13 (Parnasas parodijose) : Nuo Maironies iki manes [13 (Parnassus Parodies) : From Maironis to Me]

Naujas žodis, Kaune (“New Word” Publishing Company, Kaunas) 1929 - Lithuanian language. Octavo 12 x 18 cm. Weight 45 gr. Wrappers, 42 [6] pp. The book in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses and remarks. Little frayed cover edges, creaser across the bottom right corner of front cover, light brown round damp stain on the back cover; internally perfect condition. Amazing avant-garde photomontage cover design in black, red and white by R. Vosylius. Present book is author’s second collection of satirical poems after “3 Granadieriai” (Three Grenadiers), which parodies the symbolists and romantics. In “13” he deepens and refines the same direction and revals himself as a striking master of parody and satire, where masterfully modeled not only choosen characters, but also rhythms, sounds, writing style by using hyberloles in the type of comic grimaces. “13” is the greatest author’s quest to expose ritualized cultural authority. The book’s name is given because of 13 poets, whom each verse is parodying. This list represents a Parnassus of modern Lithuanian literature, most prominent representatives of different movements: romantists - Maironis and Faustas Kirsa; symbolists Liudas Gira, Balys Sruoga, Petras Vaiciunas, Vincas Mykolaitis and Jouzas Zlabys-Zenge; members of avant-garde group Keturi vejai (Four Winds) and author’s like-minded colleagues: Kazys Binkis, Salys Semerys, Juozas Tysliava, Antanas Rimydis and Teofilis Tilvytis himself. Teofilis Tilvytis (1904-1969) famous Lithuanian and Soviet poet, translator. He first published his works in 1923. Early writings were mostly satirical genre. From 1924 to 1928 was a very important figure of cult avant-garde literary movement Keturi vejai (Four Winds). In the Soviet period Tilvytis mainly wrote lyric and epic poems providing socialist realism. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and varioud medals. Scientific American November (Nov.) 1929 Volume 141 Number 5 - Featuring Timeless Great Depression Advertising Fail

New York: Scientific American Publishing Company. Paperback. Lucky Strike cigarette ad on back cover provides a truly classic and timeless example of a mis-timed advertisement. Consider that the great Wall St. stock market crash of 1929 occurred mere days before this issue hit the newsstands. Beneath the caption "An Ancient Prejudice has been removed" appears a clenched fist labeled as "American Intelligence" breaking a heavy chain. Top left a paranoid miser stacks his gold by candlelight. Top right a wealthy couple visits their palatial bank. Text beneath miser reads "Hoarding gold with the fanatical zeal of the miser has vanished. American Intelligence sponsors thousands of banking institutions to which the individual (i.e. the wealthy couple) safely entrusts his wealth." The message is clear. Readers should put their trust (and money) in the banks, and shun gold. This issue was likely printed just as the Great Crash occurred, causing countless financial institutions to go under - and destroying even more individual fortunes. (The ad goes on to claim that cigarettes have similarly overcome the prejudice against them.) A truly stunning work which deserves to be preserved and reflected upon in this age of limitless fiat currency printing. Average wear with three-inch crease to lower corner of back cover. Suitably framed and mounted, this ad will make a superlative office display for any precious metals executive. . Fair. 1929. First Edition.

Aziats : dzejoli / saucieni / dialogi (The Asian : Poems / Cries / Dialogues) [Poetry Collection]

Kreisa Fronte (The Left Front), Riga 1929 - Latvian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 60 gr. Wrappers, 59 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Wrapped cover edges, one minor crease across bottom corner of front cover, light foxing on the inner side of front cover and on the flyleaf. Striking cover and experimental typography content design created using avant-garde constructivist mannerisms of the time by either Ernests Kalis or Sigismunds Vidbergs, who both were noted modernist artists and book designers. Modernist collection of poetry "Asian" is imbued with the ideas of revolutionary struggle and hatred for capitalism. After the October Revolution author disappointed in bourgeois culture and capitalist society, hence his creation is characterized by social revitalization and wicked satire. Influenced by Mayakovsky, Laicens uses in poetic speech words which considered as unpoetic bringing poetic language to common speech simplicity expressing protest and struggle for the new content by changing the form, operates with revolutionary poster slogans, experiments with free verse. This author's work is some kind of leftist revolutionary manifesto - bright, aggressive, protestant, outstanding. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) is considered as central figure of the Latvian avant-garde, one of the most eminent personalities in Latvian modernist literature. Important organizer of the legal workers’ press and of revolutionary culture in bourgeois Latvia he edited cult leftist avant-garde journals Kreisa fronte (The Left Front) and Tribune (The Tribune). Laicens worked in the communist underground during Latvia's independence, but moved to the Soviet Union in 1933 to escape a prison sentence in Latvia. He was purged for his revolutionary efforts in 1938. Laicen’s social, politic and artistic views affect his creation development - fight about equality of society class and destroyed nation borders is unique qualities of wirter's creativity. His early poetry is represented by the lyrical hero expression, urban poetry, deny of the past and characterized by expressionism, also decadence, aestheticism and futurism features. Later poems main theme became revolutionary propaganda with expressionism and sometimes realism. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

This lot is a Set of 9 Hardback Wisdens - 1929 to 1937. In OK Condition, including the hard to find 1934 (Bodyline Wisden). This set would be rated as 6/10 , it is not the best in terms of condition but the books are all steady , as we know 1933 to 1937 tend to be rougher than the other HBs after the change of materials by Wisden. The 1929 has worn boards, the 1932 has some marks to the spine, 1933/5/6 has facsimile spine gilt. 1929 has repaired hinges but all the rest are strong and original. 1934 is in top form, all photoplates present and correct. A steady set for someone looking to pick up most of the 1930s Hardbacks. More details on request.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1929 - 1929 Original Hardback Wisden

1929. 1929 was the last between the war Wisden I upgraded , it took me some time to find a nice one as the weight of the book does tend to control the condition, ditto with '28. Looks like a touch up on the spine gilt has occurred. There is a line to the front board and a couple of marks to the rear , slight hinge weakness which is very common for a 29 and some wear to the top of the yellow paste downs, looks like they are removed names. So this book has had some work on it. Clean inside. Benno s Notes : top right corner front cover creased. Slight tear to centre of spine inside back cover. Oval stain top of right hand margin p671 More information on request.
