Original morocco-backed patterned paper boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, raised bands, gilt titling, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In a very fine matching morocco folding box, the back modelled to resemble the four spines. One full-page engraving, 35 half-page engravings and MORE THAN 500 OFTEN WHIMSICAL AND ALWAYS APPEALING WOOD-ENGRAVED BORDERS (mostly historiated, some repeats), the illustrations all BY ERIC GILL; red and blue initials. Chanticleer 63; Gill 281; Cave & Manson 63 and pp. 53-55. The spines with the inevitable variation in color (but with much less of a contrast than is normally seen), the usual rubbing to lower corners (with very slight losses), otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, IMMACULATE INTERNALLY. Founded in 1920 with the intention to print fine editions of important well-known books as well as new literary works of merit from young authors, the Golden Cockerel Press was purchased in 1924 by the illustrator and wood-engraver Robert Gibbings. "Under his direction," says Cave, the press was "transformed into the principal vehicle for the renaissance of wood-engraved book illustration that took place in the years between the wars." In addition to doing wood engravings himself, Gibbings employed a stable of eminent artists including, among others, Eric Gill, John Nash, John Farleigh, David Jones, Eric Ravilious, and Blair Hughes-Stanton. The present item is an unusually well-preserved copy of one of the three great Golden Cockerel Press books (the others are the "Four Gospels" and "Troilus and Criseyde"). It was produced at a time when the name "Golden Cockerel" was of considerable interest, not just in the private press world, but in the general popular culture as well. As Cave & Manson says, "The production of the Chaucer was regarded as a literary event, and was well reported in the press." When the book was completed, "there were notices in papers as different as the 'Liverpool Post,' the 'Glasgow Daily Recorder,' and the 'Chicago Evening Post' [as well as] reviews in magazines ranging from the 'Bookman' or the 'Spectator' to the 'Studio' and the 'Connoisseur.'" Although reviews were not entirely favorable (some critics were put off by what were deemed to be "inappropriate" illustrations), the book was very profitable, grossing some £14,000 for the Press. Apart from the buzz it generated as a cultural event, Gill's "Tales," for which the artist is said to have engraved some 160 blocks, is one of the best examples in modern fine press work of the successful collaboration of text, decoration, and typography. It is also an item more and more difficult to find in fine condition, as the bindings are very frequently spotted and with poorly matched color.

In a custom-made blue cloth chemise and matching folding box with silver titling on spine. Each page with woodcut border decoration by Eric Gill. Chanticleer 63. A few vague, trivial creases to the vellum, but fine, fresh specimens. This group includes three leaves with borders on both recto and verso. The decorations (front and back) and the text passages are: Physick 546 and 529 (child peeping / man waving eight-leaf spray), Sampson and Hercules; Physick 511 and 532 (woman and ape / spray of 12 triple-lobed leaves), hymn to Venus; and Physick 531 and 544 (youth blowing kiss / child crawling at foot of spray), description of the temple of Venus.

Stanislaw Szukalski (1893–1987) was a Polish-born painter and sculptor. He also developed the pseudoscientific-historical theory of Zermatism, positing that all human culture was derived from post- deluge Easter Island and that mankind was locked in an eternal struggle with the Sons of Yeti ("Yetinsyny"), the offspring of Yeti and humans. He illustrated this theory in his works.

Includes 97 of the 104 loose plates in the folder in back. The loose plates are all in about near fine condition. An about very good copy with page 89 very neatly excised otherwise an internally clean copy with vellum spine somewhat soiled and black cloth boards with some wear to the edge of the front board and corners. Without dust jacket as issued but also missing the slipcase. Despite the litany of flaws this is still a presentable copy of a very beautiful book.

July 9, 1929." The words "No," "doubtful," and "great" are bracketed so the recipients can "choose" their adjective. An association copy of spectacular desirability. Raoul Whitfield was a fellow BLACK MASK pulp mystery author (300 published short stories and two novels) whom Hammett routinely met at bars in New York and San Francisco to discuss stories and career moves; his wife Prudence (who used to sit at these bars drinking while the men talked) became Hammett's lover (see Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett 1921-1960 ed. Richard Layman, Counterpoint Press, 2001). Pru Whitfield had a tempestuous relationship with Hammett for an unknown number of years which later evolved into a lifelong friendship -- while Hammett was in the army, he wrote over 75 letters to her which confirms their closeness (these letters sold at Sotheby's in 1980).. Original publisher's russet Niger morocco by A. W. Bain, simple gilt double ruled border on covers, raised bands, gilt titling on spine, top edge gilded on the rough, other edges untrimmed. Dreyfus 58; "A Century for the Century " 33. Two boards with short, faint scratch, a little variation in the colors of the spines, as usual (volume II lighter, the others pretty well matched), a hint of offsetting to endleaves and blanks from binder's glue, but AN UNUSUALLY FINE COPY, with only the most trivial imperfections, the bindings entirely unworn and lustrous. This is a particularly appealing set of one of the best editions of Shakespeare ever printed, perhaps the very best modern edition. Taken from the text of the First Folio, but "with Quarto variants and a selection of modern readings," the Nonesuch Shakespeare is also the most outstanding production of the press. Ransom calls it "editorially and typographically . . . the high spot of the Nonesuch program." Besides the authentic plays and poetry of Shakespeare, the set includes (in the final volume) three plays on which Shakespeare is believed to have collaborated: "The Two Noble Kinsmen," "King Edward the Third," and "Sir Thomas More." Their inclusion was motivated by the publishers' desire to be thorough, to do something a bit different, and to make the seventh volume of the same bulk as the previous ones. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1923 by typographer and book designer Francis Meynell (1891-1975) with the help of his friend David Garnett and his future wife, Vera Mendel. Meynell designed his books on a small Albion hand press, but had them printed commercially in order to keep the price of well-designed books made of quality materials within the means of readers and collectors who could not afford most private press editions. The leather used for this edition is often naturally spotted or becomes that way over time, and the spines darken differently in response to light, making it very difficult now to find attractive copies. Happily, our unworn set is without the unpleasant blemishes and has close to uniform color.

A splendid set, a benchmark for modern editions of Shakespeare and the 'chef d'oeuvre' for the famous Nonesuch Press.Edited by Herbert Farjeon, this set offers a fine combination of scholarly collation of the quarto variants against the first folio, with a beautiful physical design of both typography and binding. The overall design was by Francis Meynell; the text was printed at the Cambridge University Press, in Monotype Fournier with freshly-cut initials specifically made for this edition, and the bindings were prepared by A.W. Bain in London. The set was limited to 1600 copies."You have created a most marvellous pleasure", T.E. Lawrence wrote to his friend David Garnett. "I have handled it ever so many times, and read The Tempest right through. It satisfies. It is final, like the Kelmscott Chaucer or the Ashendene Virgil."This would appear to be an early set: rather than being numbered, it is embossed with the Nonesuch stamp 'This Book is Out of Series - For Review'.

After Potter finished her Peter Rabbit series Potter intended to stop writing and it was only with the persuasion of her American publisher, Alexander McKay, that she agreed to write this book intended only for the American market. Illus. by Potter with 6 color plates and 20 full page and 42 smaller black and white drawings.       Hollywood: Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1929. An original Ruth Harriet Louise 8" x 10" photograph portrait of a very young Joan Crawford. The photo was taken in 1929 and features Crawford wearing a Howard Greer get-up. The pasted caption on the verso reads in part "Joan Crawford, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer player, poses in sports costume of white camels hair jersey jumper over pleated silk skirt. Embossed stamp of Ruth Harriet Louise on bottom of the white border, and her faint rubber stamp is also on the verso along with a property of Photoplay Magazine rubber stamp. This is a superb example of the Hollywood studio publicity machine in full force during the early years of its golden age and a wonderful rare photograph by one of the legendary photographers working in the Hollywood studio system, not to mention a wonderful portrait of a great movoe star during her very early years when she was relatively unknown. Very faint not noticeable small crease to the top of the still which is printed on heavy stock paper. . Original Photograph. Paper.       1929. 1. FREUD,TOM SEIDMANN. DAS ZAUBERBOOT. Berlin: Herbert Stuffer 1929. 4to (8 1/8 x 9 1/2"), cloth backed pictorial boards, covers slightly dusty else fine and complete. First edition of this rare MOVEABLE BOOK done by the niece of Sigmund Freud. Her moveable books were immediately hailed for their innovations, but because of her Jewish heritage, most copies of her books were destroyed and very few remain intact today. In this book, there are a variety of moveable pages including a revolving wheel and a Punch and Judy theatre. There is also a grid with cut-outs that enables the reader to develop 4 different stories from one page, and a clever tale that lets the reader make part of the illustrations disappear using special red paper. Hurlimann (p. 216-17) mentions these innovative books, remarkable not only for their moveable parts but for their integration of suitable text with artistic achievement.

A little rubbed and faded at extremities, spine very slightly faded, bump to edges of upper board. An excellent copy in the rubbed and chipped jacket with an abrasion to the upper panel and several closed tears, one of which is visibly repaired with tape on the lower panel, other tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Sieveking on the front free endpaper, "For Elizabeth Hudson, my friend: Lance Sieveking, [?] Library, June 11th 1936". Additionally inscribed by the author on the upper panel of the dust jacket, "60 Carlyle Square, Chelsea, London". The recipient. Elizabeth Hudson (1885–1973), was a nurse in Paris during the First World War and became a correspondent with many soldiers, some of whom she kept in contact with for many years. She became a good friend of E. OE. Somerville, and compiled a bibliography of her works that was published in 1942. Sieveking served in France during the First World War, and it may have been there, or through post-war artistic circles, that he met Hudson .

Bain of London with gilt titles to spines and double gilt rule border to boards and gilt rule to turn ins, slight wear to leather on foredge and turn-in of upper board of v.2 else a near fine set, internally clean and bright, No.1025 of an edition of 1600 sets. , The Nonesuch Shakespeare is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Press. The first volume was published in 1929 when the press had already been in business for seven years and when its finances and that of its owner were at best perilous. The edition was financed by Random House and it's for that reason that their imprint appears under the Nonesuch imprint on the title page. From first publication it was a success with the book's American distributor complaining that he could have sold twice as many copies if only he'd had them. But the book was financially successful because of how its produced. Herbert Farjeon's editing remains highly regarded, the typography was conceived with great care by Francis Meynell and the book was printed at Cambridge under the guidance of the Printer to the University, Walter Lewis. With the addition of a fine binding you have a book in which each part of it's production is of the highest quality. , 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

      Sawrey, Nr. Ambleside: No Publisher, 1929. Autograph letter signed from Beatrix Potter (H.B. Heelis) to Mrs Wight. Single sided letter on lined paper, approximately 180mm x 230mm in size. Closed tear to lower left hand side, otherwise very good and in a legible hand. Dated April 15th, 1929, the letter thanks Mrs Wight for the Graythwaite subscriptions, noting that 'very few have dropped out' and that a play at Sawrey School brought in over thirteen pounds. Accompanying the letter is a photocopy of an account by Mrs Wight of her relationship with Beatrix Potter. Now both housed in a velvet lined cloth drop back box, made by Temple Bookbinders, with title in gilt to spine and upper cover. Signed by Author. First Edition. Unbound. Good+. 8vo. Letter.

Newell, J.Allen St. John, A.B. Frost, and others.Original dark blue fine-bead cloth, gilt triple-rule border with the gilt stencil signature of Mark Twain on the front cover. Spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine set in the original pale blue dust jackets with printed paper labels on the spine.The Stormfield edition of the Writings of Mark Twain, published in 1929, is identical in every way (with the exception of Twain's signature) to the Definitive Edition which had been published by Gabriel Wells in 1922. Even the limitation of these two sets were the same, both being limited to 1,024 numbered copies. The only difference between the two editions was the addition of an inserted 'signed leaf' in the first volume of the Definitive edition. Twain had signed these leaves in 1906 in anticipation of the edition but died but died twelve years before it's publication in 1922. In fact the full cloth binding on the Stormfield edition is certainly superior to the quarter blue cloth over paper boards of the Definitive edition.The 'Stormfield' edition was named after Mark Twain's final home "The Clemens family was itinerant from 1891 until well after Olivia's death in 1904, trying out a number of houses, none of which they found ultimately congenial. Fully out of debt, Clemens decided toward the end of his life to try and recover the feeling of stability that the Hartford home represented by building another house, this time in Redding, Connecticut, where he had purchased nearly 250 acres of land in 1906. In 1907, he commissioned John Mead Howells, son of William Dean Howells, to design the house, and allowed, or perhaps even encouraged, daughter Clara to participate in planning and overseeing construction. Built on the money he earned on "Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven," he named the house "Stormfield" and lived there until his death in 1910. Clara sold the house many years after her father's death. When the house burned down, it's owners built a near replica, which remains in private hands." (Gregg Camfield. The other three sections were published by Imperial, New York, and feature cream cards. Each section is complete, with 35, 27, 38, and 36 cards, respective to sections I through IV. A rare complete set, with cards in VG+ condition in VG boxes with occasional wear to hinges and chipping to the paper spine labels. A beautiful set of medical images suitable for both reference and display.
