Scrapbook-photograph album documenting a cross-country trip from Brooklyn to San Francisco on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle

Transcontinental United States, 1929. This 11" x 7.5" album contains 88 pages packed with over 80 photographs (2.75" x 2") plus postcards, his bill-of-sale, driver's permits, tickets, original art, souvenir stickers, telegrams, and other ephemera. The album and contents are in very nice shape. Baker, the grandson of artist-illustrator Peter Newell who funded the Newell collection at Yale University, purchased his Harley-Davidson motorcycle from the Koch-Ruhle dealership in the summer of 1928 and used it to travel cross-country to San Francisco via St. Louis, the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, San Diego, and Los Angeles. While in California, Baker toured National Parks, visited museums and tourist sights, and attended concerts. He eventually sold his motorcycle and booked passage on the S. S. Charles R. McCormick from San Francisco to return to New York. Highlights include * The bill of sale showing Baker paid $252 for his motorcycle; * Baker's New York motorcycle operator's license; * Many photographs of Baker on the Harley; * Baker's American Motorcycle Association membership card; * A pocket flap, presumable from a heavy shirt or light jacket worn on the journey; * A map of St. Louis prepared by the "49th State Touring Club" with Baker's route from Eads Bridge to U.S. Highway 40 outlined in green; * Permits to operate the motorcycle in the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and General Grant National Parks; * Several colorful Shell Gasoline tourist stickers; * Bakers' California Agriculture certificate and non-resident driver's license; * An Automobile Club map of San Diego with Baker's route through the city outlined in red; * Photographs on board the McCormick and an original watercolor of Baker's cabin. Albums documenting cross-country automobile trips from the 1920s are scarce. Comprehensive photo-scrapbooks in excellent condition documenting 1920s transcontinental motorcycle trips from New York City to San Francisco with return by steamship are simply non-existent.

Duchess Laura, Certain Days of Her Life

Ward Lock: London, 1929. 8vo. 351pp. Publisher's blue cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board. Minor edgewear and scuffing, small dent or nick to fore-edge of rear board otherwise a very good copy indeed, in a very nice example of the unclipped cream dustjacket, light scuffing and soiling here and there but really very handsome. Inscribed by the author to the front flyleaf (with "kindest remembering") to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Winchester and with a laid in ALS to the same discussing a meeting. Rather a romp of a novel with a multiplicity of story lines involving the same rather aristocratic family and their adventures involving gold-digging actresses after the eldest son, nefarious criminal types seducing the daughter (it all turns out fine with the appearance of a poverty stricken Indian Army Officer), and a female master criminal seeking to make off with the famed Catherine Ruby...all of which probably makes for hectic get-togethers. Not by any means a common book anyway, this frothily criminous novel is made all the more interesting by the association, Clarence Winchester was Assistant Chief Editor at Cassell's and was at various times involved with The Argosy, The Storyteller and the epic "Railway Wonders of The World." Mrs. Belloc Lowndes is somewhat less famous than she used to be, which is a shame considering her considerable influence and massive output; sister of Hilaire Belloc and daughter of noted English feminist Bessie Parkes she wrote a tremendous number of novels, short stories and articles (some of which are bound to have ended up in Mr. Winshester's periodicals) and is perhaps best known for her novel "The Lodger"; an early fictionalised version of the Jack the Ripper murders which has been filmed and adapted numerous times but is perhaps most importantly the first film of Alfred Hitchcock. .

A BRIGHT COLOR PORTRAIT OF THE FRENCH STATESMAN WHO LED THE NATION IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR, SIGNED BY GEORGES CLEMENCEAU.

Paris, November, 1929. - Paris, November, 1929. 1929. Fair. - A 7-1/2 inch high by 4-7/8 inch wide color portrait of Georges Clemenceau mounted into an 11 inch high by 7-1/8 inch wide mat. The portrait depicts the French Prime Minister from the shoulders up, a period hat above his heavy white eyebrows and mustache. Signed "Clemenceau" in ink on the mat below the image. The portrait, mounted with glue from the verso, is scratched, heavily creased, and subsequently waxed to protect it. The crude mat's backing is stained and the keyhole mat itself is cracked at the bottom and top edges. An autograph letter accompanying the signed portrait attests that Clemenceau signed the portrait on his deathbed. The letter, dated November 29, 1929, reads as follows: "Monsieur, Monsieur Clemenceau ayant signe cette photographie que vous lui avez envoyee la veille de sa mort, je me fais le devoir de vous l'envoyer. Bien respectueusement." Clemenceau died 5 days earlier, on November 24th. This letter has been folded for mailing. The leader of the Radical Party, Georges Clemenceau played a central role during France's Third Republic, serving as it's Prime Minister from 1906 to 1909 and subsequently leading the nation in the First World War. He again served as his nation's Prime Minister from 1917 to 1920. One of the principal architects of the Treaty of Versailles, he pushed for the restitution of Alsace-Lorraine to France.Provenance: From the autograph collection of Seymour Halpern. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Middle Parts Of Fortune; Somme And Ancre 1916

TRONG> 1929 - The limited first edition of Frederic Manning's powerful novel, set in the trenches during the First World War. The novel was written in response to the sudden demand in the late 1920s for literary material dealing with the war. Whereas before the war Manning acheived little real success with his literary efforts, this work is considered one of the most important novels dealing with the conflict. His own experience of battle informs the work throughout, both in its emotional tenor and factual detail. The novel was originally published under the pseudonym Private 19022 - Manning's own number during the war. His authorship was not widely confirmed until the 70s. As he says in the introduction, in recording the conversations of the men I seemed at times to hear the voices of ghosts. This first edition was printed on handmade paper and limited to 520 copies. This is number 47. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Condition: In the original cloth with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally excellent with a small mark to the front board of volume two only. The bottom edge of the text blocksare untrimmed but clean. Volume two has a couple of small spots to the foredge. Internally, clean and bright, and firmly bound. Overall: FINE [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A SUPERB SEPIA TONED PHOTOGRAPH PORTRAIT OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL CONDUCTOR FRITZ REINER BY NICKOLAS MURAY, DATED AND SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

New York, 1929.. 1929.. Very good. - sc A 9-7/9 inch high by 8 inch wide softly hued sepia photograph depicting the great classical music conductor Fritz Reiner in profile from the chest up. Neatly attired in a three piece suit and tie over white shirt, Fritz Reiner's gently, softly smiling face appears illuminated by inspiration. The photographer's stamp is embossed on the bottom left of the image. The photograph is mounted by the photographer, with glue from the verso, into a 15-3/4 inch high by 11-1/2 inch wide creamy white mat. Signed in pencil on the mat at right immediately under the image "Muray" and dated "1929" by the photographer. There are a few spots of abrasion to the emulsion along the top with a couple of spots at the top right corner of the image. A beautiful portrait housed in the photographer's light gray cardboard folder with his pictorial device above his name on the folder's front cover. <p>The Hungarian-born conductor Frederick Martin "Fritz" Reiner (1888-1963) was highly regarded for his performances of Opera and symphonic music. Born in Budapest to a secular Jewish family he studied the piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy. Among his teachers was the young composer Bela Bartok. For a time, he worked closely with Richard Strauss before moving to the USA in 1922 to take over as condutor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Taking citizenship in his new country, he taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Both Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss where among his students. His appointment as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 marked the pinnacle of his career which included landmark recordings.<p>Like Fritz Reiner, the photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) was born in Hungary. He was a student of lithography, photoengraving and photography. Having fled Europe at the advent of the first World War, he settled in Brooklyn where he found work as a color printer. Opening a studio in Greenwich Village in 1920, he was soon commisioned by Harper's Bazaar to do a portrait of the Broadway actor Florence Reed. Harper's Bazaar were apparently happy with his work as they were soon publishing his photographs on a near monthly basis. As his reputation grew, New York City's elite and celebrities sought him out to have the portraits taken and in 1926, Vanity Fair sent him to Europe to photograph celebrities in London, Paris and Berlin and, in 1929 hired him to photograph Hollywood movie stars. Moving away from his earlier work, Muray turned to commercial photography becoming famous for his work in color advertising.

The Red Letter New Testament: Translated out of the Original Greek; and with the former Translations diligently Compared and Revised, by His Majesty's Special Command

London & New York: Collins' Clear-Type Press, n.d. (1929?). Very good antiquarian condition. 358, [2] p. (last 2 pages blank). Illustrated throughout with color illustrations. Bound in original quarter brown morocco, wooden boards with an overlay of approximately 100 pieces of mother-of-pearl arranged ornamentally: central panel enclosing a five-pointed star on upper cover, on lower the Jerusalem Cross. One piece of mother-of-pearl lost from the upper corner of lower board, another slightly damaged on front cover. An extremely elaborate mother-of-pearl binding on the "Red Letter Testament," possibly bound in Jerusalem. For no apparent reason, the foot of the spine is stamped "Jerusalem," the upper cover bears the Star of David, and the lower cover bears the ornamental design of the Jerusalem Cross. These clues suggest that the volume was bound in Jerusalem, not London or New York. Certainly it is unlikely that a London or New York binder would have utilized wooden boards. A brilliant specimen.

Photo album of New York's "Roaring Twenties". New York, 1928-1929.

1929. 175 b/w prints, mainly c. 83 x 57 mm. Mounted on black cardboard in oblong folio (335 x 250 mm) leather album. Marbled endpapers. Fine collection of travel snapshots, taken between summer 1928 and summer 1929, showing off New York during the last months of the Roaring Twenties, not long before the Crash of October 1929. Meticulously captioned in Swedish, the series begins with an atmospheric early-morning view of New York harbour as seen from the deck of the "Kungsholm". This is followed by photos of the New York skyline, steamers on the Hudson, bathing scenes in Central Park, the newly-built Kensico Dam near White Plains, various street scenes (showing streetcars, city-buses, the elevated Manhattan Railway, Manhattan Bridge, advertisements, motorcars, pedestrians on 5th Avenue, etc.), views of architecture and shots taken from skyscrapers, Columbia University, and Long Island. The photos include portraits not only of the travellers, but also of the hotel personnel, people bathing in Atlantic City, and a black nanny. Events captured in snapshots include a Belmont Park horse race on May 25, 1929, and the funeral parade held on July 18, 1928, in honour of the crashed pilot Emilio Carranza (the "Mexican Lindbergh"). Gustaf Schult, the principal photographer of the series (and occasionally depicted therein), was a member of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. - Includes four issues of the on-board journal of the TS Drottningholm published for the Göteborg-New York journey (June 12-18, 1928) as well as the passenger list of the MS Kungsholm during Schult's return from New York to Göteborg in June 1929.

        Eigenh. Manuskript (Fragment). O. O. u. D.

1929. 2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.

Autograph letter signed ("Moritz"). Vienna, 7. I. 1929.

1929. Large 8vo. 5 pp. Important letter to his friend, the actress Gerda Tardel: "[...] I am again severely burdened with unpleasant tasks, especially scientific correspondence and reading dissertations, and I am thereby hampered in developing my own thoughts. But that makes no difference: I do manage to finish the really important things, and the more I encounter the true brilliance of genius, the less importance I attach to the normal professorial productions. In the meantime, a long-planned project, a series which I would like to edit and which I hope will achieve nothing less than a revolutionary reform of philosophy, is getting under way [...]". - Together with Philipp Frankl, Schlick was soon to introduce the "Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung", which he would go on to edit until his death.
