[SOVIET CRITICS OF USA IN 1930] Sovremennaya Amerika [i.e. Modern America]

Leningrad: Krasnaya gazeta, 1929. 100 pp.: ill. 17х13 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Restoration of the spine, previous owner's ink stamp on the title page, margin of p.65 is cut off (the text is not affected). Cover design by Georgy Fitingof (1905-1975), Soviet artist and illustrator well known for his work in children's and adventure literature. He worked many times with famous Russian magazine Vokrug sveta [i.e. Around the World]. This edition brings together some of the facts about contemporary United States of America. USA is often referred as the Empire of the Dollar in the book. The general tone of the book is unapproving, especially concerning worker's class and USA-USSR relationship. In 1920s the images of the United States produced in the Soviet Union often strongly criticized the American social and economic system, yet underlying these hostilities was an admiration for American industrial achievement and an aspiration to model Soviet advancements on, and then surpass, those of the West. The book is supplied with the illustrations of union rallies, unemployment and workers queuing for the food.

GODS' MAN: A NOVEL IN WOODCUTS (SIGNED)

Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, NY 1929 - 8vo. A novel in woodcuts, with 144 powerful and evocative images, drawn by Lynd Ward after his year-long apprenticeship in Graphic Arts, and exposure to German expressionist art in Leipzig, Germany.Moderate rubbing and shelf-wear to extremities with cardboard peeking out from lower right corner. Front hinge just started between copyright and dedication pages. Binding very solid. Fraying to top 1/8 inch of spine. Association copy inscribed on half-title page, to Will H. Solle and signed by Ward. Solle was a well-known bookman who, to preserve his health, declaring himself done with the book business once and for all, then famously abandoned his big-city job in Chicago as Vice President of Kroch's Books, and retired to the touristy village of Omena, in Northern Michigan. Soon however, he opened a shop out of his home there which became one of the most popular destinations in North America for serious bibliophiles. Ward's GODS' MAN was the first American wordless novel, which he created after being inspired by European wordless works by Frans Masereel and Otto Nuckel. The book was issued a week before the Great Crash of 1929 and became a bestseller. Essentially a Faustian tale, the 144 (one-per page) darkly striking woodcut images tell the tale of a young artist who receives an enchanted paintbrush from a mysterious stranger, which brings him fame and success, in return for some unspecified exchange. Later the stranger comes to collect, and verily, he does. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A BRIGHT COLOR PORTRAIT OF THE FRENCH STATESMAN WHO LED THE NATION IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR, SIGNED BY GEORGES CLEMENCEAU.

Paris, November, 1929.. 1929.. Fair. - A 7-1/2 inch high by 4-7/8 inch wide color portrait of Georges Clemenceau mounted into an 11 inch high by 7-1/8 inch wide mat. The portrait depicts the French Prime Minister from the shoulders up, a period hat above his heavy white eyebrows and mustache. Signed "Clemenceau" in ink on the mat below the image. The portrait, mounted with glue from the verso, is scratched, heavily creased, and subsequently waxed to protect it. The crude mat's backing is stained and the keyhole mat itself is cracked at the bottom and top edges.
An autograph letter accompanying the signed portrait attests that Clemenceau signed the portrait on his deathbed. The letter, dated November 29, 1929, reads as follows: "Monsieur, Monsieur Clemenceau ayant signe cette photographie que vous lui avez envoyee la veille de sa mort, je me fais le devoir de vous l'envoyer. Bien respectueusement...." Clemenceau died 5 days earlier, on November 24th. This letter has been folded for mailing.
The leader of the Radical Party, Georges Clemenceau played a central role during France's Third Republic, serving as it's Prime Minister from 1906 to 1909 and subsequently leading the nation in the First World War. He again served as his nation's Prime Minister from 1917 to 1920. One of the principal architects of the Treaty of Versailles, he pushed for the restitution of Alsace-Lorraine to France.
Provenance: From the autograph collection of Seymour Halpern.
The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.

GODS' MAN: A NOVEL IN WOODCUTS (SIGNED)

NY: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929. First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good Minus. Lynd Ward. 8vo. A novel in woodcuts, with 144 powerful and evocative images, drawn by Lynd Ward after his year-long apprenticeship in Graphic Arts, and exposure to German expressionist art in Leipzig, Germany. Moderate rubbing and shelf-wear to extremities with cardboard peeking out from lower right corner.
