With the scarce dustjacket. 12mo, University of Washington Chapbooks Number Thirty, 30 pp. Signed and inscribed by Benjamin DeCasseres in New York on January 12th, 1930 to Irma Duncan, the disciple, foster-daughter and close business associate of Isadora Duncan, about whom this essay was in part written. "To Irma Duncan, whose great art has given me infinite pleasure". In original wraps with original peach jacket, showing $ .65 price. Inside covers are beige. Many pages unopened at top, including copyright page, which precludes scanning of that page; however, copyright page does state, as is correct, "Copyright, 1929, by Glenn Hughes" at the top and "Printed in the United States of America" at bottom. Near Fine / Near Fine; a demure crease to cover of jacket, affecting a few inside pages; traces of light soil on rear jacket cover. See scan. A thirty page essay by DeCasseres on the Nietzschean concept of the Superman as adopted in American culture by that time, in his opinion. Isadora Duncan is referenced as the female version of that icon: "She danced over life, she underwent all agonies...she was mother, sweetheart, sister, daughter, Madonna-Isolde-Dionysia all in one...one of the greatest, most fearless women in all history." A singular and irreplaceable little chapbook. Top Provenance. Lsmph2

THE PASSION PLAY 1 sh c.1929. - JESUS MARY JOSEPH - VERY RARE - AMAZING GRA VG-

1929 - WE ARE DELIGHTED TO OFFER THIS ORIGINAL MOVIE POSTER, WHICH WAS INTENDED FOR DISTRIBUTION EXCLUSIVELY TO THEATERS - MAKING IT EXTREMELY RARE TODAY. This is not a poster that could be purchased at regular retail outlets. The spectacular image is superb, making this a great item to display or collect. Take a moment to enjoy the fact that the central image of the poster is a series of pictures arranged in the shape of a cross - it is brilliant graphic and religious symbolism. HISTORIC THEMES AND CREATORS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSTER, including JESUS, MARY, JOSEPH, THE LAST SUPPER, THE CRUCIFIXION and much more. This poster is undated. We estimate a 1929 date due to the notice about "Synchronized with Singing Music Sound." Since the first such sound film came out about 1928, and sound was standard by 1931, we feel this historic movie was almost certainly made in the 1928-1934 era and estimate a 1929 date. Imagine owning a piece of cinematic and religious history - that is what this is. CONDITION is very attractive. This large poster, known in the trade as a "one sheet," measures about 27" x 41". It was folded by the movie distributor when it was new (for ease of distribution). There are a few splits along the seams, a very small piece or two are gone (barely noticeable), and a few inches of old tape has fallen off the back and left minor stains. We want to detail the condition (please see pic of top half of poster to view seam split through the second "S" in "PASSION," and to see the tiny piece out under "Picture" on right middle). We should also add that this poster still looks very nice. It could be appropriately matted and framed (just as it is) and look great. We grade it VERY GOOD-. It is the only example we can remember every having seen, and would look superb on display. In fact, we cannot find any other example of this poster noted in the top movie collector websites. This could be the only example in existence (although we have no way of knowing that for sure). We estimate that it is about 80 years old. PHOTOS: We are providing large photos so everyone can get an idea of just how nice this poster is. Please note that our consignor's photos are a bit fuzzy and dark. The actual item is sharply printed with square corners. This poster would make a spectacular addition to almost any collection of religious and historic movie posters. Condition: VG-

1929 - [MATERIA MEDICA] Li Shizhen; translated by Makino Tomitaro, et al. Tochu KOKUYAKU HONSO KOMOKU. Shunyodo, Tokyo, Showa 4 [1929] 15 volumes, bound Western-style in decorated cloth over boards, slipcases. The late 16th century Chinese materia medica, Honzo Komoku, was imported into Japan by the early 17th century. The first japanese edition appeared in 1637, the definitve enlarged Japanese edition in 1714, with native japanese plants added. The Edo era versions were printed in classical Chinese with diacritical marks (kanbun) to aid the Japanese reader. This set at hand was translated into modern pre-war Japanese and, as such, became the first version of the text useful to the general Japanese reading public. One of the most important guides to the medicinal uses of plants in East Asia. It should be noted that the binding decorations are quite lovely Deco- inspired floral designs, here still in excellent, clean condition. Complete.

Production manager's notebook for Vanity Fair underwear and stockings

[Reading, Pennsylvania] 1929 - This 5" x 7.5" notebook contains 120 pages chock full of manuscript production tables, sizing information, test results, assorted notes, clothing labels, elastic samples, receipts, correspondence, certifications and more. A six-page pamphlet extract with information about an automatic sewing machine is laid in. All of the contents are in very nice shape. The notebook corner shows some wear and is missing its spine covering. Vanity Fair, which has grown into a $13 billion clothing conglomerate (Wrangler, Lee, Jansport, Northface, Vans, Timberland, Nautica, etc.) began in 1899 as a Pennsylvania glove and mitten company. As those sales began to wane in the 1910s it added underwear to its line. Silk underwear was added in 1913; rayon, rayon-blends, and hosiery in the 1920s; and elastic, which it used for girdles and bras, in the 1930s. During the World War II years, the company devoted all of its production lining to making parachutes. After the war, it began to only use nylon in its products and led in developing pleating, color, and print processes. In the late1960s, the company changed its name to the VF Corporation and began buying up other companies. Interestingly, in 2007, VF Corporation left the lingerie business and sold Vanity Fair to Fruit of the Loom. Snader was an important member of the company's leadership team and served in a variety of positions including Production Manager, Sales Manager, and Treasurer. No doubt a competitor would have loved to find this notebook left lying around on a restaurant table, lounge bar, or restroom vanity. Obviously a unique record of a classic American company's early years as it built itself into major lingerie supplier. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Printed on rectos only. 83 pp. Dark reddish brown cloth, spine missing. Jerome K. Jerome's (1859-1927) experience as an actor led to his novel On the Stage-and Off (1885) and his play Barbara. (1886) In true Jerome style he dedicated his collection of essays The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886) Despite his straitened circumstances he kept his sardonic humour and wrote his slapstick tale of a riverboat trip up the Thames, Three Men in a Boat, (1889) subtitle to say nothing of the dog. The story was inspired by his honeymoon and based on himself and two real-life friends, George Wingrave, whom he'd met while a clerk, and Carl Hentschel whom he'd met through the theatre. Now well-placed in the heart of literary London, in 1893 Jerome founded the co-weekly Today and in 1892 he founded and co-edited The Idler with his friend and fellow humorist Robert Barr. Jerome had always taken to using humour as panacea though privately he was often melancholy. His play The Passing of the Third Floor Back, (1908) with an uncharacteristic moral tone was only a success after people got used to his new style of delivery. The English army wouldn't accept his service but in 1916 Jerome was an ambulance driver for the French army. On 14 June 1927 Jerome died in Northampton General Hospital after suffering a series of strokes. Quoted form the Literature network website.
