Amelia Earhart writes a check for $50 to the Carlton Hotel

New York, August 16, 1935. 6" x 2.75". "Check Signed ""Amelia Earhart"", drawn on The Fifth Avenue Bank dated ""August 16, 1935"" and made payable to the ""Carlton Hotel"" for ""50.00"", also written as ""Fifty-, 00/100"" Dollars. PSA/DNA encapsulated graded Near Mint/Mint 8. Measures 6"" x 2.75"", with saw tooth edging. Verso stamped three times, once as ""Carlton Hotel, Cash Account, For deposit in the Riggs National Bank, Washington Properties …"", with a second stamp from ' The Riggs National Bank, Aug 18 1935 …"" With the third stamp being somewhat illegible, but dated ""August 20"".A near mint example of a check written to the Carlton Hotel in Washington D.C. which today is known as The St. Regis Hotel . Earhart was known to have stayed there on multiple occasions. The Carlton was frequented by numerous notables and celebrities of their day. President Calvin Coolidge cut the hotel's ceremonial grand-opening ribbon eight decades ago, and since then, the hotel has been visited by every U.S. president (Reagan had his hair cut there) and numerous celebrities (Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Cher) were frequent guests. Howard Hughes kept a permanent suite at the Carlton during World War II. In 1999, the hotel -- formerly known as the Carlton Hotel -- changed hands and became the second St. Regis in the world.Amelia Earhart was photographed at that hotel during her stay on several occasions, which may be seen along the bottom of the listing.Earhart's plane crash in 1937 remains shrouded in mystery. In an official report, the U.S. government concluded that the two seasoned flyers, unable to locate their destination of Howland Island, ran out of fuel, crashed into the water and sank. Earhart was declared legally dead on January 5, 1939. The question of why and where her plane went down, however, has never been put to rest. In the seven decades since Earhart’s disappearance, a number of hypotheses have emerged, some with scientific evidence behind them and others based on more dubious claims. Some theorists, for instance, believe Earhart was actually a secret agent working for the U.S. government, pointing to her close friendship with Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor. They suggest that the plane crashed after its pilots intentionally deviated from their course to spy on Japanese-occupied islands in the Pacific, or that Earhart and Noonan landed on one of them and were taken prisoner. Yet another theory holds that Earhart returned safely to the United States, changed her name and lived a long life in obscurity. And yet a more current theory believes that the legendary American pilot died as a castaway, not in a plane crash, with the skeleton of a castaway found on the island of Nikumaroro, Kiribati, in 1940 possibly belonging to Earhart. In August of 2016, the TIGHAR team revealed Earhart made more than 100 radio transmissions calling for help between July 2 and July 6 of 1937, which rules out the possibility of her plane crashing. Her plane had disappeared the morning of July 3. The airplane's radio would not have worked if the engine was not running... For more on this new information, see http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/01/world/history-rewritten-amelia-earhart-trnd/A fantastic personal example of this Amelia Earhart signed check."

Map of Mexico City and Valley.

Frances Toor Studios. Mexico. 1935. - Color pictographic / pictorial street map, 19 3/4 x 25 inches on sheet size 20 1/2 x 26 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Light wear to folds, tears to mid right map now visible only on close examination. Brightly colored pictorial map designed by the Guatemalan artist Carlos Merida (1891-1984) showing a street plan of central Mexico City with pictographs of many buildings and a numbered "Business Directory" of 21 places in the cartouche, referencing numbers on the map. A note under the map states that "the motifs of the border consist of Aztec and colonial symbols of the names of suburban places." At the lower centre of the map is an inset map of the valley surrounding Mexico City. A wonderful example of the "translation" of the twentieth century decorative map that MacDonald Gill pioneered, here with a Hispanic sensibility.

King Jasper. WITH: Autograph Letter signed

1935 - (FROST, Robert) ROBINSON, Edwin Arlington. King Jasper. A Poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson. WITH: FROST, Robert. Autograph letter signed. New York: Macmillan, 1935. Octavo, original half black cloth, green cloth covers, original glassine, original slipcase with printed paper label. $5000.Limited first edition of Arlington's final narrative poem, number 64 of only 250 copies, with an Introduction by Robert Frost. This copy signed by Frost on the final page of his Introduction, and further inscribed by him, "For my friend James Patrick J. Murphy, Coconut Grove Florida, February 12, 1936." Accompanied as well by an autograph letter signed by Frost to Murphy, inviting him to send his copy of this book to Frost for him to sign: "I shall be glad to write my name in it for you."Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet Edwin Robinson was "the most highly regarded and widely read poet of his generation" (Hamilton, 456). "The first major American poet of the 20th century, [he was] unique in that he devoted his life to poetry and willingly paid the price in poverty" (ANB). This volume is also prized for Frost's perceptive and elegiac Introduction, in which he praises Robinson and mourns his passing, as Robinson died mere hours after he finished revising the galley proofs of this work. "Robinson has gone to his place in American literature and left his human place among us vacant." This essay marks Frost's beginning in literary criticism. In addition to being a poignant tribute to Robinson, it is also a distancing of Frost's own poetry from the Modernist experiments in imagism and the politically influenced experiments in propaganda. The laid-in autograph letter signed by Frost is dated February 1, 1936, just a few days before the February 12 inscription in the book. Following the address and date the letter reads: "Dear Mr. Murphy: If you hurry and send your King Jasper to me it should easily reach me at the above address before I leave for Cambridge Mass on February 15th. I shall be glad to write my name in it for you. And here enclosed is an item of mine you may care to have. Any help I can give you in collecting please let me know. Sincerely yours, Robert Frost." The envelope, addressed to Murphy in Frost's hand, is also present. In addition, a typed letter (not signed) from Frost to Murphy from 1960 is included, in which an 86-year-old Frost apologizes to Murphy for not being able to see him during a recent visit to Bryn Mawr. He writes, "I have always wondered about you and your interest in my books. I believe I have here in Brewster Street some of your collection I have yet to put my hand to. I must tend to it when I get back from my next excursion. Would it be too much to ask you to sort of catalogue what you already have? I try to take care of my collectors sooner or later."Though they never met, Frost and recipient James P.J. Murphy, an aspiring poet and avid collector, corresponded for nearly a quarter of a century. "Murphy was a shy man with a passion for literature and fine printing. He found both in Frost's books. The poet autographed Murphy's copies of his works""often after considerable delay""and sent him his special Christmas cards" (Burch, "Three Unpublished Letters of Robert Frost to James P.J. Murphy," in ANQ, 13:2, 35-40). Unpublished letters between the two""such as the two present letters, one signed""show Frost giving the young poet sound advice on getting his poems published, and promising to get around to autographing copies of his works that Murphy had sent to him for that purpose. Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
