Manuscript and letter preserved in a quarter morocco folding box. </p><p>The working draft of Millikan&#146;s address in tribute to his mentor and colleague Albert A. Michelson (1852-1931), delivered at a dinner honoring both men hosted by the Society of Arts and Sciences in New York, and later published as an article in Science (vol. 69 [1929]: 481-85). Both Millikan and Michelson were Nobel laureates: Millikan had received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1923 for his determination of the charge of the electron and his researches on the photoelectric effect; and Michelson was awarded the same prize in 1907 for his optical precision instruments and the measurements carried out with their aid&#151;particularly his determination of the speed of light and the famous Michelson-Morley experiment, regarded as the first strong evidence against the existence of a luminiferous ether. It was Michelson who in 1897 gave Millikan his first teaching job, at the University of Chicago. While at Chicago Millikan worked as Michelson&#146;s assistant, wrote several important textbooks, and performed the experimental research on the electron charge that helped gain him the Nobel Prize. Millikan went on to become vice chairman and director of the National Research Council, and then in 1921 moved to Pasadena to head the newly established California Institute of Technology. </p><p>Millikan&#146;s eloquent address honors the man who had exerted such a profound influence on his early career. In the course of his tribute, Millikan places Michelson&#146;s work in the context of contemporary physics, noting its significance and interrelationship with the work of Einstein, Lebedev, Aston et al.: </p><p>"The special theory of relativity may be regarded as merely a generalization of the famous Michelson and Morley experiment, another typical Michelsonian attempt to measure with great precision a quantity of fundamental importance, namely, the speed of the Earth through the ether. As everybody knows it came out negative, that is, no such speed, nor any trace of it, could be found . . . Einstein, in 1905, generalized the foregoing result by postulating that it is in the nature of the universe impossible to find the speed of the earth with respect to the ether. This postulate rests most conspicuously upon, and historically grew chiefly out of the negative result of the Michelson-Morley experiment" (p. 5). </p><p>Millikan ended his address with a paean to the value of Michelson&#146;s research and of scientific research in general: </p><p>"Michelson&#146;s economic value!! In the last analysis there is nothing that is practically important at all except our ideas, our group of concepts about the nature of the world and our place in it . . . There is not an idea that I have advanced tonight, a conclusion that I have drawn from Einstein&#146;s equation, from Aston&#146;s curve, from cosmic ray/data that would have been possible had not somebody driven to the limit the precision and physical measurement, and much of it became possible because of Michelson&#146;s own super refined experiments. So true has it been proven to be that human progress &#147;grows out of measurement made in the sixth place of decimals.&#148; Not he, nor anybody else, saw at the time what bearings the result would have. He merely felt in his bones, or knew in his soul, or had faith to believe that accurate knowledge was important. But some of the bearings have already appeared and others will continue to be found for ages yet to be" (p. 11). </p><p>Millikan&#146;s manuscript is accompanied by his brief letter to Kenneth West: &#147;As you request, I am returning the pencil notes that you sent on. Thank you very much for acceding to my request.&#148; </p>

        Autograph poem written about his sailboat "Tummler

Caputh, 1929 (dated by Einstein&#39;s secretary, Helen Dukas, in a pencil note in the upper left corner). 235 x 210 mm. 3 holes punched in upper margin, tape repair along central fold, but very good. From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).</p><p>A charming representation of two of Einstein&#39;s lifelong pleasures--light verse and sailing. Einstein wrote this poem at Caputh, a small town on the Havel River near the lakes Templiner See and the Schwielowsee, where he and his wife, Elsa, had acquired property for a summer home in 1929. The city council of Berlin had intended to present Einstein with a summer home in honor of his fiftieth birthday (March 14, 1929), but because of some embarrassing (and somewhat anti-Semitic) controversy within the council over the gift, Einstein declined the offer. The Einsteins ended up buying the property on their own and building a small cottage on it "in the woods near the water," as Elsa Einstein described it (quoted in Clark, Einstein: The Life and Times, p. 501). To mark this occasion, several of Einstein&#39;s friends combined to buy him a small sailboat, in which he spent many happy hours during his final years in Germany.</p><p>The present autograph is the draft of the inaugural verses that Einstein wrote for his sailboat, which he christened "Tümmler" (porpoise or dolphin). Characteristically, he expressed his thanks both to the friends who purchased the boat for him and to the boat&#39;s designers and builders. The poem can be translated as follows:</p><p>"So, now he hurries away, your proud but plump son, heavier indeed than he is fast, soon he&#39;ll make battle with the waves. Thanks to you who gave him, opening your purses; equal thanks to you who designed and with strong arm built him. Enter you now upon your life, Tümmler will be your name; keep yourself well, and don&#39;t capsize; take pleasure in the cooling sea."</p>

Boxed.</p><p>First Edition of the founding document of information theory. In "Über die Entropieverminderung in einem thermodynamischen System bei Eingriffen intelligenter Wesen" [On the reduction of entropy in a thermodynamic system by the intervention of intelligent beings], Szilard described a theoretical model that served both as a heat engine and an information engine, establishing the relationship between information (manipulation and transmission of bits) and thermodynamics (manipulation and transfer of energy and entropy). He was one of the first to show that "Nature seems to talk in terms of information" (Seife, Decoding the Universe, p. 77).</p><p>In his paper Szilard addressed the problem of "Maxwell&#39;s demon," a thought experiment posed by James Clerk Maxwell in his Theory of Heat (1871) as a challenge to the second Law of Thermodynamics. This law states that the entropy of an isolated system not in equilibrium will tend to increase over time, reaching its maximum level at equilibrium. Maxwell speculated that </p><p>"if we conceive of a being whose faculties are so sharpened that he can follow every molecule in its course, such a being, whose attributes are as essentially finite as our own, would be able to do what is impossible to us. For we have seen that molecules in a vessel full of air at uniform temperature are moving with velocities by no means uniform, though the mean velocity of any great number of them, arbitrarily selected, is almost exactly uniform. Now let us suppose that such a vessel is divided into two portions, A and B, by a division in which there is a small hole, and that a being, who can see the individual molecules, opens and closes this hole, so as to allow only the swifter molecules to pass from A to B, and only the slower molecules to pass from B to A. He will thus, without expenditure of work, raise the temperature of B and lower that of A, in contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics."</p><p>Maxwell&#39;s demon exploits the random, statistical nature of matter in order to decrease entropy in a closed system without any expenditure of energy-a state of affairs that is physically impossible. Recognizing the flaw in Maxwell&#39;s concept, Szilard countered the earlier physicist&#39;s challenge as follows:</p><p>"Szilard realized that the act of measuring the position of the atom (or in the Maxwell case, the speed of an incoming atom) must, in some way, increase the entropy of the universe, counteracting the demon&#39;s reduction of the universe&#39;s entropy. When a demon performs a measurement, he is getting an answer to a question: Is the atom on the right side of the box or the left side of the box? Is the atom hot or cold? Should I open a shutter or not? So a measurement is an extraction of information from the particle. That information does not come for free. Something about that information-either extracting it or processing it-would increase the entropy of the universe. In fact, Szilard calculated that the "cost" of that information was a certain amount of useful energy-more precisely, kT log 2 joules for every bit of information, where T is the temperature of the room that the demon is in and k is the same constant that Boltzmann used in his entropy equation" (Seife, Decoding the Universe [2007], pp. 78-79). </p><p>One of the most brilliant thinkers of the twentieth century, Szilard is best known for his work in nuclear physics: he conceived the idea of a nuclear chain reaction in 1933, filed a patent for a simple nuclear reactor in 1934, and collaborated with Fermi in the first demonstration of a chain reaction in 1942. In 1939 Szilard wrote a confidential letter to President Roosevelt outlining the possibility of nuclear weapons; this letter, co-signed by Einstein, led directly to the foundation of the Manhattan Project. Szilard worked on the Manhattan Project during the Second World War, but opposed the use of the atomic bomb as a weapon of destruction, instead advocating for a demonstration of the bomb&#39;s power in the hope that the mere threat of such a weapon would force Germany and Japan to surrender. Horrified by the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Szilard turned from nuclear physics to biology after the war, and became an outspoken opponent of nuclear proliferation. </p>

Tissue guards with plate legends in Japanese and English. The text includes Prefatory Notes, Introduction, list of plates, and index all in Japanese and English as well. The volumes in a quarter leather and paper covered intact but worn slipcase with rubbing to the leather and some loss of the paper covering. Slipcase has a leather spine label with gilt lettering. Despite its wear, the slipcase has done an admirable job of protecting the volumes. Folios. A Scarce complete set.

This edition features a scarcely found complete dust jacket - it is unclipped and has light tone on the spine, there are some small rubbed splits along the top edge, chipping at the heads and corners with small open tears at the top rear hinge area and the bottom rear open edge, just below centre on the spine is a small chevron where a tear has opened up. The oatmeal cloth covers are clean with a light tone to the spine and some mild bumping at the corners. The content is clean and free from internal markings, there is some very light spotting around the endpapers and outer page edges. . Good. 1929.

        The Pilgrim on the Earth

This is a Limited First Edition as detailed on the page after the half title page, see photograph above, please note this book has not been officiallynumbered. Contains 12 wood engravings in colour including the frontispiece. The is the number 178 written in thick, black pen on the first end papers and again on the top and bottom page edges. Julian Hartridge Green, or Julien Green (19001998), was a French born American author of several novels including Lviathan and Each in His Own Darkness. He wrote primarily in French, but was not a French citizen. Born into a Protestant family, he converted to Catholicism in 1916. The next year, at the age of 16, he volunteered his services as an ambulanceman in the American Field Service. When his age was discovered his enlistment was annulled. He immediately signed up with an ambulance unit of the American Red Cross, and when that six-month term of service ended in 1918, he enlisted in the French Army, in which he served as a second lieutenant of artillery until 1919. He was educated at the University of Virginia in the United States from 1919-22. His career as one of the major figures of French litterature in the 20th century started soon after his return from the United States. In July of 1940, after France&#39;s defeat, he went back to America. In 1942, he was mobilized and sent to New York to work at the United States Office of War Information. From there, for almost a year, five times a week, he would address France as part of the radio broadcasts of Voice of America, working inter alia with Andr Breton and Yul Brynner. Green went back to France right after the end of World War II. A devout Catholic, most of his books focused on the ideas of faith and religion as well as hypocrisy. He inherited a sense patriotism from his mother, who came from a distinguished southern family. They moved to France for his fathers job. In France, both during his life and today, Julien Green&#39;s fame rests principally not on his novels, but on his journals, published in ten volumes, and spanning the years 1926-1976. These avidly-read and well-known volumes provide a chronicle of his literary and religious life, and a unique window on the artistic and literary scene in Paris over a span of half a century. Green&#39;s style, austere and employing to great effect the pass simple, a literary tense nearly abandoned by many of his French contemporaries, found favor with the Acadmie Franaise, a fact mentioned in his election to that august body. Green resigned from the Acadmie shortly before his death, citing his American heritage and loyalties. . He died on August 13, 1998 in Paris and was buried in the parish church of Klagenfurt, Austria. Apparently, Green was greatly moved by a statue of the Virgin Mary during a visit there in 1990. Subsequently, he expressed a desire to be buried in one of the church&#39;s chapels. Julien Green is the adoptive father of the gay fiction writer, ric Jourdan. Green was the first non-French national ever to be elected to the Acadmie franaise. Fittingly, he succeded Franois Mauriac, taking chair number 22 on the 3rd of June, 1971. It was commonly believed he had dual citizenship but in fact, although born in Paris and writing almost exclusively in the French language, he had never become a French citizen. President Georges Pompidou offered him French citizenship in 1972 following Green&#39;s election to the Acadmie, but - faithful to the partiotic, sudiste spirit his mother inspired in him - Green refused it. Condition: the binding is tight and from and both covers are firmly attached. There is some minor wear to the extremities. Internally the book is clean and bright. This is the number 178 written in thick, black pen on the first end papers and again on the top andbottom page edges. 178 is written in purple ink on the top of the title page. The pages are roughly cut as called for..

First edition in book form of fifty of Ransome&#39;s angling essays from the Manchester Guardian, together with extracts from the works of Aksakov. Hammond records that 2000 copies were printed. &#39;In his autobiography Ransome recalled a party at which he spoke with the publisher Jonathan Cape, whose firm not long before had taken over Racundra&#39;s First Cruise from Allen & Unwin. Erste Ausgabe. - Mit dem Schutzumschlag sehr selten. - Das Buch erschien anlässlich der bahnbrechenden Werkbundausstellung 'Film und Foto', kurz FiFo, zusammen mit Werner Gräffs 'Es kommt der neue Fotograf' sowie dem von Franz Roh und Jan Tschichold herausgegebenen Band 'Foto-Auge'. Gräff und Richter ließen ihre Bände beide bei Hermann Reckendorfer verlegen, der u.a. auch 'Die Form' publizierte. Ähnlich wie Gräff war Richter mit dem Problem der Bildbeschaffung konfrontiert, so dass er auf seine eignen filmischen Arbeiten zurückgreifen musste. Um den Film in seiner Dynamik mit Abbildungen dokumentieren zu können, entschied sich Richter dazu, neben die Einzelbilder vor allem Filmstreifen zu gesellen; eine Methode, die seinerzeit jedoch von anderen Autoren nicht aufgegriffen werden sollte. Im Zentrum der Auseinandersetzung Richters stand der Film als eigenständige Kunstform, die sich gegenüber dem bloßen Unterhaltungsfilm zu behaupten hatte. Denn spätestens mit der Einführung des Tonfilms im Erscheinungsjahr wurde der Film zum Massenmedium. (Vgl. Manche Einzelbeobachtungen, die Richter in Bezug auf den zeitgenössischen Film machte, antizipierten bereits in Teilaspekten die Auffassung einer Kulturindustrie, wie sie später von Adorno und Horkheimer in der 'Dialektik der Aufklärung' geprägt werden sollte. So schrieb Richter zum Bereich der Filmthemen: 'Wir wissen sehr gut, daß Reichtum, Schönheit und Macht gerade von denen am meisten geliebt werden, die sie nicht besitzen und daß sie ihre Sehnsucht danach ins Kino treibt. Aber wir wissen auch, daß sie, nachdem sie sich dort berauscht haben, nur noch elender werden [...] Sie werden erst recht unfähig, eine menschliche Lösung für ihr Dasein zu finden. Hier ist das Kino der schlimmste Feind der Schwachen, Entmutigten und Unerfahrenen'. (53) Doch sah er, etwas optimistischer als später die Theoretiker der Frankfurter Schule, die Möglichkeit der positiven Veränderung, in dem er folgerte: 'Die Aufgaben einer neuen Generation von Filmautoren werden darin bestehen, den Film zur geistigen Befreiung des Menschen und zum Aufbau einer vernünftigen Welt zu verwenden.' (53) In seinem Vorwort machte Richter deutlich, welche Intention diese Publikation haben sollte: 'Sie sind Filmgegner? So wie der Film heute ist, kann er gar nicht genug Gegner haben. Der Filmgegner von heute hat eine Kulturmission zu erfüllen: Den schlechten Film zu bekämpfen, zu protestieren, den Protest zu organisieren. Je mehr Filmgegner, um so größer die Möglichkeit für bessere Filme.' Van Royen had Lucien Pissarro de opdracht gegeven om een speciale letter te ontwerpen voor zijn eigen privépers De Zilverdistel. De opvallende vervlochten initialen werden door Van Royen getekend en door hemzelf in buxushout gesneden. Exemplaar in origineel perkament met de naam van de auteur in Disteltype op de rug en een verguld kader op de voor- en achterkant. Titelpagina in houtgesneden kapitalen. Drukkersmerk van de heilige Kunera aan de oever van de Rijn (van Pissarro). In druk gedateerd: 20 april 1929.

Wraps show some extremity wear, staining. Some spotting to Section 1 (see scan). All four sections wraps, front and back panels are uncreased and unchipped, with the exception of the rear panel of section 4, which shows three small extremity chips, corner creasing. The spines show age toning, with some staining to uppers. Some spine wear (chipping to tail of Section 1, head of section 2 and crease to Section 4), but all four sections are holding the signatures just fine. A very readable set. Very tight, and crisp considering its vulnerable binding. Internally clean and bright. Sections 1 and 4 VeryGood, sections 2 and 3 VeryGood+.
