RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT! - 1929 -24th Printing- 1932 w/Dust Jacket - SIGNED This is truly a great book with a great story on how it was won by the previous owner. Back in 1933 , Robert Ripley held a contest in the New York American newspaper. The previous owner won the book in that contest. The cool thing about this story is that it is documented inside the cover near the signature of Ripley. It is amazing on how he won the book and the story behind it. In addition, this book comes with the dust jacket, which is very hard to find. The dust jacket was folded up inside the book. See all pix for best description. The book in its condition, the rare dust jacket, and the documentation of the story behind it make this a truly great find. See all pix SOLD AS IS. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

COOLIDGE, Calvin
Washington: U.S. Gov. Printing Office, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine and exceptionally scarce item with a superb association. Small octavo (5-1/2" x 7-1/2") bound in flexible blue morocco leather lettered in gilt (including Coolidge's name at the bottom right) and decorated in gilt with stars in the corners and the Presidential coat-of-arms in the center. With a printed title page but the 19 text pages mimeographed rather than printed on paper with three holes in the gutter margin. Obviously a very limited production likely printed for Coolidge's personal use, and quite possibly unique. OCLC does not record any printed copy of this speech though it lists about 70 others. Given the same day as the 1927 State of the Union address, this speech was given to a much smaller, more selective audience. In the audience was William Butler, a Massachusetts Senator who was Coolidge's campaign manager and the Republican Party Chairman. This is his copy and is INSCRIBED and SIGNED to him by the President two days before Coolidge left office: "To Honorable William M. Butler,/In appreciation of a long and/faithful friendship/ Calvin Coolidge, /The White House,/March 1 1929." In the third sentence of his speech Coolidge acknowledges Butler: "Both the primary and the election were under the immediate direction of the present Chairman, William M. Butler." In his AUTOBIOGRAPHY, Coolidge remarks: "The campaign was magnificently managed by William M. Butler." Two minor text corrections in ink, likely by Coolidge.

Rudolf Koch
Mainz, Germany: Mainzer Presse, 1929-1930. Condition: ___ All three volumes in near fine condition with light wear to the head of the spines, some rubbing to one corner, and a very light, stray mark on the front of Volumes I and III. Volume II has duplicate plate numbers 167-170 bound in, no plates missing. Quarto size. The idea for this work came from a trip Rudolph Koch took in Germany with his young children to gather wildflowers; he drew them, and then enlisted the help of his friend Fritz Kredel to make woodcuts from his drawings (from A Century for the Century by Hutner and Kelly). "Fritz Kredel learned his trade as assistant to Rudolph Koch, in Offenbach during the 1920's; by the time he left Germany he was a celebrated illustrator. The woodcut and pen and ink were his preferred mediums, and one of his masterpieces -- in collaboration with Koch -- was 'Das Blumenbuch' (''The Flower Book'') of 1929-30, for which Kredel cut more than 250 color flower illustrations in wood. Woodcuts, he felt, had a crispness and sharpness that could not be achieved in any other medium" (from a NY Times review of Centennial Exhibit of Kredel's work). The woodcuts were then hand-colored by Emil Wollner. DESCRIPTION: All text in German; each volume contains hand-colored plates printed on the rectos only, with each page displaying one flower, some arranged by season ("From Winter to Early Spring" and so on) or locale ("In the Meadow", etc); Table of Contents at the rear, a total of 250 plates between the three volumes. O, O. u. D. 2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.

Arthur Conan Doyle - The Maracot Deep - 1929 first edition published by John Murray Inscribed by the Author to the title page: "To W.B.M. A poor exchange against Mr. Raikes (who makes horribly for self psycho-analysis), but one of the four may find a mark. A Conan Doyle". The recipient was the author and playwright William Babington Maxwell, who wrote the 1929 title "Himself and Mr. Raikes.", which features a young man constantly at conflict with his own, darker side, portrayed as a separate character. Maxwell was a prolific novelist who enlisted to fight in the First World War and served in France at the age of 50. The book is firmly bound in red cloth, lettered in gilt to spine and front board, the extremities are a little rubbed and bumped. The text block is slightly toned and spotted. Loosely retained inside the book are 4 publishers ads, 2 for the Sherlock Holmes Stories. The dust jacket is the original, it is slightly chipped and rubbed with fading to the spine and a few short closed tears. The book is preserved within a custom made solander box. An excellent association copy, lengthy inscriptions from Doyle being uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Marc Elder
Paris: Editions Pittoresques, 1929. See pictures. Some shelf wear to slip case with edge wear. Book has darkening at spine; the smoke from the cannon has one small chip, and there is a 1 cm crack at the bottom of the spine. The front joint looks as though it may have been repaired but it was very well done and hard to perceive. Foreedges of binding are a little darker too but that may just be a product of the binding process. I've looked through the pages and only find one pencil price on the last blank endpaper at rear (erased, but visible). A very handsome book, both inside and out. A very handsome book, with an attractive fine binding on the outside, and bright and beautiful illustrations (pochoir - each illustration hand-colored by stencil) within. 25 pochoir illustrations including a printer's mark, frontis, 8 full-page plates, and 15 chapter heading; the colophon is also colored. One of only 425 examples, numbered 106. Printed on paper "velin de Rives". About the Binding - The following excerpt is from a mid-20th century advertisement for the work (clipping included); I will note that what the writer calls "inlay", may actually be onlay but it gives the impression of inlay: "4to, full red french levant-morocco, front cover with a sailing vessel formed by inlays of vari-colored Morocco with some tooling in blind surrounded by double inlays of brown and grey morocco forming a geometric border; back with unusual inlay of a firing cannon, the smoke of which contains the gilt lettering; innter geometric gilt borders with corner inlays of brown Morocco, gilt hand marbled … [Click Below for Full Description]

taylor
1929. About this Item: Wormley Publishing Co., Worcester, 1928. Hardcover. First Edition; First Printing. This is a 1st Edition copy, of the self-published autobiography of African-American bicyclist, Marshall W. "Major" Taylor. Taylor was the first African-American World Champion cyclist and the second African-American world champion in any sport, after batam weight boxer, George Dixon. It is in deep blue cloth over boards with faded gilt titles, though the spine titling is completely faded. There is only very light edge and corner wear. Marshall Taylor (1878-1932) was the son of a slave who as a worker in a bicycle shop acquired such skill as a rider that he developed quickly into a competitive racer. By 1898, he had secured seven world records and a year later was crowned national and international champion. Though facing much racial prejudice, Taylor continued to win prizes both in the US and abroad. The autobiography chronicles the serious obstacles that Taylor faced, from taunts, to threats to physical assault. Partly because of this,Taylor retired from racing at age 32, a wealthy man with a wife and daughter. He self-published this autobiography. However, various problems led to the dissolution of his family and the loss of the wealth he had acquired from racing. He moved to Chicago where he roomed at the YMCA and tried to sell copies of his book on the streets. He died penniless in 1932. Though somewhat forgotten, he was the first major African-American sports superstar. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Privately printed, 1929. Some damage to the bottom edge of the leather spine. See photos for evidence of condition. William Kissam Vanderbilt, II, who was known as Willie K, filled a great part of his life with travel and leisure activities. He particularly loved horses, yachts, and automobiles. This book is a self-published journey of his 1928-1929 trip around the world in his yacht the Ara. It includes all sorts of details about the journey, including the provisions taken, the passengers, the ports visited, the people met, lots of black-and-white photographs, and reproductions of watercolors of various fish. The book measures about 10" x 13" and is about 1 1/2" thick. It was published in 1929 and is number 91 in a limited edition printing of 500. It is signed by the author on December 25, 1929 as a gift to R. H. Pearce. The images of fish are strikingly beautiful and in vivid colors. There is some damage to the leather spine (at the bottom edge), some slight variation in color (see the image of the front cover which shows evidence where perhaps a smaller book was stored beside this one) and some wear to the edges of the front and back covers. However, has no tears, missing pages, handwritten insertions, etc. It is a beautiful, historic book and provides a window into an opulent lifestyle from another era. Our items are typically pre-owned, vintage or antique and will show the signs of normal use or wear. However, we make every effort to note any exceptions to normal wear. Sprague de Camp, A.E. van Vogt, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Theodore Sturgeon, Walter M. Miller, John W. Campbell, Nelson S. Bond, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Frederic Brown, Eric Frank Russell, James Blish, Lester del Rey, Edmond Hamilton, Philip José Farmer, Poul Anderson, and many others. Only in the case of very short-lived examples are there complete runs – the sole issue of of '10 Story Fantasy', or the three issues of 'Fantasy' magazine (1938-9). The former contains, alongside John Beynon (Wyndham)'s 'Tyrant & Slave-Girl on Planet Venus', Arthur C. Clarke's 'Sentinel from Eternity' – the germ of '2001: A Space Odyssey'; elsewhere, in 'Super Science Stories' 1:4, we find the first printing of Asimov's first robot story – 'Strange Playfellow', later retitled 'Robbie'; and in 'Startling Stories' from August 1952, another brand of groundbreaking work with Philip José Farmer's 'The Lovers' – a study of interspecies sexual relations, between a human and an extraterrestrial. Caldwell, Erskine; Mahone, Ty (Illustrator)
Heron Press, 1929. The Bastard [Signed, With Interesting Inscription] Author: Caldwell, Erskine; Mahone, Ty (Illustrator) Published: New York; Heron Press, 1929 Binding: Hardcover Condition: Very Good (please see full item description for details) Description: 199 pp + illustrations, with frontispiece. A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Rather than being numbered, this copy is designated "B" and was presumably an author's presentation copy, as it is additionally inscribed (without salutation) "with best wishes for a successful year with the N.Y. Soc. for Sup. of Vice / from [name uncertain] and myself / Erskine Caldwell." It seems likely that this inscription dates from a few years after the publication date. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Apparently the recipient of this copy didn't care to actually read the book, as many of the pages remain unopened. Mild sunning to spine, one small blemish to upper corner of front board, otherwise minimal wear; in a protective mylar cover. see our other Literature listings Please email us for additional details about any item and we will respond promptly. [JONES, David (1895-1974), illustrator] Samuel Taylor COLERIDGE
Bristol: Douglas Cleverdon for the Fanfare Press, 1929. 4to (315 x 248 mm; 12 1/4 x 10 inches). 10 copper-engraved plates by Jones. Original quarter gilt-lettered cream cloth, green boards. Spine slightly soiled, light wear at extremities. Item #403565 LIMITED EDITION, number 265 of 480 total copies. Coleridge's poem had haunted Jones since his childhood. "Though but little known as an engraver in the 1920's, he was to be an inspired choice, and undertook his commission with great seriousness and devotion. From the first, Jones saw his task as not one of simple illustration, but as the attempt to realise in visual terms the symbolic imagery arisen from the deeps of Coleridge's imagination. Jones tells us that between 150 and 200 preliminary drawings were made in response to the commission" (Peter Larkin, "David Jones and the Ancient Mariner," in: The Coleridge Bulletin Conference Issue, [unnumbered] July 1996, pp. 2-20). In 1964, while working on the foreword to a new edition, Jones wrote to the art critic Kenneth Clark, "it was quite a business finding a copper-plate printer [in 1929]. However we found one. Even in 1929 it was becoming difficult because printing from copper-plates had of course ceased as a normal means of reproduction years before then. And as you know the process is totally different from wood-block printing. I wouldn't be surprised if very soon it will be impossible to get copper-plate engravings printed" (quoted in Thomas Dilworth, "Letters from David Jones to Kenneth Clark," in: The Burlington Magazine 142, no. 1165 (2000), p. 223). London: The Seizin Press, 1929. London: The Seizin Press,, 1929. Presentation copy from Robert Graves to his sister Louise Octavo. Original plain buckram. Title page vignette by Len Lye. Spine lightly browned, faint soiling to cloth, a couple of marginal marks to contents; else a near-fine copy. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by poet Robert Graves to his sister on the front free endpaper, "Louise with love from Robert (printer & publisher)". Graves founded The Seizen Press with his literary partner Laura Riding in 1927. This is the second work published by the press, the first being Riding's Love is Love, Death is Death (1928). This is one of two known proof copies printed in April 1929 on wood pulp paper instead of the heavy rag paper used for the signed limited trade edition of 225 copies. According to Wilson's bibliography at least one other such copy, also without a limitation label, is known. An Acquaintance with Description is part of Stein's explanatory series about writing that began with An Elucidation in 1923. Stein wrote this study of description after her return to France in the summer of 1926 from a lecture tour in Cambridge and Oxford. "The piece is an attempt to make a landscape her own... Stein considers how we apprehend what we see and how we compose our perceptions in words" (Stein Reader p. 504). "Since the experience of England had contributed to the study of description, Stein must have been delighted to see it published by Laura Riding and Robert Graves, with whom she had become friends" (ibid.). Wells A Knight in the Crusade to help the Blind of America With Christmas Greetings From Helen Keller December 1929." Very nice and unusually lengthy gift inscription from Keller to a prominent recipient with reference to the social issue she was known for. Holiday greetings a bonus. Autobiography of Keller's adulthood, told with her signature charm, wit and feeling, and involving her many prominent acquaintances and friendships with the likes of Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, Henry Ford, Enrico Caruso, Thomas Edison, etc. 362 pages, index. POTTER, Beatrix.
London and New York Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd, 1929. First and only edition; 16mo (125 x 93 mm.); colour frontispiece, colour vignette title, 12 colour plates and patterned colour endpapers by the author, internally fine; publisher's pale brown boards lettered in dark brown with inset colour illustration to upper cover, a little light finger-marking but overall a very good copy, in original plain glassine dust-jacket, presented in later solander box. An attractive example of what was intended by Warne to be one of a series; unfortunately Beatrix Potter was fundamentally dissatisfied with the finished product and felt the work interfered too much with her other commitments. This was therefore the one & only almanac. The work features a colour plate by Beatrix Potter for each month of the year, with suitably seasonal theme. Forster, E. M.
Dorking, 1929. Near Fine. Typed letter signed. 7in. by 9in. Typed in black ink to recto of a single sheet of cream Station Gomshall letterhead, signed in black ink and with one small addition to the text in Forster's hand. A near fine letter with one horizontal and one vertical folding crease, pencilled "X" to the upper margin, else very clean with bright ink. This letter is addressed to Denis Saurat, a writer and professor in the Department of French at King's College London, in reference to an upcoming lecture to be given by the French writer and translator Charles Mauron. In a previous letter, Forster had requested that Saurat invite Mauron to give a lecture during an upcoming trip to England in which he was already scheduled to lecture at Oxford and Cambridge. In this letter, Forster expresses his reluctance to give an introductory speech for Mauron's lecture, as he does not consider himself an expert on the subject of Mauron's work. Forster suggests that Roger Fry or Logan Pearsall Smith would be more appropriate choices for an introductory speech. Charles Mauron and E.M. Forster had a long-standing friendship that began with an introduction by their mutual friend, painter Roger Fry. Mauron's first translation project was in 1925, when, after losing most of his eyesight in a chemical accident, he began translating Forster's A Passage to India (1924) with Fry's guidance. Forster and Mauron first met in person in 1927 and remained close friends even after Roger Fry's death, continuing their correspondence until Mauron's death in 1966. Through his connection to Fry and Fo … [Click Below for Full Description]
