Three Original ca. 1950 Jazz Hot Posters

      - Three original posters from the influential French quarterly jazz magazine founded March 1935 in Paris. 16 x 22 inches, dated from November 1949 to April 1950, one advertising articles on Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins, and the other two advertising Duke Ellington. In overall very good condition, with partial separations to intersecting folds, a few significant edge tears, and uniform toning. Although the American jazz magazine Down Beat was founded four months before Jazz Hot, it was not exclusively a jazz magazine at the time. Ergo, Jazz Hot holds the distinction of being the oldest existing magazine in the world devoted exclusively to jazz. Jazz Hot is acclaimed for having innovated scholarly jazz criticism before and after World-War II -- jazz criticism that was also distinguished with literary merit, and in some articles, pre-1968, with leftist political views. Several of its early contributors are credited for helping intellectualize jazz journalism and, in turn, helping jazz gain serious attention, particularly from fine arts establishments and institutions. Jazz Hot has played an integral role integrating jazz into a French national identity.

        Daily Bread.

Hampstead, London: , 1935. Octavo. Blue cloth-bound blank notebook, in blue marled paper "jacket", with calligraphic title as above in blue water-colour framed by pink paraphs. Small water-colour vignettes to the free endpapers, illustrated title page, calligraphic dedication, 4 -page pencilled contents with calligraphic heading "Remarks" with paraph, small water-colour vignette at the end, 61 clipped and neatly mounted pencilled illustrations with water-colour, all captioned on the image or beneath in pencil. "Jacket" rubbed, and separated at the spine at the front, light toning of contents, but overall very good. Unique "book" by Pares, made for and dedicated to the man who was to become her second husband, Robert Christopher Bradby. Comprises a series of well-finished whimsically satirical sketches, broadly on the the themes of women's work, fashions, and domestic life; the frontispiece showing the artist pavement-sketching - a pint of beer! - beneath signs, declaring "All me own work" and "Through no fault of my own", her future husband - identified by the initials on his attaché case - passing by, drops a couple of pennies in her hat with a curt aspersion. Pares is best known for her prolific production of stylish art deco-inspired dust jacket designs in the 30s and 40s, here she works, very effectively, in a Fougasse-ian cartoon style. Pares and Bradby were married in 1938, and honeymooned in the Himalaya's, Bip publishing her illustrated account in 1940. The couple divorced in 1948. Unusual and entertaining example of the work of this highly-rated, if slightly biographically obscure, illustrator.

The text block is slightly foxed and toned, with a neatly written inscription to the front endpaper. The dust jacket is original and correctly priced at 7/6 net to the spine, it is very slightly rubbed and nicked at the edges, lightly toned and with one or two crease marks, but overall a superb example. Horler's most famous novel by a wide margin, a pastiche of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with added Satanists for good measure; it is quite a rarity as a first edition, particularly in such good condition.Horler's most famous novel by a wide margin, a pastiche of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with added Satanists for good measure; it is quite a rarity as a first edition, particularly in such good condition.

Land Under England [ADVANCE "UNCORRECTED" PROOF with substantive manuscript corrections]

London: Victor Gollancz, 1935. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. Original publisher's drab printed wrappers. Spine slightly leaning; head of spine worn and creased with 1" tear on top front joint. Extremities gently rubbed and soiled. Inscription on front cover in blue pencil: "Advance Uncorrected [Proof]. Very rare proof copy, with a number of substantive corrections in MS, of this unsettling "fascist dystopia" novel, now little-known but praised by Karl Edward Wagner as being one of the 13 best Science-Fiction Horror novels ("The Twilight Zone Magazine, June 1983). The protagonist encounters an inhospitable underworld populated by a lost race of humans who obey without question the totalitarian government of this Hollow Earth. There are long descriptions of the ominous landscapes, and the desperation of the protagonist as he attempts to survive. Clearly this work reflects the political landscapes of Europe during the mid-1930s, and remains a poignant warning of the rise of the totalitarian regimes. ADDED: TLS from George [Locke], a formidable Sci-Fi bibliographer and owner of Ferrett Fantasy Ltd (London, 1982) to the buyer Stuart D[avid] Schiff, Sci-Fi scholar, founder of the influential horror and fantasy magazine "Whispers," editor of "Mad Scientists: An Anthology of Fantasy and Horror" (1980), and many other works. His own bibliography on the Internet Speculative Fiction Database lists more than 100 entries. See: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?10591

SSSR na Stroike" (USSR in Construction) No. 12, (December) 1935: (dedicated to the brave Soviet paratroopers) [Parachute Issue]

(The State Publishing House of Graphic Arts), M (Moscow) 1935 - Folio (16 1/2 x 11 3/4"). Unpaginated. Original illustrated wrappers, with red and black lettering on front cover. "USSR in Construction" was a stunning photographic propaganda magazine published in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1941, and briefly in 1949. It was published in Russian, French, English, German, with a Spanish-language edition added in 1938. The magazine's self-proclaimed aim was to "reflect in photography the whole scope and variety of the construction work now going on the USSR." It was conceived and designed to be an important foreign relations tool and to portray a positive image of the developments occurring in the Soviet Union to the rest of the world. "USSR in Construction" informed readers abroad of the rapid construction and industrialization taking place within the Soviet Union and depicted the nation as a leading industrial power. From a design perspective, the magazine was a fascinating example of early 20th-century photomontage, with its recurrent use of inserts, and spectacular fold-out pages. The method of printing used for the printing was rotogravure, a type of intaglio printing process, in order to create extremely high quality duotone images (in blue, green, salmon, and olive). With this striking Russian-language issue of "USSR in Construction" dedicated to the "brave Soviet paratroopers," renown Soviet artist Aleksander Rodchenko* and his wife Varvara Stepanova introduced a circular design as the basis for their page layout, thus allowing them to accomodate a variety of scenes from the parachutists' everyday activities as well as Communist political messages. This issue is complete with the parachute fold-out, and the origami-folded centerfold depicting Stalin surrounded by half a circle, which in turn is superimposed over a triangle-shaped image of clouds with numerous parachutists floating down.Discoloration and minor foxing along upper margin of covers. Moderate creasing along spine. Tiny closed tears along fore-edge of back cover, with previous owner's inscription (in Russian) on upper margin. Tip of corners slightly creased throughout (not affecting text or images). Text in Russian. Wrappers in overall fair, interior in good+ to very good, parachute fold-out and origami-folded centerfold in very good condition. *Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (1891-1956) was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design; he was married to the artist Varvara Stepanova. Rodchenko was one of the most versatile Constructivist and Productivist artists to emerge after the Russian Revolution. He worked as a painter and graphic designer before turning to photomontage and photography. His photography was socially engaged, formally innovative, and opposed to a painterly aesthetic. Concerned with the need for analytical-documentary photo series, he often shot his subjects from odd angles - usually high above or down below - to shock the viewer and to postpone recognition. He wrote: "One has to take several different shots of a subject, from different points of view and in different situations, as if one examined it in the round rather than looked through the same key-hole again and again."         [FIRST BOOK BY LANDAU] Elektroprovodimost' metallov [i.e. The Metal Conductivity]

Kharkiv: ONTI, 1935. 60 pp. 18x13 cm. 1 of 3000 copies. Original publisher's wrappers. Front wrapper is slightly rubbed. Otherwise a near fine copy, partly uncut. Extremely rare. The first printed book by Nobel laureate Lev Davydovich Landau (1908-1968) best known for his contributions in the field of condensed matter physics. When he was 24 years old he was appointed as a head of the theoretic department of Kharkiv Physico-Technic University where he started to give seminars. This book was published during Landau's years in Kharkiv. It was three years later when Landau was caught by KGB handling anti-Soviet brochures that were labeling Stalin as fascist. Pyotr Kapitsa managed to save young talented physicist from inevitable imprisonment - that was almost impossible in the late 1930s. Despite all that Lev Landau continued his work on the different states of the matter to come to revolutionary results in his research of liquid helium in 1940s. No copies found outside of Russia.

Describing his artistic method for these "specials", Rackham pointed out that "my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations". Riall comments that "From The King of the Golden River [1932], Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition" (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi).

Agents And Patients (Presentation Copy To Constant Lambert :Signed And Inscribed By The Author)

The First UK printing published by Duckworth in 1936. The BOOK is in Very Good condition.Three pages of publishers' adverts at rear as called for. Some ghosting to the spine as usually encountered but the gilt titling remains bright.Boards lightly marked in places. The text block is toned and there is some light spotting to the page edges in places. The WRAPPER is complete and is in VERY GOOD condition. Some edge wear with rubbing with small losses at the spine ends and corners (see Images). The spine is lightly toned. The remarkable Misha Black designed wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: ''For Constant and Florence, with the author's love, January 8th 1936, 'Et Ego in Arcadia Vixi''.The recipients were Constant and Florence Lambert. As the date is so early,it is highly likely that this copy was inscribed either on the publication day or certainly very close to it.Constant was a composer and author who was the prototype of the character Hugh Moreland in Powell's 'A Dance to the Music of Time'. The latin quotation is probably a reference to 'Et in Arcadia Ego' (also known as Les bergers d'Arcadie or The Arcadian Shepherds) which is a 1637-38 painting by Nicolas Poussin. It depicts a pastoral scene with idealized shepherds from classical antiquity clustering around an austere tomb. The twelve volume cycle of novels 'A Dance to the Music of Time' is also thought to have been inspired by the painting of the same name by Nicolas Poussin.Housed in a custom solander box.A wonderful association copy of a scarce early Powell title.

Painting of an Arabian horse. [Krakow], 1935.

1935. Oil on panel. 40 x 49.5 cm (frame: 52 x 63 cm). Fine original oil painting by the aristocratic Polish painter Wojciech Kossak (1856-1942): a grey Arab stallion standing near an oasis with palm trees, with a mosque in the background; within a contemporary ornamented gilt frame. Wojciech Kossak was a Polish painter of portraits and historical scenes, including battle scenes, illustrating and depicting the history of Polish armed struggle and notable Polish battles of Central and Eastern Europe against the foreign oppressors, especially the period of the Napoleonic wars and the November uprising. Among his most famous paintings are "The Raclawice Panorama" (1893-94) and the battle at the Berezyna (1895-96). He was member of the celebrated Kossak family of painters and writers, the son of painter Juliusz Kossak (1824-1899), the twin brother of freedom fighter Tadeusz Kossak, and the father of painter Jerzy Kossak (1886-1955). Wojciech Kossak's historical painting was very different in style and subject matter from that of his predecessor Jan Matejko. Kossak belonged to a new generation of Polish battle-scene artists influenced by the work of his father Juliusz. His development to a more 'impressionistic' style during his later years is beautifully demonstrated in this painting of a proud grey Arab stallion firmly standing on a sandy ground on which the oriental high sun throws its short shadow, near an oasis with palm trees and in front of a reddish mosque, surrounded by a fortified wall. - In very good condition. With a 'Certyfikat' issued by Galeria 'Zak', Warsaw & Kolobrzeg (Cezary & Jozef Zakowics).

Collection of Letters from Friderike Zweig

      - A small collection of interesting autograph letters in English from the first wife of the important Austrian novelist and biographer who was one of the most important writers in German in the inter-war period. One letter is addressed to a literary agent and written on the Zweigs' Salzburg letterhead, dated September 20, 1935. Four further letters, from 1944-1953, were written in New York after Friderike Zweig's emigration and are addressed to Shea Tennenbaum [also spelled Tenenbaum], a Yiddish writer and journalist who was evidently an admirer of Stefan Zweig's work. Also included is a newspaper clipping from the New York Post reporting on Zweig's suicide in 1942 and interviewing Friderike Zweig: "though she was overcome by grief she was not surprised by the news that he and his second wife had ended their lives yesterday."The letters are written in pen on various sizes of notepaper and are overall in fine condition, with some light age wear, folds and light toning. All but the 1935 letter include the original envelopes, two with the return address of the Writers' Service Center, and some of which bear later notes in another hand, some in Hebrew. In her letter to a Miss Strassman [1 p., September 20, 1935], Zweig expresses pleasure at their meeting: ".My husband too was very fond of meeting you." She notes that they have not received a book and requests assistance in procuring "the collection of 'Hausexemplare' which you saw in my husband's room. He just left me again for Paris and London."  She further adds, "May I bother you still with something else: my daughter should like to publish her photos of Toscanini and other artists famous in U.S.A. in American magazines and we should be glad to have a help." In Friderike Zweig's first letter to Tennenbaum [4 pp., March 3, 1944 - NB. Full text available on request], she thanks him for sending his article [in Yiddish] about Stefan Zweig: "I shall ask somebody to read it to me, and the gratefulness for your writing will make it easy to me to understand this reach [rich] and powerful language." She writes that she is enclosing another article about her ex-husband from the magazine Menorah, which she says is full of "lies" and offensive to Zweig's memory. This article, by a "Miss A.," is almost certainly Hannah Arendt's scathing 1943 review of Zweig's World of Yesterday, titled "Portrait of a Period," in which she attacked Zweig for remaining apolitical in the face of antisemitism. Friderike defends her husband passionately: "That he did not mix in politics just on opposite reason, namely his idea that he can damage the Jewish cause in speaking to [sic] loudly as a Jew. His whole work was to defend the rights of the humbles [sic] against some oppression and the devotion for greatness not in sake of fame." She further criticizes the journalist: "This woman - in the shadow of a grave - turns the words in the mouth of the most honorable man, in making him part of that, what he himself condemned." and goes on to ask Tennenbaum to write a letter to the editor of the magazine, as "My health is not so good, so I cannot risk to get too excited in writing to this woman."  In her next letter [4 pp., September 21, 1944], Friderike thanks Tennenbaum for sending another article [in Yiddish], saying that she will ask a friend to read it and tell her what it says: "it will be a pleasure for me, to hear what you say." She goes on to ask after a Graziana, perhaps Tenenbaum's wife, and ends the letter with warm wishes. Following this, she writes again [postmarked December 6, 1944], sending Tenenbaum the program for an American-European Friendship event on December 16, 1944 and writing on the verso that he should come "and bring Graciana along." The final note from Friderike Zweig [3 pp. on very small notepaper, December 1952] thanks Tennenbaum for his contribution to the festschrift for her 70th birthday. "I nearly could understand everything and will have a friend to tell me every word."  On the verso
