[portrait], foreword, tribute, author's preface, illustrated, portraits, index. Foreword by Major General Hunter Liggett, U.S.A., Retired. Edited by Brigadier General W. C. Brown, Colonel C. C. Smith and E. A. Brininstool. General Baldwin joined the Union Army in 1861 and was mustered out in June of 1865, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at the age of 22. After the Civil War he entered the Regular Army and attained the rank of Captain 5th Infantry in March 1879. He led troops in numerous battles with Indians throughout the West. His actions in an attack on an Indian village on the Red River in Montana on December 18, 1876, earned him a brevet of Captain. Baldwin served with distinction under General Nelson A. Miles as chief of scouts during campaigns against Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. He was eventually advanced to the rank of Major General, after which he retired from active duty. Baldwin won two Congressional Medals of Honor during his active service time. Howes B57 says "General Baldwin campaigned against Indians all over the West and was the only officer to receive twice the Medal of Honor." Photographs include a picture of "Yellowstone" Kelly, a scout from 1876-1881 on the Yellowstone River, Montana, and one of Buffalo Bill taken in 1881.         Original Drawings for The Fox and the Stork.

(Moscow 1929) - Six pen-and-ink drawings colored with watercolor, with an expressionistic look, each measuring 7 3/4 by 6 1/2 inches. These delicate, stylized illustrations are tinted with shades of orange, purple, and green. The first drawing has the title and illustrator’s name, Ausbrey, below it in Russian. The images recount La Fontaine’s fable of getting one’s just deserts: the fox exasperates the stork by offering her food in a plate, which, with his long beak, the stork cannot eat. However, the stork retaliates by offering the fox a drink from a narrow, long-necked vessel. Attractive and unique illustrations for a book never published. Two have paperclip marks to edge, else fine, mounted without adhesive in a paper portfolio.

        LA DAME AUX CAMÉLIAS

Paris: L. Carteret, 1929. No. 4 OF 175 COPIES n. Hardcover. 295 x 210 mm (11 5/8 x 8 1/4"). 2 p.l., 297 pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 4 OF 175 COPIES. ELEGANT CRIMSON MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT AND ONLAID, BY HENRI NOULHAC (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed in gilt with onlaid white camellias at the corners, central medallion containing a large red camellia surrounded by a wreath containing half a dozen more of the same flowers in white on a burnished gilt ground; raised bands, spine compartments with mitered frames and camellia medallion centerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with multiple gilt rules, ivory moiré silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Original wrappers preserved. In a matching calf-lined and morocco-lipped slipcase. With 20 color plates printed "à la poupée," captioned tissue guards. A Large Paper Copy. IN MINT CONDITION. This is an unsurpassable copy, in a binding of considerable beauty, of a luxury edition of Dumas' tragic tale of a courtesan, "The Lady of the Camellias," better known as "Camille." Inspired by his lover, the courtesan Marie Duplessis, it is the best-known work of the younger Dumas (1824-95). First published as a novel in 1848, it was later adapted for the stage, and has since inspired an opera ("La Traviata"), three ballets, and numerous films. As with the next item, Noulhac has designed his binding to complement the contents of the book, and its richness is an appropriate reflection of the refinement of our deluxe edition. Henri Noulhac (1866-1931) was one of the foremost binders and gilders of his generation, an artisan described as "a superlative craftsman" by Duncan & De Bartha (who reproduce four of his bindings in their "Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding"). Noulhac was born in Chateauroux, where he served his apprenticeship, then moved in 1894 to Paris, where he established his atelier at 10 rue de Buci. His work attracted several eminent clients, including the celebrated collector and binding historian Henri Béraldi, who became his main patron. In the 1920s, Noulhac gained a reputation as a binding instructor, numbering Rose Adler among his students. The pleasing plates here are based on the wood engravings done for the 1858 edition by Paul Gavarni (1804-66), a caricaturist and book illustrator known for his apt portrayals of the fashionable crowd. They are produced using the so-called "poupée" printing technique, also known as dolly printing. Béguin described the process as "an intaglio plate coulour printing technique" which "consists in applying some ink on the plate and spreading it out with one's finger tip wrapped up in a strip of cloth. This method is notable for the fact that it allows the printer to put several colours on the same plate contemporaneously." According to the National Gallery of Art, "the method takes its name from the poupée (doll), the small ball-shaped wad of fabric that is used to ink the plate.".

        Brigadier-General R.B. Bradford, V.C., M.C. and his Brothers

[London printed, but Durham: For the family,], 1929. Octavo. Original blue ribbed cloth on bevelled boards, title gilt to the spine, and to the upper board together with the crest of the Durham Light Infantry. Triple-fold photogravure frontispiece, printed in sepia, facsimile signatures. Very slightly rubbed at the extremities, spine a touch sunned, else a very good copy. First edition, one of just 50 copies printed on japon. No copy on COPAC, no copy in BL, not in IWM, a single copy (Calgary) on OCLC. The four Bradford brothers were the sons of a Durham colliery owner. Three were killed in the war; two won the VC, the only brothers to do so; and the third won the MC. The survivor Thomas Bradford was awarded the DSO for his services with the 8th Bn. DLI. This copy inscribed by Thomas and by Major Welch, one of the compilers: "To George Hunter, To whom that part of the book which deals with Roland Bradford owes so much." Loosely inserted two-page letter from Welch to Hunter: "The book owes more to you than to anybody else, and in sending you a copy I wish to express to you again my warm thanks for the difficult work you did in bringing it into being." Hunter has added a page of pencilled notes on his involvement in the writing of the book, and on the delays that attended its final publication. Loosely inserted news-clipping about Sir Thomas (as he later became) Bradford's retirement as a magistrate in Durham in 1961 at the age of 75; he died in 1966. A nicely provenanced copy of a desperately uncommon book.

        Carbon copy Typescript Lecture Notes].

Göttingen -33 1929 - 5 vols., carbon copy typescripts with inserted mathematical formulae in manuscript, text on rectos only, folio, original card wrapers, paer labels on spine completed in MS, variously faded and flaked in places, good A possibly unique set of notebooks compiled by Fritz John and his fellow student and future wife Charlotte of the lectures they attended while students at Göttingen from 1929 to 1933. The Johns were required to take full sets of notes of each lecture, turning them in for appraisal by the lecturer before collecting them the next day. But the Johns went much further and typed up their notes, mimeographed them, and had them bound as the present volumes. They present a remarkable snapshot of the graduate teaching at what was then arguably the finest mathematical centre in the world, just prior to its disintegration caused by Hitler's decree in 1933 that ‘non-aryans’must be expelled from teaching posts. The most important of Fritz John’s teachers, Richard Courant, also had to leave Germany at the same time, where upon he established in New York the Mathematical Instiute that now bears his name - and where Fritz John reseached and taught for may years.Comprising: 1. Vorlesungen ueber kontinuerliche Gruppen, by B. L. van der Waerden, Summer Semester, 1929, ff. [v], 203 (signed by Fritz John on title page); 2.
