Beweis des Ergodensatzes und des H-Theorems in der neuen Mechanik,' in Zeitschrift für Physik, 57. Band, 1. & 2. Heft, 22 August 1929. NIELS BOHR's copy with his signature on front wrapper

Berlin: Springer 1929 - Complete journal issue in original printed wrappers, 8vo, pp. 144. Front wrapper soiled with a couple of marginal tears, spine rubbed with small loss at foot, ink spot on first two pages of Von Neumann's article (possibly due to Bohr! - the ink seems to be the same as that used for his signature). First edition, NIELS BOHR'S COPY, of this fundamental and difficult work on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. The ergodic theorem is a fundamental principle of classical statistical mechanics according to which the time average of a physical quantity is equal to the average of the same quantity taken over 'phase space'. Phase space is a description of all the possible configurations of the physical system - fixing a point in phase space corresponds to fixing all the positions and momenta of the constituent parts of the system. The main difficulty in obtaining a quantum mechanical version of this principle is that, because of the uncertainty principle, the positions and momenta cannot be fixed simultaneously, so 'fixing a point in phase space' no longer makes sense. Von Neumann summarises how he overcame this problem in the abstract of the present paper: "It is shown how to resolve the apparent contradiction between the macroscopic approach of phase space and the validity of the uncertainty relations. The main notions of statistical mechanics are re-interpreted in a quantum-mechanical way, the ergodic theorem and the H-theorem are formulated and proven (without “as- sumptions of disorder”), followed by a discussion of the physical meaning of the mathematical conditions characterizing their domain of validity [of the two theorems]." (Translation from Mehra & Rechenberg, Vol. 6, p. 451). The problem had been considered earlier by Schrodinger, and he wrote admiringly of Von Neumann's paper. "Erwin Schrodinger addressed von Neumann's proof of the H-theorem directly in a letter to the author, dated 25 December 1929, which he opened by stating: 'Your statistical paper did interest me quite a lot. I am quite happy about it, especially about the wonderful clarity and accuracy of the conceptions and the careful presentation of what has been achieved in all points' (Schrodinger to von Neumann, 25 December 1929). Schrodinger recognized as the central issue of von Neumann's considerations the introduction of the concepts 'operator of a macroscopically measurable quantity' and the 'orthogonal system of the macroscopic observation'. 'This is an extraordinarily happy move, and I believe that it will obtain a significance far beyond the present problems' (ibid., p. 460). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Das Geheimnis der Jesuitenmacht und ihr Ende

Ludendorffs, Munich, Munchen, Germany 1929 - This volume was part of the Rehse collection, which Hitler bought from Rehse, fell into the hands of the Allies at the end of World War II At least a portion of it was shipped to the United States, ended up in the Library of Congress, which de-accessioned this copy. See stamps. Friedrich Josef Maria Rehse (* 23. March 1870 in Münster ; ¿ 14. January 1952 in Munich ) was a German photographer and art publishers. It was mainly known as the original investor of the so-called Rehse Collection, a central source of the history of the NSDAP. At the beginning of the First World War, Rehse began - as he thought " inspired by the shots of Sarajevo" - to create a collection of contemporary history documents, which he initially referred to as "an archive of contemporary history and journalism Munich". Later, this was generally known as a Collection of Rehse . The collection included posters, flags, newspaper excerpts, brochures, and objects of a different kind. In the first years of its existence, mainly material about the history of the history, especially the history of political parties, was collected. At the beginning of the 1920s, Rehse began to collect materials on the history of the NSDAPs, which were then increasingly noticeable in Munich, whose history soon became a core component of the collection. Since 1921, Rehse was in personal contact with Adolf Hitler, on whose behalf the collection was purchased in 1929 by the NSDAP for 80,000 RM . The collection, which Rehse now supervised as an employee of the NSDAP, changed from then on (1929: Archive and Museum of Contemporary History, 1932: FJ Rehse Collection for Contemporary History and Journalism, 1938: FJ Rehse Archive and Museum of Contemporary History) to the Reichsschatzmeister of the NSDAP. In 1938, the collection has been housed in the Munich Residenz. The collection, which has been described as a "mixture of the periodical archive and curiosity cabinet", was extended to the years of the war and partly made accessible to the public in the context of museum exhibitions. The Rehse Collection fell into the hands of the Americans at the end of World War II , which seized them and brought them to the United States. A large portion of the collection was later handed over to the Federal Archives, but some remained in the Library of Congress in the United States. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Budapest: Magyar çllami Fšldtani IntŽzet [Geological Institute of Hungary] [] 1929 - Chromolithograph with monochrome lithographed overlay on transparent paper (Excellent, clean old vertical and horizontal folds), 66 x 60 cm (26 x 23.5 inches). The original publisherÕs proof of Franz Baron von NopcsaÕs geological map of Northern Albania, the first scientific geological map of the region. This intriguing production is the original publisherÕs proof from the Magyar çllami Fšldtani IntŽzet (Geological Institute of Hungary) of Franz Baron NopcsaÕs geological map of Northern Albania, being the first scientific geological map of that region. Nopcsa was a Hungarian nobleman, and a world-renowned paleontologist and geologist, who from 1905 to 1916, resided in Albania, where he became a leading authority on that nationÕs history, culture and natural sciences, as well as a prominent member of its independence movement. He remains one of the biggest names in modern Albanian history. During his time in Albania, Nopcsa conducted the first scientific geological reconnaissance of the country, with a particular focus on the northern regions. The present publisherÕs proof consists of two distinct physical parts: first, the lower chromolithographed map is based directly on Baron NopcsaÕs original manuscript geological sketch map of the region; second, the transparent overlay, featuring a highly precise monochrome skeletal road map of the region, was intended to both contextualize NopcsaÕs geological mapping and to correct his relatively geodetic errors. For the resulting printed map, issued to accompany NopcsaÕs academic article, ÔGeographie und Geologie NordalbaniensÕ, within the journal Geologica Hungarica, Series Geologica, vol. 3 (Budapest: Magyar çllami Fšldtani IntŽzet, 1929), these two components were combined, such that the information upon the overlay was integrated into the main map, which naturally necessitated some amendments to the positioning of certain features. Northern Albania was a region of exceptionally rugged topography, and traditionally an area of great political instability, meaning that it was one of the last regions of Europe to be geologically surveyed. NopcsaÕs principally German-language map embraces all of Albania north of the Ishem River (labeled here as the ÔMataÕ), a land dominated by the North Albanian Alps, and including the area around the major city of ÔScutariÕ (Shkoder), extending its overage a little ways into coastal Montenegro, as far as Bar. The various geological zones are colour-coded, identified on the two legends on the right side of the map, the ÔFarbenerklŠrung [Explanation of Colours] (Sediment)Õ notes 13 sedimentary zones; while the ÔFarbenerklŠrung (Eruptiva)Õ notes 6 zones created by volcanic activity, plus noting the red lines that demarcates tectonic faults. The ÔZeichenklŠrungÕ (Explanation of Symbols), in the upper left corner, identifies: Horizontal Layers, Cliffs with gradients under 45 degrees, Cliffs with gradients over 45 degrees, Triangulation Points, Churches, Mosques, and Highpoints (with elevations in metres). Below, the ÔHŠufigere OrtsbezeichnungenÕ (Frequent Place Names) translates the Albanian words employed to denote: Mountains, Rivers, Creeks, Passes and Plains. The present map dramatically surpassed any previously effort to express the complex geology of the region, forms a critical component of the modern geological mapping of the Balkans, in general. Franz Baron Nopcsa: A Giant of Geology, Paleontology and Albanian History - Franz Baron Nopcsa von Fels?-Szilv‡s (1877 - 1933) was a world-renowned geologist, paleontologist, SEE OUR WEB-PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION.

"This was one of the most important happenings of Allan Kaprow’s career, and not because of its impact or visibility in its time, but because of the implications that are grounded conceptually in its development. Le Morte D'Arthur

Boston & London: The Medici Society, 1929. Le Morte D'Arthur Illustrated by William Russell Flint In a Superb Full Red Morocco Binding with Floral Inlays FLINT, William Russell, illustrator. MALORY, Sir Thomas. Le Morte D'Arthur. The History of King Arthur and of his Noble Knights of the Round Table by Sir Thomas Malory, Knt. Boston & London: The Medici Society, [1929]. Thin Paper One-Volume Edition. Octavo (8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 212 x 140 mm.). xliv, 531 (1 blank) pp. Twenty-four full page color plates. Handsomely bound ca. 1930 in full red morocco, covers decoratively bordered with flower corner pieces surrounding a central floral design with a central flower inlaid in blue and green morocco. Spine with five raised bands elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. A very fine example. Although the binding is not signed it was most certainly executed by one of the great American binderies of the time. Imprinted after the text of William Caxton as modernized, under the editorship of Alfred W. Pollard for the Medici Society in London. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement and by the stylized neoclassical art of the Renaissance, W[illiam]. Russell Flint (1880-1969) was educated at the Royal Institute of Art, Edinburgh. He began his career on the staff of Illustrated London News 1903-1907 but "from this period onwards…turned increasingly to watercolour, particularly for the illustration of colour books. He was strongly influenced by the illustrations of Rip Van Winkle by Arthur Rackham and between 1905 and 1924 produced a whole series of brilliant luxury editions for the Riccardi Press of the Medici Society. His figures are finely modeled and contain elements of a Burne-Jones influence by way of Byam Shaw" (Houfe). His illustrations for the Medici Society/Riccardi Press editions of The Greek Heroes, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and the volume under notice are considered to be his best and most beautiful work.
