"The Maltese Falcon": The third of five parts in Black Mask, November 1929

New York: Pro-Distributors Publishing Company, 1929. First appearance of the Dashiell Hammett novel, (part 3 of 5 parts), "The Maltese Falcon," in the November 1929 issue of the Black Mask pulp magazine. The five parts were collected and published as a novel by Alfred A. Knopf in 1930. The turning point in Hammett's career. The author stuck exclusively with Continental Op stories (and longer Op stories in parts, including "Red Harvest" and "The Dain Curse"). But the success of "The Maltese Falcon" in Black Mask and especially as a novel, led to a new level of popularity for both Hammett and the pulp magazine that defined him. Also featured in this issue is a short story by noted hardboiled writer Frederick Nebel, "Hell-Smoke." Good only in wrappers. Spine panel is missing entirely, some chips at the wrapper extremities, and a few repairs (though no restoration). An acceptable copy overall.

Autograph draft of poem written for Willi and Margarete Lebach

Dusseldorf, 1929. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph draft of an untitled poem in German, written to Willibald and Margarete Lebach. 1 sheet, on verso of a typed letter signed to Einstein from German humorist Emil Schröder (1896-1977) dated 18 April 1929. Düsseldorf, [after 18 April] 1929 (dated in pencil by Einstein’s secretary, Helen Dukas, in the top margin). Creased where previously folded, margins a bit frayed and chipped, but very good. Einstein had a gift for impromptu light verse, as is shown in this poem written to thank his friends Willi and Margarete (Grete) Lebach for their hospitality when he attended a conference of the German Physical Society in Düsseldorf in 1929. The poem dates from around the time that Einstein and Margarete Lebach became lovers, a relationship that appears to have lasted until Einstein left Germany permanently in 1933. In the early 1930s Margarete visited Einstein weekly, bringing home-baked pastries to placate Einstein’s jealous wife, Elsa, who would always leave the house to go shopping in Berlin on the days that Margarete was with her husband. The poem can be translated as follows: When you are in trouble When you are a burden to yourself When your heart feels empty and desolate When life weighs heavily on you There is still help for you: Move quickly to the Lebach’s house There good spirits rise again There you’ll like life again. Here rules with clever precision Wilhelm’s latest soldier Who for Germany’s good fortune Conducts his elevated politics But the housewife sweet and gentle Like an early Madonna painting Radiating joy and peace Happy to whom this house belongs. Next to the poem, in what may be Margarete Lebach’s hand, is a penciled inscription in German, which can be translated as: “You can have so much beauty in you / That the others around you are beggars.” Einstein wrote his poem on the back of a letter sent to him by Emil Schröder, a minor German writer and humorist, who had enclosed his own dialect poem (not present) to Einstein. Einstein appears not to have thought much of Schröder’s poem, writing “Versuche nie /Frau Poesie” (Leave Lady Poetry alone) on the letter’s verso. Hoffman, Einstein’s Berlin: In the Footsteps of a Genius, p. 153.

Fleur-de-Neige et d'Autres Contes de Grimm

Paris: L'Édition d'Art, 1929. Limited edition. Softcover. g to vg. 1/2000. Large quarto (11 3/4 x 9 1/4"). 117, [3]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over blind wrappers. Red and black-lettered title page within decorative frame. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Book housed in its original green cloth lined slipcase. Illustrated with twelve striking tissue-guarded mounted plates in full color, "Fleur-de-Neige et d'Autres Contes de Grimm" is a celebrated collection of twelve folktales by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who spent their lives collecting and publishing folklore during the 19th century. Kay Nielsen's fantasy illustrations are bold, and vibrant - often reproduced by a 4-color process which set him apart from his contemporaries who typically used a 3-color process. His art is characterized by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre quality and his ephemeral illustrations are intricately inventive, flirting with implausibility. One of 2,000 numbered copies, of which this is No. 794.Some foxing to slipcase. Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine. Text in French. Slipcase in overall good, dust-jacket and blind wrappers in good+, interior in very good condition.

Der Kamf. Monatshrift farn Poyle-Tsienistishn Gedank.

Paris Imp. d'Art Voltaire 1929 - 48 pp. 23,8 x 15,5 cm. Original illustrated wrappers with typographical original woodcut (somewhat dusty, faded, stapling rusted, small owner's stamp to front wrapper). Browning due to paper, some staining and creasing. Extremely rare Polish-Zionist magazine, published in Paris. The publication, which was obviously part of the circle of the General Jewish Labour Bund – a secular Jewish Socialist party, founded in Vilnius in 1897; contains contributions by various authors. Articles deal with emigration to Palestine and reflect a collective ideology of settlement based on socialism. The typographic cover illustration, which is a key motif, recalls the avant-garde work of István Irsai (1896-1968) Hungarian-born Israeli architect and graphic designer, who designed the Hebrew font "Haim" (named after Haim Nachman Bialik), as well as Zionist posters, the Broom (avant-garde art magazine), and Ha Kumkum (The Kettle); he also designed stage sets as well as logos and theatre programs.         [COVER DESIGN BY RODCHENKO] Rechevik: Stikhi [i.e. Orator: Verse]

Moscow: GIZ, 1929. 192 pp. 17,5 х 13 cm. In original illustrated Constructivist wrappers by Alexander Rodchenko. Very good. Slightly restored wrappers on the extremities. One of 2000 copies. Rodchenko's work in book design had begun with handmade carbon-copied books in the late teens that continued an earlier Futurist aesthetic and were made in very small editions. By contrast, his later constructivist book covers were issued by the state publishing house in much larger numbers. One of the latter is the wraparound cover for Orator: Verse, which exemplifies the architectural, rationalized, compositional structure of the post-Revolution design aesthetic («Artists and Prints: Masterworks from The Museum of Modern Art». New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 2004). Tretyakov was an important Leftist poet and the author of the plays 'Rychi Kitai!' [i.e. Roar, China!] and 'Khochu rebenka' [i.e. I Want a Child]. This cover is one of Rodchenko's most famous constructivist designs. MoMA. #826, Turchinsky. P. 536, Lesman. #2271.         Antologia breve dagli scritti postumi di Ettore Serra

Appresso i figli di M. Zellich stampatori, 1929. In 8, cm 17 x 22, pp. 98 + (10).

Enduring the Truth, original holograph manuscript of his review of Walter Lippmann's A Preface to Morals

A fine, closely written, authorial manuscript of Santayana's review of Lippmann's A Preface to Morals (1929) appearing in the New Adelphi, 3, 1929-30, and in the Saturday Review on December 7, 1929. With a single word variant in the first paragraph where Santayana's MS gives "perceived" rather than "conceived" in the printed version: "Very few would give up living as they live, simply because they had conceived, in some lucid moment, that it wasn't worth while." While Lippmann is considered one of the fathers of the modern study of public opinion, the influence Santayana had in the shaping of Lippmann's ideas is often overlooked. The influence Santayana had on Lippmann was evident from their very first meeting in 1907, when the latter enrolled in a Greek philosophy course taught by Santayana. That same year Lippmann read Santayana's Life of Reason. The second volume of this 5 volume work lays out Santayana's ideas on good government, notions that coincide with the later thinking of the mature Lippmann. Santayana's influence led Lippmann to study philosophy after abandoning art history which had originally brought Lippmann to Harvard. During his remaining years in Cambridge Lippmann took all of the philosophy courses offered by Santayana. During this period there existed a mutual fascination between the two. In 1910 Santayana nominated Lippmann as assistant professor in philosophy, a position given up by Lippmann only one year later. In 1929, John Middleton Murry, editor of the New Adelphi, asked Santayana for a critique of Lippmann's A Preface to Morals, claiming that it would be of interest to read Santayana's opinion of his disciple's work. - César García, "Walter Lippmann and George Santayana: A Shared Vision of Society and Public Opinion." (The Journal of American Culture, 29:2, 2006), pp.183-185. In his September 17 reply to Murry, Santayana writes of Lippmann: "I hardly think of Lippmann as a disciple of mine, but he was once my pupil, and I saw him again last winter in Rome. If you will send me his Preface to Morals, I shall certainly read it with interest; and if nothing should occur to me worth saying about it, I think I can promise to send you something else instead." - Holzberger, William H., ed. The Letters of George Santayana, Fourth Book: 1928-1932, (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2002), p.130. Santayana completed his review by October of 1929: "Here is somebody [Lippmann] who confidently believes that mankind can endure the truth; and mankind seems to be gallantly confirming his good opinion, since we are told that his book is selling in America by the hundred thousand. This success is not due to scandal: nothing could be more respectful, more scrupulous, more modest than Mr Lippmann's sincerity. But he tells us that religion is decayed, and that the whole system of morals founded on religion has lost its authority." "It would be interesting to hear what he [Lippmann] foresees will be the ruling passions, favourite pleasures, and dominant beliefs of mankind, when the hitherto adventurous, selfish human animal has become thoroughly socialized, mechanized, hygienic, and irreligious. In this book we learn little of this..." Further in his review, Santayana writes: "Producers produce, inventors invent, advertizers advertize, the public is coaxed when it is not stampeded, new needs are created, luxury spreads, phrases, ideas, and enthusiasms sweep over the well-rooted but pliable nation like summer winds over a field of corn. Everybody pushes, and everybody yields to pressure; but as the pushed is one and those pushing him are many millions, his ultimate movement is in God's hands rather than in his own. Now this predicament, with which most people put up good-naturedly so long as, on the whole, they are prosperous, seems to Mr Lippmann most favourable to 'high religion'. It involves a continual surrender of childish wishes and arbitrary ideas." "Human nature in the individual is accordingly autonomous. It may find or establish points or support outside, in material forces or in what we call the arts: society, science and cooperative industry may supply special fields or special instruments for the exercise of human faculty and since human nature is variable and subject to education, these ambient influences may modify the character of certain men.... But the appeal of these new sanctities must still be to the individual heart. If pure science or social equilibrium or the blind multiplication, complication, and acceleration of business took the bit in their teeth, and imposed themselves on the human soul otherwise than in its own interest, they would be nothing but insufferable pests and new embodiments of Moloch." Santayana concludes: "The virility and chivalry of virtue lie precisely in being inflexibly true to oneself... I commend this reflection to those who feel safe in their ethics and politics if they think they are swimming with the tide - a form of cowardice peculiarly modern and peculiarly short-sighted. Tides will turn, and even at the flood they are not the foundation of the human good, nor the criterion of it. The foundation, like the criterion, is in the heart." In a letter to Murry of October 5, Santayana writes: "Canby, the editor of the New York Saturday Review of Literature, whom you probably have heard of, and who is an old acquaintance of mine, has lately written asking for a contribution, and he expressly said that anything I wrote for him might be simultaneously published in England. If it were possible for you to send him, or to send me for him, an advanced proof or copy of this article, so that it might appear in New York at about the same time as in London, I should be glad of it...". - Holzberger, ibid, p.132. Santayana's review, "Enduring the Truth", appeared in Murry's New Adelphi in London and in the Saturday Review in the U.S. in December 1929 and is apparently unpublished in book-form. Lippmann's response, "A Footnote to Santayana", was printed in the very same issue of the Saturday Review. Santayana replied in a January 16, 1930 letter to Henry Seidel Canby (the Saturday Review's first editor). Santayana admits to feeling "... surprised at the tone of Lippmann's reply to my article. I thought he would be pleased, and certainly I had liked his book very much; but apparently he requires us all to share his vague hopes of 'high religious' worldly organization, and is angry if we are attached to some different political ideal." - Holzberger, ibid, p.158. According to García, "there is no evidence that the two men ever met again." - García, op. cit, p.185 Large 8vo, 10 pages, on unlined printed stationery, Villa Le Balze, Fiesole, written on versos only. Faint trace of old paper clip residue on the first and final leaves, folded once from mailing, otherwise the manuscript is in fine condition, in its original packaging as despatched to W.D. Richey of Bethany College by Charles Rare Books, Buntingford, Herts in 1958.

The Middle Parts of Fortune: Somme and Ancre, 1916.

London: The Piazza Press, issued to subscribers by Peter Davies, 1929.. LIMITED FIRST EDITION. In Two Volumes. Octavo. pp. viii, 226 [4]; 227-453. No. 167 of 520 copies printed on handmade paper. Bound in brown cloth lettered and ruled in gilt to back-strip, with marbled endpapers and top edge gilt. Largely unopened, with fragments of the original glassine jacket with paper flaps (all flaps present), housed in the publisher's burgundy slip-case with thumbhole access. Books are very fine, case with some light rubbing and one bump to corner. This is the original text of the novel which became widely known as 'Her Privates We' when published under that title the following year; various 'prunings and excisions' were made to the trade edition as the bluntness of language was thought to make the book unfit for public distribution. T.E. Lawrence commented "No praise could be too sheer for this book".
