Alain Campbell White Letters to Frederick Gamage

Summerville, Littchfield and New York: Self Written, 1935-1944. Alain Campbell White letters to Frederick Gamage cover the years from April 4, 1935 to September 15, 1944. For this ten year period there are 364 dated letters and 28 incomplete letters (lacking front date page). The letters are an ongoing correspondence between White and Gamage which covers all aspects of problem chess. The letters show a development of mentor (White), encouraging ad occasionally prodding his protégé (Gamage) in developing skills in problem construction. As the letters progress over this ten year period, the reader can observe the relationship develop between the two men, from a formal intercourse to a more comradely banter. White offered suggestions, comments and themes for problems. White’s vast and profound technical knowledge, his artistic appreciation, his ability in expressing himself, and his enthusiastic and friendly encouragement were the great inspiration of many problems Gamage constructed, and he was lucky enough to be among his host of correspondents. Some of the letters were multiple pages hand typed, but often hand written, some unsigned or just initialed, usually with the location White was residing and the date written. Included with the letters are the limited edition work by Alain White on Gamage Frederick Gamage: An Artist in Chess Problems and Mike Prcic’s book Frederick Gamage. The letters in the latter work have been reproduced from the original letters offered now.Newman Guttman was one of a few problemists to visit Frederick Gamage. After the passing of Gamage, the letters from Alain White along with Gamage’s other chess papers were given to Guttman. He, in turn, gave these papers to Edgar Holladay. Holladay came into the possession of what problemists would consider as "treasures," one-of-a-kind items from famous and well-known problemists. Robert Moore and Holladay were good friends and these were passed to him by Holladay’s wife, Rita.Serious buyers may inquire about more information regarding this collection.Condition:The letters have folds for postage, some occasional stains, and occasional edge wear else a very good collection. They are housed in individual archival holders held in a multiple three ring binders.

        Taille de l'homme

Grasset. First edition, review copy. Signed autograph of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz to Robert Garric. Catholic reformist, he was the   founder of "social Teams" in 1920, which aimed to establish a social elite and bring the good word about the brotherhood born of the trenches to the workers, in the tradition of patronage. Simone de Beauvoir, then student of Robert Garric in philosophy at Sainte-Marie Institute of Neuilly, remembers him   in his "Memoirs of a Tidy Wench"   "Garric appeared; I forgot everything else and myself; the authority of his voice subdued me. In twenty years we he explained, he had discovered in the trenches the joys of camaraderie that removed social barriers. [...] To deny all limits and all separations, get out of my class, out of my skin: this slogan electrified me. [...] Must serve my life! Must serve all my life! " Back passed, small light spots on the boards, reading a few marks in pencil by the dedicatee in margins of some leaves. Grasset Paris 1935 12x19cm broché

[Faux-Pas] Digressions. Jeu complet d'épreuves abondamment corrigées par l'auteur.

First new version of the autograph manuscript of 17 pages, written in 1935. Manuscript writing very dense, full excluding the last 13 lines of printed text, with many erasures, corrections and additions. Complete typescript with a few variations from the manuscript and a copy of the first edition published in 1947 and finally published in 1950 is attached. In 1935, Blanchot has been working for 3 years on Thomas the Obscure (he completed in 1940) when interrupts his writing "that would not stop" to write the last word, a short story he describes as "an attempt to bypass another book underway to overcome the interminable and get a more linear narrative, yet painfully complex, a silent decision ... ". In 1983, Blanchot, referring to the motivations of this "innocent text where murderers omens of future time resounded," can not say "how it is written and how unknown requirement, it has the answer." "It was not a text for publication," he says in the afterword of hindsight. The last word will indeed published 12 years later in 550 copies in the collection golden age (although it went bankrupt at the same time, the book will be on sale in 1950) . So the first story is meant at once the last word and the refusal of its unveiling. "Surely begin to write immediately to achieve at the end (...), this means at least hope not to make a career and finding the shortest path to finish early." In this "Apocalypse" Blanchot leads his own novel being written: Thomas, the hero, and is ironically called the new power otherwise without express "what happened to him [that] saying nothing happened ". But if, starting with the last word, Blanchot marks the end of writing, it is an end that remains unpublished. And when the book is finally published, it will be more of a work already substantial: Thomas the Obscure, Amminadab, Faux pas, the Most High, Death Sentence and The Share of fire. Therefore, the last word is not "waiver be Master and Judge," but a written waiver of this "itself in vain." It can no longer be "the unusual resolution to deprive [Language] to support (...) that is to say more than language" but, as part of the work, there is a "word to say and do not say. ". A word rewritten by the writer he became transformed by writing and by war. This is the inaugural version, first draft of thirty young Blanchot, we present here and C. Bident his biographer, thought "probably never know." Narrative foundation, basic writing, many scholars have studied the last man, "painfully complicated" as even the author, but who calls a few "prophetic" pages a reflection on language (and, through him, totalitarianism) marking the second part of the century. Now we present the manuscript written in 1935 and until then unknown, differs considerably from the following two versions of 1947 and 1983. Written in the third person (the later will they, homodiégétiques) the story is much longer. It contains descriptions and including many deleted scenes that will be removed in the published versions: "The sun bathed [plaza] a fiery light of huge mirrors, placed at the four corners, be kicked around in a maze of colors . "" A cloud was soon raised to the ceiling, black cloud crossed by small glowing patches. "" I am worried, he said. I was wrong to leave earlier this house when I get home, surrounded by torches are extinguished one by one. What will I find now? How to live without I guideline? Can you tell me anything? "" Some children, head blackened coal, removed the sand in which they were buried, and trying to achieve with small white stones they drew from their pocket, they reviled in their incomprehensible language. "" Taking advantage of the lull, dogs out of their hole, as if they had been secretly excited by a master, they rushed to the sleeper by pulling on their links. They tried to right, left, then discovering it under the covers, they are slipped badly, small first, then the big dog, like a vicious bunch of kids. "" The intoxication of being together having lost younger pushed them into their own home as if she had ceased to be theirs, and they threw screams waking intruders from their homes. "But this manuscript provides the exegete especially demonstrative few passages that provide clarification on the meaning of the story:" Until is not an indifferent manner to the past and the future. If it is intended to extend a veil over what approach, if a link between, by mutual repulsion, separate time moments it appears from something, something else is not shown, however, that such limit. "" They whom nothing was forbidden to speak and who knew, behaved as if their knowledge had been to break with the language. "" The disciple on this admission, redoubled adoration, give themselves shots that change them into what they can be. At first common deception, they ran, one to an animal world, the other to a riveted himself a slave. "" They wanted to laugh again nonsense, is torturing a lie, but, having no other way to stand as the apotheosis, they lost sight of their mutual desire for death and blissfully enjoyed the rest. "A key reading these valuable addition changes that reflect real shifts of the author. If the most important is, of course, the choice of the first person in later versions, some lexical variations are also very significant. Thus: "I offer the spectacle of my vices" in the manuscript and typescript 1935 becomes: "I offer the spectacle of my mistakes" in the published version of the same in 1947. "This is an extract from the speech the third city "becomes" This is an excerpt of the speech on the third on the third State "; "A noise (...) was one stroke the whole town" becomes "was one stroke all the people" and "... on a deck of onomatopoeia" becomes "... a gateway ranting." Finally, it is a lyrical Blanchot that reveals this "abrupt call of language": "She had her hair hanging these broad wings velvet are a promise of transformation." "... When the sun casting its light shining against the mirrors everywhere, stopped above the esplanade and heard this loud voice, private mysteriously vowels and consonants, which announces the sharing of spaces" "Shouts of the crowd came and brought calls for an immense distress. "" He ran on the book and bit his teeth, as if he had made insensitive despite the bitterness of those old pages. ". In hindsight Blanchot hesitate to comment, however, that this text provides for the third time and he took care to revise again, 50 years after its first release. However, it brings some bits of explanations that reveal the importance of this little story in the life and work of one of the most mysterious writers of the twentieth century: "The last word has to tell main line, as having instead, the total wreck, the narrative itself can not therefore be preserved, and impossible or absurd, unless he should claim prophetic, heralding a future in the past already there or saying there always when there is nothing: either there wearing nothing and prevent the annihilation that it can not escape its long-term process which is rehashing and eternity. Not in the Grove Music Online works list. "Firmly rooted in the French 19th-century tradition, Büsser's symphonic and choral writing is indebted to Gounod and Saint-Saëns. He is best known, however, for his dramatic works, which betray Wagner's impact in both their form and their use of the orchestra. The influence of Debussy, whose advice Büsser sought over the opera that became his most successful, Colomba (c1902-10), is also evident in certain harmonic procedures and in an acute sensitivity to orchestral colour. The ballets, such as the light-hearted La ronde des saisons (1905) with its amusing descriptive touches, provide further evidence of his keen dramatic sense." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online.

Published in October [25,] 1935 after serialization in Scribner's magazine, it was indeed a book about landscape, though Hemingway referred to it in more magical or mystical terms as 'country,' ??"It is probably that this communication of the sense of place and the sense of the immediacy and palpability of the experience in that place, is what gives the Green Hills of Africa its special distinction...??"But even more than country, Green Hills of Africa is a book about writing and writers As a writer, he wanted to see 'how far prose can be carried if any one is serious enough and has luck,' to see if prose could attain a fourth and even a fifth dimension" (Mellow, Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences; Baker, Hemingway, the Writer as Artist). ??IN: Scribner's Magazine, May - November, 1935. New York: Scribner's, 1935. Quarto, original wrappers; custom box. Seven issues (complete). Without any of the usual stamps or labels. An outstanding set - the finest we've seen. . Fine....

        Pylon

First Edition New York Harrison Smith & Robert Haas 1935 First Printing (February, 1935, on copyright page), in First Issue dust jacket (with correct titles listed on rear panel). 8vo: 315,[1]pp. Publisher's cobalt-blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in gilt within a horizontal black band, top edge stained black; pictorial dust jacket, priced $2.50. About Fine (flaking to gilt spine lettering), in a bright, about Fine jacket (spine head rubbed with miniscule loss). Provenance: from the collection (now housed at the University of Central Florida Libraries) of bibliophiles Walter and Dorothy Donnelly with their label on front paste down. Petersen A17.1a. Fargnoli, pp. 211-16. Fine- In the 1930s, Faulkner sought release from increasing personal and professional problems through flying lessons; he bought a plane, and his brothers also learned to fly. Eventually Faulkner gave the plane to his brother Dean?and was overcome by guilt when Dean died in a crash in the same year Faulkner published Pylon, which concerns the exploits of a wandering troupe of gypsy aviators. According to The Literary Encyclopedia, Pylon "has many failings, but did offer Faulkner a chance to try out some of the techniques he perfected in Absalom, Absalom!, which is widely considered his greatest achievement." In fact, Faulkner claims to have written Pylon to get away from writing Absalom (Fargnoli, p. 213). Fargnoli calls Pylon "Faulkner's most self-consciously modernist work" and points out the novel's references to both Joyce (in particular the Aeolis episode in Ulysses) and T. S. Eliot (the penultimate chapter of Pylon is entitled "Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock" and The Waste Land is evoked throughout). Basis for the 1958 film The Tarnished Angels, featuring Robert Stack, Rock Hudson and Dorothy Malone, about an airplane contest in New Orleans during Mardis Gras. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         [A Collection of Letters, Manuscripts and Printed Items]

Various Places, 1935. A substantial lot, in very good to fine condition. The material is either directed to, or to the wife or associates of, community leader, inventor and banker John D. Overholt, of Wooster, Ohio, and consists of the following: [a] Five autograph letters signed, 6pp, 4to and 8vo, West New Brighton, New York, 92 Waters Avenue, West New Brighton, New York, The Central Methodist Church, Lansing, Michigan, and 752 Hartshorn Street, Alliance, Ohio, 5 April 1926 to 6 February 1935, with 4 envelopes. From Markham to his "good and generous friend," John D. Overholt and his wife, agreeing [5 April 1926] after "coming back from Missouri" to "have one or more lecture-readings in your meridian"; sending thanks [23 April 1926] "... for your recent letter, inviting to visit you on my way home from Kansas City ... [I]t will be a 'consummation devoutly to be wisht'." And discussing his lecture fees ("Let me say that the matter ... is left entirely in your hands."); confirming [4 July 1932] that he has sent the "... two copies of New Poems" as requested and hopes to see "you two lovely souls" during a forthcoming visit to Toledo; writing [21Oct. 1932] "It has been a joy to meet you again -- you and your two radiant sons, who are blessing the world with their service. . . . We will all meet again ... here or in that beautiful world that awaits us in the great days ahead…"; seeking advice [6 Nov. 1932] "What course would I best take to satisfy the Canada company that Alma Newton Anderson is alive at the present time so that they will feel like paying me the November annuity check. It appears that she is refusing to send the company the usual statement that she is alive"; and [6 Feb. 1935] inquiring about Mrs. Overholt ("I am wondering whether she is keeping on with her little essays, some of which I read with keen interest. She ought to have an outlet in some magazine.") and reporting on work in progress ("...I am working on my Collected Poems, which I am hoping to print next year. I want to see them thru the press, for I don't wish to trust the punctuation to other hands. To me, a comma is as significant as a bend in the Mississippi." Together with a typed letter signed, dated 24 Aug. 1933, from Anna Catherine Markham to John Overholt, written on behalf of her husband, who "was called away to New England leaving a stack of unanswered letters on his table." [b] An autograph manuscript signed of Markham's poem, "Inbrothered," one page, oblong 8vo, dated March 1925, inscribed by the poet, "For my friend, John D. Overholt." [c] An autograph manuscript signed of Markham's poem, "The Place of Peace," one page, oblong 8vo, inscribed "For dear Mrs. J.S. Overholt -- June, 1926." [d] An autograph manuscript signed of Markham's poem, "Two at a Fireside," one page, oblong 4to, dated 1929, inscribed by the author: "To John D. Overholt, friend and comrade, one who never forgets, one who is never forgotten!" [e] An autograph statement signed, written in pencil on brown wrapping paper, one page, oblong 8vo, "House of J.D.O. / Wooster," 3 May 1928. To "My dear Miss Richard [?]", reading: "This concerns my little friend, Mildred, who was absent from school today, attending the Circus. Of course you and I know that a child's one day in the Circus may teach her more than a week in the school. She comes into firsthand contact with the lion, the monkey and the polar bear. We hope you will find this sufficient explanation of Mildred's absence. Respectfully…." [f] An autograph letter signed, one page, 4to, on Markham's printed stationery, 92 Waters Avenue, West New Brighton, Staten Island, New York, 11 July 1928, with envelope. To the "Members of the Poets Garden" in Los Angeles, thanking them for flowers sent on the poet's birthday: "You are all angels: hence I am not surprised that you do these angelic deeds … I will keep you all in mind till the last foam-flower closes over me …Your loving remembrances keep my heart alive and singing all this way." [g] An unsigned autograph manuscript, 6pp, 4to, n.p., n.d. Written in prose on 6 leaves of plain paper, with a number of revisions by the author. A reminiscence of an episode in Markham's younger days, beginning: "In the Far West, did I meet any free-booters, any Knights of the Road? Yes, yes, once long ago, I was saddling my horse, after having worked a long summer in the wheat fields, as a strawbuck, bucking the straw from the threshing machine ... While busy sinching [sic] the saddle on my horse, I was approached by a tall powerful fellow who had been working with me … He came up to me all smiles and friendliness." Evidently incomplete. [h] An autograph manuscript signed, entitled "My First School," 3pp, 4to, n.p., n.d. A reflective piece, in prose, written on the rectos of 3 leaves of plain paper, with Markham's revisions in the text which commences: "In 1872 I was graduated at the State Normal School in San Jose, California; and was soon called to teach a school in San Luis Obispo County. On arriving in the neighborhood ... I found that the school house nearby was not yet completed … I picked out an immense oak-tree and I told all the pupils of that school to meet me under the oak-tree on Monday morning." [i] A black-and-white photograph of the poet, by White, approx. 3 1/2" X 5 1/4," inscribed in the border beneath: "Your friend, Edwin Markham 1935." And finally, [j] A group of printed items including a pamphlet produced for the Memorial Service held for Markham at the St. George Theatre, April 20, 1941; a 1924 broadside printing of "The Man with the Hoe," signed by the poet and dated 1933; a mimeographed copy of the same poem, produced for "The Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the Publication of The Man with the Hoe," inscribed by Markham "For my friend, John D. Overholt," signed, and dated "Jan. 1926"; three different broadside printings of "Lincoln, The Man of the People," one a mimeographed version (c. 1924) inscribed: "For my friend, John D. Overholt, in memory of happy hours together, in 1925" and with a line deleted by the poet, a second (printed) copy, with a typed correction in one line, signed by Markham and dated 1928, and a third (clean) printed version, signed "Edwin Markham 1933."

        The Ghost of Napoleon.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1935 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, paper label to the spine. With the pictorial dust jacket. Rear hinge very slightly cracked, else a superb copy in an almost untouched jacket. Second impression of the US first edition, some six months after the first, first published in the UK by Faber & Faber in 1933. This copy with a 1p typed letter signed from Liddell Hart to the journalist and Western historian Don Russell, corner-mounted on the front free endpaper. In the letter BHLH explains that he hopes that Russell has received the copy that he had asked Yale to send, and asks whether he has managed to trace his articles on Lee. On the rear free is a letter from Norman V. Donaldson, secretary to, and later managing director of the Yale University Press, sending the present volume and explaining that; "We published the American edition of this work last autumn, and although it is somewhat technical, the demand for it from the general public has necessitated our doing a second printing." Based on his Trinity College, Cambridge, Lees Knowles Lectures for 1932-33,"The Movement of Military Thought from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century, and its influence on European History." The New York Times review placed this title on "the never overcrowded shelf of sharply intelligent, adult, thoroughly interesting reading." Dedicated "To 'T.E.' [Lawrence] who trod this road before 1914." A wonderful copy of this extremely hard to find title.

Nancy Mitford was the eldest of the six notorious Mitford Sisters. Neither was amused by their older sister's book" (ODNB).

Trattati di architetura ingegneria e arte militare.. A cura di Corrado Maltese. Trascrizione di Livio Maltese Degrassi. [2 Bde. komplett].

4, LXVIII, 289 S., Taf. 186 Taf. 290-616 S., Taf. 187-331, OLwd., Min. gebrauchsspurig. EA dieser Ausgabe. (= Classici italiani di scienze techniche e arti / Trattati di architettura, 3. Bd.).

2.         Ulysses (Signed by Joyce & Matisse)

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. First edition thus. Very Good +/Good. A Very Good+ (approaching Near Fine) copy of the book with bright gilt on the front cover. Spine gilt dulled and very slight dark marginal staining at the upper and lower edge to a handful of pages near the end (see images). In a Good only slipcase with several joints splitting, but still holding (a few joints reinforced with archival tape). Complete with the six soft-ground etchings and the 20 tipped in preliminary sketches on blue and yellow sheets. One of 1500 copies, although it is estimated that Joyce only signed a couple hundred copies. Joyce's masterwork of modernism, one of the great books of the 20th century. Though it follows a single day in the life of Dubliner Leopold Bloom - June 16th, a day which has since become a worldwide holiday - Ulysses's complex structure is actually inspired by Homer's Odyssey. The book's stream of consciousness prose and its experimental nature were groundbreaking, and many of the techniques Joyce uses have since become standard fare. Ulysses took Joyce over seven years to write, and the story of its publication became an epic in itself. The work was first released in serial from 1918 to 1920 in the magazine The Little Review, and published in Paris in a limited first edition in 1922 by Sylvia Beach, the owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookstore. It was not, however, released in the UK and United States, where the book had quickly been banned. In fact, copies were smuggled into both countries until a landmark obscenity trial cleared the book for American publication in 1934. Joyce claimed that he "put in so many enigmas and puzzles [into Ulysses] that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality." Time has certainly proven him correct. "Ulysses is the most important contribution that has been made to fictional literature in the twentieth century. It will immortalize its author with the same certainty that Gargantua and Pantagruel immortalized Rabelais, and "The Brothers Karamazov" Dostoevsky. It is likely that there is no one writing English today that could parallel Joyce's feat…" (Contemporary NY Times Review, 1922) The Limited Editions Club was known for its impeccably illustrated volumes of classic texts. Founder George Macy had used such famous artists as Picasso - to illustrate a 1934 version of Lysistrata - and spared no expense for his 1935 edition of Ulysses. Matisse was paid $5,000 and made 26 illustrations for the work. Rumor has it that Matisse did not even read Ulysses itself, but rather based all of his work on the Odyssey. He did, however, stay in contact with Joyce while he worked on the drawings, done in charcoal and pencil. "…the edition represents a rare example of a text in which both author and illustrator occupy an important position in the canon of their respective arts." (James A Knapp, "Joyce and Matisse Bound: Modernist Aesthetics in the Limited Editions Club Ulysses"). Very Good + in Good dust jacket.

Der Öffentliche Gesundheitsdienst. Jahrgang 1 - 10 (mehr nicht erschienen) in 14 Bänden. Zeitschrift des Reichsausschusses für Volksgesundheitsdienst E.V., der Staatsmedizin Akademie Berlin und der Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft der deutschen Ärzte des öffentlichen Gesundheitsdienstes.

Leipzig: Thieme; 1935-1944..
