Michurin, I.V.
Vol. 1-2 [all published]. Moscow; Leningrad: Novaya Derevnia, 1929-1932. V.1: 159 pp.: ill., 25 pl. (32x23 cm, one of 3000 copies); V.2: 168 pp.: ill., 1 port. (29,5x23 cm, one of 7000 copies). Vol.1. is in fine condition, with deckle edges, some water stains near the spine (t.p. and last spread), a tiny crack of the bottom of the spine. Vol 2. is in very good condition, spine slightly rubbed, traces of paper glued over the front board. The book contains Michurin's report on the work done by him in his 50 years as the plant breeder. In his lifetime he created more than 300 new hybrids of plants. Ivan Michurin (1855-1935), the biologist and the plant breeder, is regarded to be one of the founders of the Soviet school of genetics. Although most of his work was practical, by experimenting with the hybrids and different variations of the plants, he created the material for the theory. Michurin made a major contribution to the development of genetics, especially in the field of pomology. In his cytogenetic laboratory, he researched cell structure and experimented with artificial polyploidy. Michurin studied the aspects of heredity in connection with the natural course of ontogenesis and external influence, creating a whole new concept of predominance. He proved that predominance depends on heredity, ontogenesis, and phylogenesis of the initial cell structure and also on individual features of hybrids and conditions of cultivation. In his works, Michurin assumed a possibility of changing genotype under external influence (Wikipedia). Michurin had the full support of Leni … [Click Below for Full Description]

Steinbeck, John
New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1929. Hard Cover. 1st Edition. Very Good. First edition, first printing of Steinbeck's first book. A very good or better copy, with a lightly faded spine, minor rubbing to the extremities, some offsetting and a very minor abrasion on the front endpaper, with a former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall, in very good condition. Cup of Gold is Steinbeck's first novel and only piece of historical fiction. The book is loosely based on the pirate Henry Morgan, whose two main goals are to conquer Panama City (the "cup of gold") and to win the heart of La Santa Roja, a woman rumored to be as beautiful as the sun. Although this was his first work and is somewhat unique in plot, Cup of Gold shows the author's early interest in themes he continued to use throughout his career as a writer: piracy and myth. various - 1960, 1929. illustrations, pages generally browned, 4to, original pictorial wrappers, some fraying, a couple with covers detached, a few secured with staples, spines flaky and covers generally fragile, but overall in good condition. The pulp magazine format was a vital driver of the science fiction genre, and the examples here include much important, often early, work from major authors such as Ray Bradbury, John Wyndham – under various names – L. Sprague de Camp, A.E. van Vogt, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Theodore Sturgeon, Walter M. Miller, John W. Campbell, Nelson S. Bond, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Frederic Brown, Eric Frank Russell, James Blish, Lester del Rey, Edmond Hamilton, Philip José Farmer, Poul Anderson, and many others. Only in the case of very short-lived examples are there complete runs – the sole issue of of '10 Story Fantasy', or the three issues of 'Fantasy' magazine (1938-9). The former contains, alongside John Beynon (Wyndham)'s 'Tyrant & Slave-Girl on Planet Venus', Arthur C. Clarke's 'Sentinel from Eternity' – the germ of '2001: A Space Odyssey'; elsewhere, in 'Super Science Stories' 1:4, we find the first printing of Asimov's first robot story – 'Strange Playfellow', later retitled 'Robbie'; and in 'Startling Stories' from August 1952, another brand of groundbreaking work with Philip José Farmer's 'The Lovers' – a study of interspecies sexual relations, between a human and an extraterrestrial. R., H. J.
Hamburg ? 1928-1929. Zusatz "Abitur-Arbeit 1928/29". In moderner Graphikmappe. [Click Below for Full Description]

Hammett, Dashiell
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in black and yellow with skull and crossbones motif to front board. About near fine with some toning and a very slight lean to spine, small bookseller's sticker to front pastedown, p. 266 with some ink marks, else tight and clean. Overall, an attractive copy of Hammett's first book. Red Harvest was originally published serially in four installments in the pulp magazine Black Mask from November 1927 - February 1928. Like Hammett's subsequent novel The Dain Curse, Red Harvest features the protagonist the Continental Op, an operative of the Continental Detective Agency's San Francisco office. The Continental Op is regarded as one of the earliest archetypal hard-boiled detective characters, similar to Hammett's later character Sam Spade and Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. The Op is a short middle-aged man, who has few interests or activities outside of his job, a trait which is emphasized by Hammett's omission of the character's name. In this novel, the Op travels to the corrupt mining town Personville, referred to locally as "Poisonville," to solve a murder mystery. Butte, Montana is popularly attributed as the inspiration for Poisonville, since Hammett visited this city while working as an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, which inspired many of his detective stories. Marc Elder
Paris: Editions Pittoresques, 1929. See pictures. Some shelf wear to slip case with edge wear. Book has darkening at spine; the smoke from the cannon has one small chip, and there is a 1 cm crack at the bottom of the spine. The front joint looks as though it may have been repaired but it was very well done and hard to perceive. Foreedges of binding are a little darker too but that may just be a product of the binding process. I've looked through the pages and only find one pencil price on the last blank endpaper at rear (erased, but visible). A very handsome book, both inside and out. A very handsome book, with an attractive fine binding on the outside, and bright and beautiful illustrations (pochoir - each illustration hand-colored by stencil) within. 25 pochoir illustrations including a printer's mark, frontis, 8 full-page plates, and 15 chapter heading; the colophon is also colored. One of only 425 examples, numbered 106. Printed on paper "velin de Rives". About the Binding - The following excerpt is from a mid-20th century advertisement for the work (clipping included); I will note that what the writer calls "inlay", may actually be onlay but it gives the impression of inlay: "4to, full red french levant-morocco, front cover with a sailing vessel formed by inlays of vari-colored Morocco with some tooling in blind surrounded by double inlays of brown and grey morocco forming a geometric border; back with unusual inlay of a firing cannon, the smoke of which contains the gilt lettering; innter geometric gilt borders with corner inlays of brown Morocco, gilt hand marbled … [Click Below for Full Description]

Doubleday Doran/Crime Club, New York.U.S.A, 1929. Author's scarce second book featuring author/amateur detective Ludovic Travers. A NEAR FINE book( trace of wear to top board edge and a faint crease to cloth down center of spine ( not affecting the tight crisp binding in any way) in NEAR FINE ( same very faint crease to spine) jacket without spot , chip , fade or soil. The very rare wrap -around belly band is slightly faded in most areas except the front panel, indicating the book may have been stored with the band facing down . An incredible find. "Price, net,$2.00" still present . A minor bibliomystery since it involves a couple of authors, the letters from "Marius" (and other letters!) and much about newspaper publishing in the first few chapters ( more than one paper is involved). " 'I am going to commit a murder. I offer no apology for the curtness of the statement.' An individual taking the name 'Marius' boasts in a series of letters that he will commit the Perfect Murder, daring Scotland Yard detectives to catch him if they can. Ex-CID officer John Franklin and the amateur but astute detective Ludovic Travers will need to draw conclusions from a soiled letter, a locked room murder, four cast-iron alibis, and trips to France, in a feverish search for the killer and proof of his misdeeds--before 'Marius' can strike again." Inquiries welcomed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Caldwell, Erskine; Mahone, Ty (Illustrator)
Heron Press, 1929. 199 pp + illustrations, with frontispiece. A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Rather than being numbered, this copy is designated "B" and was presumably an author's presentation copy, as it is additionally inscribed (without salutation) "with best wishes for a successful year with the N.Y. Soc. for Sup. of Vice / from [name uncertain] and myself / Erskine Caldwell." It seems likely that this inscription dates from a few years after the publication date. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Apparently the recipient of this copy didn't care to actually read the book, as many of the pages remain unopened. Mild sunning to spine, one small blemish to upper corner of front board, otherwise minimal wear; in a protective mylar cover. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
