        Autograph letter signed.

[Moscow, 22. V. 1929.. Small 4to. 2 pp.. To his third wife, Natalja, on meetings with Commissioners for Foreign trade, getting some wallpaper remnants, an official trip, etc. "[...] I'm awfully tired, walking through the floors like a salesman, seeing all companies there, chasing from one manager to the other, my work at the Tretjakowa has just been finished yesterday, that means, on the 20th. Then I went to Nemchinovka, but only for a while, but after all Kljun was there, and so we went to Barvikha. Unotchka scolded me to be away from home so often, but it took me a whole week only to get the porcelaine thing settled. Appointments with various officials from the Ministry of Foreign Trade as well as myself make a huge impression. I nearly thought I were a stone that prevents water from flowing, but as this stone raised itself water began to swirl and to bubble. But by now, everything is set up. And everything seems to be quite well now. The Ministry of Foreign Trade has promptly send a note to the porcelain factory at Leningrad requesting to get in touch with me at once, also to send remnants of silicate, wallpapers etc. Sujetin and I will have so much work with this bustle that I don't even know if we both will withstand. Here, it has already come so far that the department of export is going to send me on a business trip abroad. Today (Wednesday) I'm talking to the assistants, tomorrow I will spend the whole day with Unochka, and on Friday I'm going to get the ticket, not knowing for which day. I feel such a strong desire for you and fear that this will prevent me from bringing the whole thing to an end. I expect to leave on Sunday [...]" (transl. from the Russian original). - Malewitsch über sich. Zeitgenossen über Malewitsch. Briefe. Dokumente. Erinnerungen. Kritik. Bd. 1, Moskau 2004, Nr. 13.

        Fairey III F - 1929

Cowes: Beken,, [1929]. Cowes: Beken,, [1929]. Image size: 400 x 500mm Framed size: 580 x 668mm Hand printed in sepia-brown tone from the original glass plate negative. Fine condition. Presented in a Black frame From the Beken archive, printed digitally in Sepia-brown. Frank Beken was born in Canterbury, England in 1880. His father Alfred was a chemist and photographer. In 1888 the family moved to the Isle of Wight. The company "Beken & Son Ltd." was born and Frank was soon seen afloat in a dinghy, photographing the fine vessels that sailed the local waters. He quickly designed his own camera, which was more suited to take photographs at sea: it was made to withstand sea-water and was held in both hands, the shutter being fired by biting a rubber ball gripped tightly between the teeth. The beauty and splendour of sail has been captured by the lenses of the Beken family since those early days.

        Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge [Inscribed]

Cosmopolitan, New York 1929 - Octavo, 247pp., Gilt lettered and decorated cover and spine. Hinges broken inside, but still very good. Jacket has chips and tears with old tape repairs. This copy is inscribed by former President Coolidge and also has the original, almost unobtainable, dust jacket. Seldom seen as such. There is a quite common signed limited edition of this autobiography, but signed and inscribed original first editions are much less common. This copy comes with correspondence from Coolidge's official bookseller, Bridgeman and Lyman in Northampton, MA and from Coolidge's secretary Herman C. Beaty on Coolidge' s personal stationery which both document the original purchase of the book and the obtaining of Coolidge's inscription. Very uncommon as such. John Calvin Coolidge, Jr. (July 4, 1872 - January 5, 1933 ) was the 30th President of the United States (1923–1929). A Republican lawyer from Vermont, Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming governor of that state. His conduct during the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight and gave him a reputation as a man of decisive action. Soon after, he was elected as the 29th Vice President in 1920 and succeeded to the Presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding. Elected in his own right in 1924, he gained a reputation as a small- government conservative, and also as a man who said very little. Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration, and left office with considerable popularity. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Samuel and Max Roth. Good with no dust jacket. 1929. First US Edition; First Printing. Trade Paperback. This copy survived water damage from fire due to previous clamshell box. Professionally restored and ozoned, but some wood smoke scent when opening pages. Chip to top corner of front cover, fragments of spine covering laid on to new spine, chip to bottom corner of rear cover. Some unopened pages. Some text damp-wrinkling, with some dampstaining primarily in margins (see scan). Solid trade paperback.; Modern custom clamshell box, with leather spine label with gilt lettering. Slocum and Cahoon 19. The First American edition (unauthorized). Although title page claims to be the 1927 Paris printing from Shakespeare and Company, this copy has all the proper points as the pirated American first. Most notably, the list of books By the Same Writer has publisher Jonathan Cape mispelled as "Jonthan Cape" (see scan) and there is no title and author on the spine. John J Slocum and Herbert Cahoon; A Bibliography of James Joyce [1882-1941]; 1953 Yale University Press. Slocum and Cahoon state that about 2,000-3,000 copies were printed by Adolph and Rudolph Loewinger of New York for Samuel Roth, publisher of Two Worlds and Two Worlds Monthly, and his brother Max Roth. "It was unauthorized by Joyce and sold illegally in the United States. Many copies of the piracy were seized by the Society for the Suppression of Vice on October 5, 1929." "Copies ... reached Paris and were imported into the United States as genuine copies. One of these, sent by Joyce to Bennett A Cerf of Random House, was used in setting up the first authorized American edition of Ulysses" in 1934." It is unclear how many copies of this pirated edition survived and it is rarely offered for sale. In 2007, the Modern Library named Ulysses # 1 in their list of top 100 novels. Despite the condition issues, this is an opportunity to own the quite uncommon 1929 first American printing of James Joyce's Ulysses, a highspot of modern literature.; [viii], 736 pages .

Like his previous collection of poetry, The Tower (1928), the title and poetry in The Winding Stair was written at and inspired by Yeats' home, the Thoor Ballylee Castle in Galway, Ireland. The castle is a fortified tower home, originally built in the 15th or 16th century, that is today colloquially known as "Yeats' Tower." In both of these works, the poems contain the central themes of the Easter Rising and Irish Civil War. As Yeats writes in this volume's "Notes," "My poems attribute to [Thoor Ballylee] most of the meanings attributed in the past to the Tower - whether watch tower or pharos, and to its winding stair those attributed to gyre or whorl. What those meanings are let the poems say.". Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        The Metropolis of Tomorrow

New York: Ives Washburn,, 1929. Quarto. Original black cloth, titles to spine and upper board in red, With the dust jacket. Attractive contemporary bookplate. Spine a little rolled, corners bumped, a few small spots and scuffs to cloth, a few small spots to endpapers. An excellent copy in the rubbed, dulled, and spotted jacket with chips at the corners and ends of spine and a small tape repair to the verso. First edition, first printing of this groundbreaking book of architectural designs projecting the future of skyscrapers and city planning. Rare in the dust jacket. Hugh Ferriss (1889–1962), "the most brilliant exponent of the American skyscraper", trained as an architect and spent most of his career as a delineator, making drawings of other architect's plans for the purposes of advertising and city planning. During the 1920s he developed a signature style, creating brooding, atmospheric images of monumental structures that loomed over their surroundings. Ferris's drawings regularly featured in periodicals such as Vanity Fair and Harper's, and inspired a generation of architects, artists, comic book authors, and filmmakers.

        [Portfolio]: Photographic Sketches by Hodes

[Los Angeles: Solomon Hodes. circa 1929 - 1930]. Modern portfolio, with 30 loosely inserted mounted images and a mounted hand-lettered title page ("Photographic Sketches by Hodes"). Affixed to the title page is the cover of a small photographic periodical, The Developer of the Los Angeles Camera Club, dated in 1928, with a clipping, presumably from this issue, mentioning Hodes in an account of a photography expedition of the Club to Malibu Lake. The images vary in size, but are all relatively large, most being approximately 7.5" x 9.5". Most are captioned below the image, a couple are captioned within the image. The images show a fair amount of talent, and the subjects are various: bewitching costumed or semi-costumed women, bucolic landscapes, prosaic studies of gnarled older gentlemen, buildings and cityscapes, etc. All are very much of the period. We can find little about Hodes, beyond the bare mention of his existence and that he was born in Russia in 1880 and immigrated to the U.S. around 1916. Our best guess is that these are silver-gelatin prints. A detailed list of the photographs is available upon request. .
