Flapper Sewing Sample Books, Set of Three

Portland, OR 1929 - 3 sewing sample books created by a school girl in 1929. 33, 44, and 34 leaves. Original paper wrappers, 1 volume bound with metal rings. Fabric samples, original sewing samples, and magazine and pattern clippings tipped-in throughout. Wrappers rubbed, tanned, and spotted with some chips and short splits at the edges, leaves toned, fabric and sewing samples in fresh condition. A very good set. Three evocative Jazz Age sewing sample books created by 15-year-old June Schroetlin for a school course in Portland, Oregon during 1929. Each volume is carefully ordered with an index, reading lists, notes (some are in manuscript and others are printed class handouts), fabric samples with information on their uses, and laboratory records including the lengths and costs of material used in projects. Each volume contains sewing exercises which Schroetlin completed and tipped-in, including examples of attaching snaps and clasps, a variety of stitches, buttonholes, smocking, pockets, and pin tucks. One assignment sees Schroetlin clipping contemporary fashion plates and assigning them to design categories such as "repetition", "opposition", "formal balance", and "gradation". Also of interest are Schroetlin's suggestions (based on fashion plates) for outfits for various "types", such as "a sport outfit suitable for a high school school girl who is a brunette [and] is short and thin in build"; "an afternoon dress for a tea for a large elder woman whose hair has begun to turn gray"; and "a dress for myself for an informal high school dance". The workbooks were graded by hand, with the teacher making notes in red pencil regarding Schroetlin's sewing work and her aesthetic choices. These books are a wonderful historical survival, recording the fashion interests and practical education of an American teenager during the late 1920s. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1929 - 1929 to 1937 Wisden Hardbacks Set of 9.

1929. This lot is a Set of 9 Hardback Wisdens - 1929 to 1937. In OK Condition, including the hard to find 1934 (Bodyline Wisden). This set would be rated as 6/10 , it is not the best in terms of condition but the books are all steady , as we know 1933 to 1937 tend to be rougher than the other HBs after the change of materials by Wisden. The 1929 has worn boards, the 1932 has some marks to the spine, 1933/5/6 has facsimile spine gilt. 1929 has repaired hinges but all the rest are strong and original. 1934 is in top form, all photoplates present and correct. A steady set for someone looking to pick up most of the 1930s Hardbacks. More details on request.

The Poet and The Lunatics. Episodes in The Life of Gabriel Gale.

London, Cassell. 1929. First Edition. 8vo. Near fine copy in publisher's black ribbed cloth, titled in bright gilt to the spine. Slightly bumped at the head of the spine. Dustwrapper worn at head and tail of spine with trifling loss, a little chipped to the extremties, bright and unfaded, there is a little darkening to the spine chiefly noticeable from the result of the removal of a label at the base of the spine that has resulted in a noticeably cleaner spot. Light spotting to page edges, internally clean.Gabriel Gale is an eccentric poet. His madness is the madness of insight and he uses this gift to solve or prevent crimes committed by madmen. Chesterton ably illustrates his own premise that lunacy and sanity may just be a point of view. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [281]. Book Collector No.273, p34.

Die neue Volksschule in Celle: ein Beitrag zum Problem des neuzeitlichen Schulhauses

Englert & Schlosser, Frankfurt a.M. 1929 - Quarto (10 1/4 x 9 1/2"). 40pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers. Illustrated with 35 b/w photographic reproductions and 10 drawings and plans, this work is a splendid monograph on the architecture of the "Altstädter secondary school" in Celle, Germany. The school was built in 1927/28 by the Bauhaus architect Otto Haesler, and is considered today as one of the ten most important buildings in the Bauhaus style. Otto Haesler (1880-1962) was an influential German architect who is often grouped with Bruno Taut, Ernst May and Walter Gropius as being among the most significant representatives of the Modernist ("Neues Bauen") architecture that became important initially during the Weimar period. Haesler championed the building of social housing, providing improved living conditions for an increased number of tenants at an affordable rent. He wanted to reduce costs and at the same time improve living spaces by using standardized floor plans and employing the newly available steel frame construction methods. He therefore oriented and designed his developments to maximize the use of sunlight, replacing corridors with living rooms able to benefit directly from the afternoon sun, and bedrooms directly accessible from the day-time living spaces.Wrapper slightly age-toned and rubbed along edges. Previous owner's name in ink, dated 1929 at upper margin of title page. Text in German. Wrappers in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Emergency Decree concerning 1929 Riots in Palestine

1929. (JUDAICA—PALESTINE) CHANCELLOR, Sir John Herbert (High Commissioner for Palestine). Minshar [“Manifesto”—Emergency Decree of the British High Commissioner Concerning the 1929 Riots]. Jerusalem: Press of the Greek Monastery, September 4, 1929. Broadside (measures 17 by 20 inches), printed on recto. Framed. $5500.Emergency decree in Hebrew issued by the British High Commissioner for Palestine announcing special power to be given to the Courts in conducting trials for those arrested for violent conduct in the 1929 riots in Palestine. On August 23, 1929, following a ten-month build-up of tension over the disputed rights of Jews to pray at the Western Wall, an Arab mob attempted to attack Jews in Jerusalem. The outbreak of violence spread to other parts of the country and on the following day, Arabs murdered some 70 Jews in Hebron. In the week of bloody violence that ensued, there were attacks in Tel Aviv, Haifa and 18 Jews were killed by an Arab mob in Safed. Before the week had passed, large detachments of British troops were brought in, arresting numerous Jews and Arabs, and finally restoring order to the country. In the disturbances 133 Jews were killed and 339 wounded, mainly in Jerusalem and Hebron; Arab casualties, chiefly from police action, were 116 killed and 232 wounded. In this Emergency Decree, the British High Commissioner for Palestine, Sir John Herbert Chancellor, announced that special powers were to be given to the Courts in conducting the trials of those arrested, the aim being to ensure a fair trial and to determine whether the attacks were spontaneous or premeditated. He also announced the formation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry to be headed by Sir Walter Shaw to inquire into the immediate causes of the riots. Finally, he concludes, the incidents will not result in a change of British policy with regard to Palestine as laid down in the 1917 Balfour Declaration, namely to favor the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. Despite Sir John’s final assurance in this Emergency Decree, the Shaw Commission decided the cause of the riots had been Arab feelings of animosity consequent upon the disappointment in their national aspirations and fear for their future. Thus the Commission proposed restriction of Jewish migration to Palestine and restrictions on the purchase of land by Jews. As a result, in October 1929, the Colonial Secretary Lord Passfield issued a “White Paper” which further whittled down the meaning of the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate and foreshadowed fresh restrictions on Jewish immigration and settlement in Palestine (Encyclopaedia Judaica). With seal of the British High Commissioner of Palestine. Text in Hebrew. Fine condition. Scarce.

World War Foreign Debts Commission Act Signed Photograph.

1929. Signed photograph of the members of The World War Foreign Debt Commission and the Belgian Commission. Signed below by each member, including Herbert Hoover (Secretary of Commerce and future President of the United States), Andrew W. Mellon (Secretary of the Treasury), Frank B. Kellogg (Secretary of State and 1929 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize), Reed Smoot (United States Senator and co-sponsor of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act), Theodore E. Burton (United States Senator from Ohio), Charles R. Crisp, Richard Olney, Edward N. Hurley, Garrard B. Winston, Arthur N. Young and F.G. Blair of the Debt Commission. Also signed by Emile de Cartier, Emile Francqui, Felicien Cattier, Georges Theunis, Robert Silvercruys and Andrew Terlinden of the Belgian Commission. In near fine condition. Matted and framed, which measures 14 inches by 15 inches. Rare. The United States federal World War Foreign Debts Commission Act of February 9, 1922 authorized the creation of a commission, working under Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon, to negotiate repayment agreements with Great Britain and France in the aftermath of World War I. The Commission placed the Allied debt principal to the United States at $11 billion; payments were to be made in graduated 62 annual installments; however, the accrued interest on these payments over a period of 62 years would have increased the debt to approximately $22 billion, although the U.S. did agree to lowered interest rates. Great Britain's debt was reduced 19.7% to $4.6 billion with the interest rate reduced from 5% to 3% for the first ten years of payment to be raised to 3 1/2 % thereafter. France's debt was reduced by 52.8% to $4 billion, without any interest for the first five years of payment. It was then to be increased gradually to 3 1/2 %. The Harding administration made it clearly understood that the United States had no interest in cancellation. This position was widely supported by the public, which felt that those who incur debts should repay them. This tight-fistedness was not well received in Europe, where the image of Uncle Sam slowly gave way to "Uncle Shylock."
