        LIZA JANE AND THE KINKIES

      J. H. Sears and Company, Inc., New York 1929 - (Black Interest) LIZA JANE AND THE KINKIES written and illustrated by Mary Phipps. New York: J. H. Sears and Company, Inc., 1929. First edition. 4to - 8-1/16" x 10-15/16". Black cloth backed color pictorial boards with light soiling and wear to the corners and edges for what remains a nice copy of the book. The text of the book is hand-written and there are black, red and white illustrations on every page. The story follows a day in the life of Liza Jane Lee and tells of the adventures she has, the highlight of which is her meeting and befriending a group of black fairies called the Kinkies. There is a book plate on the front paste-down and the "belongs to" box is filled in with the book owner's name and the name of the people who gave it to her. The binding is the slightest bit shaky but all signatures and binding are intact. Additionally, one page is a bit proud and it has a few very short marginal tears and a tiny chip on the top edge because of it. This copy is quite special because it has A WONDERFUL ORIGINAL DRAWING OF LIZA JANE ALONG WITH AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION DATED NOVEMBER 2, 1929 BY THE BOOK'S AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR, MARY PHIPPS. Although not a perfect copy, this book is still firmly of collectible condition and the inclusion of the signed drawing/presentation makes it quite special indeed. The condition of this book is VERY GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Middle Parts of Fortune Somme and Ancre, 1916, 2 Volumes

The Piazza Press, London 1929 - Piazza Press, issued to subscribers by Peter Davies, 1929 but 1930 to spine as issued. With the partially intact scarce glassine wrapper with brown paper flaps and in the maroon cloth slipcase in good condition. An exceptional copy of these two delightful volumes, limited to 520 numbered copies, original brown buckram with teg and marbled endpapers, pp. (iv), 226; 227-453. A very good and complete set of a famous work in original slipcase. Manning, son of Sir William Manning, one-time Mayor of Sydney, was an Australian poet and essayist. He served throughout the war as a private in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. This famous work is the story of his battalion "from the time it is chewed to pieces on the Somme until, brought up to strength again, it is thrust into another vain attack". T. E. Lawrence said "No praise could be too sheer for this book.". There is little doubt that this is one of the finest pieces of writing on the First World War. The title is taken from the Shakesperian quote, "On fortunes cap we are not the very button. Then you live about her waist, or in the middle of her favours?.Faith, her privates we". The edited trade edition was published as Her Privates We. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Middle Parts of Fortune Somme & Ancre, 1916

London: The Piazza Press issued to subscribers by Peter Davies, Ltd,, 1929. 2 volumes, octavo. Original brown buckram, titles gilt to spines, top edges gilt, others uncut, red silk page-markers, marbled endpapers. With the original red cloth slipcase. Spines slightly rolled, tips very faintly rubbed, otherwise a fine set, with the slipcase only a trifle rubbed here and there. First edition, first impression, number 433 of 525 copies in the original unexpurgated edition. Manning's Middle Parts of Fortune was perceived on publication as one of the most powerfully personal visions of the Great War. In Men at War Hemingway described it as "The finest and noblest book of men in war that I have ever read. I read it once each year to remember how things really were so that I will never lie to myself nor to anyone else about them," and T. E. Lawrence remarked that "No praise could be too sheer for this book … it justifies every heat of praise." The book was published in this limited edition in 1929, garnering informed praise and intemperate notoriety in close to equal measure, and an expurgated edition, under the title Her Privates We (taken from the line in Shakespeare's Hamlet immediately following "The Middle Parts of Fortune"), was published the following year. But Manning never achieved fame and it was probably not until the re-issue of the full text in 1977 that the novel received the recognition that it deserved. Manning died of pneumonia at a nursing home in Hampstead in 1935. The book is extremely unusual to find in the rather ill-made original slipcase.

Der Kamf. Monatshrift farn Poyle-Tsienistishn Gedank.

Paris Imp. d'Art Voltaire 1929 - 48 pp. 23,8 x 15,5 cm. Original illustrated wrappers with typographical original woodcut (somewhat dusty, faded, stapling rusted, small owner's stamp to front wrapper). Browning due to paper, some staining and creasing. Text in Yiddish. Extremely rare Polish-Zionist magazine, published in Paris. The publication, which was obviously part of the circle of the General Jewish Labour Bund – a secular Jewish Socialist party, founded in Vilnius in 1897; contains contributions by various authors. Articles deal with emigration to Palestine and reflect a collective ideology of settlement based on socialism. The typographic cover illustration, which is a key motif, recalls the avant-garde work of István Irsai (1896-1968) Hungarian-born Israeli architect and graphic designer, who designed the Hebrew font "Haim" (named after Haim Nachman Bialik), as well as Zionist posters, the Broom (avant-garde art magazine), and HaKumkum (The Kettle); he also designed stage sets as well as logos and theatre programs. An extensive collection of programmes giving a full insight into the history of the founding and transformation of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Originally conceived by Sergei Diaghilev, the dancing company Ballet Russes was left with substantial debts after the death of the impresario in 1929. Its property was claimed by its creditors, and the company of dancers dispersed. Colonel Wassily de Basil and his associate René Blum revived the dancing company by founding the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1931. The new company, which was joined by the choreographers and Diaghilev's alumni Léonide Massine and George Balanchine, gave its first performance at the Monte Carlo Opera already in 1932. By 1935 gradually deteriorating business relationship between de Basil and Blum led to a split and the formation of two separate companies – Blum's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and de Basil's Original Ballet Russe. The Blum's new company presented its first season in 1938 - starting in Monte Carlo, then moving to London, and finally in October of that year performing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The Original Ballet Russe also presented itself for the first time in May 1938 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, a few hundred yards away from the Theatre R [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        A Book of Prayers.

St. Briac 1929 - Square 8vo (13.8 x 11.5 cm). Illuminated manuscript on vellum, parallel text in Church Slavonic and English, 58 leaves, with decorative headpieces and vignettes gilt, 4 etched metal plates (German silver) signed by Nozal, each with green silk guards. Binding by Asprey of London, square ebony boards with engraved metal centre- and cornerpieces, decorative enamel panel in pink-shaded blue and white and 4 moonstones set into upper cover, two clasps, gilt edges, in velvet-lined black folding box; small cracks on covers. Unusual illuminated manuscript on vellum, written and decorated by the Grand Duchess of Russia - beautifully bound and featuring four silver plates in a great art-deco style. The manuscript text, written both in Russian and English, is richly adorned with vignettes in turquoise, red and gold. However its most striking and unusual feature are the four metal plates bound in, engraved on both sides. They were created by Julie Nozal, a French wood engraver described once as "the only woman who makes incunabula" (Lucette). Nozal's work focused on medieval techniques and inspiration, and is very recognisable, informed both by her Catholicism and by her artistic and aristocratic lineage. She grew up in an environment of high wealth, privilege and patronage of the arts; her father was an enamelist and her father-in-law a painter. In her artistic career Nozal derived inspiration from early European art, following artists who shared her devotion to the Church and handcrafted books. Specially produced in collaboration with Grand Duchess Victoria of Russia, heir apparent to the throne. The last metal plate is inscribed "Fait par / S.A.I. Victoria / Grande Duchesse / de Russie / Jacques Nozal / Julie Nozal / achevé en 1929 St Briac". Nozals' family home "Les Emaux" is still located in the small town of Saint Briac outside of St. Malo, in Brittany, France. The town became famous for its royal inhabitants including Marie of Romania. After the Russian Revolution, Grand Duchess Victoria Fedorovna of Russia settled there too, along with her husband Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich. Also written in English and bound in London: a manuscript for a Russian Princess of British descent. Victoria Melita (1876–1936) was the daughter of the second son of Queen Victoria, Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Coburg, and his consort, Maria, daughter of Alexander II of Russia. Victoria married first her first cousin, the Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, the older brother of Empress Alexandra of Russia. They were later divorced, and she married second (in a Romanov House scandal) the Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich, Nicholas II's first cousin. Kirill assumed the position of head of the House of Romanov and pretender to the throne, in St. Briac, on 26 July 1924, and proclaimed himself Emperor of all Russias on 31 August 1924.         The Rime of the Ancient Mariner [David Jones, artist] (No. 31 of 60 with extra suite of engravings)

Bristol: Douglas Cleverdon, 1929. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Jones, David. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. 46 p. Signed by Artist. No. 31 of 60 copies with extra suite of engravings in final state and SIGNED by David Jones on the limitation page (total edition was 470 copies). David Jones (1895-1974) was both a writer and an artist; as a writer, he was one of the first-generation British modernist poets and was highly regarded by both T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden. As an artist, he learned wood and copper engraving from Eric Gill, providing illustrations for the Golden Cockerel Press, for which he engraved the Cockerel itself in 1925. This set of copperplate etchings is considered one of his finest, with his style perfectly complementing the poetry. Jones is "often likened to William Blake because of his achievement in two arts and the religious vision that pervades all his works" (Horne, pg. 264). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in natural linen cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, fore-edge uncut, limitation statement at the front showing this to be no. 31 of sixty copies signed by the artist, with an extra set of the engravings in their final state, signed by David Jones on this page, the ten engravings throughout the text with the two small engravings serving as a headpiece and tailpiece, the extra sutie of engravings enclosed in a pocket on the rear pastedown; type Arrighi, printed at the Fanfare Press, London, folio size (just over 12.25" tall), pagination: (i-viii), 1-37, printer's statement (38). ***CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, gently bumped corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; we had a professional do some minor repair to the head and tail of the spine, the spine has darkened and shows some minor soiling, boards somewhat dusty. The extra suite of engravings is fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Das Blumenbuch (Volumes I - III)

[Mainz, Germany]: [Mainzer Presse, 1929-1930], 1929. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. [Koch, Rudolf; Kredel, Fritz; Wollner, Emil]. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. The idea for this work came from a trip Rudolph Koch took in Germany with his young children to gather wildflowers; he drew them, and then enlisted the help of his friend Fritz Kredel to make woodcuts from his drawings (from A Century for the Century by Hutner and Kelly)."Fritz Kredel learned his trade as assistant to Rudolph Koch, in Offenbach during the 1920's; by the time he left Germany he was a celebrated illustrator. The woodcut and pen and ink were his preferred mediums, and one of his masterpieces -- in collaboration with Koch -- was 'Das Blumenbuch' (''The Flower Book'') of 1929-30, for which Kredel cut more than 250 color flower illustrations in wood. Woodcuts, he felt, had a crispness and sharpness that could not be achieved in any other medium" (from a NY Times review of Centennial Exhibit of Kredel's work). The woodcuts were then hand-colored by Emil Wollner.***DESCRIPTION: All text in German; each volume contains hand-colored plates printed on the rectos only, with each page displaying one flower, some arranged by season ("From Winter to Early Spring" and so on) or locale ("In the Meadow", etc); Table of Contents at the rear, a total of 250 plates between the three volumes. Limited edition of 1000 copies, unnumbered (which followed a special edition of only 20 copies); 12" tall.***CONDITION: All three volumes in near fine condition with light wear to the head of the spines, some rubbing to one corner, and a very light, stray mark on the front of Volumes I and III. Volume II has duplicate plate numbers 167-170 bound in, no plates missing. Lacking slipcases.***CITATION: A Century for the Century no. 20.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         The Comedy of Dante Alighieri of Florence: Commonly Called The Divine Comedy, (Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso) [with] The Florence of Dante Alighieri, The Dante of All the World [and with] Announcement of the Publication of The Comedy of Dante Alighieri (4 Volumes with prospectus, in custom wooden case, with protective bags)

San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1929. Limited Edition. Vellum. Fine. No. 205 of 250 sets, Folio - over 12" to 15" tall, approximately 630 pp. for the four volumes. This work, spectacular in execution by one of the early 20th century's most distinguished printers, hardly needs an introduction. Melville Best Anderson (1851-1933) against all advice, decided to do a new translation of Dante in "terza rime" which is almost impossible to do in English, spending 28 years on his translation. John Henry Nash (1871-1947) spent six years bringing putting the translation into a published form he felt worthy, and succeeded to a degree that the sets are still highly sought after today. He began by scouring paper mills in England, Germany, Italy and Holland; it was there he found the Van Gelder Zonen mill in Amsterdam, from whom he ordered the special paper, with his watermark. The vellum for the binding presented another challenge, as it is a difficult material to handle successfully; after once again searching through Europe he commissioned the firm of Huble and Denck of Leipzig to make the bindings. The result is almost ethereal in its stark beauty and simplicity; the rather plain, majestic bindings with no ornamentation, the hand-set type in Cloister Lightface (which lightness of feel combined with its basis in Venetian printing of the 15th century was a perfect choice for this work), and the ruled pages setting off the text from the extensive marginal notes (the mitred rule, tricky to set, was a trademark of Mr. Nash), all work in perfect harmony. This set in unparalleled condition, fine both in its binding and the interior, as clean and crisp as though it had just been released. ***DESCRIPTION: The four volumes all bound in full vellum, single narrow gilt ruled border on both boards, spine compartments outlined in gilt with gilt lettering, yapped edges, top edges gilt, green sewn headbands, all text pages with vertical and horizontal mitred rules setting off the text from the marginal notes, limitation statement on verso of title pages, prior owner bookplates on the front pastedowns (see Provenance below); folio size (approximately 13.75" tall), pagination: Vol. I (Florence), (i-ix), blank, half-title, 10-120; Vol. II (Inferno), (i)-viii, half-title (1), 2-165; Vol. III (Purgatorio), (i-iv), half-title (1), 2-166; Vol. IV (Paradiso), (i-iv), half-title (1), 2-165; limited edition of 250 sets with 230 for sale. The prospectus covered in marbled cloth, paper spine label, prior owner order card on the front pastedown, this no. 234, includes a two-page announcement, followed by eight specimen pages; folio size, unpaginated, thirteen pages total. Each of the volumes protected by a custom chemise which is covered in rust buckram and lined with ivory cardstock, enclosing the volumes on all three sides as well as the bottom edge; the chemises fit into separate compartments in a custom wood case (maple?) measuring approximately 18.75" tall, 7.5" wide, and 10" deep; there is a drawer on the bottom of the case which contains four flannel folding bags, likely the original bags which contained the books when they were distributed by Mr. Nash. ***CONDITION: The volumes are all fine, as noted above; the vellum bindings perfect, with no marks or rubbing, text blocks and hinges all strong and sturdy, the pages clean and bright, the only prior owner markings being the bookplates on the front pastedowns. The prospectus is also fine other than some faint sunning to the spine. The chemises and wooden case are fine, the flannel bags near fine, showing faint soiling and minimal wear. ***PROVENANCE: The four-volume set from the collection of noted collector Marcus Crahan, with his bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume; the prospectus from Harry M. Creech. ***CITATIONS: O'Day pp. 65-67, A Century for the Century no. 18. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that due to the extreme weight of this set additional postage will apply. ***Please contact us with any other questions, we are here to help.

Hi and Welcome to our Store. We are selling our HBs off in chunks, happy to split the sets or to send more details and pictures, please just ask us or the admin team here.         MAILEY, Arthur THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS TOOK THEIR CLUBS AND HAD A QUIET HIT AROUND KOOYONGA GOLF LINKS LAST SUNDAY

An original sequence of seven cartoons, in ink on paper, depicting havoc being wrought by the England team at Kooyonga Golf Club during the rest day of the Adelaide test of 1928/9. Signed by Mailey in the lower right hand corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. 365x295mm. Arthur Mailey (1886-1967) was a successful leg break bowler, taking 99 wickets from Australia in 21 tests between 1921 and 1929, however his lasting talent was as a cartoonist and he had a particular knack of caricaturing his team mates and opponents, his ready wit creating a humorous narrative with a sequence of cartoons. He drew for the Sydney Arrow and Bulletin and the London Bystander as well as writing and illustrating a number of books, most notably his account of the Bodyline series, And Then Came Larwood and his autobiography, 10 for 66 And All That. Although individual sketches appear occasionally, complete cartoon sequences are rarely seen in commerce.
