        Kreisa Fronte / Kreis? fronte. N. 2. 1. V. 1929. [Left Front. No. 2. May 1, 1929.]

Linards Laicens (Latvju Kultura), Riga 1929 - With several photographic illustrations and reproductions. First edition. Printed in 1200 copies. In publisher"s, constructivist cover. Printed in red and black. 47, (1) p. "Kreis? fronte" was the first substantial leftist Latvian-language journal with international aspirations. Its concept and format followed Vladimir Mayakovsky's magazine the "LEF" and the design of "Novy Lef". Only 17 issues were published between 1928 and 1930 (the last one was double), when it was banned by the authorities, and Laicens launched his new magazine the "Trib?ne". The content of "Kreis? fronte" was more cultural than political, contained avant-garde literary elements as well as photographic artwork. The editor, Linards (Petrovich) Laicens (1883-1938) was a Latvian Expressionist writer and poet, active in politics as a member of Communist party. He was the editor or the leftist Avant-garde journals "Kreis? Fronte" and "Trib?ne". [Fraser: pp. 125-126.]. Two pages damaged at edges with no effect on legibility. Cover and brochure artistically restored. In fine condition. In publisher"s, constructivist cover. Printed in red and black [Attributes: First Edition]

The Colophon, subtitled A Book Collectors' Quarterly or A quarterly for booklovers, was a limited edition quarterly periodical begun late in 1929 and continuing in various guises until 1950. It was the brainchild of Elmer Adler, founder of Pynson Printers of New York City. Each issue would also include an original piece of graphic art, some signed by the artist, many produced by using etching, lithography, or engraving. The articles comment on a current or historical issue related to printing, publishing or art. Other articles were themselves intended to be an example of printing or a work of art. As each article or item was normally a short section produced by a different designer and printer, a typical issue included a range of styles, papers, and typography, often using unusual or experimental approaches not widely seen in longer or mainstream printed items. Printed catalogue description of the autograph letter signed mounted to vol. 1 front free endpaper verso. Very lightly sunned on spines, lower outer corners of vols. 4 and 37 very lightly bumped. A superb set. Limited edition of 300 sets, this set with an autograph letter from Charles Dickens to actress Fanny Kelly mounted to the initial blank of the first volume, dated 13 May 1857, headed with his return address of Devonshire Terrace and signed with his characteristic Dickensian flourish. The letter reads, "My dear Miss Kelly, I have read your letter to the Duke at your request, and I think it (as I could hardly fail to do) full of a natural grace and propriety, and marked by real feeling. I will give it him today. On the other side is the passport with Mrs Dickens' kind regards. Always faithfully yours, Charles Dickens". After retiring from the stage in 1835 Kelly established a flourishing training school for young actresses, and with the patronage of the Duke of Devonshire set up a model theatre at the back of her house on Dean Street, Soho in 1839. After a brief initial hiatus, "Kelly reopened the theatre, which was used by the first amateur company in the United Kingdom—the Amateurs, of which Dickens was a leading light—to produce Everyman before a very distinguished audience. The next production, on 3 January 1846, was a benefit for her by the same company, for which Dickens wrote a prologue to be spoken by her. However, despite an appeal to the duke of Devonshire which resulted in a £200 loan, she soon fell into debt when the theatre was, she was assured illegally, seized by the landlord. She lost £16,000 on the venture" (ODNB). Devonshire and Dickens both continued to support her after the venture failed and she was forced to move to Bayswater and then Feltham, Middlesex. Her obituary in the Times described her as "The last survivor of a great school of actresses". The Chapman and Hall Dickens also includes The Life of Charles Dickens in two volumes by John Forster. A fine library set, with an excellent autograph letter evoking Dickens's often overlooked dramatic interests.

        Art Forms in Nature

London: A. Zwemmer,, 1929. Examples From the Plant World Photographed Direct From Nature. With an introduction by Karl Nierendorf. Quarto. Original green cloth, decoration and titles to front board and spine gilt. With the photographic dust jacket. 120 full page photogravures by Blossfeldt. Faint foxing to endpapers and edge of text block, plates unaffected. An excellent copy in the lightly foxed jacket with some nicks and short closed tears to extremities. First edition, first impression, UK issue with the new preliminaries. A masterpiece of nature photography and one of the greatest and most influential photographic books ever to have been published. Blossfeldt (1865-1932) is "recognised for his extensive and unique collection of photographic plant portraits that reveal the tactile qualities, intricate forms, and uncanny aspects of flora. His fusion of scientific observation, sculptural form and surreal composition pioneered an artistic style that forged new approaches to modern art and photography" (Whitechapel Gallery). The artist was by training a botanist—his use of extreme close-up technique in photographing plants began as part of his study. "Over three decades, Blossfeldt produced 6,000 photographs, using a homemade camera and lens that could magnify a subject by 30 times, to capture the microcosmic aesthetic of his specimens. In 1928, the first of three ground-breaking portfolios was published under the over-arching title Urformen der Kunst (Artforms in Nature). It became an overnight sensation; Blossfeldt was celebrated for discovering a hitherto 'unknown universe' and for his exemplary technical feats as a photographer. The philosopher Walter Benjamin declared that Karl Blossfeldt 'has played his part in that great examination of the inventory of perception, which will have an unforeseeable effect on our conception of the world'" (Southbank Centre).
