The Works of Shakespeare. The text of the First Folio with Quarto variants and a selection of modern readings.

London: Nonesuch Press, 1929. Seven volumes, octavo, top-edges gilded 'on the rough' and others uncut; publisher's full tan niger morocco by A. W. Bain, with raised bands and gilt spine lettering. A splendid set: a benchmark for modern editions of Shakespeare and the 'chef d'oeuvre' for the famous Nonesuch Press. Edited by Herbert Farjeon, this set offers a fine combination of scholarly collation of the quarto variants against the first folio, with a beautiful physical design of both typography and binding. The overall design was by Francis Meynell; the text was printed at the Cambridge University Press, in Monotype Fournier with freshly-cut initials specifically made for this edition, and the bindings were prepared by A.W. Bain in London. The set was limited to 1600 copies."You have created a most marvellous pleasure", T. E. Lawrence wrote to his friend David Garnett. "I have handled it ever so many times, and read The Tempest right through. It satisfies. It is final, like the Kelmscott Chaucer or the Ashendene Virgil."This would appear to be an early set: rather than being numbered, it is embossed with the Nonesuch stamp 'This Book is Out of Series - For Review'. Some staining and discolouration of the leather, a good sound set.

        Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Florence: Privately printed [Edward Titus], 1929. Second authorized edition: the Author's Unabridged Popular Edition. Octavo, pp.365. Bound in original brown paper wrappers printed in black, with Phoenix design to front cover, white label to spine, price "60Frs" to upper right and "LeCram Press-Paris" printed on back cover. One of 3000 copies printed; the novel was initially published in an edition of 1,000 copies by the Orioli Press, Florence (1928), and was almost immediately pirated by at least four different publishers. Lawrence had always intended to release a cheap version, and hoped that this official cheaper edition would discourage piracies. He struck a deal with Edward Titus and wrote a new introduction regarding the pirated printings entitled 'My Skirmish with Jolly Roger'.Fragile covers with some wear, a few tears to joints, some small chips to spine ends, title label intact, some edge-chipping. Overall a decent copy of this notoriously fragile book, seldom seen in such condition. Housed in a bespoke black morocco-spined clamshell box with felt lining. An uncommon survival.

Outpost of the Lost: An Arctic Adventure -- Signed and inscribed by Brainard on the Half-title page.

Cartographic end leaves front and rear. A Very Good + copy inside and out -- complete. Signed, inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Brainard on he half-title page. Arctic Bibliography 2071 This book consists of the private journals of Sgt. Brainard on polar exploration in 1888, one of the six survivors of the ill-fated Greely expedition. The U.S. International Polar Year Expedition of 1881-4, aka Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, led by Army Lieutenant Adolphus Greely, reached Lady Franklin Bay in August 1881 and established a scientific research station. Although Greely was without previous Arctic experience, he and his party performed notable feats of exploration; many unknown miles along the coast of NW Greenland were added to the map, Ellesmere Island was crossed from east to west, and Second Lieutenant James B. Lockwood achieved a new northern record of 83°24'. The expedition ultimately had tragic results. Their fatal mistake was in plunging into the extremely dangerous ice of Smith Sound, without having established, at the mouth of that sound, a depot of provisions and a house upon which they could fall back in case of disaster. The failure of supply ships to reach the expedition in the next 2 years forced Greely to abandon the station and retreat to Cape Sabine. Relief ships were sent over the next 2 years, but failed to reach Greely's party encamped at Cape Sabine, the 'Proteus' being a store ship bringing much needed supplies who was sunk by ice en route. Finally, the third relief vessel arrived in 1884, all but Greely and six others had perished from starvation, drowning, or exposure. The survivors were near death, and one died on the homeward journey. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Celtic Druids, or An Attempt to show, that The Druids were the Priests of Oriental Colonies Who Emigrated from India; and were the Introducers of the First or Cadmean System of Letters, and the Builders of Stonehenge, of Carnac, and of Other Cyclopean Works, in Asia and Europe

London: Rowland Hunter/Hurst & Chance/Ridgway and Sons, 1929. Second Issue. Hardcover. Very Good. The first printing was issued in 1827 in a slightly shorter version and had fewer plates than this volume. Quarto. Bound in half red morocco over marbled boards. Spine with 5 raised bands and gilt title and date. Top edge gilt. Marbled end papers. Besides the present title page it also includes the lithographic title page from the first edition. Full page errata sheet with second (smaller) errata slip tipped in on the following page. 324 pages. Illustrated with 45 lithographic plates, many of which are large foldout plans of Stonehenge and other monuments, plus one map, and wood vignettes at the beginning and end of each chapter. This copy belonged to noted Welsh scholar and bookbinder, Henry Blackwell, with his bookplate to front pastedown. Blackwell also bound this particular copy. Very light edgewear and slight rubbing to boards, a couple of tiny scuff marks to the leather on spine. Some light foxing on several pages but mostly mild and in margin areas. The binding is strong and secure. A very well preserved copy of this scarce work. A VERY GOOD TO NEAR FINE COPY. Higgins attempts to show that the Druids of the British Isles were the priests of a very ancient nation called Celtae, and that they were a colony from the first race of people, a learned and enlightened people, the descendants of those who escaped the effects of the deluge on the borders of the Caspain Sea. He claims they were the earliest occupiers of Greece, Italy, France and Briton, arriving in those places by a route along the 45th parallel (north). He stresses that other colonies from this same great nation advanced via a southern line through Asia, peopling the Middle East and Africa, and arriving into Europe by sea through the Straights of Gibraltar (the Pillars of Hercules). He also attempts to show that all the languages of the Western world were the same, and that one system of letters, that of the ancient Irish Druids, was common to the British Isles, Italy, Greece, Syria, Arabia, Persia and Hindustan. As you may imagine he was the subject of a lot of ridicule from scholars of his time. Regardless, this is a fascinating exploration of ideas and his examinations of Stonehenge, the Avebury and Carnac areas, and other locations with monumental structures is very interesting indeed. Higgins prefaced this 1829 second edition stating that he was preparing a review of "all the ancient Mythologies of the world, which, however varied, and corrupted in recent times, were originally one, and that one founded on principles sublime, beautiful, and true." This review would later become his most famous work: Anacalypsis. Some of the chapter headings are as follows: Necessity of Etymology; Alphabets; Changes in Language; Druids acquainted with Letters; Irish, Greek, and Hebrew Letters the same; Hieroglyphics; Ciphering invented before Letters; Virgil a Druid; Genesis; Persia, India, and China, the Depositaries, not the Inventors of Science; Who the Celts were; Affinity between the Latin, Sanskrit, and Celtic; Term Barbarian; Arrival of Phoenician Colonies in Ireland; Origin of Irish Fables; Derivation of the word Britain; Hero Gods; Derivation of the words: Albion, Druid, Vates and Bards; Britain known to Aristotle; Road to Britain lost, like that to America and Australia; magnetic Needle; Ancient Oracles founded by Celts; Druids probably Pythagoreans; Cross common to Greeks, Egyptians, and Indians; Monograms of Christ; Druids admitted the Creation of Matter; Festivals removed by the procession of the Equinoxes; Druid Festival of Christmas; Mother of the Gods; Baal; Gods of India and Ireland the same; Chaldees of the Jews; St. Patrick; A single Plain Stone the Origin of Idolatry; Rocking-Stones or Logan Stones; Circular Temples, Stonehenge and Abury; Stonehenge not a Roman, Saxon, or Danish Work; Ancient Superstitions respecting Numbers; Observations on Hebrew Chronology; Hierarchy of the Druids; Druids Assertors of their Country's Liberty; Immortality of the Soul and Metempsychosis; Druids had an excellent System ofMorals; Mistletoe and other Sacred Plants; Institution of Priesthoods an Evil, etc.

White Bottoms: A Set of four Pochoirs.

Paris 1929 - Four hand-coloured pochoir prints, mounted, overall dimensions 61 x 44.5cm. These beautiful and witty prints were published as part of the album White Bottoms by a French caricaturist SEM (1863-1934). This charming and electric work illustrates the joy and excess of the Jazz Age; the title humorously refers to the Black Bottom, the dance craze that overtook the Charleston as the era's trademark leg-play. White Bottoms is illustrative and humorous depiction of the aging Parisian upper-class contemporary to the artist. The work is in some way a record of the last days of full sun in Paris before the turbulent and economically unstable thirties.

ALBANIA / GEOLOGY – ORIGINAL PUBLISHER’S PROOF: GEOLOGISCHE KARTE VON NORDALBANIEN AUFGENOMMEN VON DR. FRANZ BARON NOPCSA 1905 – 1916.

Budapest: Magyar Állami Földtani Intézet [Geological Institute of Hungary] [] 1929 - Chromolithograph with monochrome lithographed overlay on transparent paper (Excellent, clean old vertical and horizontal folds), 66 x 60 cm (26 x 23.5 inches). The original publisher’s proof of Franz Baron von Nopcsa’s geological map of Northern Albania, the first scientific geological map of the region. This intriguing production is the original publisher’s proof from the Magyar Állami Földtani Intézet (Geological Institute of Hungary) of Franz Baron Nopcsa’s geological map of Northern Albania, being the first scientific geological map of that region. Nopcsa was a Hungarian nobleman, and a world-renowned paleontologist and geologist, who from 1905 to 1916, resided in Albania, where he became a leading authority on that nation’s history, culture and natural sciences, as well as a prominent member of its independence movement. He remains one of the biggest names in modern Albanian history. During his time in Albania, Nopcsa conducted the first scientific geological reconnaissance of the country, with a particular focus on the northern regions. The present publisher’s proof consists of two distinct physical parts: first, the lower chromolithographed map is based directly on Baron Nopcsa’s original manuscript geological sketch map of the region; second, the transparent overlay, featuring a highly precise monochrome skeletal road map of the region, was intended to both contextualize Nopcsa’s geological mapping and to correct his relatively geodetic errors. For the resulting printed map, issued to accompany Nopcsa’s academic article, ‘Geographie und Geologie Nordalbaniens’, within the journal Geologica Hungarica, Series Geologica, vol. 3 (Budapest: Magyar Állami Földtani Intézet, 1929), these two components were combined, such that the information upon the overlay was integrated into the main map, which naturally necessitated some amendments to the positioning of certain features. Northern Albania was a region of exceptionally rugged topography, and traditionally an area of great political instability, meaning that it was one of the last regions of Europe to be geologically surveyed. Nopcsa’s principally German-language map embraces all of Albania north of the Ishem River (labeled here as the ‘Mata’), a land dominated by the North Albanian Alps, and including the area around the major city of ‘Scutari’ (Shkoder), extending its overage a little ways into coastal Montenegro, as far as Bar. The various geological zones are colour-coded, identified on the two legends on the right side of the map, the ‘Farbenerklärung [Explanation of Colours] (Sediment)’ notes 13 sedimentary zones; while the ‘Farbenerklärung (Eruptiva)’ notes 6 zones created by volcanic activity, plus noting the red lines that demarcates tectonic faults. The ‘Zeichenklärung’ (Explanation of Symbols), in the upper left corner, identifies: Horizontal Layers, Cliffs with gradients under 45 degrees, Cliffs with gradients over 45 degrees, Triangulation Points, Churches, Mosques, and Highpoints (with elevations in metres). Below, the ‘Häufigere Ortsbezeichnungen’ (Frequent Place Names) translates the Albanian words employed to denote: Mountains, Rivers, Creeks, Passes and Plains. The present map dramatically surpassed any previously effort to express the complex geology of the region, forms a critical component of the modern geological mapping of the Balkans, in general.         A Room of One's Own

London: The Hogarth Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. About Near Fine. Cloth sharp, very faintly faded at spine, corners slightly pushed in. Offsetting to end sheets, small previous owner book plate to front paste down and small inked name to rear gutter. Light, small staining to rear free end paper, last several pages, several sporadic pages sporadically and edge of page block. A lovely copy of this collection of essays, with the title essay arguing that a woman cannot write fiction without money and a room of her own. A very nice copy, lacking the dust jacket.

Leaves From A Missionary’s Notebook (Vellum Copy)

The true First Printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1929. This is number 1 of one hundred and twenty five copies specially printed on vellum paper each numbered and signed by the author. Interestingly although this copy is numbered '1' , it appears to be unsigned. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends with a little fraying at the lower spine tip. Light soiling to the boards. Gilt titling remains bright. Light spotting and a few minor marks to the end-papers. Mild toning to the text-block and page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Fascimile handwriting and illustrations throughout, by the author. Seen as a risqué publication when it first appeared, this "comical fantasia" [Tennant's own words] is a rather camp tale of the Rev Littlejohn and two lady companions who embark on a missionary expedition to the deepest jungle. Tennant was a British socialite known for his decadent lifestyle. He was called 'the brightest' of the 'Bright Young People'. A very nice copy of a scarce title. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
