Buck, Adriaan de.
Leiden, Eduard Ijdo, 1929. Crown quarto. Pp. 29. Original printed wrappers; small inscription. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare original of De Buck's oration, addressed at the Leiden University on June 5, 1929 on the occasion of his first lecture there. His doctoral thesis was presented at Leiden seven years earlier, almost to the day. Published privately by the now defunct Leiden printers firm of IJdo. Adriaan de Buck (1892-1959) studied Egyptology under Sethe, Erman and Möller to become later one of the foremost Egyptologists of his time. In 1922 he gained a theological doctorate at the University of Leiden, for which he wrote a thesis on the Primeval Hill as a concept in Egyptian religion, "a work which has exercised a profound influence on all later studies on the Heliopolitan theology". (Dawson & Uphill). In 1925 he was asked by Gardiner and Breasted to edit an extensive and fully comprehensive edition of the Coffin Texts to be published by the Oriental Institute of Chicago. At the time of his death seven great volumes of texts had appeared, and part of his other great work of translating and commenting on them had also been completed, "an achievement rarely equalled by one individual in the field of Egyptology". Beinlich-Seeber 4218.

Carnap, Rudolf:
Wien, J. Springer, 1929. VI + 114 S. Priv. Lwd. späterer Zeit, mit aufgezogener RTitelei. EA. - Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung, Bd. 2. - R. leicht berieben, leichte Gbrsp. [Click Below for Full Description]

MURRAY Stella Wolfe.; HEATH Lady
1929. Illustrations. First edition. 8vo., cloth. London, John Long Ltd. Inscribed on the front free endpaper 'With Stella Wolfe Murray's Compliments'. Bookplate to the front pastedown of John Lloyd, printed with his address of Walton Street, Oxford, possibly the John Lloyd who was chief designer at Armstrong-Whitworth, but we can find no evidence he lived at the address on the bookplate. Not exactly co-written, the two authors both contribute chapters. Stella Wolfe Murray addressed herself to potential female aviators: ?I do not advocate neglecting your parents: honour and succour them, especially in their old age, but don?t stay at home and do housework when you long, body and soul, to fly to the uttermost ends of the earth, there to find your mission in life and your gift to the world? Murray, an author and journalist with a passion for aviation, who also edited an anthology 'The Poetry of Flight', was the first female journalist to be allowed to sit in the press gallery in the British Parliament. Her co-contributor, Lady Mary Heath, could more than hold her own in an age of daring female pilots, being the first woman to parachute from an aeroplane (landing in the middle of a football match), flying in an open cockpit aeroplane from Cape Town to London, and was also an Olympic athlete. Top board lightly spotted, endpapers glue stained, probably from tape attached to a now absent dust jacket, still a fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Tsao Hsueh-Chin, Kao Ngoh, [Translated by] Chi-Chen Wang
New York: Doubleday, 1929. 1st American edition (in English) of the all-time best selling Chinese novel. A laid-in clipping has offset at page 208 else very good in a price clipped dustjacket with chips, tears, and neat strengthening, but a good jacket, and yes it's flawed, but the old anvil laughs at many broken hammers, and it's the only one we've had (the cleanest shirt in the hamper) because this book has been hard to find in jacket since the ark docked. A novel written in, and set in, the 18th century (Qing dynasty) about conflicts undermining a sizable household, their rise and fall, contrasted alongside their loyalties to, and their plots against, one another, a microcosm that often mirrors the macrocosm of Qing Imperial politics, its ethics, customs, education, religion, economics, laws, culture, and intrigues, during the last period of China's feudal era. Very good / good.

Stephensen, P. R.
London: The Scholartis Press, 1929. First edition, 8vo, pp. [4], 27, [1]; original black wrappers (loose, but present), printed label on upper cover; very good. This copy inscribed "to Albert Parsons Loeb, a trivial but sincere token of affection, P. R. Stephenson, London 1929" and additionally inscribed "To the same from the bloke that done the drawings, Hal Collins." A printed note on the verso of the half-title notes that "there are also 25 copies signed by the author and the artist..." This is likely one of that issue. A comic poem about two naughty women who wear pants and read bad literature.

VAN DRUTEN, John
John Day, New York, 1929. First American edition. Fine in near fine, slightly spine-faded dustwrapper with a tiny nick at the crown. Van Druten adapted this novel from his own play, rather risqué at the time, about a professor's wife who falls in love with a student. The play had been banned in his native Britain, and the author immigrated to America for its production and stayed to become a citizen. He also co-wrote the early talkie film version with Madelaine Carroll and Frank Lawton. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
