Ladies in the Parlor [Inscribed to Jimmy Starr]

New York: Greenberg: Publisher, 1935. First Edition. "Tully's unsentimentalized tale of a young woman who escapes small-town poverty (and various abusive and sexually aggressive men) by going to work in a high-class and politically well-connected Chicago brothel was beset by serious censorship trouble. Banned outright in Canada, it was also declared obscene by a New York court in November 1935; authorities there and elsewhere responded by confiscating and burning many copies" (PROUTY 10). A scarce title in dustjacket. Octavo (19.5cm); red cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in black on spine and front cover; black topstain; dustjacket; [8], 245pp. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "To Jimmy Starr / From one of the girls and his friend - Jim Tully / Hollywood, Calif / June 1935." Base of spine gently nudged, with a hint of sunning to spine and lightening to cloth at crown; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.00), spine-sunned, with mild wear to extremities and tiny chips to crown and two corners; Very Good+.

Tokyo: ca. 1935. |~||~||~||~| A seemingly unrecorded work by Wada, who lived from 1883 to 1967, is primarily known to the general public for his early paintings, and for winning an Academy Award in 1955 for the costume design in the film Gates of Hell. However, it is really for his pioneering studies in color theory that Wada is perhaps best remembered. In 1927 he founded the Japan Standard Color Association, and its successor, the Japan Color Research Institute is still in operation today. Boards a little foxed, overall a remarkable survival in nice condition.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom A Triumph

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1935. Quarto. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spine, front cover with gilt motif of crossed scimitars enclosing the inscription "the sword also means clean-ness + death", top edge brown, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Lawrence (from the plaster bust by Eric Kennington), 53 plates and 4 folding maps. Jacket with short closed-tear at fore-edge of back panel, very slight sunning to spine and portion of back panel, light sign sof handling. An excellent copy, largely unopened. First UK trade edition, first impression, O'Brien's so-called "Third English Edition," following the unprocurable Oxford Times edition of 1922 (of which there were just eight copies printed), and the sumptuous 1926 Cranwell edition (limited to 211 copies, with just 170 of them complete). "Lawrence had taken part in the preliminary planning of the Arab uprising and, in October 1916, was ordered to Jiddah to assess the military situation. What followed is recorded in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress, with Lawrence as Christian, a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs, successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles" (ODNB).

        Autograph letter signed ("Romain Rolland").

Villeneuve (Vaud), 16. XI. 1935. - Large 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. To André Malraux, on the role both of them play in a (political?) movement: "C'est à n'y pas croire, que 'Front Mondial' ne publie pas vos Appels! - Right edge with small tear; traces of folding.

        Porgy and Bess.

New York: Random House, 1935. Deluxe limited edition of Porgy and Bess, number 225 of only 250 copies signed by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, DuBose Heyward and director Rouben Mamoulian. Folio, original full red morocco, raised bands, top edge gilt, original slipcase. Fine in the original slipcase with light rubbing. Rare in this condition. Gershwin read Porgy in 1926 and proposed that he should collaborate with Heyward on Porgy and Bess. In 1934, Gershwin and Heyward began work on the project by visiting the author's native Charleston. Gershwin explained why he called Porgy and Bess a folk opera in a 1935 New York Times article: "Porgy and Bess is a folk tale. Its people naturally would sing folk music. When I first began work in the music I decided against the use of original folk material because I wanted the music to be all of one piece. Therefore I wrote my own spirituals and folksongs. But they are still folk music - and therefore, being in operatic form, Porgy and Bess becomes a folk opera." Today, Porgy and Bess is widely considered to be Gershwin's masterpiece. This deluxe edition of the piano-vocal score (according to Fuld, no orchestral score has ever been published) was published in 1935, the year of Porgy and Bess premiere, almost simultaneously with the first edition, and is boldly signed on the limitation page (at the rear) by George and Ira Gershwin and the other principal creators of Porgy and Bess: librettist DuBose Heyward and director Rouben Mamoulian (Fuld, 539).

Green Hills of Africa (Inscribed Association Copy)

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. Second printing. Near Fine/Good. A phenomenal association copy. This book with "P.O. Box 406 Key West Florida" written on the front paste down in the author's hand. Then, in a different pen, he has inscribed it: "To Spanish Mac with much love from her old Busted Doll Ernest Hemingway. Christmas 1935." Spanish Mac (or Mackerel) was a nickname for Elsie MacDonald, a nurse who met and attended to Hemingway when he was injured in Italy during the first World War at just 19 years old. Her nickname for Hemingway was "Busted Doll" after he came into her care with bullet wounds in his right leg. His experiences in Italy, particularly his convalescence and infatuation with one of the other nurses, Agnes von Kurowsky, became the basis for "A Farewell to Arms." In that book, Agnes is portrayed as Catherine Barclay, and Elsie MacDonald is represented by the matronly Helen Ferguson, or "Fergie" as she is sometimes called. Our belief is that this copy was in Hemingway's library (hence his address on the paste-down), before being sent to his old friend as a Christmas present in 1935. Also included with the book is a signed letter of provenance from Elsie MacDonald's grandniece, tracing the provenance of the book and describing Elsie's relationship with Hemingway. There is a large portrait of Elsie with several other nurses from her time in Italy, a second smaller portrait of her out of uniform, a snapshot of her smoking on a ship (apparently from 1914), her transatlantic passage papers, an official Italian document about her work as a nurse for the Red Cross, and other newspaper clippings and small photos. In all, a lovely archive from someone who was instrumental in Hemingway's time in Italy and plays a fairly active role in his novel, "A Farewell to Arms." The book is in Near Fine condition. One of Elsie's pictures was taped to the inscribed leaf and has left tape ghosts there. Whether it was placed there by Hemingway when he sent the book to her, we cannot say, but the inscription leaves room for it. The green cloth spine is unfaded, which is unusual. The book is dated 1935 on the title page and has the Scribner's seal on the copyright page, but no "A," so a second printing. The dust jacket is Good only, with several large creases and tears, rubbing etc, although largely intact. Near Fine in Good dust jacket.
