        Team First

Appleton, 1929 A very rare 1929 first edition in dust jacket, of this important work of baseball fiction. There is no copy of this book listed for sale on ABE, with or without a dust jacket. An expert estimates that Appleton published less than 1,000 copies of each of these titles, which would account for its rarity. This copy is in fine condition, in a very good dust jacket which still has the original price of $1.75 on the front flap. A few small pieces of tape on the inside of the jacket but not visible on the outside. Silvers also wrote the Dick Arnold series and was dean of men at Rutgers. Comes in a custom-made collector's slipcase.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good.

        The Black Dudley Murder

The Crime Club, New York 1929 - A lovely copy of this scarce and early Allingham title. Original black cloth, lettered and decorated in red on the front panel and the spine. The bright and complete dust jacket is by PIC. The jacket is not price clipped and the $2.00 original price is very clear. Next to this price is a stamped 50 which I take to be some kind of remaindered price. Allingham's third mystery novel and the first to feature Albert Campion. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. ... It was Connett's most amibitious project, and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" (Siegel, p. 174).Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years, and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book. It was contracted through Ernest Gee, and Mr. Woodward spared no expense …" (Siegel, p. 52). The idea had come to Mr. Woodward, whose Belair Stables bred some of the greatest racehorses of the 1920s and 1930s, to do a book about the portraits he owned after listening to Mr. Vosburgh regale him with stories about them one Sunday afternoon. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior, racing scenes, and other works. "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. … It was Connett's most amibitious project, and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" (Siegel, p. 174). Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years, and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book. For published book: Podeschi 373; Siegel 22; Frazier V-4-D; Decade p. 67. Provenance: Eugene V. Connett, 3d; Don Frazier

Journey’s End (Scarce True First Printing)

The true First UK printing published by Gollancz in 1929. The Wraps Book is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Binding is tight. The covers are mildly soiled and toned. Spine intact but two small closed tears to the upper spine folds. End papers and prelims spotted with mild spotting to the page edges in places throughout. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Sherriff's good fortune with the phenomenal success of what is essentially a mediocre play depended in large part on the appearance in the intital production of the work - by the Incorporated Stage Society in a two-day run at the Apollo Theatre in December 1928 - of the 21-year old Lawrence Olivier (directed by the equally unknown James Whale). The production transferred to The Savoy Theatre for a three-week run in January 1929 and thence to The Prince of Wales where it ran for two years, during which time it was also produced by 14 other companies in the Anglophone world and in 17 other languages across the world. Hollywood beckoned . . . The luck also rubbed off on Victor Gollancz, for whom the text was a first major publishing coup, selling 175,000 copies. Self-wraps mention a cloth issue of which it appears there was no such. A very scarce title to find with such attributes. The Trade hardback edition was not to be published until the following year. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.
