The Blacker the Berry: A Novel of Negro Life

New York: Macaulay Company, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. Very good minus. 262pp. Octavo [19.5 cm] Brown cloth with the title stamped in black on the front board and backstrip, and a small black ink stamped figure on the front cover. Publisher's brown top stain. There are multiple small moisture stains on the front cover, the spine is prominently rolled, the spine ends are moderately bumped and rubbed. Thurman's first published novel offers a frank portrayal of prejudice within the black community, and was divisive among the public and critics alike. Thurman was already fairly well known within the "Harlem Renaissance," but the publication of this work would announce his talents to a wider audience, and would help to cement his reputation as a writer who would take on unpopular (and sometimes uncomfortable) subjects.

The Middle Parts of Fortune: Somme and Ancre, 1916.

London: The Piazza Press, issued to subscribers by Peter Davies, 1929.. LIMITED FIRST EDITION. In Two Volumes. Octavo. pp. viii, 226 [4]; 227-453. No. 167 of 520 copies printed on handmade paper. Bound in brown cloth lettered and ruled in gilt to back-strip, with marbled endpapers and top edge gilt. Largely unopened, with fragments of the original glassine jacket with paper flaps (all flaps present), housed in the publisher's burgundy slip-case with thumbhole access. Books are very fine, case with some light rubbing and one bump to corner. This is the original text of the novel which became widely known as 'Her Privates We' when published under that title the following year; various 'prunings and excisions' were made to the trade edition as the bluntness of language was thought to make the book unfit for public distribution. T.E. Lawrence commented "No praise could be too sheer for this book".

Shortly Before his Self-imposed Exile from Germany, Albert Einstein Supports an International Language to Promote Peace and Understanding

1929 - Typed Document Signed, Berlin, Germany, December 18, 1929. 1 p., 8-1/4 x 11-1/4 in. In German, with Einstein's autograph accomplishments. File holes at left margin, light soiling toward top margin, else fine. "I am willing to join the federation for the introduction of an international auxiliary language to promote understanding, peace, and cooperation among nations." Einstein was a lifelong champion of efforts to eliminate of the nationalist divisions that leaders erected between peoples, often to deadly effect. Esperanto, the "international auxiliary language," was an easy to learn, politically neutral language invented by L.L. Zamenhof, a Polish ophthalmologist, in the 1870s-1880s. His goals, to transcend nationalism and create harmony and peace in the world community, were certainly shared by Einstein - and pilloried as a Jewish conspiracy by Adolf Hitler. Considering the date of the pledge, Einstein was taking an early stand against the Fascist future into which Europe was about to descend. Translation:"Federation for the introduction of an international auxiliary language to promote understanding, peace and cooperation among peoples,"I am willing to join the federation for the introduction of an international auxiliary language to promote understanding, peace, and cooperation among nations." Transcript of German:"Bund für die Einführung einer internationalen Hilfssprache zur Förderung der Verständigung, des Friedens und der Zusammenarbeit unter den Völkern.""Hierdurch erkläre ich mich bereit, dem Ehrenauswchuss des Bundes für die Einführung einer internationalen Hilfssprache zur Förderung der Verständigung, des Friedens unter Zusammenarbeit unter den Völkern Beizutreten."Albert Einstein(1879-1955) was a German-Swiss born theoretical physicist internationally recognized as one of the greatest physicists of all time. He enunciated the general theory of Relativity, with law explaining the relationship between the speed of light and its consequence, the equivalence of mass and energy (E=MC2). For his work in theoretical physics-largely for his 1905 paper on photons and photo-electricity-Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics (announced in November 1922, retroactive for 1921). Working on a unified field theory, he then attempted to explain gravitation and electromagnetism within one set of laws. With the expulsion of Jewish scholars from Germany after Hitler's rise to power, Einstein joined the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey (1933), which became the most celebrated research center in the world. In 1939, he signed a letter written to President Franklin Roosevelt warning him of the possibility of Germany developing a nuclear bomb. He urged the U.S. to begin uranium research, thus beginning the top secret "Manhattan Project." Later, at Princeton, he tried to develop a unified field theory and to refute the accepted interpretation of quantum physics, both unsuccessfully. Einstein received U.S. citizenship in 1940.

[RUSSIAN COLLECTION OF NATIVE AMERICAN OBJECTS] Otdel Severnoi Ameriki: Putevoditel' po Muzeyu antropologii i etnografii [i.e. North America Department. Guide to Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography]

Leningrad: Izd-vo Akad. nauk SSSR, 1929. 102, [10] pp.: ill., 1 map. 20х14 cm. In original publisher's wrappers. Some browning of the wrappers, chipped crown, closed tear of the front cover and tears of the lower spine and extremities. Otherwise a very good clean copy. 1 of 1500 copies. First edition. Introduction of the book gives a short characteristic of North America, e.g. origin of aborigines, their languages, culture, economy, clothing, weapons, religion and ceremonies, secret societies, sacrifices, tattoos, social life of American indians, games, calendars etc. Also introduction includes a classification of North American aborigines of nine groups. The most fully represented of these groups in the museum are north-west indigenous people (Tlingits), aborigines of Central California, the Aleut people and Eskimos.  The guide consists of twelve parts, almost each of them is dedicated to a group of indigenous people. There are Subarctic or Canadian Native Americans, Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest, Natives of California and Oregon, South-West and South-East Native Americans, Plains Indians, Forest Indians, Western, Central, Greenland, Polar Eskimos and Aleuts. Each department includes descriptions of all objects and their place in the museum. The main part of the guide is followed by Index of the tribes and Subject index. Illustrations represent different Native Americans and their looks. Ethnographical map gives an idea about borders of their cultural areas.  American department of Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (of Russian Academy of Sciences) was created in the beginning of the 20th century. It was headed by professor Leo Shternberg (1861-1927; the guide was compiled by his widow Sarra Shternberg). Collection on American natives was started in the first half of 18th century but the most active replenishment of the collection has begun in the second half with the start of Russian exploration and colonization of Alaska and Aleutian islands.  WorldCat locates two copies in Denmark and one in Harvard, USA.

        The Roman Hat Mystery.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes,, 1929. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to upper board and spine in black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Ownership inscription to front pastedown but a superb copy in the dust jacket. First edition, first printing of the authors' first book. Of all the first books by American golden age crime writers (Stout, Carr, Gardner, Chandler, Hammett, etc.), this has been, in common experience, the scarcest. We have handled just one other copy in a slightly defective dust jacket. This example is the best we know. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.

Voyage au Congo, suivi du Retour du Tchad et illustré de soixante-quatre photographies inédites de Marc Allégret.

Gallimard 1929 - ONE OF 1,571 COPIES on Vélin d'Arches paper, this copy unnumbered but likely one of the 50 given over to the author for presentation, small photograph to title-page, 4 full-page maps printed in red and black, running headers in red, photographic plates throughout, pp. 305, 4to, original wrappers barely attached to the textblock (loose aside from final quarter) and heavily frayed and chipped overall, fair. An important presentation copy of this travel narrative, inscribed by the author on the half-title to the English translator of this and many other of his works: 'À mes amis Simon et Dorothy Bussy. André Gide'. Dorothy Bussy, née Strachey, was among the thirteen children of Sir Richard and Jane Strachey, and the sister therefore of Lytton, James, Oliver, etc.; a large part of her education was in France and she married the French painter Simon Bussy - she was, like her siblings, connected to the Bloomsbury Group (her only novel, 'Olivia', was published anonymously by the Hogarth Press in 1949), but her most important friendship was with Gide, whom she first met in 1918. She came to be not only one of his closest friends, but his chief translator into English (her translation of this work, as 'Travels in the Congo', appeared in 1930). The work itself recounts a journey undertaken in the company of the photographer, Gide's partner at the time, in 1925 - its anachronistic use of the term 'Congo' (it was by then a part of French Equatorial Africa) was an intentional statement that imaginative geography was as important to the author as physical; the work is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Conrad, whose vision of the region in works such as 'Heart of Darkness' formed the foundation of Gide's own. As an exercise in ethnography, its approach is idiosyncratic - but it is a monumental work, with the photography of Allégret making a major contribution to its effect. Allégret's documentary film of the expedition launched his career in that medium. Though the copy is a poor one, the association is difficult to improve upon (particularly given the posthumous nature of the dedication).

The Spirit of Solitude, An Autohagiography Subsequently re-Antichristened The Confessions of Aleister Crowley (2 Volumes)

London: The Mandrake Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 Volumes. Hardcover. Quarto. Bound in white buckram with Crowley?s stylized self portrait and titles in black to front of both volumes. Gilt titles, volume numbers, and phallic seven-pointed star design to spines. Issued without dust jackets. Bevelled edges. Top edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. 284, 307 pages. Errata slip present at end of volume two. Illustrated with full-page black and white photographs plus several diagrams. NOTE: This set once belonged to eccentric inn-keeper John Fothergill (author of An Inn-Keeper?s Diary, 1938, and owner of the Spread Eagle in Thame). There is a small, short phrase in Fothergill?s hand in ink to the lower front board of volume two which reads: ?This latmiographito. Oh, you naughty man!? Laid in is a hand written and signed letter by Fothergill?s grandson (also named John Fothergill). The letter reads as follows: ?The two volumes of Crowley?s memoirs were given by the author to my grandfather and namesake, John Fothergill, the author and innkeeper, who knew Crowley as a visitor to the Spread Eagle in Thame in the 1920s. His note on the front cover of one of the volumes was prompted by the way the letter ?A? has been formed.? Reference is to Crowley?s well-known phallic ?A? which he used often as part of his signature. This is the first edition of Crowley?s Confessions in two volumes. Crowley?s desire was that this work be published in six total volumes but due to various financial factors and the eventual demise of The Mandrake Press, the project had to be halted. In 1969 John Symonds and Kenneth Grant were able to edit and issue a single volume edition of Confessions which included much from the four unpublished volumes. A fair amount of text and several photographs from these first two volumes were not included in the later editions, much of this material was related to Crowley?s mountaineering and travel adventures and is available nowhere else. There is still plenty on magick within these pages. It is unclear at this time as to whether the John Fothergill who wrote the accompanying letter is, or is in any way related to, the John Fothergill who was a founding member of the band Nurse With Wound. There is light rubbing to both volumes and a few marks to buckram on spines and to cover of volume two. Spines are just slightly yellowed (much less than often found). A tiny amount of foxing and some age toning to preliminaries and inner edges. Bindings are tight and secure. Overall this is quite an attractive set in very good or better condition.

        Brigadier-General R.B. Bradford, V.C., M.C. and his Brothers.

[London printed, but Durham: For the family,] 1929 - Octavo. Original blue ribbed cloth on bevelled boards, title gilt to the spine, and to the upper board together with the crest of the Durham Light Infantry. Very slightly rubbed at the extremities, spine a touch sunned, else a very good copy. Triple-fold photogravure frontispiece, printed in sepia, facsimile signatures. First edition, one of just 50 copies printed on japon. No copy on COPAC, no copy in BL, not in IWM, a single copy (Calgary) on OCLC. The four Bradford brothers were the sons of a Durham colliery owner. Three were killed in the war; two won the VC, the only brothers to do so; and the third won the MC. The survivor Thomas Bradford was awarded the DSO for his services with the 8th Bn. DLI. This copy inscribed by Thomas and by Major Welch, one of the compilers: "To George Hunter, To whom that part of the book which deals with Roland Bradford owes so much." Loosely inserted two-page letter from Welch to Hunter: "The book owes more to you than to anybody else, and in sending you a copy I wish to express to you again my warm thanks for the difficult work you did in bringing it into being." Hunter has added a page of pencilled notes on his involvement in the writing of the book, and on the delays that attended its final publication. Loosely inserted news-clipping about Sir Thomas (as he later became) Bradford's retirement as a magistrate in Durham in 1961 at the age of 75; he died in 1966. A nicely provenanced copy of a desperately uncommon book. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
