      Privately Printed by Eugene V. Connett, 3d, at the Derrydale Press, [New York 1929 - Models for Connett's edition of 21 copies with hand colored plates. Comprising 35 [of 68] engraved plates, proofs after letters, after the original paintings by Stubbs, Herring, Hall, Sartorius, and others, colored by hand, most marked "Approved WW" in ink or pencil in margins, with occasional notes to the colorists. 1 vols. 7 x 10 inches. Colorists' Models for the rare colored issue of 'Cherished Portraits'. "This was Connett's first major work in fine book production. It was contracted through Ernest Gee, and Mr. Woodward spared no expense ?" (Siegel, p. 52). The idea had come to Mr. Woodward, whose Belair Stables bred some of the greatest racehorses of the 1920s and 1930s, to do a book about the portraits he owned after listening to Mr. Vosburgh regale him with stories about them one Sunday afternoon. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior, racing scenes, and other works. "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. ? It was Connett's most amibitious project, and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" (Siegel, p. 174).Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years, and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book. Ten Years Republic in Pictures. Rare publication with malevolent, mostly full page caricatures with captions inciting and documenting the increasing anti-Semitism during the Weimar Republic. Fully illustrated throughout. Each page with one or more b/w caricatures and captions. Kunze (1872-1945), also known as Bludgeon-Kunze (Knüppel-Kunze), published this collection of anti-Semitic caricature in 1929, the same year he joined the NSDAP and dissolved the DtSP (Deutschsoziale Partei) which he had founded in 1921. From 1930 on Kunze was active as the Reichs-Speaker (Reichsredner) for the NSDAP. From 1932 to 1933 he was a representative for the Nazi Party in the Prussian State Parliament and after that in the German National Parliament (Reichstag). On the occasion of his 70th birthday he was honored in the Nazi press for his anti-Semitic propaganda. "Im Neuen Deutschland" was included in the list of banned publications in the Soviet occupied zone after W.W.II.Text in German. Wraps with light wear along edges, small chips and tears, lightly sunned along bottom and foredge with some small stains on cover. Front cover partly loosened from staples. Sligth diagonal fold in upper right corner throughout. Small stamp on title. Occasional small closed tears at foredge in block with one page showing three inch closed tear at foredge. José Bardasano Baos was a Spanish painter who worked as an illustrator for various Spanish newspapers and magazines, including El Socialista, a weekly newspaper published by the PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español). In 1929, he was named artistic director of the Rex advertising agency. During the war he founded and directed the Gallofa workshop, an extension of the Juventudes Socialistas Unificadas, and became well-known as a propaganda and poster artist. After the war he moved with his family to Mexico, where he helped to found the Círculo de Bellas Artes de México. As of August 2016, WorldCat locates four holdings in North America.

Georges Mogin est né en 1898 à Bruxelles. A partir de 1923, il choisit l'écriture sous le nom d'abord de Géo Norge puis Norge. Il fonde en 1931 le Journal des Poètes puis en 1937 les Cahiers blancs. En 1983 il reçoit un hommage à la Maison de la Poésie à Paris. Il est mort en 1990. Très belle reliure demi veau gris perle à bande signée Lobstein-Laurenchet. Dos lisse aux titre et auteur dorés. Vollständige Ausgabe in aufwendigem Handeinband der Zeit (rotbraunes Maroquin-Ganzleder / GLdr gr.8vo im Format 16 x 23,5 cm) mit Rückentitel in Goldprägung und goldgeprägter Liniendekoration des gesamten Einbands, Kopfgoldschnitt, Steh- und Innenkantenvergoldung der Deckel, handgestochenem Kopfband und Lederhäubchen, 276 Seiten. - \"Warum handgebunden? - Die wesentlichsten Vorzüge des guten Handbandes sind: Die einzelnen Druckbögen werden mit der Hand nach dem Schriftspiegel gefalzt. Die Bogenränder werden dadurch zwar ungleich, aber das Satzbild steht gerade. Um infolge der ungleichen Ränder ein späteres zu starkes Beschneiden mit der Maschine zu vermeiden, werden die Bogen einzeln, vorne und unten, mit der Pappschere auf ein Mittelmaß rauh beschnitten. Dadurch wird der Druckrand weitestgehend geschont. Als erste und letzte Lage wird dem Buche zum Schutze eine leere Papierlage hinzugefügt, welche mit einem feinen Leinen- oder echten Japanpapierfalz versehen ist. Geheftet wird der Handband nach sorgfältiger Auswahl des Heftzwirnes auf echten erhabenen oder aufgedrehten flachen Bünden und auf Pergamentriemchen (welche beim Pergamentbande durch den Rücken gezogen werden). Oben wird das Buch beschnitten und erhält nicht nur der Schönheit willen Goldschnitt, sondern diese feine Metallschicht schützt vielmehr die dem Lichte und Staub am meisten ausgesetzte Schnittfläche vor deren schädlichen Einflüssen. Die Deckel werden in einem tiefen Falz angesetzt, mit den Bünden nach außen. Ein Herausreißen aus der Decke ist somit nur unter Zuhilfenahme von Werkzeug möglich. Zum Kapital wird kein schlappes maschinengewebtes Bändchen verwendet, sondern das Kapital wird von Hand mit dem Buchblock umstochen, gibt dadurch dem Rücken einen festen Abschluß und bietet zugleich dem späteren Ledereinschlag (\"Häubchen\") die Unterlage. Als Einbandmaterial kommen sumachgares, lichtechtes Saffian, Kalbleder, vereinzelt auch Rindsleder, ferner naturelles und weißes Schweinsleder sowie Kalbspergament zur Verwendung. Ein mit der Hand hergestelltes, dazupassendes Überzugpapier sowie Handvergoldung oder Blinddruck am Rücken ergänzen das Werk nach außen.         The World Crisis: The Aftermath, 1918-1928, review copy of the first U.S. edition

      Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1929 - This is a jacketed publisher’s review copy of the first edition, first printing of the fifth book of The World Crisis, Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War. Jacketed first editions are quite scarce. This copy would be notable for condition alone – near fine in a very good dust jacket. What makes this copy exceptional is discovery of the original publisher’s review slip laid in at the front pastedown. The 5 x 3.25 inch review slip is printed dark brown on ivory stock in eight lines below a decorative device: "TO THE LITERARY EDITOR | We take pleasure in presenting this book for editorial | use with the request that in notices or reviews attention | be called to the price. A clipping of such notices or | reviews will be greatly appreciated by | Charles Scribner’s Sons | 597 Fifth Avenue, New York" A "Date of Publication" line is left blank but in the "Price" line is hand-written "5.00". This is the first review copy of this volume we have encountered. Any prospective collector will hopefully forgive the intended reviewer for the fact that this copy apparently went unread. The russet cloth binding remains square and tight with perfect, unfaded color and vivid gilt, consonant with its protection beneath an original dust jacket. We note only slight wrinkling at the spine head, a few small bumps to the upper and lower edges of the rear cover, and light wear to the corners. The contents retain a crisp feel with no spotting. The page edges show only modest age-toning and light dust soiling to the top edge. The sole previous ownership mark is an inked gift inscription on the front free endpaper dated "1929". The dust jacket is substantially complete and retains the original $5.00 front flap price. We note minor chipping to the spine ends and corners and a 2.5 inch closed tear to the upper rear hinge. The jacket faces are clean. The spine shows moderate, uniform toning and faint moisture staining to the upper spine at the title. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. This fifth volume of The World Crisis deals with the postwar years 1918 to 1928. Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual books between 1923 and 1931. Today, jacketed first editions are quite scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so than their British counterparts. Private Photosammlung des Schiffsstewards Hermann Muller, der zwischen den 1930er und 1960er Jahren - der Hochzeit der Luxusschiffahrt - auf den Passagierdampfern der Reederei United States Lines im Bordservice gearbeitet hatte und bis zum Chefsteward aufgestiegen war. - Die aus einer Postschiffahrtsgesellschaft hervorgegangene amerikanische Reederei United States Lines betrieb von 1929 bis 1969 eine Transatlantiklinie (New York-Bremerhaven und New York-London) für Luxus-Passagierdampfer, die tlw. mit ehemals deutschen, als Reparationszahlungen übernommenen Passagierschiffen (America, George Washington), später mit eigens für die Reederei gebauten Dampfern befahren wurde. Der berühmteste Dampfer des Unternehmens war die United States, das Flaggschiff der Reederei, die auf ihrer Jungfernfahrt 1952 (unter Kapitan H. Manning) das "Blaue Band" errungen hatte. Sie hält bis heute den Rekord für die schnellste Atlantikquerung eines Passagierschiffes in östlicher Richtung. - Hermann Muller fuhr unter anderem auf den Schiffen America, President Roosevelt, Leviathan, Manhattan, Washington und eben auch der United States. Als Chefsteward hatte er die Verantwortung für Küche, Vorratshaltung und Reinigung des Schiffs. Mullers große Umsicht und Einsatzbereitschaft für das persönliche Wohl der teils prominenten Passagiere sowie ein offensichtlich sympathisches Wesen machten ihn zum ersten Ansprechpartner und beliebten Mitglied der Bordcrew, wie zahlreiche herzliche und persönliche Widmungen auf den Photographien wie "Wishing you as always a Happy sailing thru life" bezeugen. Die Photographien (Formate zwischen 7 und 12 und 20 und 26 cm) stammen überwiegend von den Bordphotographen der Linie oder von privat und zeigen neben den Passagieren auch die Crew und das Küchenpersonal, Banketts, Silvester- und Geburtstagsfeiern, Bordhochzeiten, Seebestattung, seltene Details oder auch Gesamtaufnahmen der Passagierdampfer; daneben finden sich auch Familienphotos aus dem Privatleben von H. My meetings and appointments with various officials from the People's Commissariat for Foreign Trade as well as myself make a huge impression. I even imagined myself the lying stone under which no water flows, and when this stone rose the water began to swirl and to bubble. But by now, everything is set up. And everything seems to be quite well now, but let us see. The People's Commissariat for Foreign Trade promptly sent a note to the Leningrad porcelain factory telling them to enter negotiations with me at once, also to the Silicate Trest and the Wallpaper Trest etc. What with all this bustle, Suyetin and I will have so much to do that I can't tell how we shall stand it. It has already come so far that Exports is going to send me on a business trip abroad. Today (Wednesday) I'm giving my lecture to the assistants, all of Thursday I will spend with Unochka, and on Friday I'm going to buy the ticket, though I do not know for which day they'll give me one. To the Frederick Henry Walton Foundation, City of Buenos Aires, confirming an agreement with his correspondent on the terms he is prepared to work with the Foundation; re refers to a course of 10 lectures on architecture and urbanism he has just given and to the reputation he acquired in the past two weeks, explaining the aim of the Foundation was to transform the architecture of Buenos Aires to be known as "Les grands Travaux de Buenos Aires - architecture and urbanism" and to be directed by the architect Antonio Vilar to promote an era of revolutionary town planning. - Le Corbusier attached a coloured sketch to his letter to illustrate his plan clearly; it outlines advanced technical an dfinancial possibilities for modernizing the surrounding suburbs, with references to plans for an airport, railways, underground trains, sewers and to a program for constructing magnificent skyscrapers. Stating he is certain that the development of Buenos Aires would one day be comparable to New York; he points out that his stay is limited to a few days, and he hopes his suggestions are of interest; asks his correspondent to maintain frequent and speedy contact to allow him to carry out the necessary decisions. - Le Corbusier's visit to Buenos Aires in 1929 was financed by the Asosiación Amigos del Arte, La Faculdad de sciencias exatactas y la Asosiacion, and Amigos de la Ciudad at the suggestion of his host, the intellectual socialite, Victoria Ocampo. He gave ten lectures to the local cultural elite later published as "Précisions sur un état présent de l'architecture et de l'urbanisation". - The letter on stationery of the Majestic Hotel in Buenos Aires; his drawing with small tears in foldings, and somehwat spotty.

In general, they all behave well to me. My beloved Natalja, don't let yourself get bored, don't get upset, don't lose weight.       Éditions de la Montagne, Paris 1929 - French edition of excerpts from Stein's The Making of Americans, translated and with a preface by Georges Hugnet and signed and inscribed on the half-title by Hugnet to the Romanian and French avant-garde poet Tristan Tzara. 8to. Softcover. 122 pp. From an edition of 302 copies, this copy not numbered. A fine uncut copy, inscribed to Tristan Tzara by Hugnet (translated from the French): "To my dear Tristan Tzara on behalf of Gertrude, this little book excerpted from a very big one, with all my best, Georges Hugnet, St Malo, June 1929." Also included are three copies of an order form for the book. Light toning to the covers, some slight dents to the edges and very small losses to the spine. One of the first books published by Éditions de la Montagne, which had been founded the same year by Hugnet. Although attributed to Hugnet, the translation was actually made by Virgil Thomson and Stein herself. The edition was the first publication of one of Stein's works in translation. From the collection of Myrtille Hugnet, acquired upon the sale of Tristan Tzara's collection.Georges Hugnet, French poet and critic, was born in Paris in 1906. A man of many talents, he dabbled in a variety of artistic pursuits including poetry, editing, publishing, translating, film and play writing, acting, rare book collecting, and book binding design throughout his life. His many artistic friends included Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray, and Jean Cocteau. With financial backing from his father, a furniture manufacturer, Hugnet established the publishing company Les Editions de la Montagne with the intent of publishing his own works and the work of his close friends including Tristan Tzara, Pierre de Massot, and Gertrude Stein. It was Virgil Thomson who introduced Gertrude Stein and Hugnet in 1926. Stein and Hugnet had a short-lived but intense relationship, lasting until 1930.

Ich sehe keine vernünftige Hoffnung mehr - bleibt das Wunder welches auch schließlich auch immer noch sich als vertrauenswürdig erwiesen hat zum Ende.
