New York: A.S. Crockett, 1935. Hardcover. Good Only. Green cloth-covered boards, 7 1/2" x 5 1/4". Staining to boards, and joints, and moderate wear to extremities, especially spine, which shows fraying to top and bottom. Very slight crack at rear joint, but apart from a slight spine lean, is still very tightly-bound. Previous owner's stamp to front free endpaper. Lacks dustjacket. Albert Stevens Crockett was a well-known and respected journalist whose interests ranged from spirits (this book), to spiritualism, and communication with the departed soul of his late beloved step-daughter (his book Revelations of Louise). Earlier, Crockett's Old Waldorf Bar Days, by his own account, was more about the social mores of the day, and less about the actual drinks. After that eventful day of repeal, December 5th, 1933, however, Crockett realized there were few barmen alive, or of those yet extant, who remembered many of the recipes of the countless pre-Prohibition libations. He found one, however, a Joseph Taylor, who had managed to hang on to a copy of the informal Waldorf "Bar Book" wherein all new and successful recipes were dutifully inscribed, and incorporating its contents, created this (recipe) book. The author writes: "For the convenience of students of the cultural history and mores of the American people, as well as for those who wish to set a goal before starting to mix, thebibulous concoctions long known and served at the Bar of the Old Waldorf have been arranged alphabetically, and in two general classes. The cocktails have been set down in one list and the others, which might be classed as 'beverages'..." Besides the revised formulas for cocktails and other mixed drinks.included [are} a number of recipes...mostly gathered outside of the United States, and many of them tested and approved by author." A fairly-priced, fairly-beat copy of a scarce book of liquid recipe. NOTE: Library of Congress cites a 1934 issue of this title by Dodd Mead, of which 11 libraries worldwide own copies. Crockett must have taken back publication the following year. 5 libraries worldwide hold this particular edition. "Giving the correct recipes for Five Hundred Cocktails and Mixed Drinks known and served at the world's most famouns brass rail before prohibition, together with more than One Hundred Established Formulas for cocktails and other beverages, originated while prohibition was in effect. The whole flavored with dashes of history mixed in a shaker of anecdote and served with a chaser of illuminative information..."

THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION. A 6-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. A first hand account of an attack on the village of Zimapan by "rebels" [Zapatistas].

Zimapan, Hidalgo, Mexico, August 7, 1935. - - sc - Six pages consisting of over 1,000 words penned on both sides of 3 sheets of 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/8 inch wide buff-colored paper. In a lengthy letter James H. Armstrong, the author of this account, responds after reading a book which Mrs. McDougall has sent him. The book, Rosa E. King's "Tempest Over Mexico" which had just been published that year, has stirred up Armstrong's memories and feelings. He doesn't view the "rebels" (The Liberation Army of the South, known as the Zapatistas) with as much fondness "She rather idealizes Zapata, though strangely she makes no mention of his brother who accompanied him all the time, and glosses over the terrible cruelty of the Zapatists." He goes on to describe, at length, an attack by the Zapatistas "When the town was attacked by the rebels for the first time, I had advance information from one of the rebel sympathizers who worked for us, so was not surprised when a group surrounded the town and demanded that the small garrison surrender or else the place would be taken by 'sangre y fuego' - 'blood and fire!' The town authorities decided to resist and the women and children of the principal families were gathered into the big house." He goes on to describe that night and the "all-day attack" which followed until "through their scouts the rebels received word that a relief column was coming, so they retired and that unpleasant spell was over." Describing a subsequent attack, he writes of joining the "Jefe Politico, a very good friend" who'd organized a little band of volunteers to escort the women as they would all try to reach the next town. The group was overtaken and, to protect the women, surrendered to the Zapatistas. "As a foreigner, I was deputed to approach with a white flag and arrange terms. One of the women gave me her white petticoat to flaunt and up the hill I went." Signed "Jas. H. Armstrong". The pages are folded once horizontally and twice vertically for mailing. There is some minor soiling with creasing to the right edge. Very good. A very entertaining first hand account of an event during the Mexican Revolution. The writer, James H. Armstrong was an American superintendent of the Hidalgo Copper Mining & Smelting Company in Zimapan, Hildago. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Zagreb, . 1935 - Lithograph in colour, on 11 sheets, unjoined and untrimmed, Complete as issued, would join in an irregular shape as intended (Very Good, exquisite printing quality, sharp and clean with wide margins to all sheets, one sheet with longer repaired tear, margins slighty dusty, with tiny tears), measurements: each sheet 60 x 72 cm (23.5 x 28.5 inches); if joined would form a map of irregular dimensions, maximum approximately: 220 x 240 cm (86.5 x 94.5 inches). Exceedingly rare – the official ‘master plan’ of Zagreb recording every significant detail of the city during its historical apogee of the 1930s, being a gargantuan 11 sheet map, exclusively issued for the use of government administrators and leading building developers, employing unusually fine chromolithography. This colossal map is the finest general cartographic record of Zagreb from the period of its historical apogee, during the 1920s and ‘30s. It is the official ‘master plan’ of the city drafted by Zagreb’s urban planning department and printed by means of the highest quality chromolithography for the select use of administrators and leading private land developers. The map was produced in extremely small numbers, and was not made available to the public for purchase (thus explaining the lack of imprint, etc.). The map served as the official basis for major urban planning decisions during an unprecedented period of explosive physical, economic and population growth. The map provides a panoptic view of all of Zagreb, labelling every street, square, park, significant feature and, most impressively, every building (noting each by its street number), as well as the limits of every cadastral lot. The ‘Legenda’ (Legend), located below the title on Sheet 1, explains the colour coding of the features on the map. The classifications labelled ‘zgrade’ (buildings) include: ‘privatne’ (privately owned), coloured pink; ‘javne gradske op?ine’ (public, municipally owned), coloured red; ‘državne i ostale’ (public, state and other), represented in grey. Other features described include: ‘šume’ (woods), coloured pale green; ‘perivoji’ (parks), in light green; and ‘vode’ (water), coloured in blue. Beyond the colour coding, virtually all of the features are accompanied by additional labelling. In addition to being large scale, the map is very well designed, showcasing an enormous amount of information with an elegant and practical clarity of presentation. The map is arguably one of the finest maps of Zagreb ever produced, and indeed, of any major European city from the period. The map captures the entire city during what was its historical apology, during the 1920s and ‘30’s, following three generation of transformative change. The ovoid outlines of the medieval city are still clearly visible on Sheets 4 & 7. Until the middle of the 19th Century, Zagreb was largely confined to this small area, being nothing more than a regional centre with population of barely 17,000 (in 1851). However, beginning in the 1850s, spurred by the Croatian National Revival, Zagreb grew steadily in population and wealth, expanding beyond the old town. The railway arrived in 1862, the gasworks were established in 1863 and a modern water system was created from 1878. This spurred industrial growth, and the formation of the new working-class and industrial districts to the west and south of the old city. It also saw improvements to the large plazas extending out of the old city, as well as the construction of grand public edifices, in the Austro-Hungarian style. Indeed, Zagreb acquired monumental architecture, arranged along massive open spaces, akin to Vienna and Budapest. Most notably, the era also saw the re-development of Ban Jela?i? Square, to this day, the heart of Zagreb. SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION. References: Nacionalna i sveu?ilišna knjižnica u Zagrebu [National and University Library in Zagreb]: NSK 000237054.       [Various locations in and around Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, 1935. Seventy-eight mounted silver gelatin photographs, either 3 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches or 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Oblong octavo photograph album, paper-covered boards, string-bound. Front cover detached, covers and spine chipped. Some album pages chipped, but photographs remain largely untouched. Very good. An absorbing collection of photographs capturing American military life in Hawaii during the first half of the 20th century, with the great majority of the photographs captioned in ink on the album pages. The unnamed photographer and compiler of the photographs apparently served at the Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, as he includes several photographs of the base, including the "Boxing Bowl." He also records other notable locations around Honolulu, including the Waipahu Sugar Mill, the Kilaeua Crater, Japanese Temple, the Mid-Pacific Railway wreck, Kapiolani Park, the Honolulu railway station, Sand Island, the naval destroyer JEANNE D'ARC, Sampans Haleiwa Bay, the Monoa Hotel, the Waipahi Sugar Mill, Diamondhead and Kahala Bay, Waikiki Beach, several shots of volcanoes and lava formations, and more. He even includes a shot of the pack mule he presumably used in his wanderings. Hawaiian photographs are scarce in the market, and continually more desirable, especially with holographic notations, like those present in this intriguing album.

Autograph letter signed "Lehár Fr" to the celebrated soprano Maria Jeritza

In blue ink on the verso of a postal card with unidentified motif; printed credits to "Phot. Ing. F Mayer." Dated September 29, 1935. In German (with translation). Lehár thanks his correspondent (who is not named but may be identified by circumstantial evidence as the soprano Maria Jeritza) for her interpretation of the song "Liebe du Himmel auf Erden" (Love, you heaven on earth) from his operetta Paganini. He is looking forward to seeing her as Tosca soon. He announces that he will travel to Paris imminently to attend a performance of his operetta Schön ist die Welt: "Still under the spell of the song 'Liebe du Himmel auf Erden' so wonderfully rendered by you I am writing you this letter, and I thank you cordially for the artistic enjoyment... Early next week I will travel to Paris. Schön ist die Welt is going to be performed at the Theâtre Paisé Lyrique." From the collection of Maria Jeritza. Slightly worn, creased and smudged; faint red ink stains. "Liebe, du Himmel auf Erden" is an aria from Lehár's operetta Paganini (1926), made into a film in 1934. Maria Jeritza performed the song as part of a shortwave broadcast for an American audience in 1935. Lehár's operetta Schön ist die Welt was first performed in 1930 (a revision of his earlier work Endlich allein, 1914). Like other successful composers of the era, Léhar was close to Maria Jeritza (1887-1982), the most celebrated soprano from the final years of the Habsburg empire. She appeared regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1921 on.
