[ Paris: Ad. Braun & Co., 1929. Untitled lithograph. Image size 12 x 9 1/2" (30.48 x 24.1cm), with full margins. Fine, in lightly smudged archival matting. One of an edition of 250 impressions printed on Montval, signed in the plate, and in pencil in the lower right margin. Lovet- Lorski (Lithuanian/American 1894-1973), was a major contributor to the American Art Deco style of the 1920's. Although best known as a sculptor, in 1929 Braun & Co. published two portfolios of his lithographs, of which this lithograph was a component. The image is of a male figure in foreground struggling with a horse against a mountainous landscape. In the background a nude female figure stretches her arms overhead as the sun rises (or sets) behind her, and the sea goes from placid to sweeping waves. Late in life, after arthritis hampered his ability to sculpt, Lovet-Lorski returned to drawing and print-making. His work is held in the collections of the Luxembourg Museum, Paris; Petit Palais, Paris; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; San Diego Fine Arts Society; Los Angeles Museum of Art; Seattle Art Museum; San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; Boston University; and Columbia University.

The Mind Reader: A Mystery (First Edition)

New York: Macaulay, 1929. First Edition. First Edition. Publisher's black cloth with titles and front board illustration in yellow. The second of three crime novels by this noted African-American crime author originally from Jamaica. Supernatural elements, including spiritualism, seances, and astrology present as well. An uncommon and important title in early genre fiction by African-American authors. Frankie Y. Bailey notes: "In 1932, Rudolph Fisher published a mystery novel set in Harlem. [However, ] ... Fisher was not the first black man to write a mystery novel. A journalist named Walter Adolphe Roberts had preceded him by several years. [In Roberts' second book,] ... "The Mind Reader," Daniel Buwalda (white and blonde) sets out to to control the world with the help of a beautiful and malleable Armenian woman whose husband he has destroyed. Buwalda is a psychic, and the hero and his older and smarter brother, both of whom are conversant in the occult, must confront him. The confrontation takes place in a building where there are two black janitors who are easily overpowered and confined in a closet with the building manager. Some brief soil to a few pages, small splits to the cloth at the joints professionally mended. Overall a bright, Very Good plus copy. Hubin p. 688, Reginald 12283. Bleiler (1978), p. 168.         Good-Bye to All That

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1929. An Autobiography. Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles to spine gilt, publisher's device to rear board. With the Len Lye-designed dust jacket. Monochrome portrait frontispiece of Graves, 7 plates and maps. Bookplate and ownership inscription to front pastedown. Spine slightly rolled, an excellent, bright copy in the unclipped jacket with toned spine, that has some nicks to extremities and 4 cm closed tear to foot of spine panel. First edition, first impression, the rare first issue, with the infamous Sassoon poem extant (pp. 341-43), page 290 in its original state, and without the erratum slip. The story of the suppression of this issue is well recorded. The book printed a poem Sassoon had written to Graves in letter form. Sassoon was horrified and demanded the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages. This was done and a second issue produced with asterisks marking where the passages had been. Ironically these honest, fearful and touching lines are some of the best Sassoon ever wrote. As for Graves - of all the thousands of books written about the Great War none has achieved the lasting fame of this brilliant account written by a major author at the height of his powers. Connolly included the book in his list of 100 key books of the Modern Movement noting the peculiar genius of an author to transform autobiography into art.

La Novella Del Buon Vecchio E Della Bella Fanciulla

Very rare first Italian edition of Italo Svevo's story of an old man's sexual obsession with a young woman with introduction by Eugenio Montale. The noted Italian Modernist, Italo Svevo (b. Ettore Schmitz in Trieste, 1861) was unknown in Italy until his encounter with James Joyce in Trieste in 1907 and later recognition in France by Valery Larbaud and Benjamin Crémieux. This novella-published the year after Svevo's death in an automobile accident-is an account of an older man's attraction to a younger woman. The volume also includes Madre (1910), Vino Generoso (1926), Una burla riuscita (1926), Il Vecchione (1928). The English translation entitled The Nice Old Man and the Pretty Girls and Other Stories was commissioned and published by Virginia Woolf for her Hogarth Press. 12mo. Tight copy in very good condition. Uncut after p.129, slight soiling and rubbing on front and back covers, nicks on edge at p.149, faint water stains on top right edge (p.145-316).

Signed in pencil on the mat at right immediately under the image "Muray" and dated "1929" by the photographer. There are a few spots of abrasion to the emulsion along the top with a couple of spots at the top right corner of the image. A beautiful portrait housed in the photographer's light gray cardboard folder with his pictorial device above his name on the folder's front cover. The Hungarian-born conductor Frederick Martin "Fritz" Reiner (1888-1963) was highly regarded for his performances of Opera and symphonic music. Born in Budapest to a secular Jewish family he studied the piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy. Among his teachers was the young composer Bela Bartok. For a time, he worked closely with Richard Strauss before moving to the USA in 1922 to take over as condutor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Taking citizenship in his new country, he taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Both Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss where among his students. His appointment as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 marked the pinnacle of his career which included landmark recordings.Like Fritz Reiner, the photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) was born in Hungary. He was a student of lithography, photoengraving and photography. Having fled Europe at the advent of the first World War, he settled in Brooklyn where he found work as a color printer. Opening a studio in Greenwich Village in 1920, he was soon commisioned by Harper's Bazaar to do a portrait of the Broadway actor Florence Reed. Harper's Bazaar were apparently happy with his work as they were soon publishing his photographs on a near monthly basis. As his reputation grew, New York City's elite and celebrities sought him out to have the portraits taken and in 1926, Vanity Fair sent him to Europe to photograph celebrities in London, Paris and Berlin and, in 1929 hired him to photograph Hollywood movie stars. Moving away from his earlier work, Muray turned to commercial photography becoming famous for his work in color advertising. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Works of Shakespeare. The text of the first Folio with Quarto variants and a selection of modern readings: edited by Herbert Farejon.

London The Nonesuch Press -1933 1929 - 7 volumes, 8vo, number 693 of a limited edition of 1,600 copies; publisher's pigskin, gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, with original cardboard slip-cases that are little rubbed and bumped in preserving an exceptionally fine set with none of the usual variances in spine tones, gentle off-setting to edges of endpapers (as usual) otherwise a superb set. 'Produced as the finest looking Shakespeare edition in England', according to Francis Meynell, the founder of Nonesuch Press. Mentioned in Dreyfus as a success, with superb typographical plans that gave the design of the unillustrated pages a sparkle that suited the choice of type. According to Francis Meynell, was one of the first successful examples of the Nonesuch Press in applying modern methods of production to the uses of fine book printing. "We turn over to the Nonesuch Shakespeare. There you have created a most marvellous pleasure. I have handled it ever so many times, and read The Tempest right through. It satisfies. It is final, like the Kelmscott Chaucer or the Ashendene Virgil. And it is a book which charms one to read slowly, an art which is almost gone from us in these times. Every word which Shakespeare uses stands out glowing. A really great edition. The tact and grace of your editor have been surpassing. I think I like the size and shape and binding almost as much as the text. The paper, too, is just right. Altogether a triumph. One of the best things is that it can be done again. Nobody will ever dare to produce the old type of edition now, while your text stands there to reproach them. It means a permanent improvement in Shakespeares" (T.E. Lawrence letter to David Garnett, quoted in The Nonesuch Century, p. 47). The History of the Nonesuch Press, Dreyfus. cat. 58. p.208. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Original Book Illustration Art.

This noted Montana-born children's book author and illustrator is remembered for "The Runaway Sardine" (her first book, 1929) and 35 others, most published by Knopf: "The Greedy Goat," "Drusilla," "The Topsy-Turvy Family," "Mr. Wren's House" and others. Offered here is the near-complete original ink and watercolor artwork for an early title illustrated but not authored by Brock: Louise F. Encking's translation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic "The Nutcracker and the Mouse=King," published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago in 1930, when Brock was just starting out and hungry for work. Consists of 25 slightly translucent leaves (each two sheets either stapled or tipped together at top), approximately 13" X 17", 14 containing a large single black ink line drawings (six signed by Brock at lower margin) and the remainder mostly containing two small drawings per sheet. All 25 have an overlay sheet on top of the ink drawings bearing the hand colored elements. Below each ink drawing Brock pens a caption (which often differs from the caption that appears in the published book). Very good overall. Minor occasional soiling (most about edges) and edgewear. Bold and handsome illustrations for almost the entire book, some with pencilled editor's notes in the margins, including one or two illustrations omitted from the published book. Front cover art is absent, present only in the form of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph used for production purposes. The simple rear dust jacket art is present on a 12½" X 16½" heavy card stock board as well, along with an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white production photograph of same. A fabulous and quite scarce archive that shows the creative process at work.

        Winter. A Poem.

Oxford: University Press,, 1929. Folio, 16 pp. Original marbled paper wrappers, paper label on front cover, stitched as issued. Spine worn otherwise a good clean copy. Limited edition of 350 copies, a facsimile of the first edition of 1726. Signed on the front free endpaper by Edmund Blunden and carrying an 8-line autograph poem in Blunden's careful hand (dated 13 January 1930): "Sicilian roselight, Siegfried, fills your hours, / And yet your heart returns to northern farms / Where the brown stacks drip sleet, and under cowers / The wanderer; flood and tempest have such charms? / And true it is, these taloned branches weave / A bower for you that you will never leave, / These nights of sounding firmamental strife / Are the kind ministrants of your far-conscious life". The poem would appear to be unpublished. Blunden and Sassoon were lifelong friends and this book may well have been given as a parting gift, for early in 1930 Sassoon was advised, for health reasons, to stay in Sicily because of its milder climate.

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929., 1929. First edition. Presentation inscription by the author on the front fly leaf, "To Mr. John V. Cravins Jr., who would be without this copy of THE BISHOP MURDER CASE if Philo Vance had really switched the fatal wine glasses. Blood is thicker than water. S. S. Van Dine 2/21/29." Van Dine has also added the inked comment, "See page 334." On page 334 he has edited the text in ink at two places.Cloth is moderately soiled, lightly foxed, an old, small water stain is visible along the bottom margin of the first 25 pages, but not affecting the text, else a good copy in dust jacket, with light wear to the spine ends, and corners. The murders start with the body of Robin who is found with an arrow through the heart. A note found dealing with the murder was part of a nursery rhyme and signed by 'Bishop'. The only witness may have been Mrs. Drukker and Adolph, but they are not talking. As the murders progress, each one is accompanied by a nursery rhyme. It is up to Philo Vance to unravel the clues and unmask the identity of the murderer known as 'Bishop.'

        Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Florence: Privately printed [Edward Titus], 1929., 1929. Second authorized edition: the Author's Unabridged Popular Edition. Octavo, pp.365. Bound in original brown paper wrappers printed in black, with Phoenix design to front cover, white label to spine, price "60Frs" to upper right and "LeCram Press-Paris" printed on back cover. One of 3000 copies printed; the novel was initially published in an edition of 1,000 copies by the Orioli Press, Florence (1928), and was almost immediately pirated by at least four different publishers. Lawrence had always intended to release a cheap version, and hoped that this official cheaper edition would discourage piracies. He struck a deal with Edward Titus and wrote a new introduction regarding the pirated printings entitled 'My Skirmish with Jolly Roger'. Fragile covers with some wear, a few tears to joints, some small chips to spine ends, title label intact, some edge-chipping. Overall a decent copy of this notoriously fragile book, seldom seen in such condition. Housed in a bespoke black morocco-spined clamshell box with felt lining. An uncommon survival.
