The Brook Kerith. A Syrian Story with twelve engravings by Stephen Gooden.

William Heinemann Ltd, London 1929 - First illustrated Edition. No.54 of 375 copies, signed by Moore and Gooden. 12 original copper engravings (nine full-page). Tall 8vo, original full vellum, gilt lettering on spine, untrimmed. Few dark spots on the vellum as usual, edges a little darkened, otherwise good. In 1913 the important Irish author George Moore (1852-1933) journeyed to Jerusalem to research background for his novel The Brook Kerith. This book is based on the supposition that a non-divine Christ did not die on the cross but was nursed back to health and eventually travelled to India to learn wisdom which obviously embroiled Moore in considerable controversy." Moore importance was huge. According to Richard Ellmann he heavily influenced Joyce and is often referred to as the first great modern Irish novelist.       Madrid 1929 - Materia: Libro del siglo XX. Poesía. Canarias. ilustración. Modernismo. Ultraísmo. Surrealismo. Gods' Man and Mad Man's Drum (two volume set) with signed self-portrait

New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1929 & 1930. First editions. Two volume set in a boxed. Octavos [21 cm] 1/4 black cloth over black and white illustrated boards. Both volumes near fine. In publisher's slipcase that is very good. Self portrait is fine. Ward's first and second "wordless novels" sold in the Jonathan Cape slipcase that has the same artwork as the boards of Mad Man's Drum. This set was issued with a signed self portrait of Ward. This set and print were likely made as a promotional piece and gifted to friends of the publisher and artist. The self-portrait was limited to 100 copies. Scarce Ward wrote of the works "I had earlier believed that every block should be conceived in the simplest terms possible, then cut with an absolute minimum of tool work. I had worked on the premise that every image should be developed only as far as was necessary to produce a comprehensible statement for that particular point in the visual sequence. Now, with those earlier miles behind me, it seemed reasonable to take a different approach to the actual cutting the blocks. In God's Man, except for the use of round and flat gravers to remove the white areas, all the rendering of figures and landscapes had been done with a single line tool. I Madman's Drum, by contrast, I sought to develop a wider range of tool work and utilized small round gravers to break up a large dark area with small jabs of the tool, thus achieving a variety both of tonal effect and textural quality. At the same time, I put more emphasis on decorative patterns in such things as dress material and the walls of interiors, which I hoped would not only result in richer and more varied impact from block to block but also help the reader identify recurring characters and backgrounds more readily as the story developed.

Large black quarter morocco clamshell box, gilt. 100 pp of typed documents and an additional 50 album leaves mounted with approximately 50 photographs (various sizes and processes), and various documents. Folio. "It is proposed that a COMPLETE ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS be opened to the public on a fifty cent admission basis, which is to be properly laid out as an attractive Zoological and Botanical Garden with the finest and largest private collection of animals, birds and reptiles to be seen anywhere on the continent..." The advent of the motion picture industry in California had many wide-ranging ramifications on the business world and one was that it created a new market for firms who traditionally supplied animals to circuses and zoos (both public and private, owned by the likes of William Randolph Hearst). This archive is a report by the Investment Auditors of California for the Horne Corporation that was looking to expand by establishing a zoological garden in the environs of Los Angeles. The Horne Corporation was the largest and most successful of its type at the time, apparently the only company in the US that could completely outfit a circus with both animals and show equipment. They were to purchase the Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio (for $250,000) and thereby sought to provide a similarly complete service to the film studios with both animals and suitable locations for film sets. The head of the company, I.S. Horne, for whom this report was compiled, commenced trading in animals from Kansas City (MO) around 1914. The range of animals at the their disposal included big game, birds, reptiles and many of the documents concern the prospect of importing reindeer from Alaska. The material is held in a presentation album and includes the certificate of incorporation in Wilmington, Delaware, May 13, 1929, as well as the by-laws of the corporation, minutes of the first meeting, the proposal for Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio and a balance sheet. At this stage the company had total assets of $57,700, & liabilities of $625,388.46; an enumeration of the various animals in inventory including wildebeest, sables, leopard, lynx, Rhodesian baboons, bushbaby, and a large aardvark. Of real interest are the plans for the park, including artist's impressions, which would be furnished with circus attractions, "Monkey Island", jungle setting for motion pictures, and an acknowledgment that "before the introduction of the motion picture industry, the art of showmanship was not quite so highly developed as it is today..." In fact, one of the first pictures they supplied animals for was - appropriately enough - Trader Horn, which was nominated for the 1931 Academy Award for Best Picture. On a more practical level, there is a "Descriptive Classification of Principal Commercial Wild Animals" which lists 340 different animals in some details. There is also an account of hunting wild animals in East Africa as well as a section on animals that have been trained to hunt by man. Furthermore there is also much correspondence which provides much insight into the game industry, its clients and the prospects for its future. Horne's venture subsequently became known as the World Jungle Compound, in Thousand Oaks, California, eventually being acquired by 20th Century Fox studios. This archive is a record of a new phase of the entertainment industry.

Das Blumenbuch (Volumes I - III)

[Mainzer Presse, 1929-1930], [Mainz, Germany] - The idea for this work came from a trip Rudolph Koch took in Germany with his young children to gather wildflowers; he drew them, and then enlisted the help of his friend Fritz Kredel to make woodcuts from his drawings (from A Century for the Century by Hutner and Kelly). "Fritz Kredel learned his trade as assistant to Rudolph Koch, in Offenbach during the 1920's; by the time he left Germany he was a celebrated illustrator. The woodcut and pen and ink were his preferred mediums, and one of his masterpieces -- in collaboration with Koch -- was 'Das Blumenbuch' (''The Flower Book'') of 1929-30, for which Kredel cut more than 250 color flower illustrations in wood. Woodcuts, he felt, had a crispness and sharpness that could not be achieved in any other medium" (from a NY Times review of Centennial Exhibit of Kredel's work). The woodcuts were then hand-colored by Emil Wollner. ***DESCRIPTION: All text in German; each volume contains hand-colored plates printed on the rectos only, with each page displaying one flower, some arranged by season ("From Winter to Early Spring" and so on) or locale ("In the Meadow", etc); Table of Contents at the rear, a total of 250 plates between the three volumes. Limited edition of 1000 copies, unnumbered (which followed a special edition of only 20 copies); 12" tall. ***CONDITION: All three volumes in near fine condition with light wear to the head of the spines, some rubbing to one corner, and a very light, stray mark on the front of Volumes I and III. Volume II has duplicate plate numbers 167-170 bound in, no plates missing. Lacking slipcases. ***CITATION: A Century for the Century no. 20. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
