Professor Karl Blossfeldt
Berlin: Verlag Ernst Wasmuth. The 1929 stated 2nd edition of this seminal photographic study of plants and flowers, IN ITS UNCOMMON PICTORIAL DUSTJACKET. Loosely translated from its German as "Archetypes of Art", Karl Blossfeldt's groundbreaking portraits, all in rich, lavish gravure, highlight the brilliance--and the beauty--of nature's remarkable design. A very solid copy to boot: Tight and VG+ to Near Fine, with bright, completely unrubbed gilt-titling and insignia along the front panel. Internally, clean as could be, with no writing or markings of any kind. And in a crisp, VG dustjacket, with light chipping along the spine ends (at the spine crown very light loss, at the spine base 1 1/2" of loss) and at the tips. Mild scuffing and soiling as well to the panels but the jacket remains attractive and very presentable. Tall quarto, 120 plates all told. Edited and with an Introduction by Karl Nierendorf. Very Good + in Very Good jacket. [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Munn, Orson D.: Editor McCay, Winsor
Scientific American Publishing Company New York 1929 First Edition 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Paperback Lucky Strike cigarette ad on back cover provides a truly classic and timeless example of a mis-timed advertisement. Consider that the great Wall St. stock market crash of 1929 occurred mere days before this issue hit the newsstands. Beneath the caption "An Ancient Prejudice has been removed" appears a clenched fist labeled as "American Intelligence" breaking a heavy chain. Top left a paranoid miser stacks his gold by candlelight. Top right a wealthy couple visits their palatial bank. Text beneath miser reads "Hoarding gold with the fanatical zeal of the miser has vanished. American Intelligence sponsors thousands of banking institutions to which the individual (i.e. the wealthy couple) safely entrusts his wealth." The message is clear. Readers should put their trust (and money) in the banks, and shun gold. This issue was likely printed just as the Great Crash occurred, causing countless financial institutions to go under - and destroying even more individual fortunes. (The ad goes on to claim that cigarettes have similarly overcome the prejudice against them.) A truly stunning work which deserves to be preserved and reflected upon in this age of limitless fiat currency printing. Average wear with three-inch crease to lower corner of back cover. Suitably framed and mounted, this ad will make a superlative office display for any precious metals executive. Shakespeare, William
Weimar: Cranach Presse, 1929. Hardcover. Orig. vellum backed boards, spine and front cover lettered in red. Near fine in original worn plain paper jacket. Craig, Edward Gordeon. 203 pages. Folio, 35.2 x 24. Limited edition, copy 74 of 230. Woodcut illustrations by and after Edward Gordon Craig, half title and title printed in red and black from type by Eric Gill, typeface designed by Edward Johnson. Ancillary texts in English, French, German and Latin printed in the margins. A monument 17 years in the making, Count Harry Kessler's Cranach Hamlet began with a proposed stage production of Gordon-Craig, from which Kessler agreed to do a lavish book in 1912. Working through World War and through the 1920's, Gordon-Craig designed the woodcuts, cutting them himself, and master craftsman Edward Johnson designed the typeface "after that used by Fust and Schoeffer in their Mainz Psalter of 1457, it was cut by Edward Prince and completed after his death by G.T. Friend." [see: FRANKLIN THE PRIVATE PRESS] who also notes, p.164: "The bravest adventure among all private press books.....This book is a flawless monument." Further, "Anybody who examines the Cranach Press Hamlet must agree it is worthy of its reputation. The paper, superficially like Bachelor's Kelmscott. seems softer and more friendly, appropriate for the expressionist style of Craig's woodcuts. It is an expressionist book......Sometimes the woodcuts appear like suggestions for sets and costume. Sometimes they enter the page in a kind of stage setting of type, as the sources for Shakespeare make their way round the edges … [Click Below for Full Description]

Offsetting to endpapers, head of spine lightly bumped, inscriptions to front preliminaries (see below), but a near fine copy in very good dustwrapper with a small scuff to spine, a couple of small chips to top edge, and with just a little wear to head of spine. First edition. AUTHOR'S COPY, WITH HIS INSCRIPTION IN THE MONTH OF PUBLICATION TO FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: 'Auctor Auctori. 26 September 1929 Hampstead'. Additional ownership inscription of the daughter of Kitchin's friend, the English literary scholar Nevill Coghill: 'Carol Martin 13-15 Frognal London NW3.' Described by his friend L.P. Hartley as 'the most talented man I have ever met', C[lifford] H[enry] B[enn] Kitchin [1895-1967] read Classics at Oxford, qualified as a barrister, bred and raced greyhounds, collected china and antique furniture, and was a highly talented chess player, bridge player and pianist. He also made a fortune on the Stock Exchange, liberating him from the need to make money and enabling him to devote his time to writing. Death Of My Aunt was his third novel, his first detective story, and the first of four books featuring the amateur sleuth Malcolm Warren. The first two of these were published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press. Extremely popular in their time, they seem to have interested Kitchin rather less than his readers: the four Warren titles were published over a period of twenty years, and he always referred to this one as 'that wretched book.' Arthur Conan Doyle - The Maracot Deep - 1929 first edition published by John Murray Inscribed by the Author to the title page: "To W.B.M. A poor exchange against Mr. Raikes (who makes horribly for self psycho-analysis), but one of the four may find a mark. A Conan Doyle". The recipient was the author and playwright William Babington Maxwell, who wrote the 1929 title "Himself and Mr. Raikes.", which features a young man constantly at conflict with his own, darker side, portrayed as a separate character. Maxwell was a prolific novelist who enlisted to fight in the First World War and served in France at the age of 50. The book is firmly bound in red cloth, lettered in gilt to spine and front board, the extremities are a little rubbed and bumped. The text block is slightly toned and spotted. Loosely retained inside the book are 4 publishers ads, 2 for the Sherlock Holmes Stories. The dust jacket is the original, it is slightly chipped and rubbed with fading to the spine and a few short closed tears. The book is preserved within a custom made solander box. An excellent association copy, lengthy inscriptions from Doyle being uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

GUÉRIN Maurice de; LINOSSIER Claudius
1929. One of 133 copies. 73 Woodcuts by Philippe Burnot after designs by Claudius Linossier in black, red and palladium. Folio, 28 x 23cm. Original publishers paper wrappers in later wooden box with inlaid stingray skin design by Antonio Perez-Noriega. Lyon, Cercle Gryphe. The only book decorated by the famed Art Deco metalworker Claudius Linossier, combining the pagan natural beauty of de Guérin?s poem with the strict geometry of decorative modernity. The result is a stunning visual spectacle which feels both ancient and futuristic, leaving the reader unsure whether they are accompanying Pan through the mountains of ancient Greece, or rushing through the dizzying heights of Fritz Lang?s Metropolis. The experience of reading the book leaves one feeling much as de Guérin?s Macareus: ?Abandoning myself to existence as rivers do, ceaselessly inhaling the effluence of Cybele, were it in the lap of valleys or upon the summit of the mountains, I bounded along every-whither, a mere life, blind, and at large.? A fine copy with only slight crinkling to the paper wrappers contained within an artfully designed box by a pupil of Jean de Gonet, edges slightly rubbed. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
