Banting, Frederick G.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1929. [20pp]: [ii], 18; stitched in letterpress card covers; 228 x 152 mm pamphlet. A very good copy of the first Canadian publication of Banting's Cameron Prize Lecture delivered 30 October 1928 at the University of Edinburgh, the author's unrecorded first regular separate publication in his native land (preceded only by an uncovered Canadian offprint, 'Medical Research', 1926: The Canadian Medical Association Journal, np). Of 12 preceding separate publications by Banting alone (mostly American), all but one -- the Nobel lecture, 'Diabetes & Insulin' -- were notably offprints. Printed letterpress throughout, the text has been reset & foliated integrally, with cover title repeating the title-page typography (except that the year on the cover has been altered from old-style to lining figures). Collation conforms to the Scottish edition of 1929 with the 'University of Toronto Press' imprint (in the same type-face as the text) replacing that of 'Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh' at the foot of the last page. Both editions follow the text first printed in the Edinburgh Medical Journal (January 1929). A very scarce debut (WorldCat locating only 5 copies from both editions together). The present copy is clean & well-preserved, save for a crease along the fore-edge (from being pressed against the back of a bookcase). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

GOODEN, Stephen. MOORE, George.
William Heinemann Ltd, London, 1929. First illustrated Edition. No.251 of 375 copies, signed by Moore and Gooden. 12 original copper engravings (nine full-page). Tall 8vo, original full vellum, gilt lettering on spine, unopend and untrimmed, in the original card slipcase. Few dark spots on the vellum and slipcase rather worn but otherwise a very good, crisp copy. Together with: A set of 12 proof copper engraved plates in a portfolio signed and dated 1927 and 1928 by Gooden on each plate. Large folio, in the original brown buckram portfolio lettered in gilt on the upper cover. All in fine condition. In 1913 the important Irish author George Moore (1852-1933) journeyed to Jerusalem to research background for his novel The Brook Kerith. This book is based on the supposition that a non-divine Christ did not die on the cross but was nursed back to health and eventually travelled to India to learn wisdom which obviously embroiled Moore in considerable controversy." Moore importance was huge. According to Richard Ellmann he heavily influenced Joyce and is often referred to as the first great modern Irish novelist. Obviously of the greatest rarity and in extremely good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

YEATS, W. B.
Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1929. Octavo. Original buff linen-backed blue paper covered boards, paper label to spine printed in black, front board lettered in black, blue endpapers, edges untrimmed. With the plain paper dust jacket. A couple of tiny dents to bottom edge of rear board, very faint browning to endpapers; else a fine copy in the lightly soiled jacket with touch of creasing to edges. Title page vignette by T. Sturge Moore. First edition, first impression, one of 425 copies printed by Elizabeth Yeats in June 1929. Yeats's Packet for Ezra Pound presents one side of an intriguing literary and personal friendship. Yeats lived with Pound on more than one; first in Ashdown Forest, where Pound's helped to renovate Yeats's poetic style for his 1914 collection "Responsibilities", and later in Rapallo during the late 1920s, the period with which the present work is concerned. Yeats describes Pound as a man "whose art is the opposite of mine, whose criticism commends what I most condemn, a man with whom I should quarrel more than with anyone else if we were not united by affection". The Cuala Press was one half of the Cuala Industries, a co-operative business run with Lily Yeats. Cuala Industries was founded with the aim of reviving the craft of book printing in Ireland and "to give work to Irish girls" (McMurtrie, p. 472). The press's "clearly legible, slender volumes with their distinctive paper labels may be seen as the sole survivors of the handcrafted ideal established in 1900 by Walker and T. J. Cobden-Sanderson's Doves Press" (ODNB). Copies in the original jacket are n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barcia, José F. [Fernandez].
Barcia, José F. [Fernandez].Sonatina Gijonesa.Madrid: [Talleres Espasa-Calpe], 1929. 300 pp. Sm. 8vo. Paper wrappers. First edition. Wrappers worn, small chips to edges, some minor sunning, spine cocked, still a very good copy of this very scarce title. Suares: Escritores y artistas asturianos III, pp.188-191. Item #34152 Warmly inscribed by the author to Enrique Naranjo. 'Sonatina Gijonesa,' the second work by the Asturian author, José Barcia, created an uproar because of its caustic portrayal of the social parasitism of the wealthy classes. Though the novel is somewhat autobiographical, and many of the characters were easily identifiable (which no doubt intensified the uproar), the work is marked by an early experimentalism and break with more traditional storytelling. José Fernández Barcia (1887-1948) born in Gijón, emigrated to Argentina, knocked around in dead end jobs, served in the Uruguay National guard and as a trade Unionist in France, but returned to Gijon to write his first work, Andanzas (Gijón, 1924), an autobiography. He again left, traveled to Germany where he taught Spanish, and finally returned to Oviedo to write this novel. (See Alvaro Ruiz de la Peña, Introducción a la literatura asturiana, pp. 193-196). New York: Privately printed. Some damage to the bottom edge of the leather spine. See photos for evidence of condition. William Kissam Vanderbilt, II, who was known as Willie K, filled a great part of his life with travel and leisure activities. He particularly loved horses, yachts, and automobiles. This book is a self-published journey of his 1928-1929 trip around the world in his yacht the Ara. It includes all sorts of details about the journey, including the provisions taken, the passengers, the ports visited, the people met, lots of black-and-white photographs, and reproductions of watercolors of various fish. The book measures about 10" x 13" and is about 1 1/2" thick. It was published in 1929 and is number 91 in a limited edition printing of 500. It is signed by the author on December 25, 1929 as a gift to R. H. Pearce. The images of fish are strikingly beautiful and in vivid colors. There is some damage to the leather spine (at the bottom edge), some slight variation in color (see the image of the front cover which shows evidence where perhaps a smaller book was stored beside this one) and some wear to the edges of the front and back covers. However, has no tears, missing pages, handwritten insertions, etc. It is a beautiful, historic book and provides a window into an opulent lifestyle from another era. Our items are typically pre-owned, vintage or antique and will show the signs of normal use or wear. However, we make every effort to note any exceptions to normal wear. While evaluation of each item is subjective, we attempt to describe the condition as accurately … [Click Below for Full Description]

KARINTHY, FRIGYES
Budapest: Athenaeum, 1929. First edition. Original cloth. Very Good. THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE BOOK THAT INTRODUCED THE IDEA OF "SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION" AS A FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTIC OF SOCIAL NETWORKS. One of the key characteristics of social networks is what is known as the "small world phenomenon" - the idea that every individual can be linked to every other individual through a relatively short chain of acquaintance relationships. "[T]he first significant empirical study of [the phenomenon] was undertaken by the social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who asked randomly chosen 'starter individuals' to each try forwarding a letter to a designated 'target' person living in the town of Sharon, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston... Roughly a third of the letters eventually arrived at the target, in a median of six steps, and this has since served as basic experimental evidence for the existence of short paths in the global friendship network, linking all (or almost all) of us together in society" (David Easley and John Kleinberg, "Networks, Crowds, and Markets: Reasoning About a Highly Connected World" (2010)). Since the time of Milgram's original research - first published in the charter issue of the magazine Psychology Today - the concept has been validated by, among other things, analysis of Facebook and Twitter data. (See Mark Newman, "Networks" (Oxford 2018), ch. 10.) It is Milgram's work, however, that led John Guare to give the phenomenon its modern name, "six degrees of separation" - actually something of a misnomer since the 44 paths reported in Milgram' … [Click Below for Full Description]

… [Click Below for Full Description]

Caldwell, Erskine; Mahone, Ty (Illustrator)
The Bastard [Signed, With Interesting Inscription] Author: Caldwell, Erskine; Mahone, Ty (Illustrator) Published: New York; Heron Press, 1929 Binding: Hardcover Condition: Very Good (please see full item description for details) Description: 199 pp + illustrations, with frontispiece. A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Rather than being numbered, this copy is designated "B" and was presumably an author's presentation copy, as it is additionally inscribed (without salutation) "with best wishes for a successful year with the N.Y. Soc. for Sup. of Vice / from [name uncertain] and myself / Erskine Caldwell." It seems likely that this inscription dates from a few years after the publication date. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Apparently the recipient of this copy didn't care to actually read the book, as many of the pages remain unopened. Mild sunning to spine, one small blemish to upper corner of front board, otherwise minimal wear; in a protective mylar cover. see our other Literature listings Please email us for additional details about any item and we will respond promptly. Paris: Editions Pittoresques, 1929. See pictures. Some shelf wear to slip case with edge wear. Book has darkening at spine; the smoke from the cannon has one small chip, and there is a 1 cm crack at the bottom of the spine. The front joint looks as though it may have been repaired but it was very well done and hard to perceive. Foreedges of binding are a little darker too but that may just be a product of the binding process. I've looked through the pages and only find one pencil price on the last blank endpaper at rear (erased, but visible). A very handsome book, both inside and out. A very handsome book, with an attractive fine binding on the outside, and bright and beautiful illustrations (pochoir - each illustration hand-colored by stencil) within. 25 pochoir illustrations including a printer's mark, frontis, 8 full-page plates, and 15 chapter heading; the colophon is also colored. One of only 425 examples, numbered 106. Printed on paper "velin de Rives". About the Binding - The following excerpt is from a mid-20th century advertisement for the work (clipping included); I will note that what the writer calls "inlay", may actually be onlay but it gives the impression of inlay: "4to, full red french levant-morocco, front cover with a sailing vessel formed by inlays of vari-colored Morocco with some tooling in blind surrounded by double inlays of brown and grey morocco forming a geometric border; back with unusual inlay of a firing cannon, the smoke of which contains the gilt lettering; innter geometric gilt borders with corner inlays of brown Morocco, gilt hand marbled … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Gorsky, A.K.] Gornostaev, A.K.
[Harbin], 1929. [4], 88 pp. 26x18,5 cm. In publisher's wrappers. The spine is rebacked with paper, some bleak stains on the front wrapper and a tiny tear, ink stamp on the t.p.
