Bruno, Antonio]
[Catania], s. n. (Tip. Sorace e Siracusa), 1929, settembre, Edizione originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1929. New York: Harcourt Brace,, 1929. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front cover in red, top edge red, others untrimmed. With the Arthur Hawkins designed dust jacket. Spine minimally rolled, touch of wear to spine ends and bottom edge, faint toning to fore edge; else a near-fine copy in the remarkably bright jacket with sunned spine and a couple of tiny chips to spine ends and tips. First edition, first printing. Sartoris is a revised version of Faulkner's Flags in the Dust, the full text of which was not published until 1973. It was the first of Faulkner's tales set in Yoknapatawpha County, and introduces many of the characters that appear in his later works. Due to the fragile paper stock used for the dust jacket copies in such good condition are notably uncommon.

Frederic Prokosch
Hastings-on-Hudson: Self-published. Condition: Very Good binding / Signed. Poems, divided into four sections: Amores, Elegies; Pastorals and Sonnets; a bound typescript consisting of 41 unnumbered leaves. "This edition of these poems was made in the Summer of 1929. It is limited to 4 copies, numbered and signed by the author, this being no. 4". The title page has a drawing of a stylized willow tree in red pen; there are a couple of corrections in pen, presumably by Prokosch. A true rarity by this rather elusive and mysterious literary figure (and forger of some of his own productions -- the so-called "Butterfly Books"): "All the facts in Who's Who, or whatever, are so utterly meaningless. .. my real life have been subversive, anarchic, vicious, lonely and capricious" [see Robert Greenfield, Dreamer's Journey: The Life and Writings of Frederick Prokosch (2010), p. 17]. Bound by Prokosch, rather rudimentarily, in marbled boards backed in blue cloth with a hand-lettered paper label; the hinges have been discreetly reinforced. Of the four copies, we locate one at the Beinecke Library, and one copy at UCLA. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Milne, A. A. (Alan Alexander); Grahame, Kenneth
London: Methuen & Co, 1929 Limited edition of 200 copies printed on handmade paper and signed by the authors to the limitation page, this copy being number 135. Publisher's quarter pale blue cloth and white paper-covered boards, white paper title label to front board. A very good copy, boards slightly bowed and with some soiling, light wear and toning to extremities, interior very clean. Overall, a handsome copy with the two author's signatures. Toad of Toad Hall is the first adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (1908) into a play. Milne, a great admirer of Grahame's children's literature and The Wind in the Willows in particular, selected parts of the original text - mainly the adventures of the titular character, Mr. Toad - which he thought would be best adapted to the stage. He admits, however, in his introduction that this meant he "left out all the best parts of the book" which "for that, if he has any knowledge of the theatre, Mr. Grahame will thank me." Toad of Toad Hall, which included six songs by Harold Fraser-Simon, was first performed at the Lyric Theatre in London on December 17, 1929.. Signed by Authors. Hard Cover. Very Good. Mark Twain
Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1929. This is the highly respected and most favored set of Twain's works. Bound in 37 volumes of 1/2 blue/green morocco with gilt decorated spines showing individual titles, volume numbers and "Memorial Edition" at foot, top edge gilt the rest untrimmed. Tipped into prelims of volume 1 is a folded manuscript page in Clemens hand on stationary with the letterhead from the "Victoria Hotel Fifth Ave. Broadway & 27th St. New York". The writings are individual whimsical sentences from some game (states pencil notation at top of page) that Clemens must have been playing during a stay in New York. This set is near fine with the smallest bit of chipping to the heads of volumes 15,16,25,33 (see photos), spines warmly sunning to brown and very mild shelf rub to bottom of boards and some corners. Interior very fresh with no bookplates, ownership signatures or annotations. This is number 15 of 90 sets and is signed by the publisher on the limitation page. A beautiful set of American observational literature, from a time when getting your point across did not mean giving up civility.

Caroll, Lewis
Béta Irodalmi Részvénytársaság kiadása, Budapest, 1929. Cover, frontispiece and text illustrations by John Tenniel. Illustrated throughout. First Hungarian edition. In publisher's half cloth with mounted, color illustration of the front panel. Gilt title on the spine. 137, (7) p. Exceedingly rare, first Hungarian edition of the complete, unabridged text, translated from the original English. Decorated with the original illustrations of John Tenniel. Translated by the Hungarian experimental psychologist and writer, Andor Juhász. This edition was only preceded by an incomplete, infantilized and idealized translation, most likely from the 1869 German translation, and published as a supplement of a Hungarian children's magazine in 1927. "Warren Weaver included a 1924 Budapest edition as the first Hungarian printing of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland citing the Lewis Carroll bibliography of Williams and Madan (1931) as his source. Williams, Madan, and Green (1962) also cite the book with no details. Since there is no trace of the edition in any Hungarian bibliography or library, it is considered a "ghost" edition that has never existed. Although an extensive survey was not made, no collector reports having the book either." (Kérchy, 2015) Bibl.: Kércsy, A.: On the Hungarian Translations of Alice. In: Lindseth, J. Bruno Liljefors is recognized as a very important and influential wildlife painter of the late 18th & early 19th centuries. Reading just some of this book will help one understand why and how this is true. This book has "paper clip" stains on first 2 blank pages. No dust jacket and slight wear at the top and bottom of the spine. The rest of the interior seems to be in excellent condition. And very scarce. Info. copied from title and copyright page(s); Dr. K. E. Russow ,Published by C. E. Fritzes, Stockholm (1929),Printed by Ivar Haeggstrom LTD. C E Fritz Booksellers to the Court The first illustration of photogravure is Bruno before the Easel. There are dozens more as well as approx. 24 "Illustrations in Color". Maybe as the days pass, we will change some of the photos. It measures 12 1/4" x 9 1/4". Embossed into bottom of spine is "No. 104". 104 is stamped on the last page. We bought this book from the home of Les Line approx. 3 years ago. He had passed years earlier and his wife was moving. They lived a just few miles away from here, where the Hudson Valley meets the foothills of the Berkshires. An Audubon article described him as one of "the fathers of environmental journalism". Smith, Clark Ashton
1929. A translation from Baudelaire, bitterly addressing a lover to whom the poet feels chained like a prison convict, and who is compared finally to a vampire. As with all of Smith's Baudelaire translations, it creates an odd couple, though the traditionalist evidently found in the avant-garde Frenchman a kindred spirit of some sort. Baudelaire's use of sordid imagery adds an acerbic (and welcome) note to the usual sweetness of Smith's retro-romanticism." - Robert Eldridge. Not in Sidney-Fryer, Donald. [King] "Marion" [Mrs. Alexander Marion Gemmel]; Jessie M. King,
London: Cecil Palmer, n.d. [1929]. Hardcover. With its large format and beautiful color illustrations on every page, this is one of Jessie M. King's most desirable books. The stories are charming, and many impart a gentle moral to the children reading them. For many years there was some uncertainty about the identity of the author, "Marion." Many believed that Jessie M. King was the author because her middle name was Marion. It was finally established by her descendants, however, that the author was Mrs. Alexander (Marion) Gemmel. (B199, Colin White bibliography). The illustrations are exuberant and playful, as befits stories for small children. There are eleven full-page illustrations, with color decorations on each text page. Bound in bright paper covered pictorial boards with title and illustrator in red to front cover and spine. Some wear and rubbing to edges, hinges, and corners but in very good condition with clean, bright interior. Original glassine jacket not present. 56 pages. CHILD/111412. Near Fine.

Science fiction mystery thriller set largely in India. A Canadian electrical engineer invents a wireless device which can transmit and receive sounds above and below the range of normal human hearing. During an experiment using an ultrahigh frequency, he accidentally taps into the worldwide communication network of the "Speakers in Silence," an "organization whose main object was to foster world unrest in whatever form it could be stirred up." Hans Hyan
Verlag der Neuen Gesellschaft, 1929. Condition: Very Good. First edition. 64pp. Light foxing overall, else very good in publisher's wraps. Despite the sensational nature of its design, the book was a careful sociological study of the nature of the police force and the complacency of bourgeois society. First and only edition of this study of the murders committed by Peter Kurten, the Vampire of Berlin published in the midst of the crimes and before the killer's identity was known. Following the capture and execution of Kurten authorities severed his head and split it in half to search for a physiological cause of his crimes; after none was found the severed head was mummified eventually making its way after World War II to the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum where it still resides today displayed hanging from a hook. Hyan, one of the more fascinating Bohemian characters of the Weimar period was at various times a cabaret artist and lyricist associated with Zum Hungrigen Pegasus, Silberne Punschterrine, and Rote Nachtigall, prolific crime novelist [his novel Die Verfuhrten (The Seduced) was suppressed on charges of lewdness], advocate for penal reform and an outspoken critic of bourgeois society exemplified in his song 'Lied der Arbeitslosen'. Scarce with OCLC locating a single holding at Yale. [Attributes: First Edition]
