Faulkner, William
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929 New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929. First edition, first printing. Publisher's quarter cream cloth, lettered in black, black and white patterned paper-covered boards, matching black and white coated endpapers, top edge stained black, fore edge untrimmed; lacking the original dust jacket. A very good copy with some wear and toning to extremities, minor tearing to cloth at spine ends, light toning to page edges, and offsetting to pp. 370-371 from something laid in that has since been removed, contemporary ownership signature to front pastedown. An attractive copy. From the library of Pulitzer Prize winning author Kenneth Silverman. The Sound and the Fury is Faulkner's fourth novel and features the Compson family, a once respected aristocratic family that has fallen into hard times, both financially and socially, in the 20th century. Like many of the author's works, The Sound and the Fury is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County in Mississippi, based on Faulkner's childhood experiences in Oxford. The novel is primarily written in stream-of-consciousness style and each of its four sections is narrated by and/or focuses on a different family member, each of which is affected by the family's plight in his or her own way. In Faulkner's non-chronological plot, the story is interspersed with characters' asynchronous thoughts and flashbacks. The Sound and the Fury is one of Faulkner's most highly acclaimed novels and played a major role in his receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature. Chiefly a biographer, Profess … [Click Below for Full Description]

ONOFRI, Arturo
Gallipoli Memories; First Athenian Memories; Greek Memories; Aegean Memories. 4 volumes, octavo. Original cloth (vols. I to III black, vol. IV red), spines lettered in gilt, top edge of vol. IV red. With the dust jackets. Photographic frontispieces. 7 photographic plates in vol. 4. Bookplate of The Book Society to front pastedown of vol. 1. Spines slightly rolled, light foxing to edges of text blocks, spine of vol. 4 faded. An excellent set with slightly nicked dust jackets with toned spines, joints just starting. First editions, first impressions, throughout, and scarce thus: Greek Memories (1932), which along with First Athenian Memories (1931) recounted Mackenzie's experiences as director of the Aegean intelligence services in Syria, was withdrawn from sale and saw the author prosecuted under the Official Secrets Act in a "famous - frequently farcical - trial at the Old Bailey" (ODNB). Greek Memories contains a contemporary newspaper clipping relating this scandal pasted onto the front free endpaper. As a consequence of the trial, Greek Memories was not widely published until 1939. Lengel describes Gallipoli Memories (1929), "This memoir is full of odd characters and tricky situations, and reads like a novel".

MILNE, A. A.
London: Methuen & Co, 1929. London: Methuen & Co,, 1929. With decorations by E. H. Shephard. Octavo. Publisher's deluxe limp green crushed morocco, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Spine sunned and with split at head. A very good copy with bright contents. Nineteenth impression, in the publisher's extra-deluxe green morocco. This binding was produced in very small numbers following the success of the deluxe calf editions. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

ONOFRI, Arturo
Zworykin, V. [ Vladimir ]
New York: Institute of Radio Engineers, 1929. First Edition. Wraps. Good. First Edition. [1]-15 pages plus wrappers. 6 x 9 inches. Printed white wrappers. Creased vertically as if mailed. Small piece of paper adhered to front wrapper. Minor soiling overall. Wraps. The original manuscript of this article was received by the Institute of Radio Engineers November 24, 1928. It is here "reprinted from a forthcoming issue of the Proceedings of the Institute of Radio Engineers". Note on page [1] indicates the price of this piece to non-members was 50 cents. It was eventually published in the Proceedings of the IRE, Volume 17, issue 3, pages 536 - 550. Zworykin's first publication (davidsarnoff historical site), and the rare offprint issue, printed BEFORE it's first journal publication. David Sarnoff (RCA) and Zworykin met just before Zworykin presented this paper in New York. The results of the meeting were to be important, for Zworykin detailed the problems that he would have to fix in order to create a working television system, and Sarnoff committed to build it, given Zworykin's estimate of 2 years and 100,000 dollars. "All right, it's worth it" he said. This offprint details some of the work that represents a continuum of technological progress from the equivalent of what we know as a fax machine today to what would become the television. As such it is an important step towards a medium that would change the way that the world received it's news, entertainment, and connected with each other. Abramson, Zworykin, Pioneer of Television.
