Davis, William Heath
John Howell, 1929. Hardcover. This is copy Number 167 of the Argonaut Edition, autographed by both publisher and editor, and of which but one hundred copies in all, numbered 151 to 250 inclusive, have been printed, and into which have been bound the following: "Page of the Author's manuscript. A Document relating to William Heath Davis. Photostats of Important Historical Prints and Letters. And the Mayor's Proclamation of April 18, 1906, issued on the day of the great fire and earthquake in which catastrophe the original manuscript of 'Seventy-Five Years in California' was lost as explained in the Publisher's Preface in this volume." An enlarged version of Davis' Sixty Years in California (1889), rated preferable to its predecessor. As bibliographer Gary Kurutz observed, if Harris Newmark's recollection could be acclaimed as the "Pepys Diary of Los Angeles, " the highly detailed recollection of noted California pioneer and merchant William Heath Davis (1822-1909) could rightly claim that appellation for the entire state. Edited and with an historical foreword and index by Douglas S. Watson. Color frontispiece and endpapers, with photographs, illustrations, and a folding facsimile. Quarto. Printed on "Utopian" paper by The Lakeside Press. Original blue paper-covered boards over a linen spine, with a printed paper spine label (duplicate label tipped in at the rear). Typical offsetting opposite the proclamation and folding facsimile. Ink gift inscription to the half-title. The corners are showing a bit; else a very good copy in the rather uncommon dust jacket, which is rather … [Click Below for Full Description]

Howard Lee McBain
NEW YORK: THE LIVING CONSTITUTION by Howard Le McBain Softcover 1929 The Macmillan Company New York The Workers Education Press Designed by Eugene V. Connett. We respect the integrity of you, the reader here...understanding that if you have found this book, you would have Knowledge of its history. So, we will keep the description as "on point" as possible. Cover on this book, showing some light dirt/slight ageing on the edges, and spine. Binding is tight, and we did not open front cover all the way for the Title page scan. The back cover opens a bit easier. Gently paging through all the pages, 284, with Index and advertisements. Text showing no writing, or tears. Only page 38 shows a small upper left corner wrinkle, not indicative of an actual bend, present nonetheless. Lightly and evenly aged. Perhaps in the "lightly read" category. VERY GOOD CONDITION, for its age. The photo is a Press photo. Pictured on the left is Howard Lee McBain and James Speyer on the right. They were attending a dinner at the Economic Club of New York, at the Hotel Astor, February 9th, 1933. The History of this book is as follows. Our late Uncle was a Concert Organ Musician over 65 years. He lived to be 98. He would perform at many a Church, Theater, Temple, and various Corporate Events. He met many people, from many walks of life. He had a penchant for collecting books, and was always given them as thank you gifts for his performances. This book was given to our Uncle from his sister, Harriette Ruby, signed inside in small fountain pen. Chicago's 1st Mayor Daley, gave this to her for doing some ty … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fitzgerald has captioned them by hand in ink, noting the healthy stomach as "At 22", and the stomach of an alcoholic as "at 32" (Fitzgerald's age at the time). He adds a postscript: "The resemblance is said to be excellent". The card dates from the month when the Fitzgeralds had moved abroad again, to Paris, where Zelda had her heart set on learning ballet. From his street address, we identify the recipient as Robert Newman (1912-2009), later chief librarian at the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield, Mass. At the time of this postcard Newman was still in his final year at Pittsfield High School, so the morbid humour of Fitzgerald's reply may have come as some surprise.

The reason I am so keen to hang on to my veto is that BITTER SWEET, having been massacred once by the films, should not I feel be massacred again. Unfortunately I was away in the East the last time it was done and I could not prevent them mis-casting and ruining my story. Sometime during my rehearsal period ... we might have a snappy little lunch and discuss the whole business ...", 1 side 4to., 1 Burton Mews headed paper, 10th January some damage to the top edge not affecting the text Bitter Sweet is an operetta in three acts, with book, music and lyrics by Noël Coward. The story, set in 19th century and early 20th century England and Austria-Hungary, centres on a young woman's elopement with her music teacher. The show had a long run in the West End from 1929 to 1931, and a more modest one on Broadway in 1929–1930 and was twice adapted for the cinema.

Constantin-Weyer Maurice 1881 1964
Prise d'Alger. Prise de Bône. To his third wife, Natalja, on fighting against the AKhRR (Assotsiatsia Khudozhnikov Revolutsionnoi Rossii - Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia), appointments with [Kirill Ivanovich] Shutko (with whom he was talking about Dziga Vertov), Archangelski, M. P. Kristi, and Aleksei Gan, who wanted to publish two essays of him. [...] I think I have already mentioned everything. I will get my renumeration on Monday and go to buy the tickets then; I expect to be in Leningrad on Wednesday [...]" (transl. from the Russian original). - In her postscript, Malevich's daughter Una (who was at the age of nine at that time) reports how happy she was that her father had come to celebrate Christmas with her. - K. Leo Tolstoy
Books are in Near Fine condition with sun damaged dust Jackets. Accumulated dust over 80-90 years.have left the top of all volume's pages darkened. Tolstoy Centenary Edition From Oxford University Press - Complete Works in 21 Vols. This set is a very rare find. Twenty-one volumes, ca. 10,000pp., mulberry buckram. Published in the years 1929 through 1938. A near fine, excellent set. Accumulated dust over 80-90 years have left the top of each volume's pages darkened. Magisterial in its scope but pleasingly reader-friendly, incorporating the introductory two-volume Life by Aylmer Maude authorised by Tolstoy himself, and introductions to the separate works by authors including Galsworthy, Walpole and Wells. Complete with the bookmark listing the main characters in War and Peace. The dust jackets are sun bleached on the spines, but have a solid cream front and back cover with some foxing. DJs are in most cases torn or chipped, but you probably won't find another set with the DJs extant. The DJs have done their job and all bindings are beautiful with no damage outside slight bruising to the top of the spine in a very few cases. More pictures available upon request.
