Autograph Quotation signed ("Benghabrit"). In French, signatures in French and Arabic. Paris., 22. V. 1929.

1929. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Si Kaddour Benghabrit to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "Rebellion sleeps in the heart of man, may he be cursed who awakens it'. Thus spoke our Prophet. This is still the living doctrine of modern Islam. How could it not prefer the pure and simple joys of peace to the torments and dark nights of war! [Signed] Benghabrit". Si Khaddour Benghabrit rose to prominence under the French regime in Morocco . He is also remebered for his courage in saving the lives of the many Jews during the Second World War by disguising them as Muslim members of his Paris mosque - somewhere between 500 and 1600 people were saved from deportation in this way, and the Medal of Justice has been awarded to the descendants of Benghabrit by the Yad Vashem Memorial. Pax Mundi. Livre d'or de la paix. Enquete universelle de la Ligue mondiale pour la paix sous le haut patronage de son comite d'honneur avec l'approbation de la Societe des nations, du Bureau international du travail et de la Cour permanente de justice internationale. Geneve, Societe paxunis, 1932.

The Black Camel: A Charlie Chan Mystery

312 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with red lettering to spine and cover in original jacket.Inscribed on second front end-paper. First edition in second state jacket.Earl Derr Biggers is remembered primarily for his novels, especially those featuring the fictional Chinese American detective Charlie Chan, from which popular films were made in the United States and China. Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio, and graduated from Harvard University in 1907. He worked as a journalist for The Plain Dealer before turning to fiction. His novel Seven Keys to Baldpate was popular in 1913, and George M. Cohan quickly adapted the novel as a hit Broadway stage play of the same name. Cohan starred in the 1917 film version, one of seven film versions of the play, and a 1935 revival. More than 10 years after Baldpate, Derr Biggers had even greater success with his series of Charlie Chan detective novels. The popularity of Charlie Chan extended even to China, where audiences in Shanghai appreciated the Hollywood films. Chinese companies made films starring this fictional character. Derr Biggers publicly acknowledged the real-life detective Chang Apana as the inspiration for the character of Charlie Chan in his letter to the Honolulu Advertiser of June 28, 1932.The Black Camel (1929) is the fourth of the Charlie Chan novels by Earl Derr Biggers. It tells the story of a Hollywood star (Shelah Fane), who is stopping in Hawaii after she finished shooting a film on location in Tahiti. She is murdered in the pavilion of her rental house in Waikiki during her stay. The story behind her murder is linked with the three-year-old murder of another Hollywood actor and also connected with an enigmatic psychic named Tarneverro. Chan, in his position as a detective with the Honolulu Police Department, "investigates amid public clamor demanding that the murderer be found and punished immediately. "Death is a black camel that kneels unbidden at every gate. Tonight black camel has knelt here", Chan tells the suspects. It was adapted into a film of the same name based on the book and released in 1931. This was the second of a series of sixteen Chan films to feature Warner Oland as the sleuth.Condition:Points gently rubbed, spine slightly darkened, previous owner's name on half title, inscribed on second front end paper. Jacket spine head chipped with a quarter inch loss, edge wear with some chips and closed tears, spine sunned, hinges and fold over edges rubbed, price clipped, corners chipped else a very good copy in about a good to very good jacket.

        The Mystery Of The Papyrus

Methuen & Company (1929), London - Original green cloth, lettered in blue on the front panel and the spine. 8vo. Eight page publishers catalog at rear. 246pp. In the complete and exceedingly rare dust jacket. The front panel of the jacket is bright and in good condition. The spine is faded with text in blue maintained quite well while other shades have faded by 75%. There are stains and nicks on the spine. From the Methuen Clue Stories series. Listed in Hubin, Bleiler and Penzler's volume on Bibliomysteries. Almost certainly a first edition. What gives me pause is the 3/6 price on the spine of the jacket. A bibliomystery in that the plot hinges on a papyrus secreted out of Egypt written in three languages - two known languages, one not. Rosetta Stone anyone? Then there is murder and a missing papyrus and a pursuit. There are "Lost Race" aspects to the novel as well. Now housed in a custom drop-back box. From the Lawrence Solomon collection.         Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses, from the Collection of William Woodward. Colorists' Models]

Privately Printed by Eugene V. Connett, 3d, at the Derrydale Press, [New York 1929 - Models for Connett's edition of 21 copies with hand colored plates. Comprising 35 [of 68] engraved plates, proofs after letters, after the original paintings by Stubbs, Herring, Hall, Sartorius, and others, colored by hand, most marked "Approved WW" in ink or pencil in margins, with occasional notes to the colorists. 1 vols. 7 x 10 inches. Colorists' Models for the rare colored issue of 'Cherished Portraits'. "This was Connett's first major work in fine book production. It was contracted through Ernest Gee, and Mr. Woodward spared no expense ?" (Siegel, p. 52). The idea had come to Mr. Woodward, whose Belair Stables bred some of the greatest racehorses of the 1920s and 1930s, to do a book about the portraits he owned after listening to Mr. Vosburgh regale him with stories about them one Sunday afternoon. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior, racing scenes, and other works. "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. ? It was Connett's most amibitious project, and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" (Siegel, p. 174).Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years, and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book. For published book: Podeschi 373; Siegel 22; Frazier V-4-D; Decade p. 67. Provenance: Eugene V. Connett, 3d; Don Frazier Loose sheets. Custom red half morocco clamshell box Comprising 35 [of 68] engraved plates, proofs after letters, after the original paintings by Stubbs, Herring, Hall, Sartorius, and others, colored by hand, most marked "Approved WW" in ink or pencil in margins, with occasional notes to the colorists. 1 vols. 7 x 10 inches Models for Connett's edition of 21 copies with hand colored plates.
