        The Thirteenth Guest

Whitman Publishing Co. Racine, Wisconsin (1929) - First Edition. Extremely scarce second (and last) mystery by the author Scarface (his other 1929 novel, depicting the rise of gangster Al Capone, which was adapted into the 1932 film Scarface directed by Howard Hawks and produced by Howard Hughes). The Thirteenth guest served as the basis for a 1932 American Pre-Code mystery comedy thriller film, also known as Lady Beware in the United Kingdom. The novel was again brought to the silver in screen in 1943 as Mystery of the 13th Guest. Marie Morgan has been lured to an old abandoned house by a false note from a friend, and is in jeopardy although she doesn't yet realize it. As she sits at the table inside, she thinks back to the banquet held there 13 years earlier, when she was a little girl. Only 12 of 13 guests had attended, and the manor's owner, the Morgan family patriarch, who was then dying, has since passed on. The chance to claim the bulk of the estate fortune has resulted in an ongoing campaign of murder by someone targeting the original 12 guests, whose dead bodies are being left at the table in the same seats they had occupied originally. Very Good, lower half of rear cover discolored from dampstain, in Very Good dustjacket, shallow chipping at spine ends, flap corners, and at front flap edge, modest soiling to panels.         Jean Harlow, nude at Griffith Park (Three original photographs, circa 1929 )

N.p.: N.p., 1929. Three vintage photographs of Jean Harlow posing nude in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, by noted photographer Edwin Bower Hesser. Hesser began his photography career working as a studio still photographer, but soon transitioned into portrait photography and artistic nudes. He published his work, and those of others, in his magazine "Edwin Bower Hesser's Arts Monthly Pictorial," one of several magazines of the era that skirted censorship laws by appealing to the artistic nature of the nude photography. Based partially in Los Angeles, Hesser's main contribution to the form was the use of natural, outdoor settings, rather than sterile indoor studios, for his photographs, with Griffith Park being a particular favorite. That and his frequent use of aspiring starlets as models are exemplified in by his photographs of Jean Harlow, taken a year before "Hell's Angles" (1930) launched her from unknown to the heights of Hollywood stardom. Perhaps the most famous photo shoot of Hesser's career, the photographs were reproduced frequently, sold under the counter as postcards and in magazines, though MGM did its best to obfuscate Harlow's identity as the model. The photos served as an inspiration to Marilyn Monroe, and were of enough lasting interest for "Playboy" to republish three of them (different images from the ones offered here) in the article "The History of Sex in Cinema" in the April, 1966 issue, which is included with the sale of the photographs. Photographs roughly 3.5 x 5 inches (9 x 13 cm). Slightly but evenly toned. Near Fine. "Playboy" magazine: Wrappers lightly soiled, Near Fine.

Emergency Decree concerning 1929 Riots in Palestine

1929 - (JUDAICA""PALESTINE) CHANCELLOR, Sir John Herbert (High Commissioner for Palestine). Minshar ["Manifesto"""Emergency Decree of the British High Commissioner Concerning the 1929 Riots]. Jerusalem: Press of the Greek Monastery, September 4, 1929. Broadside (measures 17 by 20 inches), printed on recto. Framed. $5500.Emergency decree in Hebrew issued by the British High Commissioner for Palestine announcing special power to be given to the Courts in conducting trials for those arrested for violent conduct in the 1929 riots in Palestine. On August 23, 1929, following a ten-month build-up of tension over the disputed rights of Jews to pray at the Western Wall, an Arab mob attempted to attack Jews in Jerusalem. The outbreak of violence spread to other parts of the country and on the following day, Arabs murdered some 70 Jews in Hebron. In the week of bloody violence that ensued, there were attacks in Tel Aviv, Haifa and 18 Jews were killed by an Arab mob in Safed. Before the week had passed, large detachments of British troops were brought in, arresting numerous Jews and Arabs, and finally restoring order to the country. In the disturbances 133 Jews were killed and 339 wounded, mainly in Jerusalem and Hebron; Arab casualties, chiefly from police action, were 116 killed and 232 wounded. In this Emergency Decree, the British High Commissioner for Palestine, Sir John Herbert Chancellor, announced that special powers were to be given to the Courts in conducting the trials of those arrested, the aim being to ensure a fair trial and to determine whether the attacks were spontaneous or premeditated. He also announced the formation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry to be headed by Sir Walter Shaw to inquire into the immediate causes of the riots. Finally, he concludes, the incidents will not result in a change of British policy with regard to Palestine as laid down in the 1917 Balfour Declaration, namely to favor the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. Despite Sir John's final assurance in this Emergency Decree, the Shaw Commission decided the cause of the riots had been Arab feelings of animosity consequent upon the disappointment in their national aspirations and fear for their future. Thus the Commission proposed restriction of Jewish migration to Palestine and restrictions on the purchase of land by Jews. As a result, in October 1929, the Colonial Secretary Lord Passfield issued a "White Paper" which further whittled down the meaning of the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate and foreshadowed fresh restrictions on Jewish immigration and settlement in Palestine (Encyclopaedia Judaica). With seal of the British High Commissioner of Palestine. Text in Hebrew. Fine condition. Scarce.

SOVIET CRITICS OF USA IN 1930] Sovremennaya Amerika [i.e. Modern America]

Krasnaya gazeta, Leningrad 1929 - 100 pp.: ill. 17?13 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Restoration of the spine, previous owner's ink stamp on the title page, margin of p.65 is cut off (the text is not affected). Cover design by Georgy Fitingof (1905-1975), Soviet artist and illustrator well known for his work in children's and adventure literature. He worked many times with famous Russian magazine Vokrug sveta [i.e. Around the World]. This edition brings together some of the facts about contemporary United States of America. USA is often referred as the Empire of the Dollar in the book. The general tone of the book is unapproving, especially concerning worker's class and USA-USSR relationship. In 1920s the images of the United States produced in the Soviet Union often strongly criticized the American social and economic system, yet underlying these hostilities was an admiration for American industrial achievement and an aspiration to model Soviet advancements on, and then surpass, those of the West. The book is supplied with the illustrations of union rallies, unemployment and workers queuing for the food. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Duchess Laura, Certain Days of Her Life

Ward Lock, London 1929 - 8vo. 351pp. Publisher's blue cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board. Minor edgewear and scuffing, small dent or nick to fore-edge of rear board otherwise a very good copy indeed, in a very nice example of the unclipped cream dustjacket, light scuffing and soiling here and there but really very handsome. Inscribed by the author to the front flyleaf (with "kindest remembering") to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Winchester and with a laid in ALS to the same discussing a meeting. Rather a romp of a novel with a multiplicity of story lines involving the same rather aristocratic family and their adventures involving gold-digging actresses after the eldest son, nefarious criminal types seducing the daughter (it all turns out fine with the appearance of a poverty stricken Indian Army Officer), and a female master criminal seeking to make off with the famed Catherine Ruby.all of which probably makes for hectic get-togethers. Not by any means a common book anyway, this frothily criminous novel is made all the more interesting by the association, Clarence Winchester was Assistant Chief Editor at Cassell's and was at various times involved with The Argosy, The Storyteller and the epic "Railway Wonders of The World." Mrs. Belloc Lowndes is somewhat less famous than she used to be, which is a shame considering her considerable influence and massive output; sister of Hilaire Belloc and daughter of noted English feminist Bessie Parkes she wrote a tremendous number of novels, short stories and articles (some of which are bound to have ended up in Mr. Winshester's periodicals) and is perhaps best known for her novel "The Lodger"; an early fictionalised version of the Jack the Ripper murders which has been filmed and adapted numerous times but is perhaps most importantly the first film of Alfred Hitchcock. nov [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Scrapbook-photograph album documenting a cross-country trip from Brooklyn to San Francisco on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle

Transcontinental United States, 1929. This 11" x 7.5" album contains 88 pages packed with over 80 photographs (2.75" x 2") plus postcards, his bill-of-sale, driver's permits, tickets, original art, souvenir stickers, telegrams, and other ephemera. The album and contents are in very nice shape. Baker, the grandson of artist-illustrator Peter Newell who funded the Newell collection at Yale University, purchased his Harley-Davidson motorcycle from the Koch-Ruhle dealership in the summer of 1928 and used it to travel cross-country to San Francisco via St. Louis, the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, San Diego, and Los Angeles. While in California, Baker toured National Parks, visited museums and tourist sights, and attended concerts. He eventually sold his motorcycle and booked passage on the S. S. Charles R. McCormick from San Francisco to return to New York. Highlights include * The bill of sale showing Baker paid $252 for his motorcycle; * Baker's New York motorcycle operator's license; * Many photographs of Baker on the Harley; * Baker's American Motorcycle Association membership card; * A pocket flap, presumable from a heavy shirt or light jacket worn on the journey; * A map of St. Louis prepared by the "49th State Touring Club" with Baker's route from Eads Bridge to U.S. Highway 40 outlined in green; * Permits to operate the motorcycle in the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and General Grant National Parks; * Several colorful Shell Gasoline tourist stickers; * Bakers' California Agriculture certificate and non-resident driver's license; * An Automobile Club map of San Diego with Baker's route through the city outlined in red; * Photographs on board the McCormick and an original watercolor of Baker's cabin. Albums documenting cross-country automobile trips from the 1920s are scarce. Comprehensive photo-scrapbooks in excellent condition documenting 1920s transcontinental motorcycle trips from New York City to San Francisco with return by steamship are simply non-existent.
