JONES, David, illustrator - Samuel Taylor COLERIDGE
Douglas Cleverdon for the Fanfare Press, Bristol. 4to (315 x 248 mm; 12 1/4 x 10 inches). 10 copper-engraved plates by Jones. Original quarter gilt-lettered cream cloth, green boards. Spine slightly soiled, light wear at extremities. LIMITED EDITION, number 265 of 480 total copies. "David Jones (1895-1974) produced a set of copperplate engravings for the 1929 edition. They usually contain notable elements of Christian symbolism - the priest with his censer, for example, in this illustration for the wedding scene - but a strong Celtic influence is also apparent in the beautiful, simple elegance of his figures. During the late 1920s, Jones stayed with the family of the artist Eric Gill and became engaged to one of Gill's daughters, Petra. Her long neck and high forehead became standard features in his illustrations of women" (British Library). The Artist and the Book 136; Ransom, Cleverdon 7. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

WOOLF Virginia
1929. Limited edition. Number 40 of 100 copies signed by Woolf, reserved for sale in Great Britain, from a total edition of 450. Tall 8vo., original deep red cloth, lettered in gilt. London/New York, The Hogarth Press/The Fountain Press. Woolf?s seminal feminist essay, in which she argues that ?a woman must have money and a room of her own to write fiction?, in a literary tradition dominated by men. The essay was based on lectures given by Woolf to two Cambridge societies. After finishing Orlando, Woolf wanted to ?write a history, say of Newnham or the women?s movement, in the same vein.? Continuing her experiments with ?fact? and ?fiction?, she writes a short biography of Shakespeare?s sister as if she had existed and been bestowed with the same artistic capabilities as her brother. As she puts it herself in the essay, ?fiction here is likely to contain more truth than fact? Spine slightly sunned, otherwise a fine copy. Kirkpatrick A12a. PROUST Marcel & DAUDET Lucien
[Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely scarce, with no other copies recorded at auction or in commerce. "Tinbergen studied physics and mathematics at the University of Leiden under the supervision of the physicist Paul Ehrenfest, a personal friend of Albert Einstein. He joined the Social Democratic Labour Party in 1922 Since Tinbergen felt that he could serve the socialist cause better as an economist than as a physician, he engaged in the study of economics through self-learning. His PhD thesis (1929), on the similarity between minimum problems in physics and economics, marks this transition" (Besomi, p. 429). In 1969 Tinbergen was the first to obtain the Nobel Prize for economics. See Daniele Besomi (ed.), Crises and Cycles in Economic Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias (Routledge, 2012). Munari, Bruno]
— PROVENIENZA: Fulvio M. Rosso (Sotheby’s 1985); collezione privata (cat. Futurismo Gorizia 2009). — Censimento istituzionale: Mic Faenza; Wolfson Miami. — BIBLIOGRAFIA: 1929: Mostra di trentatre artisti futuristi, Milano, Galleria Pesaro; 1982: Crispolti, Ceramica futurista (Faenza) p. 112 (es. Waltham, Saint Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press, 1929. 4 volumes, small folio. On hand-made paper. Wood-engraved border illustrations by Eric Gill, initials printed in red, blue and black. Publisher's niger morocco-backed patterned boards by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, top edge gilt, others uncut. One of 485 from a total edition of 500, this copy number 128: one of the most acclaimed and beautiful books of the private press movement. Printed by Robert & Moira Gibbings with excellent illustrations by Gill (the text from the edition of the Rev. Walter W. Skeat), this is one of the finest works to come out of the Golden Cockerel Press. The bibliography of the press describes this set quite simply as "beautiful books". Publication of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales followed on from the highly successful edition of Troilus and Criseyde, the first of the great books produced by the Press, which Gill and Gibbings had worked on intensively for publication in 1927. Publication of The Canterbury Tales was regarded as a major literary event and was widely covered in the press throughout the four-year period. It proved a profitable title for the Press and one that enhanced its reputation. Sanford, Chanticleer, 63; Sister Elizabeth Marie, Eric Gill, p. 31; Gill 281; Cave and Manson pp.53-55.
