A Room of One's Own

London: The Hogarth Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. About Near Fine. Cloth sharp, very faintly faded at spine, corners slightly pushed in. Offsetting to end sheets, small previous owner book plate to front paste down and small inked name to rear gutter. Light, small staining to rear free end paper, last several pages, several sporadic pages sporadically and edge of page block. A lovely copy of this collection of essays, with the title essay arguing that a woman cannot write fiction without money and a room of her own. A very nice copy, lacking the dust jacket.

Leaves From A Missionary’s Notebook (Vellum Copy)

The true First Printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1929. This is number 1 of one hundred and twenty five copies specially printed on vellum paper each numbered and signed by the author. Interestingly although this copy is numbered '1' , it appears to be unsigned. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends with a little fraying at the lower spine tip. Light soiling to the boards. Gilt titling remains bright. Light spotting and a few minor marks to the end-papers. Mild toning to the text-block and page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Fascimile handwriting and illustrations throughout, by the author. Seen as a risqué publication when it first appeared, this "comical fantasia" [Tennant's own words] is a rather camp tale of the Rev Littlejohn and two lady companions who embark on a missionary expedition to the deepest jungle. Tennant was a British socialite known for his decadent lifestyle. He was called 'the brightest' of the 'Bright Young People'. A very nice copy of a scarce title. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Mohyla Dr. Mr.R. Stefanika na Bradle.

Prague: State nakladatelstvo 1929 - Folio, cloth, 72pp. Jurkovic was the preeminent Slovak architect from the Secessionist period through the immediate post (2d) war building design. This is a monument to Dr. Milan Stefanik (1889-1929), astronomer and military leader who was a founder of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia with Tomas Masaryk. Stefanik died in a tragic airplane crash in the mountains of Slovakia at an early age, and Jurkovic was inspired to construct this remarkable edifice in the highlands at the crash site quite soon after Stefanik's death to commemorate his contribution to the new country. Dušan Jurkovic (1868-1947) was a great Slovak architect working from the turn of the century through all the modernist movements that occurred in Czechoslovakia. He evolved a very individual, rustic Slovak style for which he was highly acclaimed, somewhat parallel to the Zakopane style of Stanislaw Witkiewicz the elder in Poland. Later he moved into Czech Functionalism with an equal success. Many photos and plans, color plate. Text in Slovak. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Collection of Lotos Club Menus

New York, 1929. Fourteen souvenir menus, varying sizes approximately 40 x 30 cm. A collection of menus from the Lotos Club State Dinners. Printed recto only and primarily in sepia and black wash tones with hand colored detail. The Lotos Club, one of the oldest literary clubs in the country, was founded in 1870 by a group of young writers, journalists, and critics. Named for the Tennyson poem "The Lotos Eaters", Mark Twain was an early member of the social club. In 1872 the club started the tradition of hosting elaborate dinners for distinguished figures, called State Dinners. This collection features State Dinner menus to honor, among others, Charles M. Schwab, Andrew W. Mellon, playwright and author Booth Tarkington, operatic tenor Enrico Caruso, philosopher, diplomat, and educator Nicholas Murray Butler, German aristocrat Herr Friedrich Wilhelm von Prittwitz und Gaffron, and President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State William Thomas Cosgrave. Each event has a specifically designed menu, integrating information and iconography related to the honorand. The menus in this collection are designed by artists J. Campbell Phillips, C.J. Hayes, and Charles Sindelar. Food items are simple and reflect contemporary style. Regional assignations are used throughout, for example Long Island Brook Trout and Huitres Buzzards Bays. There are some thematic food items as well, for example emphasizing a national cuisine of the evening's distinguished figure. This collections demonstrates, in just fourteen menus, the breadth and range of State Dinners offered at the Lotos Club and beyond that illustrates not only what they were eating, but what they were doing and with whom they were doing it. Condition varies, some very good though most suffer discoloration and foxing with some edgewear and just good. Most signed by the evening's honorand. 1. William Wallace Walker. February 16, 1910. 27 x 51 cm. Illustrated with tracing paper overlay which is also illustrated and printed. Signed by seventeen attendees. Includes club's motto: "In the afternoon they came unto a land In which it seemed always afternoon". 2. Nicholas Murray Butler. April 17, 1915. 38 x 27.5 cm. Black tones. 3. Enrico Caruso. "The Maltese Falcon": The third of five parts in Black Mask, November 1929

New York: Pro-Distributors Publishing Company, 1929. First appearance of the Dashiell Hammett novel, (part 3 of 5 parts), "The Maltese Falcon," in the November 1929 issue of the Black Mask pulp magazine. The five parts were collected and published as a novel by Alfred A. Knopf in 1930. The turning point in Hammett's career. The author stuck exclusively with Continental Op stories (and longer Op stories in parts, including "Red Harvest" and "The Dain Curse"). But the success of "The Maltese Falcon" in Black Mask and especially as a novel, led to a new level of popularity for both Hammett and the pulp magazine that defined him. Also featured in this issue is a short story by noted hardboiled writer Frederick Nebel, "Hell-Smoke." Good only in wrappers. Spine panel is missing entirely, some chips at the wrapper extremities, and a few repairs (though no restoration). An acceptable copy overall.

Autograph draft of poem written for Willi and Margarete Lebach

Dusseldorf, 1929. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph draft of an untitled poem in German, written to Willibald and Margarete Lebach. 1 sheet, on verso of a typed letter signed to Einstein from German humorist Emil Schröder (1896-1977) dated 18 April 1929. Düsseldorf, [after 18 April] 1929 (dated in pencil by Einstein’s secretary, Helen Dukas, in the top margin). Creased where previously folded, margins a bit frayed and chipped, but very good. Einstein had a gift for impromptu light verse, as is shown in this poem written to thank his friends Willi and Margarete (Grete) Lebach for their hospitality when he attended a conference of the German Physical Society in Düsseldorf in 1929. The poem dates from around the time that Einstein and Margarete Lebach became lovers, a relationship that appears to have lasted until Einstein left Germany permanently in 1933. In the early 1930s Margarete visited Einstein weekly, bringing home-baked pastries to placate Einstein’s jealous wife, Elsa, who would always leave the house to go shopping in Berlin on the days that Margarete was with her husband. The poem can be translated as follows: When you are in trouble When you are a burden to yourself When your heart feels empty and desolate When life weighs heavily on you There is still help for you: Move quickly to the Lebach’s house There good spirits rise again There you’ll like life again. Here rules with clever precision Wilhelm’s latest soldier Who for Germany’s good fortune Conducts his elevated politics But the housewife sweet and gentle Like an early Madonna painting Radiating joy and peace Happy to whom this house belongs. Next to the poem, in what may be Margarete Lebach’s hand, is a penciled inscription in German, which can be translated as: “You can have so much beauty in you / That the others around you are beggars.” Einstein wrote his poem on the back of a letter sent to him by Emil Schröder, a minor German writer and humorist, who had enclosed his own dialect poem (not present) to Einstein. Einstein appears not to have thought much of Schröder’s poem, writing “Versuche nie /Frau Poesie” (Leave Lady Poetry alone) on the letter’s verso. Hoffman, Einstein’s Berlin: In the Footsteps of a Genius, p. 153.

Paris: L'Édition d'Art, 1929. Limited edition. Softcover. g to vg. 1/2000. Large quarto (11 3/4 x 9 1/4"). 117, [3]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over blind wrappers. His art is characterized by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre quality and his ephemeral illustrations are intricately inventive, flirting with implausibility. One of 2,000 numbered copies, of which this is No. 794.Some foxing to slipcase. Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine. Text in French. Slipcase in overall good, dust-jacket and blind wrappers in good+, interior in very good condition.
