George Wilhelm Pabst
Berlin: Original program for the legendary 1929 silent film. Replete with beautiful gravure-printed production photographs, including a stunning deep focus shot on the rear panel from a party scene in the film, with Louise Brooks at the center of attention. Film-Kurier was the first German film journal, published daily beginning in 1919. Film-Kurier's classic era lasted until 1933, when its publisher, Alfred Weiner, had to flee Germany because of his Jewish origins. The issues from this era remain striking to this day because they were printed using a gravure reproduction process. Each day's issue would focus on a single film. 8 pages, saddle stitched, with only the lightest wear at the edges. About Near Fine.

Kazan': [Tatglavlit], 1929. 71 pp.: ill., 7 pl. 17x13 cm. In original printed oversized wrappers. All edges red colored. Near fine. First and only edition. One of 300 copies. Extremely rare, especially in such mint condition. Text in Russian. Title page, front cover and captions in Russian and Tatar (in both Arabic and Latin alphabets). Kazan' in the 1920s has experienced one of the most independent and unique avant-garde art movements. Groups like Vsadnik, TatLEF, Podsolnechnik and others have proclaimed the new levels of the correlation between the artist and the book. As a result, the tradition of low runs almanacs and books existed in 1920s, with artworks that were created specially for those publications. Because of that Kazan' constructivism differs from the one in capitals as it was powered not only by the design tradition of the town but also by Tartar artists, the most famous of whom was Faik Tahirov, the tartar El Lissitzky. This explains the level of artistic significance of some of the student constructivist design from this book. This brochure describes the organization and work of the most famous Polygraphic School from its beginning in 1921 to 1927. It has an extensive and detailed information on number of students on each course each year, school budget, average month salary of students ('all graduates were assigned to printing houses of Kazan' the next day... there was a big quarrel between printers because of Tatar typesetters, everyone wanted to have one'), names of graduates for 1926 and 1927, economic state of the school, description of library and its … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kipling, R.
Kiev: Derzhavne Vid-vo Ukraini, 1929. 204 pp.: ill. 28x18 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Covers with tears and restoration, loss of the small piece and restoration of the spine, general soiling, stain on the upper side of few pages, small restoration of the edge of p.1. Illustrated throughout. Illustrations by Vasily Vatagin were made specially for this Ukrainian edition. Vasily Alekseevich Vatagin (1883-1969), Russian Soviet artist and sculptor who produced illustrations for around 50 books about animals. But 'The Jungle Book' is considered the main of his works: «Illustrations to the 'Mowgli' became my main achievment as I put all efforts into it, and for 40 years there were no such editions to compete with it». He went to India where he made hundreds of sketches. First version of illustrations was printed in 1922 in Russia and included around 120 drawings but for this Ukrainian edition he prepared new set of drawings. First Ukrainian translations were made in the beginning of the 20 th century, and in comparison with Russian translations many consider them more expressive. Also interesting how a paragraph about the priest in "Tiger! Tiger!" that was in the first English edition (1894) but was excluded by the author in all other printings was still translated by several early translators. This paragraph passed from one edition to another for almost a century. Our edition also has this paragraph. WorldCat locates no copies.

The Intimate Life of the Last Tsarina
1929. Written by Princess Catherine Radziwill, a notable Polish aristocrat. She was a prominent figure at the Imperial courts in Germany and Russia. To the preface Radziwill writes 'This is neither an apology nor an indictment of the last Empress of Russia... it is impossible not to defend her from baseless accusations which have been held at her head, yet it is equally out of the question to absolve her from a very large share of responsibility in regard to the terrible collapse of Russia.' This is the first edition of this text. Illustrated, with eight photographic plates of Alexandra, her family and her acquaintances. Radziwill penned many texts regarding the fall of the Russian empire and the revolution such as Russia's Decline and Fall: The Secret History of a Great Debacle and Secrets of a Dethroned Royalty . Bound in the 1980's after Asprey's acquisition of Zaehnsdorf bindery, who merged it with their previous acquisition of Sangorski and Sutcliff.
Philadelphia: Pierson Studio, 1929. Unbound. Near Fine. Printed cardboard chart with 28 slots provided to insert photographs of students. Measuring 14" x 11". 24 photographs of young black children have been inserted and captioned in ink with their names above the portraits. Four slots are blank: two appear to be missing, and the final two appear not to have been used (no names are added). Each photo is approximately 1.25" x 2" and has the date 1929 in the image. Two of the images have purple stars affixed below them. The students appear to be between 10-12 years of age and most appear to be pictured holding a book. We suspect some concerted triangulation would likely reveal the location of the school these young scholars attended but we have yet to discover it.

Ring Lardner
New York: 1929. I am not a book dealer, rather a private collector. I believe this to be a First Edition of Lardner's "Round Up", with a later edition dust jacket -- not a reproduction. The book is in good condition. As a non-professional I don't have the skill set to catagorize it as a dealer would. But the binding is tight and the cloth covers are in overall fine shape. The dust jacket has some chips. The signature is boldly inscribed, with a characteristic Lardner rhyme, "To Helen and Gene, with-- you know what I mean. Ring Lardner" Helen and Gene Buck were friends of Lardner's. Gene Buck was a prominent producer with the Zigfield Follies. Lardner wrote sketches and songs for Zigfield. This book includes a companion signature of Gene Buck laid in. Lardner, a master of the short story, died in 1933. His signature is rare. A wonderful copy any Lardner fan would love to own. HUBBLE, Edwin.
Washington: National Academy of Sciences, 1929. First edition. First edition, very rare offprint, of Hubble's landmark paper, which "made as great a change in man's conception of the universe as the Copernican revolution 400 years before" (DSB). This paper "is generally regarded as marking the discovery of the expansion of the universe" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers). It established what would later become known as Hubble's Law: that galaxies recede from us in all directions and more distant ones recede more rapidly in proportion to their distance. "... the repercussions were immense. The galaxies were not randomly dashing through the cosmos, but instead their speeds were mathematically related to their distances, and when scientists see such a relationship they search for a deeper significance. In this case, the significance was nothing less than the realization that at some point in history all the galaxies in the universe had been compacted into the same small region. This was the first observational evidence to hint at what we now call the Big Bang" (Simon Singh, Big Bang). Hubble's "result has come to be regarded as the outstanding discovery in twentieth-century astronomy" (DSB). Autograph material by Hubble of any kind, even his signature, is hardly ever seen on the market. In the early 1920s most astronomers believed that the universe was static and unchanging on the large scale. Einstein himself had introduced his 'cosmological constant' in 1917 to allow solutions of the equations of general relativity corresponding to a static universe. Two such solutio … [Click Below for Full Description]

A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. California: There is some general wear, I noticed two Adams photos with staining and smudging but others seemed fine. Some foxing and modest flaws, also two front blank pages have several newspaper clippings pasted in, otherwise, nothing major, all together good condition. This is a mixed group of six early Sierra Club Bulletins from 1929 to 1934 that have been bound together. A great deal of rich, interesting material back when the West Coast was so much more natural and wild then it is today. A great record. This is a mixed group. It is bound as a library might but this is NOT an ex-library copy. The following issues are included: Vol. 15 Number 1 (Feb. 1930), Vol. 14 Number 1 (Feb. 1929), Vol.16 Number 1 (Feb. 1931), Vol. 17 Number 1 (Feb 1931), Vol. 18 Number 1 (Feb. 1933) and Vol. 19 Number 3 (June 1934). Of special interest are the many early full-page photos by Ansel Adams. There are a total of 64 full page black and white photos (this includes two front pieces) and also in this volume are two articles by Ansel Adams. For lovers of his work this gives great depth and background. Those photos are mostly accompanying articles and besides Adams there are articles and may other fine photographs by others. But the value is in the early Ansel Adams material. These six Sierra Club Bulletins are from 1929 to 1934. I spotted a copy of his important work: Taos Pueblo, that a rare book dealer in New York has priced at $85,000 and it was published in 1930. It has been bound, as was commonly done, without the covers but it has preserved the work. There is some staining and smudgi … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Edition An important key book in Weimar-era film aesthetics by Hans Richter (1888-1976), a critical German avant-garde artist who went back and forth between the media of film, painting and graphic art. He created a number of important silent experimental films in the 1920s (and he always claimed that his 1921 Rhythmus 21 was the first experimental film ever made). An early and highly influential study of experimental film published to coincide with the 1929 Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart. Illustrated with numerous photographs, film stills and film strips, with photographic reproductions by many of the important avant-garde artists of the era (including Man Ray, Duchamp, Leger and Richter himself). A fascinating book from several perspectives: not only one of the first books to attempt to characterize early avant-garde filmmaking, but also a lushly-produced volume, with hundreds of stills from various early experimental films, speaking not only to concept but also to technique and method. The stills selected by Richter include not only strips and stills of the films discussed, but also rare images of candid on-set images of the filmmakers at work. Small quarto, 125 pp. Some starting, but contents are crisp, overall NEAR FINE in VERY GOOD dust jacket, with some chips and tears. FREE SHIPPING WITHIN CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES! YEATS. W. B.
The Cuala Press. Dublin, Ireland. 1929. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (8.6 x 6 inches). LIMITED EDITION. One of 425 copies printed and published by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats on paper made in Ireland. Original cloth-backed blue paper covered boards, printed paper label to spine, titles stamped to front cover in black. Plain blue endpapers. Covers lightly marked and the front free endpaper slightly creased otherwise this is a very good copy. ------ Wade 163. ---- Yeats's Packet for Ezra Pound presents one side of an intriguingly unlikely literary and personal friendship; Yeats, who lived with Pound more than once (first in Ashdown Forest, where Pound's ostensibly secretarial status produced the drastic renovation of Yeats's poetic style in his 1914 collection "Responsibilities", and later in Rapallo during the late 1920s, the period of association with which Yeats's "Packet" is concerned), describes Pound as a man "whose art is the opposite of mine, whose criticism commends what I most condemn, a man with whom I should quarrel more than with anyone else if we were not united by affection." This copy has a newspaper-clipped portrait of Yeats (with an extremely stern expression) laid in.

Marc Elder
Paris: Editions Pittoresques, 1929. See pictures. Some shelf wear to slip case with edge wear. Book has darkening at spine; the smoke from the cannon has one small chip, and there is a 1 cm crack at the bottom of the spine. The front joint looks as though it may have been repaired but it was very well done and hard to perceive. Foreedges of binding are a little darker too but that may just be a product of the binding process. I've looked through the pages and only find one pencil price on the last blank endpaper at rear (erased, but visible). A very handsome book, both inside and out. A very handsome book, with an attractive fine binding on the outside, and bright and beautiful illustrations (pochoir - each illustration hand-colored by stencil) within. 25 pochoir illustrations including a printer's mark, frontis, 8 full-page plates, and 15 chapter heading; the colophon is also colored. One of only 425 examples, numbered 106. Printed on paper "velin de Rives". About the Binding - The following excerpt is from a mid-20th century advertisement for the work (clipping included); I will note that what the writer calls "inlay", may actually be onlay but it gives the impression of inlay: "4to, full red french levant-morocco, front cover with a sailing vessel formed by inlays of vari-colored Morocco with some tooling in blind surrounded by double inlays of brown and grey morocco forming a geometric border; back with unusual inlay of a firing cannon, the smoke of which contains the gilt lettering; innter geometric gilt borders with corner inlays of brown Morocco, gilt hand marbled … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROMANOVA, Grand Duchess Victoria Fedorovna, Jacques and Julie-Jacques NOZAL (artists).
"Unusual illuminated manuscript on vellum, written and decorated by the Grand Duchess of Russia - beautifully bound and featuring four silver plates in a great art-deco style. The manuscript text, written both in Russian and English, is richly adorned with vignettes in turquoise, red and gold. However, its most striking and unusual feature are the four metal plates bound in, engraved on both sides. They were created by Julie Nozal, a French wood engraver described once as ‘the only woman who makes incunabula’ (Lucette). Nozal’s work focused on medieval techniques and inspiration, and is very recognizable, informed both by her Catholicism and by her artistic and aristocratic lineage. She grew up in an environment of high wealth, privilege and patronage of the arts; her father was an enamellist and her father-in-law a painter. In her artistic career Nozal derived inspiration from early European art, following artists who shared her devotion to the Church and handcrafted books. Specially produced in collaboration with Grand Duchess Victoria of Russia, heir apparent to the throne. The last metal plate is inscribed ‘Fait par / S.A.I. Victoria / Grande Duchesse / de Russie / Jacques Nozal / Julie Nozal / achevé en 1929 St Briac’. Nozals’ family home ‘Les Emaux’ is still located in the small town of Saint Briac outside of St. Malo, in Brittany, France. The town became famous for its royal inhabitants including Marie of Romania. After the Russian Revolution, Grand Duchess Victoria Fedorovna of Russia settled there too, along with her husband Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich.

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1929. Limited Edition. Wraps. Very good +. Angelo, Valenti. One of approx. 30 copies, folio size, [10] unnumbered leaves, signed by Edwin Grabhorn and Valenti Angelo. A keepsake offered to members of the Zamorano Club at the joint Roxburghe-Zamorano Club meeting, held in October, 1929, printed by The Grabhorn Press and "Assembled for Members of the Zamorano Club". As is written in the foreword by Ed Grabhorn, "For the past few years there has been accumulating extra pages from various books. It has occured to us that a few of these....might be of some interest to you". They close by stating "[t]his seclusion [of printing "in overalls"] has created such a timidity that while the honor conferred on Mr. Angelo & myself cannot be ignored, yet the fear of having to make an after dinner speech has frightened us into further seclusion"; beneath are the signatures of both Edwin Grabhorn and Valenti Angelo, with what appears to be the date of "Oct (?) 29" written in at the bottom of a lovely multi-line flourish beneath Valenti Angelo's name. The "seclusion" comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek, as their schedules simply did not permit the two men to travel to Los Angeles for the joint meeting. The specimens included are from 1926-1929, taken from nine books that both Valenti Angelo and Edwin Grabhorn worked on. Those works are: "The Letter of Amerigo Vespucci," 1926; "Oscar Wilde's Salome," 1927; "The Book of Ruth," 1927; "Two Unpublished Manuscripts of A.C. First edition of the famous novel of the German metropolis. Includes the rare, well-preserved original dustjacket by George Salter: the revolutionary visual design combined Döblin's specially written blurb with seemingly naive elements of poster art and advertising, creating a collage of word and image that mirrors the author's artistic principle of montage. The potential customer is made a reader before he has even opened the book (cf. S. Fischer Verlag, Marbach cat. 396). - Top edge slightly duststained. JONES, David (1895-1974), illustrator - Samuel Taylor
Bristol: Douglas Cleverdon for the Fanfare Press, 1929. 4to (315 x 248 mm; 12 1/4 x 10 inches). 10 copper-engraved plates by Jones. Original quarter gilt-lettered cream cloth, green boards. Spine slightly soiled, light wear at extremities. Item #403565 LIMITED EDITION, number 265 of 480 total copies. Coleridge's poem had haunted Jones since his childhood. "Though but little known as an engraver in the 1920's, he was to be an inspired choice, and undertook his commission with great seriousness and devotion. From the first, Jones saw his task as not one of simple illustration, but as the attempt to realise in visual terms the symbolic imagery arisen from the deeps of Coleridge's imagination. Jones tells us that between 150 and 200 preliminary drawings were made in response to the commission" (Peter Larkin, "David Jones and the Ancient Mariner," in: The Coleridge Bulletin Conference Issue, [unnumbered] July 1996, pp. 2-20). In 1964, while working on the foreword to a new edition, Jones wrote to the art critic Kenneth Clark, "it was quite a business finding a copper-plate printer [in 1929]. However we found one. Even in 1929 it was becoming difficult because printing from copper-plates had of course ceased as a normal means of reproduction years before then. And as you know the process is totally different from wood-block printing. I wouldn't be surprised if very soon it will be impossible to get copper-plate engravings printed" (quoted in Thomas Dilworth, "Letters from David Jones to Kenneth Clark," in: The Burlington Magazine 142, no. 1165 (2000), p. 223).

DOS PASSOS (John)
Conditions de vente Expédition Paiement À propos de la librairie Visitez notre boutique 22336 John DOS PASSOS Manhattan-Transfer. Tome I Paris, Gallimard, (février) 1929. 1 vol. (170 x 220 mm) de 263 pp. et [2] ff. Broché. Précieux et rare exemplaire offert par l'auteur : "To Maurice Saillet, very cordially, John Dos Passos". [Click Below for Full Description]
