Gods' Man: A Novel in Woodcuts

New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. SIGNED. Octavo [21 cm] 1/4 black cloth with illustrated boards and a paper title label on the backstrip. There are short splits in the cloth at the ends of the spine. The front hinge is a little soft. There are small losses from the top fore edge corners of the first two pages. The larger loss is from the front free endsheet, and measures 2" deep by 3/4" wide. The first of Ward's six wordless novels that is told exclusively through 144 striking woodcut illustrations. Lynd Ward was not only a talented printmaker, but he was a socially-conscious storyteller as well. "Gods' Man," a modern morality play, was the work that built his reputation. It depicts the deadly bargaining of the soul that a struggling young artist is willing to make. This copy is inscribed by Lynd Ward on the half title page.

Our Exagmination Round His Factification For Incamination of Work in Progress.

Paris: Shakespeare and Company,, 1929. With letters of protest by G. V. L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon. Octavo. Original white wrappers printed in black. Spine toned with some minor wear to ends, wrappers lightly marked, fore edge of front wrapper nicked with a couple of very minor chips. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing. A superb association copy, inscribed by Sylvia Beach on the title page, "For Allen Tanner, Sylvia Beach." Allen C. Tanner (1898–1987), an Illinois-born pianist, had met Sylvia Beach following his move to Paris in 1924 with Russian artist Pavel Tchelitche. There the couple became friends with Gertrude Stein and Edith Sitwell and joined the "Lost Generation" of expatriate American writers and artists who gathered at Beach's legendary bookshop, Shakespeare and Company in Paris. The French writer Andre Chamson wrote, "Sylvia carried pollen like a bee. She cross-fertilized these writers…She did more to link England, the United States, Ireland, and France than four great ambassadors combined. It was not merely for the pleasure of friendship that Joyce, Hemingway, Bryher, and so many others often took the path to Shakespeare and Company in the heart of Paris." This early critique of Joyce's final work was published by Shakespeare and Company some ten years prior to the publication of the finished novel; part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. The publishers later sold sheets of this edition to Faber & Faber in London and New Directions in New York, who issued them with inserted title pages.

No matter what new craziness pops up in America, I find it described beforehand by him He was never innocent, at home or abroad" (Garry Wills). "High and fine literature is wine," Twain once wrote, "and mine is only water; but everybody likes water." This beautiful edition of Twain's complete novels, essays and sketches attests to the enduring popularity and power of his works--many of which, despite their author's protestation to the contrary, have come to be regarded as among the finest vintage American literature offers. Among other classics, the set includes A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Life on the Mississippi, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Livres
