THE SHORT STORIES OF H. G. WELLS ...

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.,. 1929. original dark blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, decorated endpapers.. Gold stamping on spine panel a bit dull, a clean, tight, very good. copy. A wonderful association copy. (#147712). First U.S. edition. A presentation copy with nice inscription by Wells on the title page: "To R. H. Winter / who was kind beyond words / to poor lost Odette Keun/ - such a timid woman / Gratefully, / H. G. Wells / [sketch of a string of camels with Odette running past a signpost labeled "To the Sudan," captioned "I want to go to the desert where there ain't no Wells"]. Below this Odette has written: "Now I ask you: is that like me? O.K." Accompanied by an holograph letter to Winter from Odette dated May 8, n.y., written on two postcards with photographic views of the villa, "Lou Pidou," which she and Wells built on the French Riviera. (One of these pictures is reproduced on page 408 of Smith.) Odette writes she is sending Winter "Pidoo's short stories as I don't know when his new book will be out ... and a short story of mine in French." She and Wells "are both here [at the villa] in incessant rain, & both writing, Pidoo a Great Fat book which is called the 'Science of Work & Wealth" ... and I an article on the Sudan ... such a unique colonial experiment that my professional conscience won't give me any rest until I say what I think about it ..." Odette Keun and Wells lived together for many years during the 1920s and 1930s. Their relationship ended badly -- Wells dumped her -- and subsequently Keun wrote some very mean things about him ("H. G. Wells - - The Player." TIME AND TIDE, October 1934). Wells caricatured her as "Dolores Wilbeck" in APROPOS OF DOLORES, a bitingly amusing novel published in 1938. For a good account of their tumultuous relationship, see Smith, pp. 408-15. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-179; (1987) 1-102; (1995) 1-102; and (2004) II-1231. Bleiler (1978), p. 205. Reginald 10067.         The Legion Book, an extraordinary copy of the limited issue of the first edition, finely bound and signed by 85 prominent contributing writers and artists and four prime ministers, three British and one French

London: Privately printed by The Curwen Press for H.R. H. The Prince of Wales, 1929. First edition, limited issue, signed. Leather-bound. This is the beautiful and rare limited, finely bound issue of the first edition, signed by 89 individuals comprising a stunning constellation of leading lights in British literature and arts, including all of the contributing writers and illustrators, as well as four prime ministers. The First World War is often eclipsed by the world-consuming conflagrations of the latter part of the twentieth century, notably the Second World War and Cold War. But it was the First World War that truly stunned civilization, ushering an age of inconceivable carnage and vast, industrialized brutality. When war came in August 1914, prevailing sentiment held that industrialized war would be decisive and short. “You will be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees,” Kaiser Wilhelm assured his troops leaving for the front in August. More than four extraordinary bloody years followed, lasting until the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. In his own history of the First World War, Winston Churchill wrote: “Overwhelming populations, unlimited resources, measureless sacrificeÂ… could not prevail for fifty months…” The British Empire alone suffered nearly 3.2 million casualties, including more than 900,000 dead and more than 2 million wounded. At the end of the First World War, the pension for a totally disabled man was only 30 shillings a week and no claim could be made seven years after discharge. In May 1921 several ex-servicemenÂ’s organizations were amalgamated to form the Royal British Legion. Thereafter, the Legion actively involved itself with the social issues of employment and pensions for both able and disabled ex-servicemen or their dependants. The Legion Book was commissioned by the LegionÂ’s patron, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and, after his abdication, the Duke of Windsor), with sale proceeds dedicated to the Legion. The 85 contributing artists were among the most talented British subjects in their fields, including Winston Churchill, Rudyard Kipling, P.G. Wodehouse, Aldous Huxley, Vita Sackville-West, G.K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Augustus John, Eric Kennington, and John Nash. The book was edited by James Humphrey Cotton Minchin (1894-1966), a First World War veteran of the Cameronians and the Royal Flying Corps. Trade editions ran to multiple printings, but there was also a 600 copy limited edition. 500 of these were signed by the editor, but “the first 100 were reserved for H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, sponsor of the volume, in his gift.” These hundred were simply magnificent - printed in red and black by The Curwen Press on larger, hand-made paper, profusely illustrated, beautifully bound in elaborately blind and gilt-tooled white pigskin, and signed by 89 luminaries. Massive volumes, they measure 13 x 10 x 2 inches and weigh 6.6 pounds. This is a magnificent, fine example of one of these hundred copies, rendered particularly special by being an unnumbered copy in exceptional condition, preserved in the original folding cloth clamshell box. All 85 contributing artists signed this copy. Four additional signatures are those of three British Prime Ministers – David Lloyd George, Stanley Baldwin, and Ramsay MacDonald – and French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau. The tally is five prime ministers if we count Churchill, who signed as a contributor, but would become prime minister himself in 1940. Signatures appear on seven different pages within. The binding is nearly flawless, with virtually no wear and only trivial hints of soiling, staining, and minimal handling. The contents are bright and clean, with trivial spotting confined to the endsheets. The limitation page bears no number; we have not encountered another copy thus. Superlative condition owes to the presence of the original felt-lined cloth clamshell case. The case shows modest scuffing and staining, and some spotting of the felt lining.         The Brook Kerith. A Syrian Story with twelve engravings by Stephen Gooden.

William Heinemann Ltd, London 1929 - First illustrated Edition. No.54 of 375 copies, signed by Moore and Gooden. 12 original copper engravings (nine full-page). Tall 8vo, original full vellum, gilt lettering on spine, untrimmed. Few dark spots on the vellum as usual, edges a little darkened, otherwise good. In 1913 the important Irish author George Moore (1852-1933) journeyed to Jerusalem to research background for his novel The Brook Kerith. This book is based on the supposition that a non-divine Christ did not die on the cross but was nursed back to health and eventually travelled to India to learn wisdom which obviously embroiled Moore in considerable controversy." Moore importance was huge. According to Richard Ellmann he heavily influenced Joyce and is often referred to as the first great modern Irish novelist.         LANCELOT 28º - 7º (GUIA INTEGRAL DE UNA ISLA ATLANTICA)

Madrid 1929 - Materia: Libro del siglo XX. Poesía. Canarias. ilustración. Modernismo. Ultraísmo. Surrealismo. Scarce Ward wrote of the works "I had earlier believed that every block should be conceived in the simplest terms possible, then cut with an absolute minimum of tool work. I had worked on the premise that every image should be developed only as far as was necessary to produce a comprehensible statement for that particular point in the visual sequence. Now, with those earlier miles behind me, it seemed reasonable to take a different approach to the actual cutting the blocks. In God's Man, except for the use of round and flat gravers to remove the white areas, all the rendering of figures and landscapes had been done with a single line tool. I Madman's Drum, by contrast, I sought to develop a wider range of tool work and utilized small round gravers to break up a large dark area with small jabs of the tool, thus achieving a variety both of tonal effect and textural quality. At the same time, I put more emphasis on decorative patterns in such things as dress material and the walls of interiors, which I hoped would not only result in richer and more varied impact from block to block but also help the reader identify recurring characters and backgrounds more readily as the story developed.

        THE BISHOP MURDER CASE.

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. - First edition. Presentation inscription by the author on the front fly leaf, "To Mr. John V. Cravins Jr., who would be without this copy of THE BISHOP MURDER CASE if Philo Vance had really switched the fatal wine glasses. Blood is thicker than water. S. S. Van Dine 2/21/29." Van Dine has also added the inked comment, "See page 334." On page 334 he has edited the text in ink at two places.Cloth is moderately soiled, lightly foxed, an old, small water stain is visible along the bottom margin of the first 25 pages, but not affecting the text, else a good copy in dust jacket, with light wear to the spine ends, and corners. The murders start with the body of Robin who is found with an arrow through the heart. A note found dealing with the murder was part of a nursery rhyme and signed by 'Bishop'. The only witness may have been Mrs. Drukker and Adolph, but they are not talking. As the murders progress, each one is accompanied by a nursery rhyme. It is up to Philo Vance to unravel the clues and unmask the identity of the murderer known as 'Bishop.'
