3 autograph letters signed ("R. Slatin").

[Presumably Merano], 1929. - Large 4to. Altogether (1+3+2=) 6 pp. on 4 fols. To a "dear Doctor and friend", mainly reporting on the health of his daughter Anne Marie: "Leider kann ich nicht Donnerstag wie beabsichtigt durch Bozen fahren - Anne Marie fiebert leider so stark daß der Arzt die Reise nicht erlaubt - hoffentlich geht es bald besser so Gott will! [.]" ("Dienstag [1]929"). - "[.] (September 20). - Slatin's daugther was to be cured of her suffering; she died in November 2007 at the age of 91. - Each letter on stationery with printed address; left margins with punched holes (slightly touching text).

The Old Sixteenth Being A Record of the 16th Battalion, A.I.F., During the Great War, 1914-1918

Perth: History Committee of the 16th Battalion Association. 1929. Large octavo size [16x24cm approx]. Good+ Condition in brown buckram with gilt title to face and spine. Illustrated with Black and White Photographs - some fold-out, and maps. Includes Decorations won; Battalion Casualties [table]; AIF Infantry Casualties [table]; Officers' casualties; Officers captured by enemy; Engagements and Casualties; Officers Promoted from Ranks and Nominal Roll. A strong, solid copy with the following defects - RSL stamps to top of endpapers, Annotations to front free endpaper and to a small number of pages [about 15 pages in all], some small nicks to page edges, and one photograph has names added [obviously by someone who know them]. Pasted at the rear is a copy of an "Extract from Lt.Col, Pope's memo of Aug.8th, 1915" - which is followed by a letter [dated 1939] sent by A/WO1 F. Munroe to an unknown person in which we recounts an act of gallantry by [then] Pte. Forde. The name R.A. Forde is written on the front free endpaper - possibly as an ownership indicator as the notes beneath it do not seem to mention a Forde. This would also explain the letter at the rear. Foreword by Lt-Gen Sir John Monash. 274 pages The 16th Battalion AIF was raised from 16 September 1914, six weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. Three-quarters of the battalion were recruited in Western Australia, and the rest in South Australia. With the 13th, 14th and 15th Battalions it formed the 4th Brigade commanded by Colonel John Monash. The 4th Brigade landed at Anzac late in the afternoon of 25 April 1915. . 1st Edition. Hardback.

Recherches sur la théorie des quanta.Paris: Masson et Cie., 1924.

First edition, rare, of de Broglie's revolutionary doctoral thesis on the quantum theory, which, Einstein said, "lifted a corner of the great veil" (Isaacson, Einstein: His Life and Universe, p. 327). In this work he developed the startling and revolutionary idea that material particles such as electrons have a wave as well as a corpuscular nature, analogous to the dual behavior of light demonstrated by Einstein and others in the first two decades of the century. De Broglie was awarded the 1929 Nobel Prize in physics "for his discovery of the wave nature of electrons." De Broglie's book Ondes et mouvements (1926), selected by Carter and Muir for the Printing and the Mind of Man exhibition and catalogue (1967), was an expansion of ideas first published in his thesis. Unlike his book, de Broglie's thesis was issued in a very small edition. Norman 347.

"With his thesis, Louis de Broglie had tried to formulate consistently all of his ideas about what he considered to be the essentials of quantum theory. These essentials implied the existence of finite, discrete 'isolated bits of energy,' which had been introduced by Planck and Einstein . . . From the very beginning of his involvement with quantum theory, de Broglie had adopted Einstein's light-quantum hypothesis and had looked for some sort of unification of the dynamical description of light-quanta with that of atoms and electrons. This unification, which he had achieved by endowing the light-quantum with a mass, and considering it as a particle moving with relativistic velocity, had enabled him to approach the fundamental question posed by Henri Poincaré already at the first Solvay Conference in 1911: Can one construct a suitable dynamics of quanta? De Broglie had succeeded in doing so by inverting the method, through which Einstein had obtained the light-quantum; that is, he had associated with all material particles a wave motion. This phase-wave hypothesis allowed him indeed to formulate the principles of a new, quantum-theoretical dynamics describing particles and light-quanta" (Mehra & Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 1, pp. 601-2).

Three years after the publication of de Broglie's thesis, the diffraction of electrons from the surface of a solid crystal was experimentally observed by C. J. Davisson and L. H. Germer. They showed that an electron beam was scattered from the surface of a crystal of nickel at the precise angles predicted for the diffraction of x-rays according to Bragg's formula, with a wavelength predicted by de Broglie. Also in 1927, G. P. Thomson, the son of J. J. Thomson, reported his experiments, in which a beam of energetic electrons was diffracted by a thin foil. Thomson found ring patterns that resembled the x-ray patterns made with powdered (polycrystalline) samples. When the wavelength of the electrons was changed by changing their incident energy, the diameters of the diffraction rings change proportionally, again as expected from Bragg's equation. These experiments proved that de Broglie's matter waves have observable physical effects. The 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Davisson and Germer by Thomson for "for their experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals".. 8vo (229 x 143 mm), pp [iv], 111, [1]. Original printed wrappers, a little chipped and creased, small split in upper spine, uncut and unopened. First two leaves spotted, but a very good and unsophisticated copy

Overall, a presentable copy. Wade 166. Three Things is a poem that is published as No. 18 in Faber's Ariel Poems, a series of 38 pamphlets published from 1927-1931. Each pamphlet paired an author's single poem with illustrations by a selected artist. "Three Things" is an eerie exploration of the "three dear things that women know;" specifically, Yeats alludes to children, lovers, and her "rightful man." This volume is illustrated with two images by renowned English artist Gilbert Spencer, who recorded his first encounter with Yeats in his autobiography Memoirs of a Painter: "At that time I had scarcely read any poetry, but did not find listening to W. B. Yeats difficult at all, easy in fact; all he needed was the shape of his listeners in his line of vision, though visionary he most certainly was.". Illus. by Spencer, Gilbert. Signed by Author. Limited. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        A Farewell To Arms

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929 First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, gilt labels with black lettering to the front board and spine; in original pictorial dust jacket with artwork by Cleon. Fine and bright book, with just some light offsetting to the free endpapers; unclipped dust jacket, with faint creasing and wear to spine ends, very light toning and faint rubbing to the spine, faint creasing to the bottom of the rear panel, tiny closed tear to the bottom edge of the otherwise fresh front panel, else fine. Overall, a bright and fresh copy, free of any repairs or restoration. Housed in a custom black slipcase with morocco spine and matching chemise. Set in Italy during World War I, A Farewell to Arms tells the story of a romance between the protagonist Frederic Henry, an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse tending to wounded soldiers. Widely considered one of the best novels to come from the war, the novel is, as the dust jacket proclaims, "the very essence of beauty as twisted and made tragic by war" that "expresses the innermost nature of war." Unlike many of the other war novels by contemporary writers, The Sun Also Rises addresses not only the aftermath of WWI but the events of the war itself and specifically the Italian Front around the Battle of Caporetto of Autumn 1917. Accordingly, it stood out amongst the war novels, becoming Hemingway's first best-seller and establishing him as a premier American writer. Interestingly, in his 1958 interview with The Paris Review, Hemingway famously remarked, "I rewrote the ending to Farewell to Arms, the last page of it, thirty-nine times before I was satisfied.". 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
