The Derrydale Press, New York 1929 - No. 4 of only 50 sets. 1 vols. Plate size 13-1/4 x 17 inches. "It has been said that in Ireland the inevitable never happens, and the impossible invariably occurs."Edith ?none Somerville (1858-1949), with her cousin Violet Martin (1862-1915), embarked on a notable women's literary collaboration and wrote under the name of Somerville & Ross. Their series of admirable tales of Irish life, some humorous, some tragic, captures the flavor of rural life and everywhere demonstrates their sensitivity to distinctively Irish turns of phrase. Among their best-loved stories are the three books narrating incidents in the life of Major Sinclair Yeates, Resident Magistrate at Skebawn. Published between 1899 and 1915, the Irish R.M. stories are filled with humor, sport, and deftly observed, colorful character sketches. Somerville's cousin died suddenly in 1915; Somerville participated in a number of seances with medium Jem Barlow in 1916, and by the end of 1916, Somerville had resumed writing. She thereafter maintained that she was in constant communication with Violet's spirit. Somerville was also an accomplished illustrator, and in the late 1920s Eugene V. Connett, 3d, proprietor of the Derrydale Press, persuaded her to produce these illustrations from the Irish R.M. books. The limitation states 50 sets, but perhaps only 30 sets were in fact colored and signed.Plate I: A CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE. "Music, even, was not wanting to our progress, and old Flynn, bleating shrilly upon his horn to the hounds below, became idyllic." From Further Experiences of an Irish R.M. Plate II: OCCASIONAL LICENCES. "'Every one'll say I told Slipper to open the gate', said Flurry, grinning." An amusing steeplechase from Some Experiences of an Irish R.M.Plate III: PUT DOWN ONE AND CARRY TWO. "I seemed to myself merely an imbecile, sitting in the heavy rain, staring at a stone wall." From In Mr. Knox's Country. Plate IV: THE COMTE DE PRALINES. "The Comte de Pralines, standing knee-deep in baying hounds ? Miss McCrory squealed 'Yoicks'!" From In Mr. Knox's Country. PRODUCED IN A VERY SMALL LIMITATION, THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE DERRYDALE PRESS SPORTING PRINTS SERIES. Ordeman pp. 49-50 "now among the most highly valued of the Derrydale prints"; Hudson p. 64 1 vols. Plate size 13-1/4 x 17 inches [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Aboriginals and Half-Castes of Central Australia and North Australia

Victoria: H.J. Green, Government Printer, 1929. Foolscap folio, 63 pp. of which 19 pages are black & white plates (two photographs to a page), a map and a diagram of the 'Proposed Half Caste Home Aboriginal Compound, Darwin N.T.', very good in recent cloth, leather spine label. With numerous photographic illustrations. Bleakley's influential report to government on the life of Aborigines in northern and central Australia. Bleakley's proposal was the main political impetus for the creation of a series of reserves in the north, most particularly in Arnhem Land, as well as Bathurst, Melville and Wessel Islands. Importantly, Bleakley was against most of the restrictive inter-marriage policies then being considered, a position which he continued to promote for many years to come. In the late 1930s he commented that it 'is essential, first of all, to realize that we have no right to attempt to destroy their national life. Like ourselves, they are entitled to retain their racial entity and racial pride.'With a suite of fascinating photographs of conditions in the regions under review.

The images are fixed with photo-corners to heavy black stock, and many have captions in white below the images. A leaf at the front, printed and accomplished by hand, identifies the photographer as Mrs. Pearl Davis Reynolds, although the photographs of her were taken by another.         Painted Veils

New York: Horace Liveright, 1929. Presentation Copy. Leather bound. Fine internally; beautiful, tight binding but with light bumping to upper corners. No wear to gilt.. Mejeska. Stunning. Rich, red, 3/4 leather with 6 bands. Elaborate and fine gilt tooling and devices in each compartment. Possibly hand-painted magenta/hyacinth/gold geometric design on paper finishes the cover and provides matching end papers. TEG. 309 pp. Color frontis and 11 additional color plates by Majeska (as published) and also with one signed, original (watercolor over drawing?), tipped-in plate (between frontis and title page) which was created and then used for the illustration No. XII in this book. This volume is one of no more than 12 thus bound and composed presentation copies. James Huneker, a forgotten name today, is oft cited as the most perceptive American culture essayist in the early 20th Century. Huneker (1857-1921) was a music critic who also wrote with passion and insight about art, literature and theatre. This deeply-felt novel,(Painted Veils), published just before his death, is a fascinating (and modern) philosophical treatise on love, sex, marriage, the creative urge, religion, God and the painful truths of living. Without satire or sentimentality, Huneker succinctly examines worldly behaviour. "Character is plot," he writes, "but plot is not character." His hero, a young drama critic, falls in love with an aspiring soprano who will not let any emotion stand in her way. He's drawn to a Good Woman who likes to conjure up make believe 'dream-children' and expresses his lust with a perky trollope who reminds the gents to leave their money on the mantlepiece. Others in the Huneker salon of maxims, axioms and paradoxes are a deceitful music critic and a seminarian who flies too close to the sun.The hovering characters here are Goethe, Balzac, Huysmans, and Chopin, Liszt, Wagner -- all referenced. The author scorns conventional rules of novel writing: characters come and go; viewpoints are changed within two sentences. It's not a polished "novel," or maybe even a good one, but it is a gleaming cerebral hour-glass that reminds us, in Huneker's words: "Truth is stranger than morals" and "Hypocrisy rules the world." (review by Sketchbook on; The illustrations are by Majeska, an exotic figure who was an artist, decorator, and book illustrator, as well as a costume designer for the Ziegfeld Follies and movie producer Cecil B. DeMille. Many of her illustrations also appeared in Vanity Fair magazine. Majeska illustrated a 1930 limited edition of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde), Karen Blixen's Fantastic Tales, and several other well-known books. Majeska always maintained the mystique of being of European origin but did actually have formal European training. Madame Yna Anastasia Perpetua Majeska (1891-1959, otherwise known as Henrietta Marie Stern, or Mrs. Ephraim Adir, was born in Philadelphia as Yna, baptized as Yna Anastasia Perpetua, had married names of both Dannenbaum and Adir, and reportedly picked up Majeska from a vision while praying in southern California.

Our Exagmination Round His Factification For Incamination of Work in Progress

London: Faber and Faber Limited,, [1929]. With letters of protest by G.V.L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in silver. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the rather tanned, price-clipped dust jacket. First Edition, First Printing, UK Issue. This early critique of Joyce's final work was published some 10 years prior to the publication of the finished novel. Part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. A myth surrounding this work is that one or both of the two letters of protest were written by Joyce himself. However both authors existed - indeed Beach herself commissioned Slingsby. Dixon's effort - which is marvelous - was an unsolicited one by a Russian émigré who was to die in Paris in 1929, just as the book was published.

Important Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on separate 4to sheets of lined paper stamped with name, address and date, [Glen Ellen] Sonoma Co., June 20, 1910

To the noted bibliographer and book collector, author of "High Spots in American Literature" (1929), Merle Johnson. Jack London writes about his yet to be published work, "The Scarlet Plague." This work, a novella first published in "London Magazine" in 1912 and in book form in 1915, is a post-apocalyptic tale. London addresses his correspondent as "Mr. Johnson" and writes in response to Johnson's recent letter. "I've got a twenty-thousand word yarn, just finished... a pseudo-scientific story dealing with the things that happened in the twenty-first century when a new micro-organic enemy smote mankind and left only several survivors." He asks if Mr. Johnson would have a read. "Will you care to glance at it?" He announces the birth of his daughter, "Have just had a visit from the stork - a girl." Unfortunately, this child died 38 hours after she was born. Written in his large hand and fully signed, "Jack London." This letter is not in his collected letters edited by Hendricks and Shepard. Unpublished according to our research. A review of London's story from the perspective of the US Center's for Disease Control sees the work as the first foray in modern literature into catastrophic pandemics. The story set in America, takes place in 2073, sixty years after the Red Death nearly destroyed the world in 2013. The public fear of widespread death from uncontrollable disease almost seems prescient, particularly in light of the influenza pandemic of 1918-19, as do the class disparities presented in his dystopian future.

Housed in a quarter morocco solander box. Some minor wear to base of the spine and at the corners but very good indeed. First edition, first impression, private issue being one of just 50 copies on japon bound in leather. With the author's superb signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "Aldous & Maria [Huxley] from D.H.L." A perfect association of a key book of Lawrence's later period. Pansies is a series of acerbic point pieces and was written as an immediate reaction to the storm of criticism caused by publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1928. A typically bitter and spirited Lawrencian jeux it appeared in several formats the present example being the fullest and most limited version. Maria and Aldous Huxley were at this time Lawrence's closest friends, they visited each other frequently many letters passed between them particularly at this time and specifically in the subject of this book.
