Emily Ellsworth Ford Skeel
New York: 1929. All three volumes were printed and bound by The Plimpton Press in a beautiful tan, blue and brick paper with tan cloth spines and a leather text block on the spine. There is some rubbing on the corners and the leather is oxidized with some chipping. Volume I is the bibliography and this copy is inscribed by the editor Emily Ellsworth to her sister on the ffep. This is #67 of 200. All of the interiors are spotless. Volume II has an actual piece of Parson Weems writing tipped-in up front. Three hundred copies of II and III were printed and this set is #45 and signed. Mason Locke Weems (October 11, 1759 - May 23, 1825), usually referred to as Parson Weems, was an American book agent and author who wrote the first biography of George Washington immediately after his death. He was the source of some of the apocryphal stories about Washington. The tale of the cherry tree ("I cannot tell a lie, I did it with my little hatchet") is included in the fifth edition of The Life of Washington (1809 imprint, originally published 1800), a bestseller that depicted Washington's virtues and was intended to provide a morally instructive tale for the youth of the young nation. Langue: Français [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
