Farlow's research on plant diseases "helped lay the foundations for a science of phytopathology. His investigations of potato rot, diseases of oranges and olives, mildews of grapes, black knot of plum and cherry, and onion smut considered the taxonomic, physiological, and pathological nature of the causal fungi. He stressed the importance of understanding fungal life cycles in order to recommend control strategies for plant diseases...Through his own collecting, purchases of collections, and the assistance of students and correspondents, Farlow built the world-renowned collection that would later bear his name. To augment the herbarium, he created an outstanding reference library on the fungi and lower forms of plants" (ANB).

Du mögest also überall lesen statt etwa: Takt so und so mf! richtig: bitte mf!
