The Love of the Foolish Angel

London - W. Collins Sons and Co., 1929. London - W. Collins Sons and Co., 1929 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Grey patterned cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. First edition which is illustrated with a lovely frontispiece and decorations by the well known French illustrator Edmund Dulac. Helen Beauclerk was a novelist and translator. She was the daughter of Major Sydney Edwin Bellingham and Helen Mary Dunlop, but was adopted by Captain Ferdinand Beauclerk. Her name was legally changed to Helen Beauclerk by Deed Poll. Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), was a book illustrator prominent during the so called Golden Age of Illustration. He was picked up in London at the age of 22 by J. M. Dent, and given a commission to illustrate the collected works of the Bront sisters. He then began an association with the Leceister Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery would commission paintings from Dulac and then sell the rights to Hodder & Stoughton, who would publish the books (one book a year over many years) while the gallery would sell the paintings. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include The Arabian Nights (1907), an edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908), of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909), The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910), Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911), The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912) and Princess Badoura (1913). During World War I he contribued to relief books, including King Albert's Book, Princess Mary's Gift Book, and, unusually, his own Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross (1915). After the war, the deluxe edition illustrated book became a rarity and Dulac's career in this field was over. His last two such books are Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book (1916) and the Tanglewood Tales (1918). His career continued in other areas however, including newspaper caricatures, portraiture, theatre costume and set design, bookplates, chocolate boxes, and medals. Condition: The binding is tight and firm and both covers are attached. The front and rear inner hinges are strained but holding. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping to the top and tail of the spine and to the corners of the boards. The boards also have some small marks and the spineis sunned. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spots and some offsetting to the front and rear paste downs and first blank end papers..

        Dear Judas, and Other Poems

New York: Horace Liveright 1929 - First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Jeffers to the front free endpaper: "Inscribed for Mr Jimmie Hoppe, / by his friend Robinson Jeffers. / Tor House, Carmel - August, 1930." Publisher's black cloth over purple boards, lettered in gilt; in the original green dust jacket, with an illustration of Judas to the front panel in blue, lettered in dark blue and black. Near fine, with a hint of wear to the extremities, light toning to the fore edge, else fine, bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and chipping to the extremities, toning to the spine, short losses to the spine head and top edge of the front panel, some rubbing to the hinges, less toning than usual to the panels, else fine. This copy is inscribed by Robinson Jeffers to his friend and fellow author James M. Hopper. Jeffers inscribed this volume at Tor House, the home he built for his family in Carmel-by-the-Sea in California and the location at which he wrote the majority of his novels. Both Jeffers and Hopper, along with their contemporaries George Sterling, Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, and Jack London, were part of the group of authors that helped establish Carmel as a literary and artistic refuge in Monterey County. Although neither was a native of California, both Jeffers and Hopper ultimately settled in Carmel. Dear Judas is a collection of eight poems, including two longer poems, "The Loving Shepherdess" and "Dear Judas," as well as six shorter verses, "The Broken Balance," "Birth-Dues," "The Humanist's Tragedy," "Evening Ebb," "Hands," and "Hooded Night." In the titular poem, Jeffers retells the story of Jesus's passion story as a Noh play. In "The Loving Shepherdess," Jeffers tells the story of a female Christ figure as she travels up the California coast towards her ultimate fate of death during childbirth.         Antlitz Der Zeit: Sechzig Aufnahmen Deutscher Menschen Des 20. Jahrhunderts

Transmare Verlag/Kurt Wolff Verlag, Munich 1929 - The uncommon 1929 1st edition of this remarkable August Sander highspot in portrait photography. 60 crisp black-and-white studies, skillful and revealing and very, very moving. Such was the power of this unassuming collection that when the Third Reich came to power in 1933, they set their sites on this book, destroying the original plates and puttting a halt to its publication. This copy, while it's seen some wear to the panels, has maintained its basic soundness. The binding remains sturdy, the plates clean and unmarked. Internally, this is a superior copy, with very light soiling to the preliminaries and, most significantly, no markings or flaws of any kind to the plates. The front panel, on the other hand, shows significant wear --specifically, water damage (a light brown staining) covering almost half of the yellow cloth. The staining is undeniable and (I believe) irreversible but, oddly, blends in with the mustard-yellow cloth and doesn't detract too dramatically from the book's appearance. A perfectly serviceable copy, solidly (and conservatively) a G+. Quarto, 15 pg. preface by the formidable Alfred Doblin (of "Berlin Alexanderplatz") plus the 60 plates. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on one 4to sheet, Palma Mallorca, June 12, 1929

To his sister-in-law, Else Jaffe, Lawrence discusses the publication of one of his books, most likely The Paintings of D.H. Lawrence which was published in London in June of 1929. He also addresses his beliefs about himself. He mentions leaving Palma de Mallorca shortly and wants Frieda (his wife) to ?see after my pictures, as the show is supposed to open this week.? He is referring to an exhibition of his oil paintings at the Warren Gallery in London that opened in mid-June. During the final years of his life, Lawrence produced many oil paintings. The exhibition at the Warren Gallery was raided by police and a number of the paintings were confiscated for indecency. He discusses the book, no doubt his book of paintings, and why he will not send a copy to his correspondent. ?I have a set of the coloured plates... rather good... I hear they have already orders for about 300 copies.... I shan?t send you a copy ? I know you don?t care especially about it - & in these things you belong to the opposite direction, so of course don?t see value in work of this sort. You say Satanish. Perhaps you are right; Lucifer is brighter now than tarnished Michael or shabby Gabriel. All things fall in their turn, now Michael goes down, and whispering Gabriel, and the Son of the Morning will laugh at them all. Yes, I am all for Lucifer, who is really the Morning Star. The real principle of Evil is not anti-Christ or anti-Jehovah, but anti-life. I agree with you, in a sense, that I am with the anti Christ. Only I am not anti-life....? He continues with travel plans for himself and his wife Freida, Else?s sister. If Freida comes to England from Marseille, I shall probably go to North Italy...where it won?t be too hot. This year I don?t want to come very far north ? I feel I am better south of the Alps...This island is a queer place ? so dry...I expect the schwiegermutter [mother-in-law] will have gone back...I was glad to see she was well enough to come to Heidelberg...we will somewhere if not in Baden...? He signs with initials, ?D. H. L.? The letter is published in The Letters of D. H. Lawrence ? James T. Boulton, ed.
