        I Am Your Brother

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1935). First American Edition. Hardcover. [spine moderately turned, tiny chunk out of cloth of front hinge near base of spine, light soiling to page edges, internally very clean; jacket well-worn with various small tears/creases, minor paper loss at several corners, large chunk missing at base of spine, soiling to rear panel]. Very uncommon novel by a somewhat enigmatic author (who may or may not have died in World War II). Set in London, it tells the story of Julian, a tormented young composer who discovers that his late mother had for years been keeping his monstrously deformed brother (apparently the result of some kind of artificial-insemination experiment gone awry) confined in the attic of their house, feeding him raw meat and reading him fairy stories. After Mom gets hit by a bus, the responsibility for Brother now falls on Julian, who (being of delicate and artistic temperament) is already not exactly the most stable individual on the planet. A very strange novel (described by one writer as "a little like ‘The Dunwich HorrorÂ’ with a London setting"), it was quite a sensation in its day, but was apparently never reprinted and is now nearly impossible to find. J. Maclaren-Ross, writing about his encounter with Marlowe in the late 1930s, said the author told him that the novel "originated as a bedtime story told to the children of Sir Roderick and Lady Jones [Enid Bagnold, to whom the book is dedicated] while staying with them in the country." The author also spent a little time in Hollywood in the mid-1930's, where he made some minor (uncredited) contributions to the screenplay of DAVID COPPERFIELD. This may not be an especially pretty example of the rare dust jacket, but at least the ultra-creepy front-panel illustration is intact. (Note that while the jacket art is uncredited -- unless the artist's signature appears on a piece that's now missing -- it seems obviously the work of Rex Whistler.) .

        Totentanzfigur. Bronze.

The Note-Book. Called the Rossetti Manuscript. Edited by Geoffrey Keynes.

London: The Nonesuch Press, 1935 - Octavo. Original blue buckram, title label to spine, grey endpapers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. A superb copy with the jacket only slightly creased at the extremities and with three closed tears. First edition thus, number 29 of 650 copies, with the very scarce dust jacket. This fine Nonesuch Press edition constitutes the first facsimile printing of Blake's famous notebook, known as the "Rossetti Manuscript" since it was acquired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1847. Selections from the manuscript, with some over-liberal alterations, were published in Gilchrist's Life of Blake 1863, but it was only when the great Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes had it photographed in full in 1924 that "an accurate and final text" was published in the Nonesuch Press edition of Blake's Writings in 1925. This edition presents the full text, with its many integrated drawings, for the first time in photographic (as well as letterpress) facsimile. [Attributes: First Edition]

Handwritten diary and daily planner for February 1935

Knihtiskárna Prometheus, Prague 1935 - 12mo (12.8 × 8.9 cm). Staple-stitched printed wrappers; 42 leaves, printed rectos and versos. Filled out in ink and pencil. Very good. Small daily planner for February 1935 of Otakar Mrkvi?ka (1898-1957), the Czech painter, illustrator, art critic and editor, one of the founding members of the Czech avant-garde group Dev?tsil. Mrkvi?ka was a key figure of Czech avant-garde life, designing many constructivist wrapper designs by himself as well as collaboratively with Karel Teige (1900-1951). In the 1930s, he primarily worked on his paintings, produced numerous political and satirical caricatures and worked as an editor of the newspaper "Lidové noviny." The planner features numerous holograph notes about Mrkvi?ka's daily appointments, payments received, as well as longer diary entries and notes for planned works. Apart from more mundane records, he describes readings, gatherings and all-night parties with notable contemporaries such as Josef ?apek, Karel Nový, Vladislav Van?ura, and Eduard Bass. February 1935 was also important due to Mrkvi?ka's journey to Moscow, which he describes on numerous pages. Given his central role in Czech avant-garde graphic design and intellectual life in the 1920s, it is striking that Mrkvi?ka's life and work are relatively little documented. Included is Mrkvi?ka's personal calling card, listing him as a painter and editor of "Lidové noviny" [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Call It Sleep

1935. First Edition . ROTH, Henry. Call It Sleep. New York: Robert O. Ballou, (1935). Octavo, original light blue cloth, uncut, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2800.First edition, second printing issued one year after the first, of RothÂ’s magnum opus, in scarce colorful unrestored dust jacket.“One of the ‘greatest achievements of American writing this century” Henry RothÂ’s magisterial novel about David Schearl, a young Jewish immigrant in turn-of-the-century New York, is also hailed as the finest Jewish-American novel of the age (Parker & Kermode, 181). Critic Robert Alter describes “Call It Sleep as ‘together with The Sound and the FuryÂ…. the fullest American assimilation of Joyce.” It is a timeless work both poetic and profoundly honest in its shifting rhythms of Yiddish, English and Polish. “If David is a Jewish Ulysses,Â’ writes Murray Baumgarten, ‘he is also a Yiddish Stephen Daedalus” (Wirth-Nesher, 77-8). On publication, Call It Sleep received high praise but was neglected for decades. In 1956, however, Alfred Kazin and Leslie Fielder both cited his novel at a symposium on unfairly ignored American writing, and by 1964 a new edition became a bestseller, praised by Irving Howe as a luminous work with “the quality of a dream and, if it describes a world of vivid fragments, it also evokes with relentless accuracy the gigantic fears, extreme attachments and dreadful misconceptions of childhood” (Parker and Kermode, 181). Second printing; second-state dust jacket with Minneapolis Star blurb. Text fresh and clean, light foxing, minor spine toning to original cloth; scarce colorful unrestored dust jacket with slight edge-wear, chipping to spine ends affecting “Call” and publisherÂ’s name. A highly desirable extremely good copy.

"Seven Pillars, for all its unevenness of interest and quality, and its frequent straining for effect, is a great and memorable work [Churchill ranked it with 'the greatest books ever written in the English language.'] . . . Novelistic in many ways, in its creation of character most obviously, and in its imaginative qualities, [it] often tread[s] a fine line between purple prose and hauntingly luminous description, between accounts of monotonous camel rides or Bedouin encampments and passages of great spirituality and insight . . . That Seven Pillars is no straightforward historical or military record is clear (though its skilful and knowledgeable assimilation of historical, military and diplomatic background is equally so). Subsequent researches have shown it to be likely that Lawrence embellished the story in places to give his own part and prowess greater prominence. But . . . there is no doubt that his achievements as a military commander were remarkable . . .         Fine and attractive photograph by The Misses Selby, New York, (Anne, 1906-2001, pioneering American Aviator, author, and wife of CHARLES, 1902-1974, American Aviator, First to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic in 1927)

1935 - signed, inscribed and dated 'For Elsie Whateley from Anne Lindbergh', showing her seated, three quarter length, almost full face, with her son Charles Augustus on her knee, (born 22nd June 1930, kidnapped 1st March 1932), she is looking down to show him something with its cover turned back, he is in a little shirt and shorts, holding a ball, his attention caught by something to the left, Mrs Lindbergh is in a print dress with short flounced sleeves, 6¼" x 6¼" circle in margins 7¾" x 7¼", June The Lindberghs were married in 1929 and Charles jr was born on 22nd June 1930. Elsie Whateley and her husband Ollie, both from England, joined the household as cook and butler. On the night of the kidnapping, Ollie and Lindbergh searched the woods round the house, and Anne, Elsie, and Betty Gow the nursemaid, all the rooms and closets. Charlie's body was not found in the woods near Hopewell till 12th May 1932. The police focused solely on Richard Hauptmann as alleged kidnapper, insisting that there was only one set of foot prints, even though a second had been found leading away from the house. So at Hauptmann's trial, 2nd January - 13th February 1935, his counsel, Edward J. Reilly, could only advance the theory that the kidnapping was 'an inside job'. The three women were closely cross-examined, the nursemaid most of all. Elsie testified that the shirt found on Charlie was the one they had put on him the night he had disappeared. Following the guilty verdict, Hauptmann appealed (2nd May 1935). Anne wrote to her mother saying that Elsie had not been back to England since Ollie had died, and that she wished to go home. Elsie in fact was Anne's last immediate contact with her son and this photograph, taken at most a few months before the kidnapping, will have been a gift at this time.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom [No 363 of 750 Copies]

Without the card slipcase. An excellent copy, top grain rubbed at spine ends, light fading and occasional spotting to cloth, otherwise virtually pristine and apparently unread (many pages unopened). O'Brien A40. National Geographic's 100 Greatest Adventure books. Third [i.e. second complete] edition, preceded by the incomplete "Oxford Times Edition of 1922 (eight copies only were printed) and the rare privately printed "Subscriber's Edition" of 1927 (limited to 211 copies, with only 170 copies complete), the first publicly available edition. But . . . there is no doubt that his achievements as a military commander were remarkable . . . " (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Dojmy z SSSR [Impressions of the USSR]

Brno: Exod, [1935]. First pocket edition. Paperback. 136pp. Sextodecimo in wraps. Short tear to spine at top, 1/2" tear to front hinge at foot creasing to rear wrap and to front wrap corners; interior is clean and tight. Illustrated with 9 drawings by the author. Curiously, while this copy has one of the woodcuts from the original edition as its cover illustration, the nine illustrations within are pen-and-ink drawings, not woodcuts. The text appears to have been printed from the same type as the third edition, although it does not follow the same pagination. An illustrated account of the author's travels to Leningrad, St. Petersburg, Moskow, Kharkiv, and Kiev. Bocho áková-Dittrichová also devotes a chapter each to a collective farm and the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station. Helena Bocho áková-Dittrichová (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist, and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bocho áková-Dittrichová's unpublished wordless novel Malí ka Na Cestách [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Franz Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bocho áková-Dittrichová published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bocho áková-Dittrichová," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available.
