Hemingway, Ernest
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine / Dust Jacket Included. First edition, first printing, first issue dust jacket with Catherine Barclay's name misspelled as "Katharine" to front flap. Publisher's black cloth with gold paper labels lettered in black to front board and spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket with a drawing by Cleon. A near fine copy, light offsetting to endpapers and bookplate to front pastedown, scattered spots to text block edges, one bump to the outer edge of the front board, small brown stain to front title label; in a near fine dust jacket with some mild toning and light wear to the extremities, a few minor chips to the spine ends and corners. Overall, a bright, beautiful copy. Hanneman A8a. Set in Italy during World War I, A Farewell to Arms tells the story of a romance between the protagonist Frederic Henry, an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse tending to wounded soldiers. Widely considered one of the best novels to come from the war, the novel is, as the original dust jacket proclaims, "the very essence of beauty as twisted and made tragic by war" that "expresses the innermost nature of war." Unlike many of the other war novels by contemporary writers, A Farewell to Arms addresses not only the aftermath of WWI but the events of the war itself, specifically the Italian Front around the Battle of Caporetto of Autumn 1917. Accordingly, it stood out amongst the war novels, becoming Hemingway's first best-seller and establishing him as a p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Forster, E. M.
Dorking, 1929. Near Fine. Typed letter signed. 7in. by 9in. Typed in black ink to recto of a single sheet of cream Station Gomshall letterhead, signed in black ink and with one small addition to the text in Forster's hand. A near fine letter with one horizontal and one vertical folding crease, pencilled "X" to the upper margin, else very clean with bright ink. This letter is addressed to Denis Saurat, a writer and professor in the Department of French at King's College London, in reference to an upcoming lecture to be given by the French writer and translator Charles Mauron. In a previous letter, Forster had requested that Saurat invite Mauron to give a lecture during an upcoming trip to England in which he was already scheduled to lecture at Oxford and Cambridge. In this letter, Forster expresses his reluctance to give an introductory speech for Mauron's lecture, as he does not consider himself an expert on the subject of Mauron's work. Forster suggests that Roger Fry or Logan Pearsall Smith would be more appropriate choices for an introductory speech. Charles Mauron and E.M. Forster had a long-standing friendship that began with an introduction by their mutual friend, painter Roger Fry. Mauron's first translation project was in 1925, when, after losing most of his eyesight in a chemical accident, he began translating Forster's A Passage to India (1924) with Fry's guidance. Forster and Mauron first met in person in 1927 and remained close friends even after Roger Fry's death, continuing their correspondence until Mauron's death in 1966. Through his connection to Fry and Fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marc Elder
Paris: Editions Pittoresques, 1929. See pictures. Some shelf wear to slip case with edge wear. Book has darkening at spine; the smoke from the cannon has one small chip, and there is a 1 cm crack at the bottom of the spine. The front joint looks as though it may have been repaired but it was very well done and hard to perceive. Foreedges of binding are a little darker too but that may just be a product of the binding process. I've looked through the pages and only find one pencil price on the last blank endpaper at rear (erased, but visible). A very handsome book, both inside and out. A very handsome book, with an attractive fine binding on the outside, and bright and beautiful illustrations (pochoir - each illustration hand-colored by stencil) within. 25 pochoir illustrations including a printer's mark, frontis, 8 full-page plates, and 15 chapter heading; the colophon is also colored. One of only 425 examples, numbered 106. Printed on paper "velin de Rives". About the Binding - The following excerpt is from a mid-20th century advertisement for the work (clipping included); I will note that what the writer calls "inlay", may actually be onlay but it gives the impression of inlay: "4to, full red french levant-morocco, front cover with a sailing vessel formed by inlays of vari-colored Morocco with some tooling in blind surrounded by double inlays of brown and grey morocco forming a geometric border; back with unusual inlay of a firing cannon, the smoke of which contains the gilt lettering; innter geometric gilt borders with corner inlays of brown Morocco, gilt hand marbled … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hammett, Dashiell
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in black and yellow with skull and crossbones motif to front board. About near fine with some toning and a very slight lean to spine, small bookseller's sticker to front pastedown, p. 266 with some ink marks, else tight and clean. Overall, an attractive copy of Hammett's first book. Red Harvest was originally published serially in four installments in the pulp magazine Black Mask from November 1927 - February 1928. Like Hammett's subsequent novel The Dain Curse, Red Harvest features the protagonist the Continental Op, an operative of the Continental Detective Agency's San Francisco office. The Continental Op is regarded as one of the earliest archetypal hard-boiled detective characters, similar to Hammett's later character Sam Spade and Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. The Op is a short middle-aged man, who has few interests or activities outside of his job, a trait which is emphasized by Hammett's omission of the character's name. In this novel, the Op travels to the corrupt mining town Personville, referred to locally as "Poisonville," to solve a murder mystery. Butte, Montana is popularly attributed as the inspiration for Poisonville, since Hammett visited this city while working as an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, which inspired many of his detective stories.
Also auf baldiges Wiedersehen! HEISENBERG, Werner; PAULI, Wolfgang.
Julius Springer 1929-30, Berlin. A fine set, in the original wrappers, of the two papers in which Heisenberg and Pauli gave "for the first time the foundations for quantum electrodynamics in the way we know it today." (Abraham Pais). "Three years before the discovery of the positron Heisenberg and Pauli – in two papers ‘Zur Quantenmechanik der Wellenfelder’ and ‘Zur Quantenmechanik der Wellenfelder II’ of 29 March and 7 September 1929, respectively – took a decisive step forward to develop a consistent theory of quantum electrodynamics." (Mehra & Milton). "Heisenberg’s foremost scientific concern after 1927 involved the search for a consistent extension of the quantum formalism that would yield a satisfactory unification of quantum mechanics and relativity theory. This required the formulation of a covariant theory of interacting particles and fields that accounted for elementary processes at high energies and small distances. In 1929, drawing upon the work of Dirac, Jordan, Oskar Klein, and others, Heisenberg and Pauli succeeded in formulating a general gauge-invariant relativistic quantum field theory by treating particles and fields as separate entities interacting through the intermediaries of field quanta. "The formalism led to the creation of a relativistic quantum electrodynamics, equivalent to that developed by Dirac, which, despite its puzzling negative energy states, seemed satisfactory at low energies and small orders of interaction. But at high energies, where particles approach closer than their radii, the interaction energy diverged to infinity. Even at rest, … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

He worked under the Bacteriologist Emile Van Ermengem, producing the immensely detailed microscopic scientific drawings. Doudelet met Maeterlinck through Louis de Busscher, son of a well-known editor, who invited him to attend a meeting with a group of young writers who wanted to create a new literary magazine. Their first artistic interactions began when Maeterlinck asked the artist to paint six mural paintings for his family chateau in 1895, then, when artist George Minne failed to deliver illustrations for Douze Chansons he asked for Doudelet to illustrate the work. 1929. Extraordinary Association copy, signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page: " For Henry Pfeiffer, yours very truly, Ernest Hemingway, Piggot-December 31-1932". Henry Pfeiffer was a philanthropist and uncle to Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Paul Pfeiffer, Pauline's father, and uncles Henry and G. A. founded Pfeiffer Pharmaceutical Company. Paul left the company and moved his family to Piggott, Arkansas to make a life for his family. This copy was signed and inscribed in Piggott, the family's estate, to his wife's uncle Henry. Ernest's marriage to Pauline and the influence of the Pfeiffer family was incredibly important to Hemingway's life, career, and literary endeavors. During the course of their thirteen year marriage, Hemingway started and/or finished "A Farewell to Arms", "Winner Take Nothing", "Green Hills of Africa", "To Have and Have Not", "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories", and "For Whom the Bells Tolls". Pauline's father Paul even renovated the family barn in Piggott into a workspace for Hemingway. Uncle G. A. Pfeiffer was the couple's benefactor, having purchased homes for them in Key West and Paris, as well as purchasing cars for them, and more importantly, financing an African Safari in 1933 which became the basis of Hemingway's novels, "Green Hills of Africa", as well as for the short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". This book, A Farewell to Arms was dedicated to G. A. Pfeiffer by Hemingway. "A Farewell to Arms" also has a Pfeiffer connection with the dramatic endi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mikhail Zoschenko
Executed ca. 1929. Thirty-two pages constituting two signatures from a small quarto notebook of graph-paper. A draft of the stories that would make up the juvenile book published in 1930, in which the erstwhile formidable satirist is seen reduced to celebrating the glories of Lenin for children. This was done out of utmost necessity, i.e., survival. The author (1894-1953) had come under fire for his satirical work which proved all too popular for the establishment. This was an act of attrition which failed to ameliorate the displeasure of the authorities and by 1948 his writing was completely suppressed. Most of the present text is written in a shorthand notation, rather heavily corrected and altered in pencil and ink. Signed by Zoshchenko in pencil on the upper sheet. Unique. Stanislav Szukalski
the item comes with certificate of authenticity. Title: Atak Kraka, Twórcownie czy Akademje? (Krak's attack, creators or academies?) Published in: Kraków (Cracow), 1929 The first page features a handwritten dedication in pencil by Stanislav Szukalski to Antoni Bryndza (Ziemitrud from Kalwaria) who was one of Szukalski's close collaborators and friends in the Horned Heart Tribe (Szczep Rogate Serce). The dedication is in Polish and reads: "Drogiemu Jantosiowi od Stacha 1930" (To dear Jantos from Stach 1930). In this dedication Szukalski uses an affectionate declination/pet name of Antoni Bryndza (Jantos), as well as refering to himself as Stach, a name only a select number of close friends could call him. The dedication is made in Szukalski's signature curved writting. On the third page you have a sign saying "Ze zbiorów Antoniego Bryndzy" (From the private collection of Antoni Bryndza). On the fourth page is a stamp: "Art. mal. Marian Konarski, Krzeszowice". Atak Kraka was a publication, printed in a very small number of copies in Poland by the Horned Heart Tribe and written/edited predominantly by Szukalski himself featuring his notions on country, liberty, race, art etc. It's exceedingly hard to come by any copies as the vast majority has been destroyed during the Second World War.
