        Signed Photograph

      - Signed vintage Walery sepia postcard photograph of the legendary entertainer shown in an elaborate feathered costume. 10 x 15 cm, several minor creases but boldly signed and dated Zurick [sic], 1929 and very striking indeed! Baker was most noted as a singer, while in her early career she was a celebrated dancer. She was given the nicknames the "Black Venus" or the "Black Pearl", as well as the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations, while in France she has always been known in the old theatrical tradition as "La Baker."

        Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Florence: Privately printed [Edward Titus], 1929., 1929. Second authorized edition: the Author's Unabridged Popular Edition. Octavo, pp.365. Bound in original brown paper wrappers printed in black, with Phoenix design to front cover, white label to spine, price "60Frs" to upper right and "LeCram Press-Paris" printed on back cover. One of 3000 copies printed; the novel was initially published in an edition of 1,000 copies by the Orioli Press, Florence (1928), and was almost immediately pirated by at least four different publishers. Lawrence had always intended to release a cheap version, and hoped that this official cheaper edition would discourage piracies. He struck a deal with Edward Titus and wrote a new introduction regarding the pirated printings entitled 'My Skirmish with Jolly Roger'. Fragile covers with some wear, a few tears to joints, some small chips to spine ends, title label intact, some edge-chipping. Overall a decent copy of this notoriously fragile book, seldom seen in such condition. Housed in a bespoke black morocco-spined clamshell box with felt lining. An uncommon survival.

First Printing. xxix, 197 pp. 8vo. Wear and scuffing to covers, bumping to corners, paper loss to each.         Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Paris: The Black Sun Press,, 1929. 2 volumes, quarto. Original cream-coloured wrappers, lettered in red & black on spines and front covers. With the glassine jackets and original silver slipcases. With 14 full page colour illustrations by Alastair (with glassine guards). Volume II slipcase split at head, slight discolouration around the spines of both volumes, light creasing in places, otherwise a very attractive set with the slipcases. First edition illustrated by Alastair; volume I is numbered 97 and volume II numbered 54 of 1,000 copies printed on Moirans paper. This is the wrappered issue, another version was issued in magenta cloth. Alastair was the pseudonym of the German-born writer and illustrator Hans Henning Voigt (1887-1969). "He was a self-taught artist and worked most of his life in Germany, interesting himself in decadence and transvestism. His black and white work is very sensuous and derivative of Beardsley, his colour illustrations have more the feel of the contemporary Russian school of ballet designers" (Houfe, The Dictionary of 19th Century British Book Illustrators, p. 335). The Black Sun Press was the private press of American expatriates Harry and Caresse Crosby and was one of the most exciting small presses of the 20s and 30s. Laclos's classic eighteenth-century erotic novel, written in epistolary form, was first published in 1782; the translation is Ernest Dowson's version of 1898.

The best of ancient and modern conjectural emendations are unobstrusively set in the margins for the benefit of a glancing eye. This is the finest of all editions of our greatet poet." (From "The Nonesuch Century," p. 69). This set is in superlative condition, protected all these years by the slipcases, which show only minor fingersoiling and occasional edgewear (but all panels are firmly intact). There is only a touch of variation in the niger morocco among the volumes, and light offsetting from turn-ins onto endpapers, both characteristics of which are always present to some degree.         ORIGINAL PEN-AND-INK PORTRAIT OF ALICE (From the 1929 Alice's Adventures In Wonderland Illustrated By Willy Pogány

New York, 1929. Willy Pogány (Hungarian/American, 1882-1955). ORIGINAL PEN-AND-INK PORTRAIT OF ALICE from his 1929 illustrated "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" published by E. P. Dutton. This important and exceedingly lovely piece of artwork served as the half-title illustration. Of the 60 or so original exuberant drawings accomplished by Pogány for this edition, this is certain one of the key images, serving as his best portrait of Alice as a short-haired 1920s "flapper." This small gem of an image is 3.5" x 3.5" situated in the center of a large sheet of 11" by 14" heavy art paper which bears Pogány's penciled notations. These notations are now covered by an acid-free art matte but we photographed it (see photo) so one can see how looked in toto prior to framing and glazing. Pogány has initialed the drawing at the lower left. The detail of the drawing is spectacular in comparison to the actual printed illustration (also see our photo of the published book image to compare). In Very Good to Fine condition, sharply inked. Many Alice collectors consider Pogany's whimsical interpretation of the Wonderland characters to be the first truly original interpretation since John Tenniel himself. The drawing currently resides inside a custom art nouveau style frame, matted to size, with the highest quality "museum" glass; however it can be sold and shipped unframed and a $500.00 discount credit is thus available. Provenance: Book Sail Catalogue #16 (1986). . Signed. Unbound. Very Good. Illus. by Willy Pogány.

THE TREASURY OF THE SIPHNEANS AT DELPHI Photographs by Clarence Kennedy Executed with the Assistance of the American School at Athens.

Northampton, Massachusetts: Smith College, 1929. Portfolio, approximately 20" x 12" (50 x 30 cm), containing 64 gelatin silver prints mounted on heavy board, preceded by a single folded leaf with the title page, a listing of the 64 plates, and a colophon that reads: "The plates were printed by Clarence Kennedy directly from the film negative, on Athena Paper, manufactured by the Eastman Kodak Company. The type was prepared at the Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Of this volume fifty-seven copies have been printed, of which this is number 17." This collection of 64 photographs was issued as Studies in the History and Criticism of Sculpture Volume IV, which was part of an eventual seven-volume series of photographic portfolios by Kennedy. This scholar-photographer (1892-1972) was appointed director of Smith College's division of graduate studies in Europe in 1925. This followed by only a few years his studies as a Charles Eliot Norton Fellow of Harvard University at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. According to the National Gallery, Kennedy mounted and assembled each edition himself, and issued each one in extremely limited numbers. The Siphnean Treasury in Delphi dates from approximately 530 BC; the phorographs are of its frieze. The photographs themselves are in fine condition; the collection is collated and complete. The title and contents leaf shows some light soil and handling creases. The portfolio, which is covered in deep blue cloth with front cover and spine paper title labels, has one internal 2"inch cloth break at the bottom of the front hinge, and the top cover is lightly speckled, possibly from paint. The tape ties are present. Many of the copies are owned by universities, and there do not seem to be any auction records extant. Additional photographs are available by request.
