"GASTANKS": AN ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH BY THE CELEBRATED CONDUCTOR AND AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER

1935.. 1935.. Very good. - sc A soft-hued 5-3/4 inch high by 9 inch wide gelatin-silver photograph depicting a row of 5 cylindrical industrial gas tanks nested on a supporting structure. Mounted by the photographer with glue from the verso onto 16 inch high by 11 inch wide cream mat board. The photograph is titled, signed and dated 1935 in pencil by Fritz Reiner on the mat under the image. A title label with Fritz Reiner's name is mounted onto the verso of the mat. There is some minor brown spotting to the top left of the image. The corners of the mat are creased with a tiny tear to the bottom edge and some minor staining to the mat. A beautiful evocative industrial image. <p>The Hungarian-born conductor Frederick Martin "Fritz" Reiner (1888-1963) was highly regarded for his performances of Opera and symphonic music. Born in Budapest to a secular Jewish family he studied the piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy. Among his teachers was the young composer Bela Bartok. For a time, he worked closely with Richard Strauss before moving to the USA in 1922 to take over as condutor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Taking citizenship in his new country, he taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Both Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss where among his students. His appointment as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 marked the pinnacle of his career which included landmark recordings.<p>Philip Hart, in his book "Fritz Reiner: A Biography" writes "Reiner's absorbing hobby was photography, which had fascinated him from childhood. The Avondale home contained a well-equiped darkroom in the basement. For many years he was an active member of the Circle of Confusion, an exclusive group of celebrity amateur photographers in New York. Reiner kept abreast of the latest development in cameras, lenses, and film.<p>Original Fritz Reiner photographs are rare.

        Fortune [Signed]

New York: William Morrow & Company, 1935. First Edition. Raynolds's third novel, dedicated to his friend Thomas Wolfe of whom he would later write a short memoir, Thomas Wolfe: Memoir of a Friendship (1965). In the memoir Raynolds details his difficulty in getting Fortune published and the "despoiling" revisions he had to make in order to see it into print, turning it into a "mutilation of a better work I had done" (Thomas Wolfe: Memoir of a Friendship (2014 ed.)). The finished work portrays the decline and fall of a small east-coast American city from 1921 to 1934, populated with diverse characters ranging from wealthy ladies in failing marriages to menial laborers to suave businessmen. HANNA 2974. Octavo (21cm.); original charcoal cloth in black pictorial dust jacket by Andor Braun, dark blue topstain; [6],424pp. A few tiny chips and small scratches and bald spots along jacket flap folds, else Near Fine in a Very Good or better copy of the scarce jacket.         The Great War (Home Library issue, 4 volumes complete) in the publisher's original shipping box and previously unconfirmed publisher's dust jackets

London: George Newnes Limited, 1935. First Illustrated edition. Hardcover. This is a time capsule set of the first illustrated edition of Churchill's history of the First World War, an especially clean and bright set of the striking Home Library issue still housed in the publisher's original shipping box and wrapped in the previously unconfirmed publisher?s dust jackets. This is the only set thus we have offered, or indeed of which we are aware. Churchill originally published his history between 1923 and 1931 in six volumes titled The World Crisis. This first illustrated edition was published in 26 magazine format parts in 1933 and 1934. "Magazine format" does not do justice to the publication, which is profusely illustrated on very durable, heavy paper. The publisher subsequently offered two different 3-volume binding options. A final publisher offering in 1935 was this four-volume set produced jointly with The Home Library Book Company. This last binding option is the most elaborate and striking. It features silver, gilt, and blind stamped decoration on marbled red boards with beveled edges, marbled endpapers, and gilt top edges. This binding commands attention on the shelf. What particularly commands attention about this set - and indeed makes it a minor bibliographic discovery - is the presence of thick, clear visqueen-type jackets with heavy red paper flaps that nicely complement the red marbled endpapers. These jackets are previously unknown to the collecting community and even to bibliographers. We have only seen one other set of these jackets, which were unprotected by the publisher?s original box and badly yellowed, shrunken, and chipped, and could not be definitively confirmed as original. The presence of this set of jackets in the publisher?s original shipping box decisively settles the question. These jackets are in good condition. The main problem is cracking owing to shrinkage over time, which has left the Volume III jacket with a front flap fold split and a partial split at the upper front hinge. Volume II shows a small split at the upper front hinge, Volume I at the lower rear flap fold. Nonetheless, the jackets are otherwise intact. Though we are incapable of chemical analysis to definitively identify the jacket material, the timing for some variation of Cellophane fits, with widespread introduction of cellulose film to the United Kingdom in the 1930s by the British textile company Courtaulds, which was producing a viscose film named viscacelle in 1930 and by 1935 had evolved into British Cellophane. The fact that the jacket material ages very poorly combined with the commanding attractiveness of the bindings beneath would explain why we know of only two sets of such jackets to survive. The original publisher?s shipping box is fully intact with two pasted labels. A ?Home Library Book Co.? shipping label is printed to a Leeds address. A second label on the box label states ?1 Set. Great War. | 4 Vols. Moroquette.? The latter adjective is apparently a fancier descriptive appellation even than the customary ?leatherette? used to describe the bindings. Within the box, the three original tissue sheets laid between the books also survive. The books themselves are, as would be expected, in fine condition, with exceptionally bright bindings and wonderfully crisp, bright contents. Minor spotting to the page edges ? doubtless a consequence of lifetime storage in the publisher?s box ? seems a trivial price to pay for their otherwise spectacular preservation.         Focus : Vols. I - IV (all published)

Nd [], Deya Privately Printed 1935 - Four volumes, 12mos, pp. 12, 23, 40, and 64. Rebound in a green three-quarter cloth binding, with original wrappers bound in. Finely preserved copies. First editions, SIGNED BY GRAVES IN 1978 ON THE COVER OF VOLUME I. From the library of Honor Wyatt, with her ownership signature to front free endpaper: 'Honor Ellidge (formerly 'Glover', originally 'Wyatt')'. Published through the whole of 1935 in Deya, Focus's contributors and subscribers were the same people: the English literary expatriates who formed the circle of friends surrounding Riding, Graves and the Seizin Press. This insularity of production explains both the scarcity of Focus (the exact print run is unknown, but estimates settle around the twenty-five mark), and the fact that most copies, when found at all, are found bound together, carefully preserved by the people who produced them. An engagingly chatty literary periodical, Focus was superseded in the autumn of 1935 by Epilogue, a more formal, po-faced version of its predecessor. Graves' signature, dated 1978, appears here on the cover of Vol. I. Honor Wyatt was a member of the Graves- Riding inner circle at Deya. She was married first to the journalist Gordon Glover, and later to George Ellidge, both fellow Deya habitues. Wyatt and Glover contribute articles to all four issues. Extremely scarce, and with a fine association.

        Whiteway.

London: the C. W. Daniel Company,, 1935. A Colony on the Cotswolds. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in red. With the dust jacket. Facsimile frontispiece of a letter from H. G. Wells, 5 photographic plates. 4 laid-in newspaper clippings regarding a radio play about Whiteway, with accompanying annotated leaves. Small hole to front joint not reaching text-block, spotting to edges. An excellent, bright copy in the dust jacket with a few markings to the front panel and two portions of tape-repair to verso. First edition, first impression. Whiteway was a Tolstoyan anarchist community established by Quaker journalist Samuel Veale Bracher near the Gloucestershire village of Miserden in 1898. "Vegetarianism was obligatory, nudism optional ? [An early visitor remarked that] prosperity ? sapped some of the primitive rigour from the venture. However, the sexual permissiveness that had been one of the founding tenets remained ? In the 1920s the Colony was infiltrated by the Home Office, anxious about revolutionary tendencies" (Aslet, Villages of Britain, online). Shaw was one of the first members of the community, which survives to the present day.

        Amelia Earhart Photograph Signed.

Silver gelatin photographic print signed and inscribed by Amelia Earhart, "To Paul and Myrtle Mantz friends in need Amelia Earhart 1935." Paul Mantz was a noted air racing pilot, pioneering movie stunt pilot and consultant who gained fame on two stages: Hollywood and in air races. A nice association linking these two pioneers in their respective fields of aviation. The print measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Amelia Earhart recorded a number of firsts in her extraordinary aviation career: she was the first person, man or woman, to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland, Honolulu to Oakland. She was the first woman to fly the Atlantic in a plane (1928); the second person, and the first woman, to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932); and the first woman to fly solo across the continental U.S. She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

        The Pastures of Heaven.

Covici Friede, New York 1935 - A Very Good plus copy with some light foxing to the boards in Very Good unclipped dust jacket with chipping to the head & foot of the spine, a small damp spot near bottom of spine and a closed tear. Previous owner name on front jacket flap. A very uncommon copy of Steinbeck's uncommon second book in a very collectible state. "The Pastures of Heaven" is a short story cycle consisting of twelve interconnected stories about a valley, the Corral de Tierra, in Monterey, California, which was discovered by a Spanish corporal while chasing runaway Indian slaves. Enchanted by the valley's natural beauty, the corporal names it Las Pasturas del Cielo or "The Pastures of Heaven." The stories are written in classic Steinbeck style; the lives of the families that relocate to the valley are portrayed with a mixture of humor and poignance. A recurring theme in the book is the pain caused when people try ineptly to help or to please others. The text sheets for this 4th issue are from the original 2500 sets printed by Brewer, Warren & Putnam for the 1932 First Edition of this title of which only 1000 sets were bound and only 650 copies sold. BW&P sold the remaining 1850 sets to Robert Ballou in 1932 who published approximately 1000 sets in 1932. Of the 850 remaining original printed sets, Ballou published an undetermined number of copies in the third issue. That number was probably in the 500 copies range and in 1935 Ballow sold the remaining copies (350?) to Covici Friede and this 4th issue appeared in 1935.
