PARSONS, E.H. and Phineas
Providence, Rhode Island: 1919-1926; 1926-1929. Near Fine. Softcover. Two photo albums. Oblong quartos. Measuring 11" x 7". String-tied black textured leather over flexible paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Both albums are very good with rips and tears on the boards; the later album's rear board is detached but present, with near fine photographs. Two photo albums kept by a member of the Parsons' family in New England between 1919 and 1929 mostly in Rhode Island and Connecticut. The albums contain a massive amount of photos, nearly 800, all capturing the upper middle class family, who made their money in the brass industry, through the decade of the 1920s. The family were avid boating enthusiasts and the album is full of photos of a variety of boats and small ships, as well as of people posing on and around them. Most of the vessels are named in the album including sailboats named *Swift Wind* and *Resolute*, as well as *Mischief* and the H.M.S. *Wraith*. These photos also show men in the rigging of the ships repairing and working on them as well as ships on land being built and painted. A variety of family members of all ages can be seen enjoying the excursions from grandma to the (obviously well-beloved) family dog. One group of photos shows the family on a trip to Quebec and includes the family boat, *Nada*, as well as photos of the various waterways. There is also a sketch of a sai … [Click Below for Full Description]

1929. Extraordinary Association copy, signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page: " For Henry Pfeiffer, yours very truly, Ernest Hemingway, Piggot-December 31-1932". Henry Pfeiffer was a philanthropist and uncle to Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Paul Pfeiffer, Pauline's father, and uncles Henry and G. A. founded Pfeiffer Pharmaceutical Company. Paul left the company and moved his family to Piggott, Arkansas to make a life for his family. This copy was signed and inscribed in Piggott, the family's estate, to his wife's uncle Henry. Ernest's marriage to Pauline and the influence of the Pfeiffer family was incredibly important to Hemingway's life, career, and literary endeavors. During the course of their thirteen year marriage, Hemingway started and/or finished "A Farewell to Arms", "Winner Take Nothing", "Green Hills of Africa", "To Have and Have Not", "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories", and "For Whom the Bells Tolls". Pauline's father Paul even renovated the family barn in Piggott into a workspace for Hemingway. Uncle G. A. Pfeiffer was the couple's benefactor, having purchased homes for them in Key West and Paris, as well as purchasing cars for them, and more importantly, financing an African Safari in 1933 which became the basis of Hemingway's novels, "Green Hills of Africa", as well as for the short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". This book, A Farewell to Arms was dedicated to G. A. Pfeiffer by Hemingway. "A Farewell to Arms" also has a Pfeiffer connection with the dramatic endi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Moscow]: Ob-vo russkikh skul'pturov, 1929. 14 pp.: ill. 22,15 cm. In original wrappers. Near fine. Very rare. One of 1000 copies. The catalogue for the 3rd exhibition (of only 4 held by the Society) that was held in 1929 includes introduction "ORS in 1929" by A. Bakushinsky (short history of the society and its current state), a numbered list of 82 works organized by artists in alphabetical order (first real members and then a few participants not from society), a list of members with their current posts (chairman I.M. Chaikov). Among members were Vatagin, Sandomirskaya, Chaikov, Shadr and others. The Society (ORS) was founded in 1926 by former members of the Moscow Union of Artists and Sculptors. The impetus for the creation was the success of the sculptural department of the OBIS exhibition held in early 1925. The Society consisted of almost all famous Moscow sculptors, and their ranks was regularly replenished by the graduates of the sculpture faculty of Vkhutemas-Vkhutein. About 20 people were constantly members, 10-15 more sculptors were involved as exhibitors (candidates). Many participants were simultaneously members of other societies and unions: Korolev and Kepinov - OMH, Chaikov - ''4 iskusstva'', Shadr - AHRR; however, the ORS flourished tolerance for various trends in art (including the ''left''). The meetings were held mainly in the workshop of Ryndziunskaia. Reports were read and discussed on the problems of sculpture like Ternovets made a report «On Contemporary Sculpture in the West», architect Konstantin Melnikov with a report «On Cooperation of Sculptors … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHITEHEAD, Alfred North.
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1929. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine heavily faded, light wear at spine ends, cloth scuffed, shaken. A sound copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy from the author to Ralph Monroe Eaton, inscribed on the title page "Ralph Eaton with love from Alfred and Evelyn Oct 27, 1929" [Evelyn being his wife]. Eaton and Whitehead were close associates, both working on epistemology and logic, teaching in the same department at Harvard and at one time giving a joint course in philosophy there. Eaton committed suicide a couple of years after the inscription date. Inserted in the book is a bifolium with four pages of Eaton's notes; also with Eaton's pencilled ticks to the contents page, some pencilled underlining and lines in margins, and a single line of notes on rear endpaper. Anything in Whitehead's hand is desirable, as his family destroyed all of his papers, letters and manuscripts after his death. Process and Reality is one of the fundamental works in process philosophy. "In the session 1927-8 Whitehead returned to Britain in order to deliver the Gifford lectures at Edinburgh University. These, which were published in 1929 under the title Process and Reality, an Essay in Cosmology, may be regarded as the definitive exposition of his mature philosophy, to which he gave the name 'philosophy of organism' but which is commonly referred to as 'process philosophy'. Process philosophy contrasts with the tradition of substance philosophy which began with Descartes and which, characterized by the dualism of m … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - ROUSSEAU). GIDE, ANDRÉ
Paris: Librairie Gallimard, 1929. No. H.LXXXII of 547 printed on Holland paper. In a dramatic binding by modern French master Florent Rousseau, this is the first volume of a trilogy that examines marriage with Gide's typically piercing psychological insight. Bearing the same title as the classic Molière play "School for Wives," this work records in diary form a woman's evolution from starry-eyed fiancée to disillusioned wife. Gide (1869-1951) was described in his New York Times obituary as "France's greatest contemporary man of letters . . . judged the greatest French writer of this century by the literary cognoscenti." He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1947. Binder Florent Rousseau frequently employs non-traditional materials, particularly metal, in his bindings. After receiving his baccalaureate, Rousseau studied binding at the Central Union of Decorative Arts and took gilding courses at the Estienne school. After working for three years at Établissements Julien to perfect his leatherwork, he opened his own atelier in Paris in 1988. As a binder, he endeavors to link his coverings to the content of the volume. Here, the iridescent abalone shells, which change depending on the angle from which they are viewed, are a perfect metaphor for the changing perceptions of the novel's heroine. In 2003, Rousseau received the Liliane Bettencourt Award for his binding of "L'Encre des tranchées," and a 30-year retrospective of his work was held at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana in 2018.. 168 x 109 mm. HUBBLE, Edwin.
[Washington, D.C.]: Carnegie Institution, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. <p>First edition, a copy of the very rare offprint with outstanding provenance, of Hubble's landmark paper, which "made as great a change in man's conception of the universe as the Copernican revolution 400 years before" (DSB). This paper "is generally regarded as marking the discovery of the expansion of the universe" (<em>Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers</em>). It established what would later become known as Hubble's Law: that galaxies recede from us in all directions and more distant ones recede more rapidly in proportion to their distance. "... the repercussions were immense. The galaxies were not randomly dashing through the cosmos, but instead their speeds were mathematically related to their distances, and when scientists see such a relationship they search for a deeper significance. In this case, the significance was nothing less than the realization that at some point in history all the galaxies in the universe had been compacted into the same small region. This was the first observational evidence to hint at what we now call the Big Bang" (Simon Singh, <em>Big Bang</em>). Hubble's "result has come to be regarded as the outstanding discovery in twentieth-century astronomy" (DSB). <p><em><span>Provenance</span></em><span>: Herbert McLean Evans (1882-1971), anatomist, endocrinologist and bibliophile (bookplate); <em>Important Scientific Books</em>: <em>The Richard Green Library</em>, Christie's, New York, 17 June 2008, lot 185.</span></p> <p>In the early 1920s most astronomers believe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Keller, Helen
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, NY, 1929. Early printing of Keller's autobiography. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Very truly yours Helen Keller." Near fine in a good dust jacket. Foreword by Nella Braddy. Uncommon signed and in the original dust jacket. Helen Keller was an author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become widely known through the dramatic depictions of the play and film The Miracle Worker. Her birthplace in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, is now a museum[1] and sponsors an annual "Helen Keller Day". Her birthday on June 27 is commemorated as Helen Keller Day in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and was authorized at the federal level by presidential proclamation by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, the 100th anniversary of her birth. Contrasting spine label, lettered in gilt. Limited to 550 copies, of which this is copy #352, signed by both Wyeth and Palmer. One of the scarcest of all Wyeth books rarely found complete with a complete suite of the extra illustrations and in original box. Quite simply, a stunning copy of a rarity. Translated by G.H. Palmer and illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. In a preface, G.H. Palmer stated his aims: "To give to the thought of Homer a mre direct and simple expression than has hitherto been judged admissible; to be at once minutely faithful to the Greek original and keep out of sight the fact that either an original or a translator exists; to present especially the objective, unreflective, realistic, and non-literary features of the primitive story; to report in all their delicacy the events which Homer reports; to exhibit his attitude of mind toward them, and to produce again the impression produced by him that things did happen just so.. Ill.: N.C. Wyeth. Fine in Near Fine Original Box .
