Woolf, Virginia
1929. Condition: Very Good. FIRST EDITION with Dust Jacket. Original cinnamon cloth, gilt on the spine quite bright & unrubbed, in the rare original dust jacket. This has had archival restoration at the top & bottom of the spine and at the corners. Hardly perceptible. Previous owner's signature on front free end page and light discoloring to same else EXCELLENT condition in VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. Woolf's seminal essay on women and writing has become a classic feminist text: Woolf's "aim was to establish a woman's tradition, recognizable by its circumstances, subject-matter, and its distinct problems. A Room of One's Own charted this vast territory with an air of innocent discovery which itself sharpens the case against induced ineffectiveness and ignorance that for so long clouded the counter-history of women" "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," said Woolf, "and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved." One of the most influential and progressive texts of 20th century literary feminism "A Room of One's Own" is based on Virginia Woolf's Cambridge lectures called 'Women and Fiction' given at two women's colleges, the Arts Society at Newnham and the Odtaa at Girton in October 1928. Virginia Woolf makes her way through the shelves of the British Library, and thus playfully, through the history, education and writing of women in England, their marginalisation and struggle to be creative and defy convention. She analyses as well as exposes Britain as a patriarchal … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thurman, Wallace
Macaulay, 1929. First edition of author's first book, for which he is best known. Original brown ribbed cloth with decorated board, as pictured. Spine very lightly creased, a bright copy. In archival acetate jacket. Named for a Negro folk saying; "the blacker the berry...the sweeter the juice", the book deals with the idea of discrimination within the black community based on varying skin shades. Thurman was at the center of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1925 Thurman moved to Harlem. During the next decade, he worked as a ghostwriter, a publisher, and editor, as well as writing novels, plays, and articles. As editor of The Messenger, a socialist journal addressed to blacks, he was the first to publish the adult-themed stories of Langston Hughes. He collaborated in founding the literary magazine Fire! ! devoted to the Younger Negro Artists. Thurman and others of the "Niggerati" (the deliberately ironic name he used for the young African American artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance) wanted to show the real lives of African Americans, both the good and the bad. Thurman believed that black artists should fully acknowledge and celebrate the arduous conditions of African American lives. Thurman's flat in a rooming house, at 267 West 136th Street in Harlem, became the central meeting place of African-American literary avant-garde and visual artists. He painted the walls red and black, which were the colors he used on the cover of Fire! ! Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Very Good. Hyan, Hans
Verlag der Neuen Gesellschaft, Berlin, 1929. First edition. 64pp. Light foxing overall, else very good in publisher's wraps. Despite the sensational nature of its design, the book was a careful sociological study of the nature of the police force and the complacency of bourgeois society. Following the capture and execution of Kurten authorities severed his head and split it in half to search for a physiological cause of his crimes; after none was found the severed head was mummified eventually making its way after World War II to the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum where it still resides today displayed hanging from a hook.Hyan, one of the more fascinating Bohemian characters of the Weimar period was at various times a cabaret artist and lyricist associated with Zum Hungrigen Pegasus, Silberne Punschterrine, and Rote Nachtigall, prolific crime novelist [his novel Die Verfuhrten (The Seduced) was suppressed on charges of lewdness], advocate for penal reform and an outspoken critic of bourgeois society exemplified in his song 'Lied der Arbeitslosen'.Scarce with OCLC locating a single holding at Yale. Hemingway, Ernest
London Cape 1929. A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1929. first state (with 'serious' spelt 'seriosu' to p.66). Very Good: tight and square binding in sharp pink cloth faded to the backstrip; bright gilt; rubbed to the spine tips; browning and light, sporadic spotting to the edge of the page block with a little dustiness to the top-edge; a few small marks and isolated spots internally, otherwise crisp and clean. IN a fine unclipped wrapper - a lovely copy. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Wodehouse, P G
Herbert Jenkins. McIlvaine A41b. Red cloth with black lettering. A very good example, which has foxing to the fore edges and off setting to the end papers. The binding remains tight and the text block is generally clean and free from spotting. The scarce dust wrapper is a very good example indeed, which has a few closed tears, and is rubbed in places (with a crease to the lower back cover) but otherwise has little fading and remains bright and crisp. The book is also SIGNED on the front free end paper 'with the author's compiments' and pleasingly dated in the month of publication (both Summer Lightning and the US version that preceded it, Fish Preferred, were published within about a fortnight of each other in July 1929). Housed in a custom made clamshell box. An extremely attractive example of this title, uncommon in dust wrapper and scarce signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
