked as such. Anthea joined publisher Michael Joseph as secretary in 1946, married him in 1950 and took over the running of the firm after his death in 1958. "It was largely due to Anthea Joseph's energy and determination that the company survived intact to settle down as a part of the Thomson Organization and to enjoy two decades of very successful publishing" (ODNB). Originally published in the US the previous year, the first UK edition of Appointment in Samarra is increasingly hard to find, particularly in the dust jacket.
