Original orange wrappers with photographic illustrations laid onto front covers; highly illustrated throughout; covers slightly dursty, one cover with loss to outer margin, internally very good.         Good-bye to All That, an Autobiography, True First Issue with Sassoon Poem

Jonathan Cape, London 1929 - A very good copy in a good+ dust jacket by Len Lye, some minor wear to edges and chipping to head of spine, not price clipped. This is a copy of the elusive true First Edition, First Issue. This edition with the infamous Sassoon poem on pp.341-343, removed from all later impressions and editions. The story of the suppression of this issue is well documented and most copies were apparently destroyed, it is generally believed that few survived. The book printed a poem Sassoon had written to Graves in rhyming letter form and Sassoon was mortified by this inclusion demanding the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages in the second impression, this was done and it these later editions that are most frequently found. It is regarded that these honest and touching lines are some of the best Sassoon ever wrote. Original salmon pink cloth, spine gilt. Complete with the distinctive Len Lye dust wrapper. 448pp. It was in November of 1929 that Sassoon had written to a friend, "I deeply resent his printing my verse letter to him & shall threaten Cape with legal action (for breach of copyright) unless he undertakes to cut it out". An exceptional copy of this scarce title. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Good-bye To All That.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1929. An Autobiography. Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 7 plates. Spine and top edge a little toned, partly unopened; an excellent copy in the dust jacket with lightly browned spine and a couple of nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression, second issue, with the infamous Sassoon poem excised and replaced with cancels and asterisks. The story of the suppression of this issue is well recorded. The book printed a poem Sassoon had written to Graves as a letter. Sassoon was horrified and demanded the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages. This was done and a second issue produced with asterisks marking where the passages had been. Connolly included this work in his list of 100 key books of the Modern Movement noting the peculiar genius of an author to transform autobiography into art. With the publisher's advertisement laid in.

Early Churches in Syria, Fourth to Seventh Centuries - Part One, History; Part II. Analysis (Complete)

Princeton, NJ: The Department of Art and Archaeology of Princeton University, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. Folio (15 1/4 x 11 1/2"). xx, 274, [2]pp. Modern full burgundy cloth, with gold lettering to spine. Completed by Earl Baldwin Smith several years after Butler's death (1922), "Early Churches in Syria" is a scarce monograph on early Christian architecture in the Middle East. Much of our information about early Syrian churches depends on what Butler saw. Howard Crosby Butler taught architecture at Princeton University for over 20 years and led three expeditions to regions now in Syria and northern Jordan. He spent altogether over a year in the field, working rapidly, and amassing a vast quantity of observations and measurements which were used by Smith to complete this book. This work is divided into two parts (History and Analysis), and is lavishly illustrated throughout with 288 in-text b/w photographic reproductions and illustrations (floor plans, architectural drawings, etc..). Minor shelf wear. Ex-library copy with remnants of sticker at tail of spine, bookplate on inside of front cover, pocket on inside of back cover, and stamp at upper and lower paper edges. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.

Early Churches in Syria, Fourth to Seventh Centuries - Part One, History; Part II. Analysis (Complete)

The Department of Art and Archaeology of Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 1929 - Folio (15 1/4 x 11 1/2"). xx, 274, [2]pp. This work is divided into two parts (History and Analysis), and is lavishly illustrated throughout with 288 in-text b/w photographic reproductions and illustrations (floor plans, architectural drawings, etc.). Minor shelf wear. Ex-library copy with remnants of sticker at tail of spine, bookplate on inside of front cover, pocket on inside of back cover, and stamp at upper and lower paper edges. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
