1929. Extraordinary Association copy, signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page: " For Henry Pfeiffer, yours very truly, Ernest Hemingway, Piggot-December 31-1932". Henry Pfeiffer was a philanthropist and uncle to Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Paul Pfeiffer, Pauline's father, and uncles Henry and G. A. founded Pfeiffer Pharmaceutical Company. Paul left the company and moved his family to Piggott, Arkansas to make a life for his family. This copy was signed and inscribed in Piggott, the family's estate, to his wife's uncle Henry. Ernest's marriage to Pauline and the influence of the Pfeiffer family was incredibly important to Hemingway's life, career, and literary endeavors. During the course of their thirteen year marriage, Hemingway started and/or finished "A Farewell to Arms", "Winner Take Nothing", "Green Hills of Africa", "To Have and Have Not", "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories", and "For Whom the Bells Tolls". Pauline's father Paul even renovated the family barn in Piggott into a workspace for Hemingway. Uncle G. A. Pfeiffer was the couple's benefactor, having purchased homes for them in Key West and Paris, as well as purchasing cars for them, and more importantly, financing an African Safari in 1933 which became the basis of Hemingway's novels, "Green Hills of Africa", as well as for the short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". This book, A Farewell to Arms was dedicated to G. A. Pfeiffer by Hemingway. "A Farewell to Arms" also has a Pfeiffer connection with the dramatic endi … [Click Below for Full Description]

1929 was the last between the war Wisden I upgraded , it took me some time to find a nice one as the weight of the book does tend to control the condition, ditto with '28. Looks like a touch up on the spine gilt has occurred. There is a line to the front board and a couple of marks to the rear , slight hinge weakness which is very common for a 29 and some wear to the top of the yellow paste downs, looks like they are removed names. So this book has had some work on it. Clean inside. Benno s Notes : top right corner front cover creased. Slight tear to centre of spine inside back cover. Oval stain top of right hand margin p671 More information on request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Also shown are headshots of the stars Willy Fritsch and Gerda Maurus, as well as director/writer Fritz Lang (front cover) and writer Thea von Harbou. Text accompanying the images discusses various stages of the production from its initial development through filming, the stars of the film, and includes discussions the scientific aspects of the film by various scientists, including rocketry and astronautics pioneer Dr. Hermann Oberth, who served as technical advisor on the film. Two short sections are written by Lang and Harbou themselves. Hemingway, Ernest
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929. Signed limited first edition of this early Hemingway classic, which established him among the American masters. Tall octavo, original white parchment over green boards. One of 510 copies signed by Ernest Hemingway, this is number 128. Near fine in the rare original slipcase which is in very good condition, lacking the small bottom panel. A nice example. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield—weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. Farewell To Arms is the only signed limited edition of Ernest Hemingway's works. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Hemingway Ernest
Jonathan Cape, 1929. First English edition, published the same year as the first American edition. 8vo, in a very handsome Asprey of London binding of full red crushed morocco, the boards framed in gilt, the spine with tall gilt tooled raised bands creating gilt framed compartments, four of which with handsome central gilt tool of crossed arms and bugle, gilt lettering in two compartments and gilt date at the foot, board edges gilt tooled, as are the turn-ins, red marbled endpapers, a.e.g. 350. A very fine and handsome copy both inside and out. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION IN AN IMPRESSIVE AND HANDSOME ASPREY BINDING of this true high-spot of 20th century literature and one of the Modern Library's top 100 novels of that century. Hemingway's moving and tragic tale of an American service man and the British nurse he falls in love with during the horrors of the first World War was only his second published novel. Hemingway's characters in even such an early novel as this, reflect the honesty and resonance that is so distinctive to his prose. The novel was based on Hemingway's own experiences serving in the Italian campaigns during the First World War. The inspiration for Catherine Barkley was Agnes von Kurowsky, a real nurse who cared for Hemingway in a hospital in Milan after he had been wounded. He had planned to marry her but she spurned his love when he returned to America. The Asprey bindings were produced for the firm by both Sangorski and Sutcliffe and by Zaehnsdorf, both highly important English binderies.

Little Brown, Boston, 1929. First edition. Fine in a lovely dustwrapper that is just about fine except for a crease on the spine and some tiny edge tears. Scarce first book, a novel about life on the Erie Canal, by the author of *Drums Along the Mohawk*. This novel was the basis for Henry Fonda's first film, *The Farmer Takes a Wife*, directed by Victor Fleming and also featuring Janet Gaynor. Fonda had played the lead on Broadway but was only offered the film role after both Gary Cooper and Joel McCrea passed on it because of other commitments. It was later remade by Henry Levin into a musical with Betty Grable, Dale Robertson, and Thelma Ritter. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

HUBBLE, Edwin
Carnegie Institution, [Washington, D.C.], 1929. First edition, a copy of the very rare offprint with outstanding provenance, of Hubble's landmark paper, which "made as great a change in man's conception of the universe as the Copernican revolution 400 years before" (DSB). This paper "is generally regarded as marking the discovery of the expansion of the universe" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers). It established what would later become known as Hubble's Law: that galaxies recede from us in all directions and more distant ones recede more rapidly in proportion to their distance. ". the repercussions were immense. The galaxies were not randomly dashing through the cosmos, but instead their speeds were mathematically related to their distances, and when scientists see such a relationship they search for a deeper significance. In this case, the significance was nothing less than the realization that at some point in history all the galaxies in the universe had been compacted into the same small region. This was the first observational evidence to hint at what we now call the Big Bang" (Simon Singh, Big Bang). Hubble's "result has come to be regarded as the outstanding discovery in twentieth-century astronomy" (DSB). Provenance: Herbert McLean Evans (1882-1971), anatomist, endocrinologist and bibliophile (bookplate); Important Scientific Books: The Richard Green Library, Christie's, New York, 17 June 2008, lot 185. In the early 1920s most astronomers believed that the universe was static and unchanging on the large scale. Einstein himself had introduced his 'cosmologica … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston S. Churchill
1929. The World Crisis: The Aftermath Winston S. Churchill London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1929 First British edition, in dust jacket Condition: Very Good Jacket Condition: Very Good This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fifth and penultimate volume of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the "War to end all wars". This volume deals with the postwar years 1918 to 1928. Though the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis preceded the British, many consider the British edition aesthetically superior, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Moreover, the cloth binding of this fifth volume proved particularly susceptible to blistering. Condition of this first edition, first printing is very good in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is bright, square and tight, with shelf wear to the bottom edge, minor wear to the spine ends and corners, and a barely discernible partial ring stain to the upper front cover. Blistering is nominal for the edition, with just a hint at the lower hinges. The contents remain respectably bright with a crisp, unread feel. We find no previous ownership marks. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the … [Click Below for Full Description]
