Munka. Müvészeti és társadalmi beszámolo. 10. 1929 november

Ifjuszocialisták Munkaközössége - Lajos Lengyel (Hungária Hirlapnyomda), Budapest 1929 - With two illustrations. First edition. In publisher's constructivist, typographically illustrated wrappers, printed in blue and black. 290-319, (230) p. The tenth issue of Kassák's important and his longest run avant-garde magazine Munka (Work), with illustrations by Alexandre Trauner and Dezsö Kornis. This issue is dealing with mostly economic, social, political and philosophical questions, however, it also contains the abstract of Thomas Mann's essay on Freud and an essay on the relation of socialism and fable by Lajos Gro. Illustrated by Alexandre Trauner and Dezsö Kornis drawings. Lajos Kassák was the chief figure and organizer of the Hungarian avant-garde movement, not merely as a versatile artist who created in various artistic fields but also as the editor and publisher of the most outstanding international avant-garde magazines in Hungary and for a short period in Vienna. Munka (Work) was his last and the longest run art magazine in the Pre-World Word II period, which followed the highly influential "MA" (today) and Dokumentum (Document). Its 65 issues were published between 1928 September and 1939 June (in different format, only the first 10 had such constructivist cover like this issue) with an emphasis on social and artistic issues and it served as basically the only permanent printed organ for progressive, modern, avant-garde literature and art in Hungary during the interwar period. A light brown stain to front cover at spine. Corners bumped. Inside clear, overall in fine condition. In publisher's constructivist, typographically illustrated wrappers, printed in blue and black [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        SAY IT WITH SONGS (1929)

Warner Bros. Vitaphone 1929 - Vintage original 14 x 22" (35 x 56 cm.) window card, USA. Al Jolson, Davey Lee, Marian Nixon, Holmes Herbert, dir: Lloyd Bacon; Warner Brothers Vitaphone. The Vitaphone logo is displayed for this early All Talking, All Singing vehicle for showman Al Jolson.Moving away from his minstrel show image, he played a happy-go-lucky radio singer who has a problem with gambling and drinking. This showing was for the Rialto Theatre of Fort Dodge, IA, which was built in the early-1920s and ran as a Central States Theatre until its closing in the mid-1970s. A few weeks after the Sep. 29 play date, Wall Street would crash, necessitating a need for more Jolson musicals. There is one mended tear, about 2.5" (4.5 cm.) and one vertical scratch, a little bit of soiling, VERY GOOD.

Scientific American November (Nov.) 1929 Volume 141 Number 5 - Featuring Timeless Great Depression Advertising Fail

New York: Scientific American Publishing Company. Paperback. Lucky Strike cigarette ad on back cover provides a truly classic and timeless example of a mis-timed advertisement. Consider that the great Wall St. stock market crash of 1929 occurred mere days before this issue hit the newsstands. Beneath the caption "An Ancient Prejudice has been removed" appears a clenched fist labeled as "American Intelligence" breaking a heavy chain. Top left a paranoid miser stacks his gold by candlelight. Top right a wealthy couple visits their palatial bank. Text beneath miser reads "Hoarding gold with the fanatical zeal of the miser has vanished. American Intelligence sponsors thousands of banking institutions to which the individual (i.e. the wealthy couple) safely entrusts his wealth." The message is clear. Readers should put their trust (and money) in the banks, and shun gold. This issue was likely printed just as the Great Crash occurred, causing countless financial institutions to go under - and destroying even more individual fortunes. (The ad goes on to claim that cigarettes have similarly overcome the prejudice against them.) A truly stunning work which deserves to be preserved and reflected upon in this age of limitless fiat currency printing. Average wear with three-inch crease to lower corner of back cover. Suitably framed and mounted, this ad will make a superlative office display for any precious metals executive. . Fair. 1929. First Edition.

Aziats : dzejoli / saucieni / dialogi (The Asian : Poems / Cries / Dialogues) [Poetry Collection]

Kreisa Fronte (The Left Front), Riga 1929 - Latvian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 60 gr. Wrappers, 59 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Wrapped cover edges, one minor crease across bottom corner of front cover, light foxing on the inner side of front cover and on the flyleaf. Striking cover and experimental typography content design created using avant-garde constructivist mannerisms of the time by either Ernests Kalis or Sigismunds Vidbergs, who both were noted modernist artists and book designers. Modernist collection of poetry "Asian" is imbued with the ideas of revolutionary struggle and hatred for capitalism. After the October Revolution author disappointed in bourgeois culture and capitalist society, hence his creation is characterized by social revitalization and wicked satire. Influenced by Mayakovsky, Laicens uses in poetic speech words which considered as unpoetic bringing poetic language to common speech simplicity expressing protest and struggle for the new content by changing the form, operates with revolutionary poster slogans, experiments with free verse. This author's work is some kind of leftist revolutionary manifesto - bright, aggressive, protestant, outstanding. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) is considered as central figure of the Latvian avant-garde, one of the most eminent personalities in Latvian modernist literature. Important organizer of the legal workers’ press and of revolutionary culture in bourgeois Latvia he edited cult leftist avant-garde journals Kreisa fronte (The Left Front) and Tribune (The Tribune). Laicens worked in the communist underground during Latvia's independence, but moved to the Soviet Union in 1933 to escape a prison sentence in Latvia. He was purged for his revolutionary efforts in 1938. Laicen’s social, politic and artistic views affect his creation development - fight about equality of society class and destroyed nation borders is unique qualities of wirter's creativity. His early poetry is represented by the lyrical hero expression, urban poetry, deny of the past and characterized by expressionism, also decadence, aestheticism and futurism features. Later poems main theme became revolutionary propaganda with expressionism and sometimes realism. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        1929 to 1937 Wisden Hardbacks - Set of 9

This lot is a Set of 9 Hardback Wisdens - 1929 to 1937. In OK Condition, including the hard to find 1934 (Bodyline Wisden). This set would be rated as 6/10 , it is not the best in terms of condition but the books are all steady , as we know 1933 to 1937 tend to be rougher than the other HBs after the change of materials by Wisden. The 1929 has worn boards, the 1932 has some marks to the spine, 1933/5/6 has facsimile spine gilt. 1929 has repaired hinges but all the rest are strong and original. 1934 is in top form, all photoplates present and correct. A steady set for someone looking to pick up most of the 1930s Hardbacks. More details on request.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1929 - 1929 Original Hardback Wisden

1929. 1929 was the last between the war Wisden I upgraded , it took me some time to find a nice one as the weight of the book does tend to control the condition, ditto with '28. Looks like a touch up on the spine gilt has occurred. There is a line to the front board and a couple of marks to the rear , slight hinge weakness which is very common for a 29 and some wear to the top of the yellow paste downs, looks like they are removed names. So this book has had some work on it. Clean inside. Benno s Notes : top right corner front cover creased. Slight tear to centre of spine inside back cover. Oval stain top of right hand margin p671 More information on request.

        Manuscript daybook.

Bandar Abbas, 1905-1929. - Folio ledger book (390 × 240 mm). (4), 276 pp., with numerous blank leaves at rear; pp. 164-165 typescript; letterpress memorandum pasted to pp. 273-275. Most agreements ratified with consular ink-stamps or pasted Consular Service postage stamps. Contemporary sheep dyed red, marbled pastedowns, inner hinges reinforced with cloth. Binding rubbed, inner hinge split between pp. 2-3. Very occasional ink-smudging, nevertheless in excellent condition. Manuscript legal record book of the just-founded British consulate at Bandar Abbas: intended for the consulate's internal use only, this handwritten ledger constitutes a historical document of Britain's growing commercial, political and military influence in the Gulf throughout a crucial quarter of a century. - The daybook covers the formative period of the consulate at the key port of Bandar Abbas, from early in the tenure of the influential but ill-fated Captain William Shakespear (1904-09) to the flourishing of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in the late 1920s. It shows how APOC and other British companies successfully cultivated networks of local agents (indeed, the final 50 pages are entirely taken up by contracts concerning oil and its by-products). Together, the records form a highly detailed primary source for the commercial and social life in Bandar Abbas, an increasingly cosmopolitan Gulf hub that has been called "the major entrepôt for the whole of southern Persia" (B. C. Busch, Britain and the Persian Gulf, 1894-1914 [1967], p. 44). They demonstrate the functioning of an important British outpost during an era marked by such convulsions as the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1905-11, the First World War, and the Persian coup d'etat of 1921, and for the rapid growth of APOC and the ongoing strategic contest between the British and Russian empires. - Mainly written in Persian or English (with a number in Arabic and a few in Sindhi) the records include fair copies of bills of sale, promissory notes, property leases, inheritance agreements, and other contracts. Parties include local merchants, of Persian as well as Arab and Indian origin, and various British companies which played an important role in the expansion of imperial influence in the region. The documents are neatly presented throughout; those in Persian are composed in an especially attractive flowing nasta'liq script. All are briefly described in English, then ratified, signed and stamped by the acting consul. The whole is very well preserved indeed, and forms a highly attractive historical record.         Scientific American November (Nov.) 1929 Volume 141 Number 5 - Featuring Timeless Great Depression Advertising Fail

Scientific American Publishing Company. Magazine
