NY: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929. First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good Minus. Lynd Ward. 8vo. A novel in woodcuts, with 144 powerful and evocative images, drawn by Lynd Ward after his year-long apprenticeship in Graphic Arts, and exposure to German expressionist art in Leipzig, Germany. Moderate rubbing and shelf-wear to extremities with cardboard peeking out from lower right corner. Front hinge just started between copyright and dedication pages. Binding very solid. Fraying to top 1/8 inch of spine. Association copy inscribed on half-title page, to Will H. Solle and signed by Ward. Solle was a well-known bookman who, to preserve his health, declaring himself done with the book business once and for all, then famously abandoned his big-city job in Chicago as Vice President of Kroch's Books, and retired to the touristy village of Omena, in Northern Michigan. Soon however, he opened a shop out of his home there which became one of the most popular destinations in North America for serious bibliophiles. Ward's GODS' MAN was the first American wordless novel, which he created after being inspired by European wordless works by Frans Masereel and Otto Nuckel. The book was issued a week before the Great Crash of 1929 and became a bestseller. Essentially a Faustian tale, the 144 (one-per page) darkly striking woodcut images tell the tale of a young artist who receives an enchanted paintbrush from a mysterious stranger, which brings him fame and success, in return for some unspecified exchange. Later the stranger comes to collect, and verily, he does.

Identity, Variables, and Impredicative Definitions" in The Journal of Symbolic Logic, Vol. 21, No. 3, Sept. 1956, pp. 225-245 AND "Vicious Circle Principle and the Paradoxes" in The Journal of Symbolic Logic, Vol. 22, No. 3, Sept. 1957, pp. 245-249

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS, two papers (in two separate issues), of Jaako Hintikka's systematic investigation of Wittgensteinian predicate logic (W-logic), the first ever performed. Jaakko Hintikka (1929-2015) was a Finnish philosopher known for his work in logic and epistemology. He was awarded the Rolf Schook Prize in Logic & Philosophy in 2005, "widely viewed as the Nobel of its field. He is also one of only four philosophers this century to be the subject of a volume of the Library of Living Philosophers" (The Philosophers' Magazine 40, 2008, 44). "Hintikka's development of systems of modal logic, the logic of knowledge, and game-theoretic semantics was inspired in part by the Tractatus, and in part by Wittgenstein's notion of a language game" (Shapiro, Oxford Handbook, 114). In the Tractatus, Wittgenstein wrote: 'Identity of the object I express by identity of the sign and not by means of a sign of identity. Difference of the objects by difference of the signs.' Wittgenstein, however, only proposed the problem; he did not posit the answer. The two Hintikka papers offered here amplify Wittgenstein's elimination of identity (as enunciated in the Tractatus) by constructing a logic without identity. "Hintikka distinguishes the usual 'inclusive' reading of the variables (i.e. we are allowed to assign the same object to distinct variables) from the 'exclusive' reading, and then proves [his] key theorem: "[E]verything expressible in terms of the inclusive quantifiers and identity may also be expressed by means of the weakly exclusive quantifiers without using a special symbol for identity" (Logic Matters Portal; Hintikka 1956). CONDITION & DETAILS: Two issues in original paper wraps. [No place]: The Association for Symbolic Logic. Quarto. (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). Volume 21, Number 3, September 1956: Slight creasing (see photo). Bright and clean inside and out. Very good condition. Volume 21, Number 3, September 1957: Near fine condition. Bright and clean inside and out.

Geneseo, Illinois: Privately printed by the author, 1929., 1929. First edition. First edition. 7 3/4" x 3 5/8" stiff, salmon colored wrappers with decoration and titles printed in black, 35 [1] pp., frontispiece (picture of Martin Hornecker), publisher's note. Eberstadt, Texas 162:400: â??Vivid narrative of two yearsâ?? experiences in west Texas and on the edge of the Staked Plains.â? Howes H645. Tate, Indians of Texas 3138: â??Good straightforward description of hunters working out of Ft. Griffin during the heyday of the hide trade.â? Hornecker (born 1852, Baden, South Germany) and his family emigrated to Illinois when â??even Illinois was still known as â??the westâ?? to all who lived east of the Hoosier state and to them, Texas was beyond the pale of civilization. Little did Hornecker and [his companion Ed] Stewart dream when they left Colona township that they would spend nearly two years hunting buffalo, 200 miles beyond the government outposts, where the Indians roved in great numbers and did what they pleased and where there was nothing to do but die if a rattler or a centipede got you. Martin Hornecker is one of the few men now living, belonging to that vanguard of hardy courageous men who faced the rigors of a life on the wild, open plains of the West to prepare it for the approach of civilization, and helped to decimate the uncountable herd of buffalo to make way for the cattle men and their droves of cattle. Just as it was necessary for the Indians to move toward the setting sun as the white man moved westward, so the buffalo had to be driven from the plains to make room for the white manâ??s cattle.â? The author and his buddy had planned to get a job as â??cow punchersâ? on one of the big cattle ranches in Texas, having heard they paid big wages, but the ranches were much farther west. They walked 120 miles in four days and discovered that the ranchers wanted only men with experience and under 130 pounds. Working in a stone quarry in 90-degree weather quickly inspired them to return to Ft. Worth and take up buffalo hunting. While buffalo hunting on the Staked Plains with his powerful single-shot forty-five caliber Creedmore breech loaders, Hornecker learned of a cattleman named Tasker who started a cattle ranch in the area and learned that the cattle and buffalo could not graze on the same ranch because the buffalo always stampeded the cattle and trampled them to death. Horneckerâ??s reaction to Texas includes: â??We thought Ft. Worth, when we first saw it, was the worst city in the United States, but its wildness was no comparison to that of Ft. Griffin.â? Of the ladies of Ft. Griffin, Hornecker opines: â??The women looked hard and were even harder than they looked.â? Fine, bright, unused copy of an item considered rare today.

Original Book Contract for "Our Government," signed by Cain and Knopf

N.p., N.p. 1929 - Purchase, Rights, and Royalties agreement between James M. Cain and Alfred A. Knopf for Cain's first book, Our Government. SIGNED by both Cain and Knopf, with numerous hand corrections and initials by both parties, the most notable being a notation by Knopf on the first page that the contract was voided by way of a letter from Knopf in 1933. On the last page, there is a typed notation that says, Canceled by Mutual Consent and dated July 1949. Overall, it would appear that the contract was held in place from the time of the book's publication in 1929 through 1933, at which time it was superseded by a new one. The author's copy of his first book contract, one of probably 3-4 copies that have ever existed, preceded only by Cain's magazine and newspaper appearances, most notably in Mencken's "American Mercury." Near Fine in an attractive, pre-folded, six-page contract document with a black ribbon tie, as issued. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

A custom full-tan cloth folding box (with charming repeating blue-rabbit endpapers) has been fabricated for the sheets. This is a lovely edition of Psalms, and a great San Francisco fine press item.         The Fairy Caravan.

[Ambleside: for the Author,], 1929. Large octavo. Original grey green boards with dark green cloth spine, titles to front board in black, all edges untrimmed. Housed in a blue velvet-lined solander box. 6 colour and numerous monochrome illustrations in the text by the author. Spine ends rubbed, front hinge split but holding, some spotting to first few leaves. First edition, UK issue, number 26 of 100 copies only. Presentation copy, inscribed by Potter on the front free endpaper, "To Mr & Mrs Wright of Graythwaite - in affectionate remembrance - from Beatrix Heelis. June. 10th 1930." A touching presentation copy, together with an autograph letter from Potter to the Wrights laid-in, consoling them on the loss of Mollie, their daughter, and writing that she had had it in mind to bring a copy of the book over for her: "I hope time is softening the pain of parting and that you can take comfort in thinking of her safe from the storms and cold of this earthly pilgrimage." She writes of her plans to visit soon, and notes an amusing anecdote of Mrs Wright's father ("I was taken aback when I joked about Mount Everest and he said he had been there!"). Several years later this copy made a serendipitous journey: it was mistakenly sold by Mrs Wright to a Kendal bookseller, resold to a bookseller in Hertford, and finally purchased by Leslie Linder. In a letter laid-in from Linder to Mrs Wright, he returns the book to its rightful owner, and asks in return not for payment but for any memories Mrs Wright might have of Potter. There is no record of Mrs Wright's reply, but Linder's response to her note also accompanies the book, enclosing a photograph of the Heelises on the porch at Hill Top Farm, taken around the time Jemima Puddle-Duck was published, and thanking her "for the account of Mrs Heelis ... I know from experience that notes like these are not written in five minutes.

        The Fairy Caravan.

[Ambleside: for the Author,] 1929 - Large octavo. Original grey green boards with dark green cloth spine, titles to front board in black, all edges untrimmed. Housed in a blue velvet-lined solander box. Spine ends rubbed, front hinge split but holding, some spotting to first few leaves. 6 colour and numerous monochrome illustrations in the text by the author. There is no record of Mrs Wright's reply, but Linder's response to her note also accompanies the book, enclosing a photograph of the Heelises on the porch at Hill Top Farm, taken around the time Jemima Puddle-Duck was published, and thanking her "for the account of Mrs Heelis . I know from experience that notes like these are not written in five minutes." Linder p. 431; Quinby 29. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Martha. Radierung.

Signiert "Hubbuch". Kräftiger Druck auf Velin. Papier: 40,9 x 31 cm. Nicht bei Vierneisen. Söhn HDO 72720-1. Eines von 125 Exemplaren. Blatt 1 aus: Die Schaffenden, VI. Jahrgang, 2. Mappe, 1929.

Scrapbook-photograph album documenting a cross-country trip from Brooklyn to San Francisco on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle

Transcontinental United States 1929 - This 11" x 7.5" album contains 88 pages packed with over 80 photographs (2.75" x 2") plus postcards, his bill-of-sale, driver's permits, tickets, original art, souvenir stickers, telegrams, and other ephemera. The album and contents are in very nice shape. Baker, the grandson of artist-illustrator Peter Newell who funded the Newell collection at Yale University, purchased his Harley-Davidson motorcycle from the Koch-Ruhle dealership in the summer of 1928 and used it to travel cross-country to San Francisco via St. Louis, the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, San Diego, and Los Angeles. While in California, Baker toured National Parks, visited museums and tourist sights, and attended concerts. He eventually sold his motorcycle and booked passage on the S. S. Charles R. McCormick from San Francisco to return to New York. Highlights include * The bill of sale showing Baker paid $252 for his motorcycle; * Baker's New York motorcycle operator's license; * Many photographs of Baker on the Harley; * Baker's American Motorcycle Association membership card; * A pocket flap, presumable from a heavy shirt or light jacket worn on the journey; * A map of St. Louis prepared by the "49th State Touring Club" with Baker's route from Eads Bridge to U.S. Highway 40 outlined in green; * Permits to operate the motorcycle in the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and General Grant National Parks; * Several colorful Shell Gasoline tourist stickers; * Bakers' California Agriculture certificate and non-resident driver's license; * An Automobile Club map of San Diego with Baker's route through the city outlined in red; * Photographs on board the McCormick and an original watercolor of Baker's cabin. Albums documenting cross-country automobile trips from the 1920s are scarce. Comprehensive photo-scrapbooks in excellent condition documenting 1920s transcontinental motorcycle trips from New York City to San Francisco with return by steamship are simply non-existent.
