Photo Album]: Two Photo Albums: New England Family, Boating, and the U.S.S. Shenandoah

Providence, Rhode Island 1929 - Two photo albums. Oblong quartos. Measuring 7" x 11". String-tied black textured leather over flexible paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 778 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs between the two albums, measuring between 2.5" x 3" and 5.5" x 8", some with captions. Both albums are very good with rips and tears on the boards; the later album's rear board is detached but present, with near fine photographs. Two photo albums kept by a member of the Parsons' family in New England between 1919 and 1929 mostly in Rhode Island and Connecticut. The albums contain a massive amount of photos, nearly 800, all capturing the upper middle class family, who made their money in the brass industry, through the decade of the 1920s. The family were avid boating enthusiasts and the album is full of photos of a variety of boats and small ships, as well as of people posing on and around them. Most of the vessels are named in the album including sailboats named Swift Wind and Resolute, as well as Mischief and the H.M.S. Wraith. These photos also show men in the rigging of the ships repairing and working on them as well as ships on land being built and painted. A variety of family members of all ages can be seen enjoying the excursions from grandma to the (obviously well-beloved) family dog. One group of photos shows the family on a trip to Quebec and includes the family boat, Nada, as well as photos of the various waterways. There is also a sketch of a sailboat laid-in, drawn on letterhead, which reads, "on board the Pontiac." Also documented throughout the album are a number of births in the family with photos of chubby newborns with their nurses, mothers, and fathers. Later in the album there are a number of photos of the USS Shenandoah which was the first of four U.S. Navy rigid airships. The 14 photos show the Shenandoah "tied up to the USS Patoka" docked in Newport in August of 1924. Patoka was the first ship used as an "airship tender" and in 1924 an "experimental mooring mast" was added to the oiler as well as a variety of accommodations for the crew of both the oiler and the airship. These photos show the Shenandoah moored in Newport shortly after the mast was erected. To test the mast and airship the Shenandoah flew from New Jersey to California and then continued on to Washington State, making it the first airship to fly across North America. A little over a year after it was constructed the airship was caught in a storm over Ohio and crashed. Also included in the album are obituaries for Phineas F. Parsons and Edmund Hayden (E.H.) Parsons, who appear to be the patriarchs of the family. Both men had ties with the brass industry. Phineas, the elder Parsons, who died at age 91 was a well-regarded member of the jewelry community with a career spanning over 60 years. E.H. died around the same time as his father after being "suddenly stricken" with an illness at 73. He spent 30 years in the brass trade before retiring to take over Locust Farms in Warwick. One photo shows the family on "Gramp's Birthday" on the farm in 1922.An interesting look at a New England family in the 1920s with an emphasis on the boating culture of a Rhode Island.

        MUMMY'S BEDTIME STORY BOOK

London: Cecil Palmer. 1929. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Original pictorial paper covered boards. Illustrated endpapers, 12 full-page coloured illustrations and further smaller colour illustrations to every page by Jessie M. King. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the covers bright and virtually unworn with just a small bump to the far edge of the lower board. The contents are entirely complete and without loose, torn or creased pages. Other than a few light foxing spots to the prelims and text block edge the pages are clean and bright throughout. An excellent example of this notoriously fragile and beautifully illustrated production. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.         Bumpsies The Golf Ball Kids

Roycrofters, East Aurora, NY 1929 - Published by The Roycrofters in 1929. The book is 88 pages and illustrated with drawings, half of which are in full color, drawn by the author. Roycrofters were a specialty publisher working in the early part of the twentieth century in upstate New York, that followed in the tradition of the British Arts and Crafts movement. McMahan was a noted author and illustrator of children's stories. The book depicts drawings of children as little golf balls. The front cover is titled: "Bumpsies: The Golf-Ball Kids." The book was published in two editions. Red cloth binding without jacket. Since it was published as a children's book, it is tough to find because it wasn't thought to be valuable, nor was it collected. The book is sought after by collectors of Roycrofters as well as golf collectors. The story is about an effeminate little boy caddie named Freckles who is befriended by a family of golf ball shaped little people called Bumpsies. Donovan & Jerris M24340. This copy is quite good with only minor chipping to the spine, otherwise boards are in very good shape, no writing or other issues inside the book. The plentiful color illustrations are vibrant and imaginative. We specialize in golf books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The House at Pooh Corner. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1929 - Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front cover gilt, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco soalnder box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine bumped, partial tanning to half title and colophon, dust jacket nicked and chipped to corners. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Third edition. With an original pen and ink drawing on the title page by Shepard of Winnie-the-Pooh in full traditional Russian costume including a fur hat and playing a balalaika, signed beneath the image. Rare thus. Milne began planning his final Pooh book in 1927. Three years of intense publicity were taking their toll on the family, and Milne longed to return full-time to adult literature, telling his brother that "after one more Pooh book I must think of something else. In fact, it's time I tried a novel" (Thwaite p. 328). Christopher Robin was growing up, soon to leave for boarding school, and The House at Pooh Corner would be a farewell. But first there was an introduction to be made. Milne had bought his son a stuffed tiger, "Tigger", and told Shepard that he was longing to see the illustrations for this new character, who would become one of the author's most popular creations. Published on 11 October 1928, The House at Pooh Corner was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness. "The Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was 'sad to see the stories end'" (Thwaite p. 336); but the stories have never ended for the millions of children who continue to wander the Hundred Acre Wood, where "a little boy and his bear will always be playing".

MAGNIFIQUE EXEMPLAIRE! Original design by Sonia Delaunay

Pen on paper, 90 x 75 mm, sheet 240 x 175 mm, initialled by the artist lower right and inscribed by her above the work 'A Monsieur et Madame Jacob Baal Teshuva. Sonia Delaunay, Paris 20-12-69'; laid down on archival board. Delaunay's sketched design, in the form of a monogram representing her initials 'S D', is inscribed by the artist for her friends Jacob Baal-Teshuna (b. 1929), renowned author, art critic and collector, and his wife, Aviva (1940-2016), who was also an artist. The career of Russian-born colourist Sonia Delaunay spanned seven decades, from the Belle Epoque to the 1970s. After studying in Germany, in 1905 she settled in Paris, where she would remain for most of her life. From around 1911, along with her husband, Robert Delaunay, she pioneered a particular branch of Cubism known as Simultanism (or Orphism, as it was termed by Apollinaire), which was based on the colour theory developed in the nineteenth century by Michel Eugène Chevreul (De la loi du contraste simultanée des couleurs, Paris, 1839). In this abstract style, form is subjugated to colour: the vital rhythm of a work is created by the interaction of overlapping and juxtaposed contrasting colours. As a multi-disciplinary artist, Delaunay constantly refined her Simultanist approach, producing work up until the late 1970s in a diversity of media and across the applied arts - notably in designs for theatre and ballet, fashion, textiles and architecture - and collaborating with writers such as Blaise Cendrars and Tristan Tzara. A major figure in the European avant-garde, her distinctive abstractionist aesthetic has influenced artists from Paul Klee through to contemporary fashion designers.         Echoes of Larger Life; A Selection from the Early Correspondence Of Victoria Lady Welby

Jonathan Cape, London 1929 - Light brown cloth on boards. No writing or damage. The author is clearly aware of philosophical concerns associated with John Locke, and later, Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce - what is called 'semiotics' today. Others of this author's titles, Significs and Language, and Links and Clues, appear on a want list but do not appear in their original editions as being for sale. The book we offer is the original edition of 1929 in very good condition, the only book of this title found. 292 pp. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]
